1.1 Event activities:

Balingup town centre is approximately 500 meters from the oval, 10 minute walk along a footpath crossing the Balingup Brook near the bridge at the northern end of the town.

1.3 Waste facilities: The number & location of existing rubbish bins

24 x 270L wheelie bins with bin toppers o 8 general, 8 recycling, 8 organic o Owned by BSFFD & stored in BSFFD shed at northern end of oval

10 x 270L wheelie bins o Borrowed from the Shire Depot in Balingup- no toppers

50L plastic bins (can be used as supplementary stallholder bins if required)

12 bins placed around area- locked to poles- owned by the Shire Labour

BSFFD committee employ two men on an hourly rate to empty bins during the event Saturday (8am to 4pm) and Sunday (9am to 11am) to clean up site post event.

Skip Bins

Hire 8 x 3 cu metre skip bins from Hastie Waste in Donnybrook.

Label skips- 3 general waste, 2 cardboard only and 3 re-cycling Waste Collection

Hastie Waste- Delivery day prior, pick up Monday after.

Organic Waste collected by Donnybrook Shire collection on Monday after event. Waste to be retained in skip bins and taken to front of the Recreation Centre and placed in a group near Recreation Centre bins.

1.4 Support 2017 WA Waste Authority Grant for fund to purchase of bins, toppers, stickers and

banners

Regional Waste Management- Staff provided support to: o Develop the grant, purchase the goods o Conduct a waste audit o Develop a waste management plan for the event o Promote re-cycling through a stall and display at the event

BSFFD Committee funding to pay for labour

Committee volunteers to manage and oversee the project

2. Stallholder Waste In 2017, there is no requirement that stallholders have recyclable or compostable products, although they were informed about our planned recycling efforts through several communication efforts:

Direct verbal communication on the day by the program manager and rubbish team regarding need for personal bins and classification of skips and need to flattemn cardboard.

Below are estimates the types of waste from each stall category to be able to get a picture of the bins required. This also assists in identifying and potentially minimising unnecessary waste from stallholders.

2.1. Food Stalls Food stalls are placed in two main areas:

Pig Promenade, Llama Lane in south

Alpaca Valley, Scarecrow Alley in North Spreadsheet for 2017 to be examined by waste team to ensure sufficient bin provisision. In 2017- 67 food vans and stalls. Expected waste: Organics waste- High levels. Orange juice stall requires an additional bin for waste Recycling- Medium levels as no request yet for recyclable containers. Some coffee cups, plates, lids, plastic cutlery General- High levels.

2.2. Market Stalls Market stalls are placed throughout the event. Main groupings are:

Craft- in Market Square, Cow Crossing, Rooster Road and Duck Walk

Horticultural- plants, seedlings- in Fleece Street, Cow Crossing

Wine tastings and sales- in Duck Walk, Rooster Road

Home made food products- Goat Path Spreadsheet for 2017 to be examined by waste team to ensure sufficient bin provision. In 2017- 211 market stalls. Expected Waste Levels: Organic - Low levels. Recycling- Medium levels – cardboard packaging predominantly General- Medium levels.

2.3 Livestock Stalls Livestock stalls are placed at the northern end of the oval along Goose Bend. Spreadsheet for 2017 to be examined by waste team to ensure sufficient bin provision. In 2017- 17 livestock stalls. Expected Waste Levels: Organic- High levels- animal poo, straw Recycling- Low General- Low 2.4 Farm Machinery and Equipment Stalls Farm machinery and equipment stalls are placed in the northern half of the oval in Scarecrow Alley, Walter Ford, Tractor Lane and Olive Grove Spreadsheet for 2017 to be examined by waste team to ensure sufficient bin provision. 2.6. Eating Areas Four main eating areas have been developed in line with music areas (marked on map):

In middle of Pig Promenade, east of the stage area

At eastern end of Pig Promenade

At Recreation Centre/ tennis court area- bins provided by Recreation Centre for kitchen catering.

Between Fashion tent and Kids Kitchen

3. Waste Generation and Quantities 2017 Estimations: Cardboard: 6 cubic meters (stallholders asked to flatten boxes) Re-cycling: 6 cubic meters General: 10 cubic meters Organics: 2 cubic meters 2015- 5 3 cu meter skip bins provided- all general waste 2016- 6 3 cu meter skip bins provided- included 2 re-cycling As yet, no restrictions on the type of waste vendors are allowed to use. Audit of bins to be conducted on the waste from the event in 2017.

4. Waste Stations

There will be 8 waste stations of three bins. These will consist of:

a general waste bin with a red topper,

a recycling bin with a yellow topper, and

a light green food organics bin (provided by Shire) with a green topper.

All bins will have bin toppers to identify the waste type with relevant stickers and have banners that are readily seen from a distance to identify waste stations. Full 240 litre bins will be exchanged for empty bins throughout the event by two men hired for this purpose. The contents of general waste and recycling bins will be transferred to skip bins placed around the site. Skip bins and delivered prior to the event and removed after the event by Hastie Waste, Donnybrook. Stallholders are responsible for folding and placing any packaging cardboard into labelled skip bins at the end of the event. These skips are also collected by Hastie Waste. Organics are left in green 240 litre bins and taken to the front of the Recreation Centre and left in a group. These are collected by the Shire Waste truck on Monday after the event.

4.1 Waste Station locations The recycling and organics stations will be placed strategically near food stalls, at eating areas, exits, entrances and throughout the event area. See attached map for bin placement in 2017. Eight skip bins are placed strategically around the site to best suit stall needs. These are:

5. Promotion of waste system/handling

7. Performance Review The following recommendations have been made for 2018 event:

Compulsory compostable packaging by all stallholders to simplify which bin the public need to use

Promotion of compostable bins prior to event, so educate public before they arrive

More signage around food vendors and bins educating public where to place items

Back of house skip bins, ensure there are adequate recycling and organics along with the general waste

Placement of skip bins out of the way of the general public to avoid contamination

Potable water stations and drinking fountains and encourage public to bring their own water bottle
