CHAIRMAN’S REPORTThe celebration of our centenary year in 008 was everything that we expected it to be, and everything that a club as great as ours deserved it to be.

On January, 008, the Leagues Club hosted our 100th birthday party which had its strength in its inclusiveness. People at every different level of the club participated actively in the celebrations.

The highlights of the centenary year were many. The match in April, 008 at Birchgrove Oval was a particular highlight and a unique celebration of the history both of our club in particular, and of rugby league in general. The ball relay, which connected the game at Birchgrove Oval with the Wests Tigers v South Sydney game at Sydney Cricket Ground later in the afternoon, was an equally

wonderful celebration of the history of rugby league. It will live long in the memory of those who attended and it placed our club at the very peak of achievement in terms of the quality of our centenary celebrations.

The Hall of Fame dinner in July, 008 was another highlight. We were able to bring Pat Devery from the United States of America back to his home at Balmain Tigers. He was reunited with his team mates from the 197 premiership win in Harry Bath and Sid Ryan. The night had a particular poignancy. At the Hall of Fame dinner, “From Fraser to Farah” was launched, the history of the Balmain Junior League. Its legacy will remain with everybody associated with our club for many years into the future. We owe a great debt of gratitude to the author Chris Karas and those who assisted him with the research including Austin Hoyle, John Stanton and Geoff Large.

The club recognised the contributions of many people who have had an association with it by awarding over four hundred and fifty centenary medals. One had the feeling that the medal program provided a connection (and in some cases, reconnection) between many Tigers and their club. It is a connection which will remain strong for years to come.

STATE CUP

The Balmain Ryde-Eastwood State Cup team struggled in the early part of the season to find consistent levels of performance. They mixed some very good wins with some quite poor losses, and they were badly affected by injuries in the early to mid part of the season. At one

stage in the season, they were at the bottom of the table. However, they then won their last five matches in a row to finish in a finals position, playing with the type of spirit which makes everyone proud to be associated with a Tigers team. In the first week of the finals, they beat the minor premiers, North Sydney, very convincingly in a match at North Sydney Oval. In the next week, the Manly side proved to be “a bridge too far” after we had looked the likely winners of the game at half time.

Ultimately, it was a season out of which came many positives. Lee Bennett continues to be a shining light as the leader of team and coach Paul Fletcher, in his first year in the role, was outstanding. As always, our relationship with our Ryde-Eastwood partners is a source of great strength for the club and Malcolm Chapple, John Dunlea, Jim McClymont, Harry Bell and Keith Aggett are invaluable with their support.

JUNIOR TEAMS

The SG Ball team and Harold Matthews team both performed moderately, with neither team making the finals series of their competitions. Not withstanding these results, a number of outstanding players are emerging from our juniors. Particular congratulations should go to Aaron Woods and Junior Rogica, who both made various representatives teams culminating in their selection in the Australian Schoolboys team. They are first grade players of the future.

Darren McLean and David Brooks deserve our thanks for their performance as coaches. David Brooks, as a former first grade player, State of Origin player, Tigers life member, and Tigers Hall of Fame member, makes a wonderful contribution to the junior development of our club. We are indeed lucky to have the likes of him moulding the Tigers of the future.

LEICHHARDT OVAL

Further work has been completed on Leichhardt Oval with a new playing surface being laid over the off season. The playing surface had become something of an issue over the past few years with no work having had been done on it since the 1970’s when the ground was completely remodelled. The playing surface will now be state of the art. Additionally, there has been a complete refit of the dressing sheds, the media facilities have been upgraded and additional ladies toilets have been placed under the Heritage stand. The next work which is planned for the oval is an upgrade of the Latcham Robinson stand.

We shortly propose to make a major announcement regarding the future of the Heritage stand.

8 9Foundation Club 1908 - 008

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT continued In the past couple of annual reports, we have provided cautionary advice to members regarding the critical nature of the approval process to the future of the club. Put in short terms, the club does not have a future without the redevelopment of the site proceeding. The impact of smoking legislation, and the full effect of the poker machine tax, have made the current operation of the club unviable. Although great comfort can be taken from the approval of the masterplan, the major economic crash in the second half of 008 has caused additional significant problems for us in obtaining the appropriate development partner to proceed with the project. Finalising the appointment of a development partner remains critical to the future of the club, as the trading performance of the Leagues Club continues to deteriorate with the impacts of the gaming tax, smoking legislation and the general economic circumstances.

As always, my sincere thanks go to all of the many volunteers who contribute their time for the benefit of our club. Without them, we simply would not have a club. Your contributions are always appreciated and never taken for granted. In particular, my thanks to the President of the Junior League, Robert Henderson and to those who support him on the Board of Junior League. Leagues Club President Kevin Rooney and Deputy Chairman of the Football Club, Leslie Glen, were made life members of the club at the last AGM in what was a fitting, and overdue, recognition of the work that they do for the club. Their support of the club and everything associated with it is invaluable. In particular, Leslie Glen as Chairman of the Centenary Committee, was responsible for the best Centenary celebrations of any of the foundation clubs. My colleagues on the Board make volunteer contributions to the club both of their time and their expertise. and those contributions should never be underestimated. Michael Keech, David Kelly and Jennie Webster remain outstanding contributors in our football operations in Junior League areas and in Tim Camiller, our CEO, we have a leader who is second to none. I acknowledge all of them.

I look forward to a successful 009 where the future of the Tigers will be cemented for the next one hundred years.

David TroddenChairman

WESTS TIGERS

Wests Tigers were again disappointing in failing to make the finals series for the third year in succession. At times, they showed great promise, but consistency proved to be elusive. To be fair to them, injuries were not kind. There was only one single match during the whole season in which their four major strike players in Robbie Farah, Benji Marshall, Brett Hodgson and Todd Payten played in the same team together. On one hand, most clubs would have difficulty in coping with any injury situation that produces such a result. On the other hand, injuries are a fact of life which we need to cope with if we are to be consistently successful.

A number of players were successful in making representative teams, the highlight being Dene Halatau, Bronson Harrison and Benji Marshall being part of the New Zealand team which won the World Cup in November, 008.

The future continues to look rosy. Much interest has been created by the signing of British International forward Gareth Ellis and the long term re-signing of Robbie Farah constitutes a huge vote of confidence in the future of the club. As a former Balmain junior, his appointment as club captain was wonderful news for everyone in the club. It will be an inspiration for every junior player who aspires to be the player that Robbie Farah is.

Steve Noyce resigned as CEO of Wests Tigers during the course of 008. During the period of his leadership of Wests Tigers, he played a pivotal role in bringing on field success to the organisation with the 00 premiership as well as establishing Wests Tigers as a market leader off the field in the areas of marketing, merchandising and finance. History will record him as being one of the most important figures to participate in the Wests Tigers organisation. To thank him for his efforts with Wests Tigers barely seems to be an adequate recognition for what he has done. Steve has been replaced by Scott Longmuir, who was previously in charge of Wests Tigers marketing. We look forward with confidence to Scott bringing further success to Wests Tigers.

LEAGUES CLUB REDEVELOPMENT

After what seems like interminable delays, Leichhardt Council, in June, 008 approved a masterplan for the redevelopment of the leagues club site. The masterplan has increased the floor space ratio on the site from 1.5:1 to 3.9:1. The masterplan allows for a mixed use development consisting of residential units, a supermarket, specialty retail shops, commercial offices and a new club.

10 11Foundation Club 1908 - 008

CEO’S REPORT008 was a year of many contrasts for Balmain Tigers, from the highs of the Centenary celebrations and the eventual approval of an amendment to the planning controls for the Leagues Club site (“the Masterplan”), to the lows of disappointment in Wests Tigers missing the finals series and the impacts on trading that the continual delays to the Masterplan have had on our Leagues Club business.

Not many organisations are afforded the opportunity to celebrate their Centenary. Our Club had that opportunity in 008 and it was wonderful to see the excitement and sense of satisfaction in so many people at each of the events recognising our Centenary.

There have been varied opinions on the way rugby league generally commemorated its Centenary, however I am sure all Tigers fans are very proud of the way our Club came together and in many fitting ways celebrated the occasions that marked our contribution to rugby league over 100 years.

There are many people to thank for making the celebrations come to pass. Centenary Committee Chairman Leslie Glen and his fellow Committee Members (Kevin Humphreys, Peter Duffy and Michelle Nielsen) and Balmain Tigers Chairman David Trodden helped shape the events throughout the year.

None of the events would have been as successful and memorable without the input and presence of the Centenary Ambassadors. It was a highlight for many of us to have such incredible support from so many ‘Tigers Legends’.

The implementation of the Board’s strategy to redevelop the Leagues Club site has encountered many challenges. Over the last few years we have reported to you the decision-making difficulties encountered with Leichhardt Council and the severe impact it has had on the Leagues Club business. By way of example, most of our financial resources have been applied to securing sites adjoining the Club to enable the consolidation of the site for development purposes and to the processing costs of the Masterplan application. This has obviously restricted our capacity to invest in other areas such as expansive areas to meet the challenges of the new non-smoking legislation or the diversity of our business in the interest of long-term prosperity. A significant reduction in our income, particularly from gaming, resulted in 2008, which continues to place pressure on our cashflow.

Much of our focus in recent times has been on securing a development partner. This too has proven difficult given the severe impact global economic conditions have had on the development market. A successful outcome in this area is vital to our future and we continue to work very hard to secure an appropriate development partner.

Despite these significant pressures we remain confident of delivering a long-term solution and will continue to offer great value, great service, a wonderful experience for all our Members and the vast

support of the local and wider ‘Tigers’ community.

David Trodden and Michael Keech have extensively covered the highs and lows and many achievements of the 008 football season in their reports. I simply wish to endorse their support and offer my gratitude to the many volunteers, coaching and training staff, Mike, Jennie, David, Lyn and Stapo for their tireless efforts throughout 008. Congratulations also to all those players who achieved representative honours. I am confident the experience and expertise assembled at the helm of our representative teams for the upcoming season will have a profound impact on the many rising stars in our playing ranks and undoubtedly provide an opportunity like no other for those aspiring to Wests Tigers and further representation.

Our capacity to participate in the State Cup competition at such a professional level is possible thanks to the support we receive from the Ryde Eastwood Football Club. To Malcolm Chapple and his Board – your friendship and support is warmly welcomed by everyone at Tigers.

Upgrade works at Leichhardt Oval continue to progress. We will very shortly have a playing surface of the highest quality for our teams to play on. We are well advanced in the planning for the next phase of the Latchem Robinson grandstand upgrade that will deliver a significant uplift in the quality of the corporate offering and enable the Club to invite wider community use of the facility. Leichhardt Oval is a jewel. In 008 we extended our lease over the ground for a further ten years. It will remain a jewel for Tigers fans for many more years to come.

Wests Tigers on field results continue to taunt and frustrate. Off the field, Wests Tigers continues to enhance its status as a leading brand in the NRL competition and produce financial results that are the envy of most other clubs, particularly in the competitive Sydney market. I am extremely grateful for the contribution Steve Noyce made to Wests Tigers and look forward to working closely with newly appointed CEO, Scott Longmuir, as he strives to add to Wests Tigers success.

008 was another challenging year highlighted by the passion and excitement generated by the Centenary celebrations. I am sure all those who participated will have fond memories of the many wonderful events. Thank you to David Trodden, Leslie Glen, Kevin Rooney and the whole Tigers Board for their unwavering support and guidance provided to me and the Management team. Thank you to all the hard working Tigers Staff who also found great joy in working throughout our Centenary year. Congratulations to Bob Henderson and the Junior League Board on creating another year of spirited participation in our junior league.

Despite the numerous challenges confronting our Club we remain focused on pursuing every opportunity that will assist us reaching the critical objective of ensuring long-term sustainability of our football operation. With the Centenary behind us, we can look forward to another rousing edition of the Hall of Fame on 19 May, 009 at the famous SCG and to invoke great memories as we showcase the 0 year celebration of our glorious 1969 Premiership victory and team.

Best wishes for 009.

FOOTBALL MANAGER’S REPORT008 will be remembered as another exciting year for the Balmain Tigers, being one of reflection and celebration in our Centenary year, and for many exciting achievements on and off the field.

VB State Cup (formerly Premier League)Season 008 was one of structural transition following the introduction of the U20’s National Youth Competition (NYC – which replaced Jersey Flegg) and created an exciting unknown for Coach Paul Fletcher and his team.

Our season commenced extremely well with the State Cup side taking out the inaugural International 9’s played at Cabramatta.

Our start to the season proper was very slow and littered with narrow losses from winning positions and some injuries to key personnel. From a fleeting look at the wooden spoon, the boys rallied over the back half of the season – which included classy victories over eventual Premiers (Wentworthville) and

runners-up (Newtown) in the last two rounds – to claim eighth position and a semi-finals berth. A rousing victory against minor premier North’s was not followed up the next week when we lost to Manly two weeks out from the Grand Final.

I would like to congratulate all staff, volunteers and sponsors that worked tirelessly and encouraged the team in support of the State Cup Program.

World Cup and Origin AchievementsGavin Cowan was selected for Scotland and Ryan Tandy played for Ireland after both players had great seasons. Ryan Tandy was also selected in the NSW Residents Team that defeated Queensland prior to Origin in Brisbane.

Harold Matthews At the start of the season everyone was looking forward to seeing what the boys had to offer, as we felt they had not shown their full potential during the trials. At times they surprised even their coach, David Brooks, with their on-field skills. I hope that they all learnt from David and his staff during the season. There were some disappointing results but our job is to develop the players’ skills on and off the field which I think we have accomplished.

Thanks to David Brooks, Ken Stapleton, Wally Carpenter, Matt Dwyer, Allan Jarvis and Peter Mortimer for their great work in preparing the team. I would also like to thank Olsen Filipaina for his input during the pre season.

S G BallIt was a season of ups and downs for the S G Ball. The team played a great style of football for most of the season and had some great wins (defeating Newcastle in Newcastle and the eventual Premiers, Roosters) but unfortunately lost momentum at crucial times during the season and narrowly missed out on the semis.Thank you to Darren McLean, Chris Brown, Ken Stapleton, Bob Cooper, Danny O’Neill, Robbie Stewart,

Mike Keech

Les Hobbs and Rob Whyte for the dedication and effort shown during the year.

I hope that all of the players take the knowledge and experience they have gained working with the wonderful staff and use it to the best of their ability in the future to reach their potential as players. Congratulations go to all of the Balmain players who gained selection in NSW Schoolboy representative teams, NYC with the Wests Tigers, NSW State Cup and the Wests Tigers CUBS at the conclusion of the Junior Rep competition.

Talent ID ProgramThe talent ID program was a success throughout the July school holidays. We played games against Wests, Souths and Cronulla in the u/1, u/1, u/1 & u/17 age divisions. We also hosted clubs during the October school holidays to finalise the program. Thanks to Eastridge FC, Ballina Seagulls FC, Auckland FC.

Season LaunchOur Centenary Season of both the Tigers and the BDJRL commenced with the season launch that included past greats, current representative players, officials, junior league clubs and Wests Tigers players and staff. Junior Clubs were introduced and representative players were presented their jerseys by past greats, player signing allowed the community and fans to meet the new players and admire the greats.

Awards NightWe re-launched the Awards Night in 008 which brought together over 00 people including players, to parents, officials, volunteers and supporters at Balmain Leagues Club. The feedback has been amazing and we will continue this night with 7 November, 009 as the indicated date. Referee ScholarshipsIn 008 we introduced two scholarships in conjunction with the referees association to allow for the further development of referees through the U1’s, North Coast and U17’s Tour to Catherine, NT.

CommunityAll levels of Balmain Tigers participated in many community activities in 008 including:• State Cup side training at each local club ground and the opportunity to mix with the kids and coaches,• Fan Day at ANZ Stadium in February,
