The month of March was named after one of the ancient deities of Rome, Mars. Mars was a deity of war and

conquests and was widely revered in ancient times. Let us celebrate the month of March by reminding ourselves that the deity the month was named after epitomized not just war and conquest, but more importantly he epitomized success and achievements too.

Everyone aspires for success, some are seen as successful, and some as working hard to achieve what they believe is success. Success is often defined as achieving a goal or objective, some believe they know what they want, and others are still struggling to find out their definition of success. Regardless of how we define success, BEO enjoins all readers to celebrate success and encourage the pursuit of success.

BEO recognizes that parents also aspire to be successful, for themselves and for their children. In “Reaching for Success, and Keeping It” we invite parents to evaluate their own view and thoughts on success. Happiness and fulfillment are most important in life, financial rewards come after these. Let us always pursue

goals and objectives that will bring us closer to happiness and fulfillment, financial rewards will surely follow.

Successful parents seldom get into a misunderstanding based on financial reasons. However, life is not all rosy; there will always be a time of challenges and difficulties. In “Success is a Family Matter”, we invite couples to examine how they manage their family finances and share some insights that can help them in financial management of family resources.

Lastly, we celebrate success by celebrating the wellbeing of our respective communities. In “Let Us Nurture Successful Communities” we share insights on how the wellbeing of a community sustains the wellbeing of its members and vice versa. We invite everyone to evaluate how their communities play a role in their lives and encourage everyone to work towards a common good for everyone.

Success, this month and every month thereafter!

Success for those who are younger may seem to be a corner office on the top floor of a city, an impressive outfit with stars and medals, or a large mansion with an Olympic-size pool. Success is a continuing process, it is fluid and it changes, the corner office, military stars, and mansions do not define success, most who have these already realized that they must continue to reach for success.

I was a vice president with an international bank when I was only 30 years old, a few years before that I defined success as being a vice president in one of the leading global banks before I am 30. Upon being appointed as vice president in such a bank, I realized that I must continue to work to stay successful, and “success” as I previously defined became an empty word. Circumstances have forced me to evaluate my definition of success, how to reach for success and stay successful.

3. Never give up, all storms will pass, all challenges can be resolved. When I was a fresh business school graduate I faced so many difficulties in getting a career I wanted. I committed myself to search for a specific career; eventually I found and accepted a job offer that fitted my plans. Let us always remind ourselves that there are opportunities even at the most difficult times and let us never give up on our aspirations.

4. Maintain our good health and wellbeing. Our health is something that we cannot replace. We may lose a job, we may lose our revenues, and we may lose our customers, all these can be replaced with a new job, with a new business, and with customers from a new market. Our health, once gone, is something that is irreplaceable. Let us strive to maintain our good health by exercising regularly and eating right.

Below are guiding thoughts for those who are thinking of success:

1. Develop a personal vision for yourself. What are your passions in life? How do you see your passions guiding you towards success? I believe that it is a personal process, something that is best done on our own. I realize that I am passionate about economic growth and development, and in my pursuit of opportunities these motivate me.

2. Serve others and the universe will work to serve your purposes. Success is service, service to your customers, services to employees, service to your soldiers, or service to the less privileged members of the community. You will find peace in success when you define success as service. Celebrate success by sharing it with others, encourage success to multiply.

A community is similar to an ecosystem, families and institutions exist together within a community and contribute to the welfare of the community. Just like an ecosystem, a community can thrive if the families and institutions therein collaborate towards a common good, towards the continuing development of the community and its wellbeing.

The wellbeing of the community also sustains the wellbeing of its members:

1. Develop a vision of the community. Members of the community, families and institutions, should collaborate and discuss their aspirations for the community that they are a part of. This must be done together because one, two, or ten members alone cannot effectively collaborate to pursue community development activities.

2. Identify and evaluate “assets” within the community. These include families, institutions, natural assets, and infrastructures within the community. These are what the community can leverage on in achieving its vision.

3. Education and incentives work best for community development. Legislations and rules may also help, however, these seldom encourage member to collaborate effectively. Let us meet with other members of our community and inform everyone of the benefits for all in collaborating towards a common goal.

4. Identify, evaluate, and select the best community development projects. Collaborate with other communities and members of other communities to achieve mutually beneficial results. Each community has a different set of assets from another community, development projects must be able to leverage on the community’s existing assets. There is a finite budget for community development projects, identify the best way to raise funds for the community, perhaps there is government financial programs to support community development projects, perhaps there are NGOs within and outside of the community that can support its projects.

5. The importance of community aesthetics must not be understated. The aesthetics of a community create its image, and the image of a community sustains the wellbeing of its members, families and institutions, among others.

6. Select the right leaders to represent the community. Similar to a corporation, the leadership of a community is key to achieving its strategic vision and objectives. Members must carefully evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of potential leaders of the community and select the best committed ones who will help the community collaborate and pursue community development initiatives.

It is strike three for the Maison Ktisune Parisien Tour series! Asia is on the 2015 hotlist for a full pack of Kitsune’s infamous in- store events and parties. Escalier Jakarta and Bali are chosen as the selected stores in Indonesia to launch its “Parisien Tour’collection. The ‘Parisien Tour’ is initiated from the idea of creating a unique experience for Kitsune’s stockists by building a synergy between the core of the brand: music and fashion. Key is to aim brand awareness around Maison Kitsune and to generate a direct commercial opportunity to the selected stores. Next to a capsule collection, inspired by the quiessential Parisien lifestyle, the Kitsune Club Night captivates the music side of the brand and creates an added value to the store event.

On the fashion side, Maison Kitsuné (as the clothing label is known), is currently available at more than 300 points of sale and counts influential retailers like Bergdorf Goodman, Colette, Barneys

New York, Dover Street Market, Isetan and Lane Crawford among its stockists. The brand also operates three retail stores in Paris, two in Tokyo and one in New York — and by February 2015 will open a fourth store in Paris as well as a store in Hong Kong. A second New York store is also in the works.

Kitsuné’s clothing offering is divided into the “high quality timeless products” and the “fashion collection” The former is made up of knitwear, blazers, shirts and polos and references Ralph Lauren and Brooks Brothers while the latter, which includes more visual and daring pieces, is inspired by brands like Comme des Garçons. The blend allows Kitsuné to capitalise on a wide range of customers. “Our customers are between 15 to 60 years old, maybe older in Japan. We do t-shirts and hats but we also have collaborations with Weston and Edward Green in the same shop.

Every so often, people seek to eat out at a place that looks as good as the taste of its food. If that is the case, Bistrot is a place to go. Launched in the summer of 2012, this vintage restaurant seeks to provide more than just another dining experience in Bali. At Bistrot, customers can enjoy their meals while surrounded by pieces of furniture and décor that evoke the nostalgia of past eras.

Bistrot’s general manager, Yassine Ouldammar, says that detail is with no doubt the word that best describes the success of the restaurant. Such observation is evident in every single aspect of the services Bistrot offers. From valet parking, to the creation of their dishes, and the setting decoration, Bistrot staff pays close attention to every detail in order to best serve their customers.

As you walk around the restaurant, you’ll come across antique typewriters, lamps, wardrobes, and many other objects that will send you back in time. Every piece of furniture has been carefully positioned along the floors and walls of the wooden

building that makes up the setting of Bistrot with the purpose of highlighting the restaurant’s period feel. Behind the whole conceptualization of this place is the mastermind of Zohra Boukhari, a Bali-based interior decorator and furniture designer who is also the owner of Bistrot. In fact, some of her latest creations are available for purchase at her store, Balquisse Living, on Sunset Road.

Although many of its dishes are French inspired, Bistrot’s kitchen offers a wide range of items that come from different places of the world. Their specialties are the meat dishes, which are made with imported meat cuts that meet global standards of quality. It is important to note that Bistrot also provides menu options for the younger members of the family, who will surely find something to eat besides Bistrot’s tasty desserts.

When you visit Bistrot, make sure you are ready to stay for a while. It is hard to stay on your seat for too long when there are many details to explore around the building. In fact, make sure your phone is charged. Whether it is because of the food, or because of the decoration, you will likely want to take some photos of your experience at Bistrot, which you will hardly get at other places in the island.

Art is an important factor in the overall development of a person. However, after living in Bali for a while, people might start feeling like running out of options in regards to where to go to exploit their creativity. For that reason, we visited Jenggala and explored their art activities, which are designed to help everyone express their talents and explore their skills through ceramic art.

Jenggala is well known for its prestigious ceramic products distributed across Bali and other parts of Indonesia. On the other hand, Jenggala in Jimbaran is also known for a daily program called, “The Paint a Pot Program,” in which anyone can participate and paint their own ceramic pot.

By Josue Martinez

Jenggala’s

At the start of the program, attendants are provided with a white pot of their choosing and painting utensils. Once they are set up, one or two staff members of Jenggala provide guidance as to how to depict a design on the pot. The purpose of the staff is merely for assistance as they are aware that the program is meant to help attendants explore their own creativity. They will stay near by just in case you need their help to either fix or move on with your piece.

You can expect to make friends as you paint if you participate of the program during the months of July and August, which is when the program is regularly full. Nonetheless, if you prefer more space for you and your group, it is recommended that you visit during the low season.

Visiting LILIN this evening for our family dinner, just the night before my mother will be going back to Jakarta, giving her the experience of a great ambiance in the magnificent setting of Bali Potato Head Beach Club.

As we were welcome by Lena, a charming beautiful host, we were given table 29 where we were able to have the best view from LILIN. As we go through their menu, LILIN serves authentic Indonesian cuisine using the

fresh and local ingredients which is supporting the local farmer. The restaurant is designed in a contemporary style, elegant yet informal.

Chef Gede Susila shared with us how he has created an innovative menu inspired by the traditional home and street cooked food of Indonesia. With a Tapas style, it is great to share and to be able to try the different variety menu they offered. The tapas style is offered a choice of 2, 4 and 6 varieties for lunch and 4 varieties for dinner.

To close our dinner, one of the waiter Yuda, warmly offered us some special dessert that was made from cassava and also the pannacota. It was definitely a great evening for us and a place to be in our next visit with our children and family and experience vibrant colors and flavors of recipes gathered from across the vast Indonesian archipelago are matched only by the uniquely designed al fresco space.

The day before Nyepi, the streets of Bali are decorated with giant statues ready to be paraded along the main street for all the

crowd to cheer and drive away the bad spirits it represent by banging on pans and all sorts to make loud noises.

Ogoh-ogoh are effigies representing demons and negative energy to be rid of the island prior to Nyepi, the day of purification.

Each village will proudly display their Ogoh-Ogoh on the street side for the public to see and take pictures . Around Canggu, gigantic Ogoh-ogoh can be spotted along the banjars in Pantai Berawa, Pantai Batu Bolong and Pantai Pererenan. Almost each banjar creates their special, better looking and bigger than the next one. This year, some pretty incredible looking Ogoh-ogoh were spotted throughout Munggu - Kapal area.

COuPLE OF THE MONTH

Donald

As we drive to Canggu from Batubelig and on Jalan Pantai Berawa we noticed a cozy Bungalow with a beautiful natural set up and lucky that we got an excellent space to park.

We were welcomed by the beautiful ambiance

inside out that definitely shows the passion of Giovanna and Donald in what they are doing; Bungalow Living and Gallery is quite a realization of their dream. The music background do shows Donald’s love in music and how it blends well with his talent in playing the saxophone and sitar. And the beautiful lifestyle shop is well decorated by Giovanna, blending the colors and flavors of Bali and India. The books on display reflected their love and passion about life.

They have decided to stay in Bali since 5 years ago after 12 years of frequent travelling in and out of the island. Giovanna believed that being part of the culture is one of the important aspects that contribute to the success of Bungalow. Donald as a Balinese understands well the needs of their staffs and this contribute a major key in building up the staff ’s service

excellence. The couples do keep their staffs in a very personal way and having each staff ’s need catered individually.

Giovanna and Donald loved the Sunday Market at Batu Jimbar, Sanur where they are able to cherish the old Bali environment, where people are more important than just being. They can see how relationship and communication in real life do still exist, people smiles and shares table, they talk and chat instead

of being busy in their gadget. Yes it is undeniable that Bali is growing, we couldn’t stop the development yet if we can maintain the culture and humanity of this island. It would be a great thing that we can actually give to our community.

Blending is an important key for Bungalow Living, for its success in relationship, family and business.

Every parent wants his or her children to succeed in life, whether the children’s career paths will lead them to become an artist, a CEO, an entrepreneur, or a military general. When these children are still in school, parents want to see them get high grades and distinguish themselves from other classmates with straight A’s, honors, and medals.

Most of these children will be able to achieve the goals that parents set for them in school, and some may even attain their childhood aspirations. Unfortunately a few of these children will fail and lag behind their classmates in school, the parents will be disappointed, and in the worst cases, both parents and children will never see their aspirations realized. Parents must always be reminded that a high achiever can be raised through unconditional love and plenty of motivation and encouragement, parents must never relate their love to their children’s accomplishments.

As parents let us raise our children to become healthy achievers:

1. Encourage our children to develop a vision of himself or herself in the future. The most successful companies have visions that inspire the leadership and the entire organization, a future that attracts their customers too. Allow your children to motivate themselves by encouraging them to develop a vision for themselves, and to aspire for their future selves, then continuously inspire them to nurture their aspirations.

2. We must ensure our children recognize the value of education regardless of what their aspirations are. Children must learn to accept that education is always priority, TV and video games come after all academic requirements are properly attended too, home work and family come first before fun and games.

3. Healthy high achievers are raised in an environment that values respect and self-esteem. Unconditional love for our children is necessary in such an environment, we should not be angry at our children when they fail, instead we must motivate them, we respect their efforts and nurture their self esteem by encouraging them to resolve their problems again, by providing guidance and sharing our own insights on how to best resolve their problems. We should not instruct our children by offering a step by step solution, we share some insights and allow them to identify the best solutions that they believe may work.

4. Parents must always encourage and guide children towards emotional mastery. Feelings and emotions do not begin when we reach adulthood; children experience different feelings and emotions too. As parents we must explain why certain feelings come about in life and offer a guide on how to manage these feelings.

QuOTES OF THE MONTH

“You must make a decision that you are going to move on. It wont happen automatically. You will have to rise up and say, ‘I don’t care how hard this is, I don’t care how disappointed I am, I’m not going to let this get the best of me. I’m moving on with

my life.”

“You cannot expect victory and plan for defeat.” ~ Joel Osteen, Your Best Life Now: 7 Steps to Living at Your Full Potential

Family finance is never a problem when cash is overflowing. Couples often agree to maintain a joint bank account; such an arrangement changes when cash becomes scarce. The husband may start arguing that he is contributing more than the wife and it is just proper that his daily fine dining expenses is supported by the joint account. The wife on the other hand may argue that her contribution to the joint account is much more significant compared to her husband’s.

People have different spending habits, even couples who have spent years together as husband and wife. Marriage is not just a physical and emotional union, it is a financial union as well. Family finance is best managed together by the husband and wife, as a married couple, as a loving couple, for the benefit of the family.

The management of family finances is similar to the management of corporate finance, there are revenues, there are expenses, and there is net income. Just a like corporation, if family finance is mismanaged there will not be enough cash to pay for all expenses:

1. Write down the numbers, it allows us to review and evaluate our financial conditions. We do not need to be a finance whiz to manage our family’s money, our revenues are our net paychecks each month

By Al Douglas VillaosSuccess Is A Family Matter2. Determine the expenses that are necessary for the family. These are expenses necessary to live, including house rental, mortgage bills, water utility bills, medical and health insurance, electricity expenses, food and drinks, and transportation expenses. If we have children then their tuition fees must be included. If cash is insufficient for additional expenses, remove these from the list.

3. Save, save, save your earnings. There will always be unexpected bills for the family, especially if there is no medical and health insurance. We never know when there will be emergencies and it is always best if we are financially prepared for such emergencies. We must also save for the family future, the parent’s retirement and the children’s university expenses, among others.

4. Only spend for luxury expenses when cash is more than sufficient for the necessary family expenses and for the more important saving for the family’s future. A budget, outlining family revenues, expenses, and saving, will help couples in managing their family finance together. Involve your children in the budgeting process, use discretion because many children do not need the additional stress of managing money, nevertheless, we can always explain to our children why there will be no Playstation 4 this year. A family with healthy financial conditions is better prepared to enjoy life’s fortune and to face life’s challenges.
