Baker Hostetler was founded on a set of principles that still resonate today: the creation of successful, long-term

relationships with clients; dedication to the profession; and a desire to be good corporate citizens in the communities where we live and work. We are a Firm that values and delivers a diverse and collegial work environment. Our differences allow us to bring a variety of perspectives and experiences as we develop creative solutions to the challenges faced by our clients. It is this culture that enables us to attract and retain outstanding attorneys with diverse backgrounds.

We are proud of the progress we made in 2011 in our continuing efforts to promote diversity and inclusion at Baker Hostetler. During the past year, we added more than 170 lawyers, 47.1% of whom were women and 24.7% of whom were minorities. In 2011, we increased the number of minority partners by 25% and the total number of minority lawyers by 25%. Moreover, 22% of our fall 2011 Associate Class are minorities and 55% are women.

Our first two Diversity Fellows have accepted full-time associate positions in our Washington, D.C., office. In 2012, we will welcome Diversity Fellows in our Columbus and New York offices. We are also proud to announce that this past December, for the first time, one of our Paul D. White Scholars was elected as a partner at the Firm. In May 2012, we will host our Diverse Attorney Conference, which brings together our diverse attorneys and senior members of Firm management. Recruiting, developing and promoting our attorneys of color, our women attorneys and our LGBT attorneys remains an important goal for Baker Hostetler in 2012 and beyond.

We hope you enjoy reading this Diversity and Inclusion 2011 Annual Review and that you share our enthusiasm and optimism for the year ahead.

Recruiting We recognize that in order to serve the needs of our diverse client base, our attorney population needs to be equally diverse. For the past 12 years, more than half of all new Baker Hostetler associates were women and minority attorneys. Many factors contribute to this result, including targeted recruiting of minorities and women at law schools, the Paul D. White Scholarship and Diversity Fellowship programs, and the appointment of diverse lawyers to our Hiring Committees.

We recruit at schools with diverse student populations, attend diversity job fairs throughout the country, participate in diversity clerkship programs, maintain ongoing relationships with local law student diversity organizations and support diversity pipeline initiatives.

This past year, Baker Hostetler participated in the National LGBT Bar Association’s annual Lavender Law Career Fair, a one-day LGBT recruiting fair. Firm representatives met with more than 30 potential recruits from multiple geographic locations.

Paul D. White Scholarship Recipients

Paul D. White Scholarship Program In tribute to Paul D. White, the Firm’s first minority partner and a pioneer for minorities in the legal profession, a scholarship for minority law students was created to provide them with valuable experience early in their careers. The Paul D. White Scholarship was established in 1997 to honor his memory and to encourage law students to appreciate the efforts of those who have come before them. A member of 2011’s partnership class, Houston attorney Rachel Smith became the Firm’s first Paul D. White Scholar to be elected to partner.

Pipeline to Success For several years, many of Baker Hostetler’s offices have hosted interns in partnership with nonprofit organizations and programs focused on encouraging diverse youth to consider careers in the legal profession.

• Each summer, the Cincinnati office welcomes a local minority high school or college student to work at the Firm as part of the Summer Work Experience in Law (SWEL) internship program. SWEL gives students an opportunity to gain exposure to the law school preparation process and legal profession.

• Baker Hostetler’s Cleveland office is a founding sponsor of the St. Martin de Porres High School Corporate Work Study Program. The Firm’s sponsorship exposes young people to “real-world” work situations in a professional setting.

• The Columbus office hosted high school interns this past summer in partnership with the Law and Leadership Institute LLC, which offers youth from underserved communities the opportunity to study law during the summer at an Ohio law school and conclude their program at a law firm.

• This past year, the Denver office coordinated with Bridges to Work, a program supported by the Denver Office of Economic Development-Youth Services meant to facilitate on-the-job training and work-based mentorship opportunities, in sponsoring a high school student for an internship.

• The Houston office works with the Take a Student to Your Employment (TASTE) Program™, which provides at-risk youth with an opportunity to experience work in a business, government, academic or legal environment.

• The New York office, together with the New York City Bar Association, sponsors the Thurgood Marshall Summer Law Internship Program, which places high-achieving inner-city high school students with legal employers for the summer.

Women’s CommitteeIn addition to the Diversity Committee, Baker Hostetler formed a Women's Committee to provide recommendations to management with respect to challenges facing women in the legal profession.

The committee, which includes attorneys from all our offices, is divided into five subcommittees: Hiring/Retention, Social Inclusion, Work/Life Balance, Management and Marketing.

At Baker Hostetler, I have been encouraged to use my strengths to grow as an attorney and as a person. I was elected and continue to serve as the Managing Partner for the Houston office. Additionally, I chair the Women’s Committee and also serve on the Firm’s Diversity Committee. I have achieved these positions at Baker Hostetler while raising a family and leading a very fulfilling life outside of work.

Baker Hostetler Celebrates Great Women of Our TimeIn celebration of women’s history month, Baker Hostetler is proud to host a series of women’s events each year. Throughout 2011, several offices held their own celebrations benefiting numerous nonprofit organizations and featuring remarks by high-profile women in leadership roles.

To conclude this year’s women’s events, Baker Hostetler was proud to make a charitable contribution to the National Women’s History Museum as a Leadership Circle member in memory of former Partner Betty Southard Murphy.

Murphy joined Baker Hostetler’s Washington, D.C., office in 1980 following her years as chair of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). She is the only person to have served as both Chairperson of the NLRB and as administrator of the Wage and Hour Division of the U.S. Department of Labor, both Presidential appointments. When she resigned from the NLRB, she was praised by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the AFL-CIO and the National Association of Manufacturers for her “outstanding contributions.” She received appointments to five other Presidential special commissions, including the International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes and the Commission on the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution.

She spent a lifetime breaking down barriers for women in the legal profession, determined that future generations of women attorneys should benefit from those before them. During her 30-year tenure at Baker Hostetler, she chaired the Employment and Labor group and served on the Firm’s Policy Committee and its Women’s Committee. She was an unparalleled mentor for women and men both inside and outside the Firm.

Murphy passed away on October 16, 2010.
