"Concerning nonviolence: It is criminal to teach a man not to defend himself, when he is the constant victim of brutal attacks. It is legal and lawful to own a shotgun or a rifle. We believe in obeying the law." "It doesn't mean that I advocate violence, but at the same time, I am not against using violence in self- defense. I don't call it violence when it's self-defense, I call it intelligence." "I don't favor violence. If we could bring about recognition and respect of our people by peaceful means, well and good. Everybody would like to reach his objectives peacefully. But I'm also a realist. The only people in this country who are asked to be nonviolent are black people." What is your gut reaction to the images? What do you think commentators online will write and what does that say about the racial problem in America? When is it okay to respond with violence? Do the protestors have a legitimate concern? The mentality was pervasive and abusive, and corrupt to its very core. Police beat black and Latino residents, assaulted their women, and governed by fear and intimidation in the same way they did in the South. William Henry Parker III was the police chief of the Los Angeles Police Department Black gangs developed as a reaction to Whites from South Gate and Huntington Park patrolled their neighborhoods and enforced a White only policy Point of view of the film-Both gangs filled a void left open after numerous assassinations in the 1960s and the COINTELPRO crackdown on groups like the Black Panther Party (a group that originated to respond to police brutality) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qN4pP-1NWoA Case Studies 1967 Newark Riots-Two white Newark policemen, John DeSimone and Vito Pontrelli, arrested a black cabdriver. Michael Collins, a police spokesman, said that investigators who went to the scene of the shooting did not find a weapon on or near Mr. Diallo. Two of the officers, Sean Carroll, 35, and Edward McMellon, 26, emptied their weapons, firing 16 shots each, the police said. Officer Kenneth Boss, 27, fired his gun five times and Officer Richard Murphy, 26, fired four times. A pager and a wallet were found lying next to the body, a police official said, adding that it was unclear whether the officers could have mistaken the pager for a weapon. Outcome: Four New York City police officers were acquitted today of all charges in the death of Amadou Diallo, the immigrant from Guinea who was fired on 41 times as he stood, unarmed, in the vestibule of his apartment building in the Bronx. The jurors -- four blacks, including the forewoman, and eight whites -- deliberated for three days before reaching their verdict. Their lawyers laid much of the blame for the shooting on Mr. Diallo himself, saying he had behaved suspiciously and had not obeyed the officers' commands to stop.
