Kraft looks back on12 years as 1st District councilman

“The demands were and are great. Technically, it is considered a part-time job but I don’t think there’s any week that I didn’t work between 50-60 hours,” said Councilman Jim Kraft.

After twelve years of serving as the councilman for the 1st District, Kraft will step down this year.

In 2015, he announced that he will not run for reelection, ending over a decade of public service for the Southeast. As his final term comes to a close, he reflects on his experiences working for and representing the residents.

“In District 1 . . . our choice for the seat vacated by James B. Kraft in the Democratic race is Scott Goldman,a 34-year-old attorney and former U.S. Army captain who became interested in running after he fi rst experienced the ineptitude of the city bureaucracy fi rst hand — a burst water pipe belonging to the city fl ooded his basement in Canton and took months to fi x. He demonstrates a broad understanding of Baltimore’s core issues but also a realistic expectation of City Council — and the need to work with fellow council members as well as agency heads.”

On Sunday, April 24, an event called Cameras Against Cancer will offer professional photo sessions for a good cause.

The event was created as a way for photographer Ross Lewin to combine his passion for photography with his desire to give back to a charity that is close to him.

One of the multiple events all over Maryland and D.C., this Cameras Against Cancer event will take place on the rooftop of the Natty Boh tower at 3600 O’Donnell St.

For $50 a photoshoot, you not only get Lewin’s photography, but you also get your make-up and hair professionally done as well as massages while you wait. Lewin’s roommate is a DJ and will be providing music as you get your Heidi Klum on.

All of the make-up artists, hair stylists, and masseuses are volunteers. Lewin started by first reaching out to his friends but as he networked and met people, he had people flocking to him, eager to help.

He is donating all of the proceeds raised at the Cameras for Cancer events to the non-profit, Zaching Against Cancer.

Zaching Against Cancer was founded by Zachary Lederer, a University of Maryland student who passed away from brain cancer in 2014.

While undergoing surgery and chemotherapy, Zach’s signature pose, a muscle-man flex, became a sign of his resilience and fighting spirit.

John Lederer, Zach’s father, explained that he struck the pose after a particularly difficult brain surgery.

“He said ‘Dad, I wanted to make sure my friends and family knew I was strong enough to beat this and be okay.’”

Once photos of this “Zaching” was posted online, it became viral and inspired people across the country to do the same.

“It became a symbol of strength, courage, determination, and hope,” said Lederer.

During his time in the hospital, Zach was lucky to have a solid support system and the means to get the treatments he needed, said Lederer. However, he noticed that some of his fellow patients weren’t as lucky.

“He saw other people in the hospital who didn’t have that support network, people at the pharmacy who couldn’t afford their prescriptions or co-pays so that inspired him to start the foundation.”

The organization provides direct services to cancer patients such as transportation to hospitals, prescriptions, monetary assistance,

and even music therapy. It also raises money for oncology research

and scholarship funds for students affected by cancer. Zaching Against Cancer partners with fourteen hospitals in Maryland, Massachusetts, and Florida. These hospitals refer patients with specific needs to the non-profit for help in whatever ways they need it.

“I wanted to work with a local group that had good connections to the area so I could reach out to the most amount of people,” said Lewin.

Lewin chose this cause because his mother is a breast cancer survivor.

“It really changed my life,” said Lewin about his mother’s cancer. “Since then, it’s been something on the back of my mind. I want to be able to support myself while helping causes like this.”

He enjoys bringing people together and giving them the chance to showcase their talents while shining a light on the work of non-profits who are fighting for a cure.

In his first event, which Lewin admits was quickly put together, raised over $1,600. He is expecting Cameras For Cancer to grow from here.

Lederer is grateful for the work of Lewin and the other volunteers which help Zaching Against Cancer make the biggest positive impact possible.

“People want to give back, they just need the opportunity to do that.”

BALTIMORE GUIDE 9WEDNESDAY, APRIL 20, 2016

They say that a cat has nine lives, but for Tigger, a 21-year old cat with a “bucket list” and a caring cat-crazy owner, one life will be enough.

The awwww-inspiring story of this tenacious tabby grabbed attention and headlines across the world, demonstrating the love and resilience of rescued animals.

Cantonite and Baltimore Guide contributor Adriene Buisch adopted Tigger last year after seeing a post on the Canton Neighbors Facebook page about an elderly cat abandoned at an animal hospital. The moment Buisch, a former cheerleader for the Baltimore Ravens football team who now works at Charm City Veterinary Hospital, saw Tigger’s frail bone-thin frame and matted fur, she knew he belonged with her.

“He was like a skeleton with this big fluffy head, I was almost afraid to touch him,” she said.

Buisch later learned that Tigger had been at the veterinary clinic for over nine months. His former owner had him boarded there and never came back for him.

He was malnourished and suffering from kidney failure which was only made worse by his time at the clinic. Yet Buisch saw that at 21 years old, he had plenty of life and love left in him to give.

“He did a complete 180,” she said about when Tigger was taken home, adding that she thinks he has slept on every blanket and pillow in the house.

She began to notice he loved going outside and strutting down the sidewalk. He also enjoys traveling around in a sling bag and greeting people in O’Donnell Square. Buisch describes him as being a kitten in an old man’s body.

With this knowledge, Buisch took Tigger on a beach trip to Bethany Beach to indulge his exploring instincts.

“He was apprehensive at first and sort of overwhelmed. But then all of a sudden, he started walking around and just found a place in the sun, buried himself in the sand and he was purring and rolling around,” she said.

Crowds gathered and were fascinated by this cat and his fearlessness and even more enraptured when Buisch told them his story.

“I’ve never seen such a happy kitty.”The pictures of Tigger posing by the waterfront like a

seasoned model went viral, attracting the attention of news outlets from all over the country.

Tigger’s fanbase grew as Buisch posted pictures documenting his adventures, like his adoption anniversary party, complete with a birthday hat and celebratory chicken breast dinner.

There was a time the page was getting over 1000 Likes a day. Fans from Taiwan and Germany would mail Buisch newspapers clippings of Tigger.

After the discovery that Tigger had a golf ball-sized tumor on his abdomen, Buisch decided to make the last days of his life the happiest ones. With that, Tigger’s bucket list was created.

“We want to give him as much fun and time outside as we can. He always shows us something new that he’s interested in.”

Tigger has big plans this spring. As the weather warms up, Buisch hopes to take him for a stroll down the Canton waterfront and even for a leisurely cruise on a fishing boat. She’s also hoping to use her connection to the Ravens to get Tigger a football meet-and-greet.

Busich addresses criticism from people claiming that she forces Tigger outside, saying that Tigger makes his own decisions.

“We let him choose where he walks to and we just follow. He always directs us,” she said.

“It’s not the typical thing you can do with a cat and he is unique because of that and how well he handles people. Any cat owner will tell you that you can’t force your cat to do anything it doesn’t want to.”

Tigger’s fans have written to her and told her about how the story has inspired them and let them see the merits of rescuing an older animal.

Buisch said that those interested in an older pet should know that it comes with a lot of responsibility and financial burden.

“You never know what health issues are going to show up, it’s not cheap.”

However, her experience as a veterinary technician gave her the knowledge to ensure that Tigger was living as comfortably and contentedly as possible.

And in his year with her, Tigger has given back that affection ten fold.

“We’re lucky we took him in because he changed our life with how special and unique he is. Tigger changed everything. His personality reveals how awesome an older cat can be. He has so much to give back. He’s an example of what you can still have in your life and you can still have that joy. He was the best decision we’ve ever made and it’s hard to put it all into words,” said Buisch. “Age doesn’t matter, it doesn’t change how cool you be.”

You can follow Tigger’s adventures and bucket list on Facebook at “Tigger’s Story- The 21 yr. Old Cat & His Bucket List”.

We let him choose where he walks to andwe just follow.

8 Ball’s spaghettiand meatball dishwith spicy sauce. | Photos by Rachel Lipton

Fell’s Point has recently been graced with a few new awesome restaurants. One of the new spots that received a lot of hype from locals and visitors alike is 8 Ball Meatball, which opened this winter. It specializes in, of course, meatballs, which you can order your personalized special way. You first choose your protein. There’s the classic but there are also other meats like lamb, chicken, spicy pork. Then you must decide if you want it over a salad, on a sub, as sliders, or over spaghetti. Your decision-making is not finished, however. There’s a variety of sauces to choose from as well, like Parmesan cream, spicy meat, or traditional tomato. After a first visit, I was so impressed by the food, service, and selection that I came back shortly afterward.

I decided to get sliders so I can mix and match and get a few different options.

First, I ordered the special ball, which changes weekly. This week, it was a spicy lamb ball topped with tzatziki sauce. This was awesome, I loved how spicy the lamb was without it being overpowering and the cooling effect of the thick creamy tzatziki sauce that relieved my palette. I would love to see this regularly on the menu.

My next meatball was the chicken ball with the pesto sauce. This was also another winner. The chicken was moist and juicy and not at all dry like I was anticipating. The pesto itself was thick and the fresh taste of the basil stood out. I do wish there was slightly more pesto, but that’s just me, I’m a saucy girl so I like a lot of sauce.

The third meatball I ordered was the classic ball with mushroom gravy. The meatball was a mix of beef, pork, and veal which gave it a ton of flavor and was moist, something that really impressed me because so often meatballs can turn into crumbly messes of dry ground beef once you stick the fork in it. The mushroom gravy was hearty and paired well with the savory combination of the meat.

All three sliders were housed in fluffy buns that were slightly crisped. The buns held up against the deluge of sauces and never became soggy, a feat that many meatball subs can’t duplicate.

Sure, 8 Ball’s specialties are meatballs. But the highlight of the meal for me by far was the

cheesy polenta which I ordered as a side dish. The polenta was very creamy and smooth, as any self-respecting polenta should be. The cheese incorporated into the dish along with the snow sprinkle of parmesan on top turned the already good polenta dish into a showstopping sidedish. It really reminded me of a fancier mac and cheese that was levels above Kraft dinner in a box.

They have other sides that I’m eager to go back and try, like risotto, bruschetta, and fried pickles.

My friend opted to order something much more traditional and went with the classic meatballs over spaghetti with the spicy sauce. She loved the dish, saying that the sauce was spiced well and didn’t underestimate her ability to take the heat. The spaghetti was cooked al dente, with a perfect bite.

If you’re craving meatballs and want to get creative, head over to Fells Point and try out all the options at 8 Ball for yourself!

8 Ball Meatball is located at 814 S Broadway.

KRAFT: 12 years in review– C O N T I N U E D F R O M PA G E 1 –

meetings and compromises, the issue was resolved. Kraft laughs as he recalls the anger of residents when he announced reverse angle parking spaces in Canton and how quickly those opponents of the plan became supporters.

“It’s just making a decision and doing it and standing up to that initial pushback. And there’s always going to be people that are unhappy, there are 50,000 people in the 1st district.”

JUDGESHIP:Kraft is currently running for a Baltimore

City Circuit Court judge. He said he was motivated to run after years of seeing the judges be demeaning and disrespectful to the people they should have been serving.

“It’s like they put that robe on and it changes them into a different person. So, I thought I could be different. I think I’ve built up a good reputation and people know I’m prepared. For the last 12 years, I’ve been at community meetings or out in the neighborhood talking to people. I know how all of this stuff works in real life. I think I bring a different perspective to the bench. I thought I could do something different down there, so what the hell.”

Last week, the sitting judges sent a letter of warning to Kraft, urging him to cease using the name of the sitting judges in his campaign literature.

“It’s illegal what they’re saying,” said Kraft. He said the six sitting judges are working as

a team to beat their challengers and raise more money. Kraft said they were upset that he was splitting the ticket, calling the letter a failed intimidation tactic.

The letter did not dissuade Kraft, who is continuing his campaign.

He acknowledges that beating the sitting judges is difficult but is he hopeful that the city will vote for a change in the Circuit Court.

12 YEARS IN REVIEW:Kraft said that he is most proud of the

environmental legislation his administration pushed forward.

“During the 12 years I’ve been here, every piece of environmental legislation in the city, I’ve written,” he said.

Kraft referenced the creation of the Office and Commission of Sustainability and a district-wide push for more green spaces, including a dog park in Patterson Park.

“We’ve done tremendous things with the park, I think we’ve been able to bring a lot of dollars to Patterson Park. I’m really proud of

Councilman Jim Kraft at an award ceremony for the winning team of his Southeast Baseball League. | Photo courtesy of Jim Kraft

the Canton waterfront and Dypski Park. It takes work and initiative to make something like that happen.”

He is also proud of the aforementioned Transform Baltimore. The city’s zoning had not been updated since 1971. Kraft believes that the updates to the code will benefit both developers, residents, and business owners. A seven-year long process, the Transform Baltimore bill will be finalized by the end of summer.

As for what Kraft wishes he could’ve accomplished, he said he wished he had gotten better traffic and transportation regulation in the district. He blames the ineffective management and a lack of direction and consistency in planning within the Department of Transportation.

Councilman since 2014, when the internet was a newborn and neighborhood pages didn’t exist, Kraft said that social media has shifted and complicated the political landscape.

He said posts on Facebook and Twitter can spread misinformation to thousands of people in seconds.

“I think of the quote from Mark Twain, ‘A lie gets halfway around the world while the truth is pulling up its pants.’”

Attention spans are shortened, he explained, and people often only read a few words before moving on, making it difficult to correct or explain something that might have been misrepresented.

“You can’t post an expose about macroeconomics on a bumper sticker.”

CITY COUNCIL ELECTION:Kraft announced that he would not seek

reelection at the start of 2015. He said he wanted to give his potential successors a chance to start their campaign early while encouraging them to separate themselves from his work.

“I didn’t want the campaign to be, ‘Kraft’s an asshole, I’m not him so vote for me.’ I wanted the campaign to be, ‘This is what I believe in and this is why I’m the best person for Southeast Baltimore.’ And to a great extent, that’s what it has been.”

While Kraft is not endorsing any candidate, he is urging voters to be realistic with their expectations for who they elect.

“I want them to look at this people and look beyond campaign slogans. We got a lot of smart people running, this district is not going to elect a stupid person. What I hope they would do is say ‘okay, these are their proposals, this is their platform’, and look at which one really has a realistic platform, which one seems to have a good grasp on how city government works,” said Kraft. “When you look at the people running for City Council, most of them don’t have a background in government, so they have these ideas about how government works, but it’s not how government works.”

He jokes about the relatively young ages of the majority of the candidates and says that while many of the repeated campaign promises look good on paper “90% of being a council person is really about answering phones and filling potholes.”

Darren O’ Day. | Photo courtesy of the Baltimore Orioles

Their rotation has been inconsistent at best this year, with four of their five starters boasting ERAs over 5 (two of them, Nathan Eovaldi and Michael Pineda have ERAs over 6) and the one pitcher who has been pitching well, Masahiro Tanaka, has an elbow which might fall apart at any time.

Sure, their bullpen with Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller is one of the best in the game, it doesn’t matter much if you can’t get them in the game with a lead.

The Toronto Blue Jays are the main threat to the Orioles but once again, their rotation isn’t that much better than the O’s. They do have three starters with ERAs under 3 (Aaron Sanchez, J.A. Happ and Marco Estrada) but I see them regressing a bit as the season progresses. Their bullpen isn’t anywhere near what the Yankees or Orioles have, so you might be able to get to them late in games.

Offensively, they are monsters, equal to the Orioles. Josh Donaldson is a complete beast and Jose Bautista continues to amaze.

This week will be a tough one for the O’s as they have a three game set against the Blue Jays at home before heading out on the road to play the Kansas City Royals for three games, so the next six games will certainly be tough and will be an early test to see how these O’s fare against top competition.

So far so good! After two weeks, the Baltimore Orioles are sitting in first place in the AL East with a record of 8-3, thanks to a potent offense and oddly enough some decent starting pitching, at least during the first week. So is this something that is sustainable? I think so, at least as far as their staying in first place.

I mentioned a few weeks ago that the Orioles, in my opinion, would grab a wild card spot. A lot of other writers had the O’s finishing in last, but I guess you need to pick someone to finish last in the AL East.

The thing is though, the AL East is a total crapshoot.

We all know the Orioles’ starting rotation isn’t necessarily the best, but the only other team with a decent rotation is the Tampa Bay Rays, however that might not really matter if you’ve ever watched them hit because, well, they can’t. The Rays have scored the least amount of runs in all of baseball so far this season so even though their rotation is decent, they just won’t score many runs to help out their pitchers.

The Boston Red Sox have David Price, but after him their rotation is equal if not slightly worse than the Orioles. Offensively, they are a step or two lower than the O’s, so not sure why people are on the Sox bandwagon. The Yankees, well, they have great names on their roster if their roster was from 5 years ago.

The O’s AL East prospects after promising start of season
