Introduction► Situated on the eastern side of the
state► Divided into 7 administrative
divisions- Ballari, Siruguppa,Hospet, Kudligi, Sandur, Hadagaliand Hagaribommanahalli
► Known as the ‘Steel city of SouthIndia’
► Rich in mineral resources like ironore, manganese ore, red oxide andferrous oxide, quartz, granite
► Referred as the ‘Jeans Capital’ ofIndia
► Presence of brands like PointBlank, Walker, Dragonfly andPodium are there in the district
► The Ballari Thermal Power Stationis the 2nd largest thermal plant inKarnataka
The district takes its name from the word Balari, which refers to goddess Durugamma whohad manifested herself on the town. It was founded by Harihara, also known as Hakka, andhis brother Bukka Raya. It is noted for its historical heritage, and for being celebrated for thecapital of Vijayanagara kingdom at Hampi. The area, which was once the “City of Victory’, fellinto political turmoil after the fall of Vijayanagara in 1565. The district was transferred to theerstwhile Mysore state from Madras state in 1953.

► GDDP is INR 32,180 Crore in the year 2014 -15 (at Current Prices)► Urbanisation in the district is 38% compared to 39% in the state► Ballari is an agrarian economy with over 50% of the net area under
cultivation.► Agriculture and allied industries have the highest contribution to
the GSDP for the district► Rice and puffed rice form some of the major industrial clusters in the
district► More than 20% of the total units are agro and food processing based.
