ChallengesToday, high-strength to ultra-high-strength sheet steel has become thestandard in crash-relevant automotivestructural parts. When such compo-nents are processed, the high-strengthcharacteristics of the metal result in sig-nificant stresses on the tool surface, particularly in highly loaded radius zones. In many cases, this causes premature tool failure. Similar problemsare encountered in cold solid formingoperations. With high degrees of metaldeformation, the fatigue load of thebase material is often exceeded, andthis too, can lead to tool failure. Addi-tionally, cold welding on the tool isoften a problem. The consequencesare increased maintenance and adeterioration of the surface quality ofthe part.
The solutionThese problems can be solved withBALINIT LUMENA. The TiAlN coatingwith minimised residual stress signifi-cantly reduces abrasive wear in form-ing tools. The cold welding problem islargely deminished by the chemicalcomposition of the coating. Cleaningintervals are extended and at the sametime, product quality is improved.
BALINIT LUMENA: Fulfils the toughest requirements in forming
The BALINIT LUMENA coating hasthe following features:
- High hardness - An optimised hardness to residual
compressive stress ratio - High abrasive wear resistance - Improved chemical and thermal
resistance- Reduced coefficient of friction- High achievable coating thicknesses
(comparable with CVD)

A comparison of our environmentallyfriendly PVD coatings with the CVD or TD coatings used so far in formingapplications reveals that BALINIT
LUMENA delivers better or equivalentresults without the risk of tool distor-tion that can occur due to the highprocess temperatures involved in theapplication of CVD and TD coatings.
Applications: - Forming of high-strength sheet
steel in the automotive industry (for instance bumpers, longitudinalmembers, side-impact protectors)
- Cold solid forming of steering anddrive elements, transmission parts, etc.
- Sheet metal forming (clutches, etc.)- Hydroforming - Aluminium profile extrusion
