PART I
INTRODUCTION
This handbook contains information regarding the academic policies and procedures that
govern the Baker College Health Science programs. Students will read this handbook and
keep it with their school records for easy reference. By signing the Acknowledgement
located at the end of the handbook, students acknowledge that they have read this
handbook and understand the material presented. Students are encouraged to review the
Baker College Student Handbook for detailed information on all Baker College policies.
THE PHILOSOPHY OF BAKER COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCE PROGRAMS
The College of Health Science is committed to excellence through quality academic
programs. This is accomplished by providing real-world laboratory and clinical
experiences, professionally relevant resources, and highly qualified faculty. Our success
is evident and transparent as our graduates routinely exceed the national average pass
rate on standardized certification exams.
MISSION
The mission of the College of Health Science, through a career focus, is to support the
individuals and initiatives of Baker College healthcare programs with the common goal to
develop quality, professional, and compassionate graduates.
VISION
The College of Health Science aspires to:
1. Strive for excellence in the scientific, professional and humanistic aspects of each
chosen profession.
2. Practice in a manner consistent with accepted, evidence-based guidelines, centered
on quality, client and community relationships.
3. Modify practices and educational outcomes in response to changing trends in health
professions.

5. Support the mission of Baker College through interaction with the greater community.

ACADEMIC ADVISING
Health Science students may receive advising from OneStop. Once accepted, students
may receive guidance from a program official. Any students with program specific
questions are encouraged to seek out a program official.
CLASS SCHEDULES
The College reserves the right to change course schedules and/or cancel courses. Should
it be necessary to change schedules, students will be notified via Baker email, mail or
telephone. Students should check the Baker College Student Handbook on policies related
to inclement weather. Additional information will be provided by the campus program
official as necessary.
ATTENDANCE
Professional programs at Baker College are demanding and require students to be
focused and committed. Important material is gleaned from each academic experience;
therefore, regular attendance is crucial to student success. Students are expected to
attend and be responsible for content presented in didactic, laboratory, and work
experiences. Many hours of self-directed study and preparation are required each week.
Students are expected to be on time. Tardiness is considered unprofessional behavior.
Students are expected to make the appropriate and necessary arrangements in their
work schedule and personal life as needed to meet the program requirements. If an
unavoidable absence due to such events as illness or family emergency occurs, students
must submit appropriate documentation. Reference the Baker College Student
Handbook Attendance Policy for more information.
Attendance at Work Experiences, Clinical Internships, or Fieldwork Experiences
Work experiences are based on site availability and determined by the College. If the
student does not accept the work experience assigned to them, the College is not
obligated to seek an alternative site. Work experiences may require attendance up to 40
hours per week. Inability to perform at a full-time status may prevent the student from
obtaining work experience placement. In the event the student is offered employment
while participating in the work experience, a program official must be notified. Hours
worked as a paid employee cannot be applied to work experience hours.
Students will abide by the following guidelines:
⮚ Students will attend all scheduled sessions during the semester and will report all
absences or tardiness to the work experience site and program official prior to
scheduled start time. Students will not leave the work experience setting during their
assigned hours unless they have followed appropriate work experience and program

policy. Additional documentation may be required per program policy. Excessive
absences, tardiness, or unauthorized schedule changes may be grounds for
withdrawal from the work experience.
⮚ Students will not arrange clinical site placement unless instructed to do so by program
officials.
⮚ Students will accommodate didactic and work experience schedules that may follow a
non-traditional format. This may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
⮚ Students will arrive at the work experience setting at least 15 minutes before their
scheduled time.
⮚ In the event Baker College closes (power outage, weather, etc.), students will report to
their work experience unless travel conditions are unsafe. If travel conditions are
unsafe, the student must inform the program official and work experience supervisor
of the circumstances that prevented attendance. Reference the Baker College Student
Handbook Inclement Weather Procedures for more information.
⮚ Any change in a student’s schedule must be approved by a program official and work
experience supervisor. The student is responsible to notify a program official promptly
of any such change.
⮚ Students must request time off for personal days, vacation, or interviews. These events
must be previously approved by a program official and work experience supervisor.
LEAVE OF ABSENCE
All time missed shall be made up under guidelines set by both the program and clinical
site.
Military Leave - Students are allowed to make up any missed time due to military duties.
Bereavement - Students who are absent from a clinical internship as a result of the death
of a member of the immediate family will, upon notification and approval of the clinical
instructor, will be entitled to release time not to exceed three (3) regularly scheduled days
of clinical. Hours and/or competencies missed will be completed at a later date. Immediate
family is herein defined as follows:

⮚ Child ⮚ Grandparent
⮚ Parent ⮚ Grandchild
Upon authorization from program officials and/or clinical instructor, bereavement leave
may be granted for deceased persons not listed above.
OUTSIDE OBLIGATIONS
Completion of program requirements is demanding and it is recommended students limit
outside employment and other obligations Conflicts with other obligations are not

considered sufficient reason for changes in course schedules, academic, or clinical
assignments.
PREGNANCY
Should any student suspect pregnancy, they are encouraged to report it immediately to a
program official. This is voluntary on the part of the student. However, failure on the part
of the student to notify a program official, in writing, of an existing pregnancy, shall absolve
both the College and the clinical education center of any responsibility from an assignment
to a potentially hazardous environment.
PROFESSIONALISM
Students will abide by the ethics and standards within their chosen career field throughout
the program. This includes personal conduct, professional attitude, appropriate dress, and
the confidentiality of student, client, and patient information. Any breach of these standards
may result in dismissal from the program.
PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT
Students will adhere to the code of conduct/ethics outlined by the professional standards
for each program. Students will address their instructors (didactic and clinical) using
honorifics such as Dr., Mr., Mrs., Ms. or Miss at all times while in the program, unless
otherwise instructed. See Baker College Students Handbook for additional professional
conduct policies.
HEALTH INSURANCE PORTABILITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY ACT (HIPAA)
HIPAA training will be provided to all undergraduate students in HSC 1010. Individual
clinical agencies may also require students to participate and complete HIPAA training as
it relates to that facility. Violation of HIPAA policies may result in expulsion from Baker
College and/or civil or legal actions against the student.
CONFIDENTIALITY
The principle of confidentiality is one of the central, ethical responsibilities of all health
professionals and will apply in all circumstances. Confidentiality regarding HIV/HBV
status of students, faculty and staff shall be strictly maintained pursuant to federal and
state laws. Confidentiality regarding patient care and information must be strictly upheld.
Individual clinical sites may require students and faculty sign confidentiality statements.
Breach of confidentiality policies may result in student failure of the clinical experience,
failure of the course or expulsion from Baker College.

SOCIAL MEDIA
Students will abstain from using personal cell phones, electronic devices and computers
to take photographs or access social media while in a clinical or laboratory setting. The
use of cell phones in the work experience setting may be prohibited by program officials
and work experience site policies. Unauthorized use may result in dismissal from the work
experience. Students must adhere to the Baker College social networking policy as stated
in the Baker College Student Handbook.
ETHICAL CARE RESPONSIBILITIES
Students will provide quality and dignified health care to every patient regardless of their
social status, race, ethnic background, or diagnosis. Students will apply legal and ethical
principles to the caring practice of their chosen field in a culturally diverse society. Client
confidentiality is an essential element of ethical care.
APPEARANCE
Professional appearance may require a specified uniform. Student appearance should
not be visually distracting or disruptive to the educational or clinical practice experience.
⮚ Students will refrain from wearing low-cut tops and clothing that reveals trunk skin or
under clothing when standing or sitting.
⮚ Closed-toe shoes are required for laboratory and clinical settings.
⮚ Hair, sideburns, facial hair, and nails are to be neat, clean, and trimmed to a length
that will not interfere with safety and performance of skills.
⮚ Attempts will be made to cover visible tattoos.
⮚ Facial piercing jewelry may not be allowed in laboratory and clinical settings.
⮚ Students will limit or avoid the use of perfumes, colognes, lotions or other products
due to sensitivities and possible triggering of respiratory reactions. Students will not
smell of smoke.
⮚ Students will practice proper personal hygiene.
⮚ Students will wear a form of identification at all times within the clinical environment.
If students do not meet the appearance expectations, they may be sent home at the
discretion of the work experience supervisor or the program official. Students sent home
due to inappropriate appearance are responsible to make up the time missed. See
program specific information for more detailed requirements.
SMOKING
Tobacco and smoking-related products are defined as any type of tobacco product or
product intended to mimic tobacco products or the smoking or vaping of any other
substances. This includes but is not limited to cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, smokeless
tobacco, electronic cigarettes, pipes, bidis, and hookahs.

⮚ Students will abide by the Baker College Smoking Policy. Reference the Baker
College Student Handbook Smoking Policy for more information.
⮚ Work experience sites may have additional guidelines the student must adhere to
during the work experience.
⮚ If students smell like smoke, they may be dismissed from the work experience for the
day and will be required to make up the absence.
EMAIL COMMUNICATIONS
Faculty and staff at Baker College will only accept and respond to email communications
generated from a Baker College email. Students will have a Baker College Email Account
and are responsible for checking on a daily basis for important communications, updates,
and course changes.
CRIMINAL HISTORY AND BACKGROUND REQUIREMENTS
A criminal background check may be required prior to entering the professional track
and/or work experience portion of the program. A report from state, federal, and sexual
offender databases may be required by clinical sites. Students having certain felony
convictions or misdemeanors are not allowed in the clinical settings by law; therefore,
students will not be allowed to enter the clinical environment. Credentialing bodies may
prohibit individuals with certain criminal histories from taking a licensure exam. Students
are urged to research their ability to become licensed in their chosen profession prior to
applying to the program.
IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS
Students may be required to provide proof of immunizations, boosters and/or titers,
current TB test results, and other screenings pertinent to their chosen profession.
Immunization requirements must align with specific clinical / work experience site policies.
Students are financially responsible for all immunizations, tests, and titers needed for
program requirements.
⮚ Baker College Health Information Form includes emergency contact information and
affirmation that the student’s immunizations are complete.
⮚ Tuberculosis Testing: T.B. skin test, serological test, or chest x-ray results must be
submitted on an annual basis. Students will not have active or communicable
tuberculosis. (documented 2-step once and then standard TB test annually as
applicable to the individual student)
⮚ Varicella-Zoster Testing: Provide documentation to verify immune status via serologic
testing or documentation of immunization.
⮚ Measles, Mumps and Rubella Immunization: Students born after December 3, 1956
will submit a valid immunization record documenting administration of this required
immunization (MMR) and/or verification of immune status for measles and rubella via
serologic testing. Boosters and/or titers may be required.

⮚ Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis Immunization: Students will submit a valid immunization
record documenting a primary series and booster dose (Tdap) within the previous ten
(10) years.
⮚ Hepatitis B Immunization Series: Students will submit documentation of having
received or in the process of receiving the Hepatitis B immunization series. A lack of
the Hepatitis B series may prevent students from access to some clinical site
placement.
⮚ Influenza Vaccine: Most clinical locations require students to obtain an annual flu
vaccine. This requirement will be enforced to enable students at Baker College to be
placed in clinical rotations. Failure to meet this requirement may result in loss of clinical
placement and failure to meet course objectives.
⮚ Some clinical agencies may have additional health requirements for students other
than those listed in this handbook. Students will be notified of those facilities requiring
additional immunization/vaccines prior to the practicum start date.
Immunization Exemption
If certain immunizations conflict with the religious beliefs of students or are medically
contraindicated, students should submit a statement of the same to the campus Program
Director. Students should also submit a valid immunization record of other administered
immunizations.
Clinical affiliates may refuse students who do not have all current immunizations. This
may affect clinical assignments and could result in the inability to complete the program.
HEALTH INSURANCE
Students enrolled in the College of Health Science must have health insurance during the
time in which they are in any clinical/work/fieldwork experiences. Students are responsible
for all associated costs for health insurance. Please go to: https://www.healthcare.gov/
for more information on securing health insurance.
BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS) CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Students may be required to obtain and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare
Providers certification from the American Heart Association. Students may be required to
provide their clinical facility with a current BLS certificate when requested.
PROFESSIONAL LIABILITY
Professional liability insurance covering students during the Baker College academic
related clinical experiences will be provided by the College. This does not prevent
students from obtaining their own professional liability insurance if they choose to do so.
Students are responsible for all costs associated with background, drug screens,
immunizations, health insurance, BLS certification, and all other items or services
required by the work experience site.

TRANSPORTATION
Work experiences occur at a variety of health care facilities that may be an extended
distance from home or campus. Some clinical sites may be further than 100 miles away.
Relocation may be necessary. Reliable transportation is necessary to assure prompt
arrival and attendance. Students will have a backup solution planned in advance in the
event their primary mode of transportation fails. If an overnight stay is required for a work
experience, the cost will be at the student’s expense.
BLOOD BORNE PATHOGENS (BBP)
BBP Training will be given to each student based on program requirements.
Reinforcement of the BBP training will be incorporated into lab and other selected
courses. All students, faculty, and staff have the responsibility to maintain and share the
current knowledge regarding these guidelines. See program specific information for
procedure to complete this requirement.
LATEX ALLERGIES
The goal of the College of Health Science is to provide a latex safe environment for
workers and students. However, because latex can be found in a variety of products
(erasers, wallpaper, paint, computer terminals, etc.), it is impossible to ensure a latex free
environment. Students with a history of latex allergies or students with a history of allergic
reactions should notify their instructors in laboratory courses where latex exposure may
occur. If students suspect that they are experiencing a latex allergy while attending Baker
College, they should notify the instructor as well as their Program Director. Students with
latex allergies should consult with their personal health care provider regarding the impact
of this allergy on health careers and treatment options.

Baker College will make all reasonable accommodations to provide latex free products
for students who request them.
AFFECTIVE, COGNITIVE, and PSYCHOMOTOR DOMAIN REQUIREMENTS
The curricula leading to a degree from the College of Health Science requires students to
engage in diverse and complex experiences directed at the acquisition and practice of
essential knowledge, skills, and functions. Combinations of cognitive, affective,
psychomotor, physical and social abilities are required to acquire the knowledge and skills
needed to perform the varied roles in healthcare. In addition to being essential to the
successful completion of the requirements of a degree, these skills and functions are
necessary to ensure the health and safety of patients, fellow students, faculty and other
health care providers.
The following motor, sensory, communication, and intellectual requirements comprise the
attributes a student must possess to meet program outcomes. See program specific
information for more detailed requirements.
Affective Domain
⮚ The student must be capable of responsive and empathetic listening to establish
rapport in a way that promotes openness on issues of concern and sensitivity to
potential cultural differences.
⮚ Emotional stability to function effectively under stress and to adapt to an environment
that may change rapidly without warning and/or in unpredictable ways.
⮚ Capacity to demonstrate ethical behavior, including adherence to the code of conduct
of the student’s profession, as well as applicable laws and regulations governing the
healthcare profession.
Cognitive Domain
⮚ Cognitive abilities necessary to master relevant content in courses at a level deemed
appropriate by the College. These skills may be described as the ability to
comprehend, memorize, analyze, and synthesize material in a timely manner.
⮚ Ability to think critically, prioritize, organize, utilize time management and demonstrate
problem-solving skills.
Psychomotor Domain
⮚ Ability to recognize one's own limits, both personally and professionally, as related to
one's skill and knowledge.
⮚ Capacity for the development of a mature, compassionate, respectful, sensitive and
effective therapeutic relationship with patients and their families, including sufficient
emotional and intellectual capacity to exercise good judgment and complete patient
care responsibilities promptly and professionally.

Communication
⮚ Ability to effectively communicate in English through speech, hearing, reading, writing,
and computer literacy using accurate and appropriate terminology with classmates,
faculty, patients, their families, members of the healthcare team and individuals of all
ages, races, genders, socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
⮚ Students with hearing or speech disabilities will be given full consideration. In such
cases, use of a trained intermediary or other communication aids may be appropriate
if the intermediary functions only as an information conduit and does not serve
integrative or interpretive functions.
These technical standards reflect performance abilities and characteristics that are
necessary to successfully complete the requirements of the program at Baker College.
These standards are not conditions of admission to the program. Persons interested in
applying for admission to the program should review this information to develop a better
understanding of the physical abilities and behavioral characteristics necessary to
successfully complete the program. The College complies with the requirements and spirit
of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
Therefore, the College will endeavor to make reasonable accommodations for
participants with disabilities who are otherwise qualified.
Students seeking disability accommodations should contact the College Campus
Department of Disability Services. The Department of Disability Services will determine a
student’s eligibility for accommodations and will recommend appropriate
accommodations and services.
LIMITED ENROLLMENT APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCESS
Full acceptance into the professional track of some programs is limited due to clinical or
work site availability. Students compete to earn acceptance into these programs. All
students having successfully completed the conditional acceptance requirements are
eligible to apply. Admittance criteria for all limited enrollment health science programs
feature a common set of prerequisite courses prior to acceptance to their selected
program. Students have the opportunity to apply to multiple limited enrollment programs
due to the common set of required courses used for the selection process.

The Veterinary Technology program will register for an alternate Anatomy and
Physiology course sequence. Student selection is based on the following criteria.

⮚ Must be satisfactorily completed with a grade of a C (2.0) or better
⮚ HSC 1010 must be completed with a grade of a B- (2.7) or better

Criterion II
Entrance Exam Score: Limited Enrollment programs require applicants to take an
assessment test chosen by the. Students are allowed to test one time per application
period. Admission points will be added based on the highest score attained. Exam results
are valid for 1 year.
Should two or more students obtain the same points during the selection process and are
competing for the last available open seat in the program, students will be selected based
on the highest overall GPA.
Reapplication after Non-Acceptance
Students reapplying to a program will complete the program application process
including submitting a new application.
Reentry after Voluntary Withdrawal
Students previously awarded a seat in a Limited Enrollment program but voluntarily
withdrew due to non-academic reasons, will provide verifiable documentation of mitigating
circumstances to be eligible for reentry to the program. Voluntary withdrawal for non-
academic reasons will only be approved one time. The Program Director and the Dean
must approve program withdrawals to be eligible for reentry. Students may be required to
audit previously completed core/major courses in sequence with a cohort. Students are
responsible for any associated cost.
ACADEMIC CORRECTIVE ACTION PROCESS
Students who demonstrate unsatisfactory achievement of didactic or clinical performance
levels and skills necessary to meet program outcomes will enter the academic corrective
action process. This is a graduated process.

1. Documented Verbal Warning: A meeting with program officials. This meeting will detail
the academic issue and review expectations. If satisfactory progress is not attained
after the specified timeframe, students enter Program Academic Probation status.
2. Program Academic Probation / Written Warning: A meeting with program officials and
the Director of Student Affairs and/or the Dean. This meeting will detail the
consequences of failure to make measurable progress or an occurrence of a new or
additional concern. A Learning Contract will be created which details the expectations,
the method used to evaluate the student’s progress, and the timeframe for
reevaluation. In the event students have not made significant progress or if an
additional academic or performance issue is identified, students will undergo a
Sanctions Review by an academic committee.
3. Sanctions Review: A formal meeting with program officials, the Director of Student
Affairs and/or the Dean will be conducted. This meeting will detail the failure to
progress and result in a decision by the Sanctions Review Committee. Where program
dismissal is the resulting sanction, the decision is final and not eligible for appeal.
PROFESSIONALISM
Students in the College of Health Science are subject to the Baker College Code of
Conduct. Additionally, students will adhere to the code of ethics of their profession. In the
event students do not meet expectations, the College of Health Science provides the
following policy:
When reports of violations are received, students will be notified and will be required to
attend a meeting with the Program Director to discuss the violation. The Program Director,
in consultation with other faculty or College administrators when appropriate, will
determine specific sanctions to be imposed. In addition to the sanctions listed in the Code
of Conduct, program-specific sanctions may be imposed up to and including suspension
of clinical responsibility or expulsion from Baker College. In cases of recommended
expulsion, the program official will consult with the Campus President and the Dean.
Where expulsion is the resulting sanction the decision is final and not eligible for appeal.
REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATION
Students will pass all professional track courses with the minimum grade requirement to
graduate with an undergraduate from Baker College. A minimum grade of B- (2.7) is
required for prerequisite Health Science Courses (BIO, HSC). A minimum grade of C (2.0)
is required for general education courses. Review program specific information for
minimum grade requirements of individual programs.

DENTAL HYGIENE PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Dental hygienists are licensed oral health professionals who focus on the prevention and
treatment of oral diseases of the teeth and gums, and protection of patients' total health.
As part of dental hygiene services, dental hygienists perform comprehensive oral
healthcare assessments. Additionally, dental hygienists take and interpret dental
radiographs; remove plaque and calculus from the teeth; apply cavity prevention agents;
apply sealants; teach patients proper oral hygiene techniques; counsel patients on good
nutrition; provide local anesthesia and nitrous oxide for pain and/or anxiety control. Dental
hygienists can work as clinicians, educators, researchers, administrators, managers,
consumer advocates, sales managers and consultants. They may work in a variety of
healthcare settings such as private dental offices, schools, public health clinics, hospitals,
correctional institutions, or nursing homes.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES/PHILOSOPHY
The Dental Hygiene Program at Baker College of Clinton Township, part of the College of
Health Science, provides an education based in the social, behavioral, and biological
sciences. The goal of the academic divisions is to support and carry out the institution’s
mission. This goal is accomplished by developing and delivering curriculum and fulfilling
the three components of instruction, learning, and assessment. Emphasis is on advising,
curriculum delivery, faculty and staff training, and outcomes.
The major emphasis of dental hygiene education is a preventive approach to dental
disease. Committed faculty members, excellent clinical facilities and adherence to the
goals and objectives set forth for the students facilitate positive direction in both the
attainment of knowledge and the development of responsible and competent dental
hygienists. Baker College of Clinton Township Dental Hygiene faculty members recognize
the need for continued review of the curriculum as new knowledge and technology
emerges.
CODE OF ETHICS
The Dental Hygiene Program prides itself on establishing high standards of professional
behavior. The conduct of each student reflects upon the entire profession of dental
hygiene, the patients served in the clinic, and the individuals around them. Therefore, a
strong obligation exists on the part of the student in regard to appropriate conduct and
representation befitting of a Baker College of Clinton Township dental hygiene student.
This policy will be enforced by the Program Director and all dental hygiene faculty
members, as well as campus and system administrators.
SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
Entrance into the Dental Building
➢ Follow posted Baker College protocols.
➢ Doors will remain locked at all times and anyone entering will be required to contact
Campus Safety.
➢ Everyone cleared to enter (students, staff and patients) will be required to:

o Have their temperature taken and complete the Baker College Self-Certification Form (Students and Faculty) or Patient Screening Form (DHY patients). o Individuals who are ill and/or have a temperature of 100.4 or higher will be dismissed for the day. o All individuals will be required to wear a mask.
Radiography Rules and Guidelines
These rules are to provide the best diagnostic images while minimizing patient exposure
to ionizing radiation.
⮚ No individuals, including students, will be exposed to radiation for teaching purposes.
Therefore, patients will not be subjected to radiographic retakes solely for the students
to demonstrate technical competency.
⮚ No radiographs will be taken on a routine basis (time lapse). There must be an
expected diagnostic advantage to the individual.
⮚ Authorization for radiographs is given by the supervising dentist or the patient’s dentist
of record following a comprehensive dental and medical history.
⮚ If radiographs are recent and available, they will be evaluated prior to taking new
radiographs.
⮚ It is up to the discretion of the supervising dentist whether to prescribe radiographs on
clinic patients.
⮚ Retakes: All retakes must be directly supervised by a faculty member.
⮚ The radiographic facility is constructed with lead-lined walls to restrict radiation
exposure to individuals nearby and in the clinic areas.
⮚ Dental hygiene students and faculty can make an exposure once properly positioned
behind the lead-lined wall.
⮚ All patients will be required to wear a lead apron and a thyroid collar.
⮚ A radiography logbook, located in the radiographic area, is maintained and monitored
by the radiography instructor/faculty. Included will be the date, student’s name,
patient’s name, the number and type of images, also indicating if an image was a
retake.
⮚ All students and faculty follow appropriate image processing techniques and factors
necessary for proper viewing.
⮚ All students and faculty respond to patient concerns about safety with factual
knowledge, scientific data, and utilization of critical thinking skills.
⮚ Infection control procedures are extremely important when taking radiographs. All
infection control protocol must be strictly adhered to.
⮚ All radiographic equipment is certified by the State Department of Radiological Health
and is in compliance with the appropriate state codes.

Policy - Pregnancy Students
Radiation has long been recognized as potentially fetotoxic, as well as several other dental
product fumes. Therefore, certain precautionary measures must be taken for dental
hygiene students. The National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements
recommends that the maximum per dose (MPD) equivalent to the embryo-fetus from
occupational exposure to the expectant mother be limited to 0.5 REM for the entire
gestational period. Through proper instruction of all safety precautions, personal
monitoring and strict adherence to these precautions, it is possible to prevent fetal MPD
levels from being surpassed. The radiography portion of the dental hygiene program
begins in the fall semester of the first year with a limited amount of exposures and
continues into the second year. A student will not have course objectives and/or course
criteria waived. However, an incomplete grade "I" may be given in certain courses if
deemed necessary by the program faculty. Due to the importance of maintaining the
prescribed rotation schedule for the program, the following policies have been set forth.
Should any student suspect pregnancy, the student will:
⮚ Notify the Baker College of Clinton Township Dental Hygiene Program Director
immediately.
⮚ Within two weeks, submit a statement from her physician verifying pregnancy and
expected due date. The statement must include a physician's recommendation of the
following options:
□ Immediate resignation from the program with the knowledge that re-admittance
at a future date (if student is a member of the class of 2022) is not possible due
to closure of the program in 2022.
□ Continued full-time status, stating any physical limitations/restrictions.
⮚ Within 2 days (48 hours), submit her decision in writing whether or not she will remain
in the program. (If resignation is the choice, no other action is indicated.) The
appropriate Pregnancy Policy Form must then be signed by the student immediately if
her choice is to continue in the program.
The pregnant student will be required to abide by all of the following:
⮚ STRICT adherence to ALL safety precautions for protection purposes. These include:
□ The standing of the student behind the lead walls with the exposure room door
closed when any exposure is made.
□ The use of the operator lead apron when in the radiographic area and when
exposing radiographs.
□ The completion of all Radiography requirements as stated in the dental hygiene
student handbook.

□ The reporting of any condition to the Program Director the student feels is
detrimental to herself or to her fetus.
⮚ Notification to the Dental Hygiene Program Director of any changes or problems in her
pregnancy.

responsible for the health of the student and/or fetus.

SIGN-OFF SHEET FOR PREGNANT STUDENTS
Radiation has long been recognized as potentially fetotoxic. Therefore, certain
precautionary measures must be taken immediately when it is known that a dental hygiene
student is pregnant. Neither Baker College of Clinton Township nor their personnel shall
be responsible for the health or medical consequences of the student and/or fetus. It is the
responsibility of the Dental Hygiene Program Director to implement the procedures
outlined in the Pregnancy Policy.
The following conditions for completing the radiographic requirements for the Dental
Hygiene Program must be adhered to:
⮚ The student must stand behind the lead walls with the exposure room door closed
when an exposure is made.
⮚ The student must wear the operator lead apron when in the radiographic area and
exposing radiographs.
⮚ At no time and for no reason will the pregnant student place herself in the primary beam
of radiation.
⮚ The student must complete all Dental Hygiene Program Radiography requirements as
stated in the Student Handbook.
⮚ It is the responsibility of the student to follow the above procedures. The Dental
Hygiene Clinical instructors will monitor the compliance of the above requirements and

Basic Life Support Training Policy for Students, Faculty And Staff
The Dental Hygiene Program understands that emergencies may occur in the dental hygiene clinic. A critical
component in preparedness for emergencies is training in basic life support. It is the policy of the Dental
Hygiene Program that students, faculty, and staff who participate in the dental hygiene clinic on a regular
basis MUST maintain current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
The goal of this program is to ensure that all faculty, staff and student training meets the level of “Basic Life
Support for the Professional Rescuer” (American Red Cross), or “Basic Life Support for the Health Care
Provider” (American Heart Association). Training should include the use of a facemask, one- and two-
person, child, infant and adult CPR.
An exemption will be made for those who may not participate in training or deliverance of CPR for
documented medical reasons. Records of certification status will be maintained by the Clinical Coordinator
of the Dental Hygiene Program.
Policy on Bloodborne Infectious Diseases
All pre-dental hygiene students, students in the program, faculty, staff and patients who present with a
medical history positive for bloodborne infectious diseases will be serviced following all the guidelines of the
Americans with Disabilities Act. All Occupational Safety and Hazard Association (OSHA) guidelines, as well
as state requirements, will be strictly adhered to and standard precautions followed on every patient.
VACCINATION WAIVER FORM
Student Vaccination Policy Statement on required vaccinations for participation in the Dental Hygiene
professional curriculum:
Dental Hygiene students are required to provide documentation of current Tetanus vaccination, TB tine test
or chest x-ray, and Hepatitis B vaccination prior to beginning the fall curriculum. Students may opt to sign a
Declination form, indicating that they choose not to receive the Hepatitis B vaccination. The Council on
Dental Therapeutics of the American Dental Association recommends the Hepatitis B Vaccine for all
hygienists. The dental hygiene faculty supports this recommendation. Students are advised to contact either
their personal physician or the local County Health Department for vaccinations and testing.
I understand that due to my occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials, I may
be at risk of acquiring hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. I have been informed that it is highly recommended
by the dental hygiene faculty at Baker College of Clinton Township, however I choose to decline its
administration (by an outside agency) at this time. I understand that by declining this vaccine, I continue to
be at risk of acquiring hepatitis B, a serious disease.

Infection Control Guidelines
Specific guidelines exist for healthcare facilities to reduce significant risk of infection of
employees exposed to infectious body fluids or tissue from infected persons or animals.
Dental personnel and patients may be exposed to a wide variety of microorganisms in the
blood and saliva of patients in the dental operatory. Infectious agents may be transmitted
in dental practice by blood or saliva through direct contact, droplet nuclei, or aerosols.
Indirect transmission is also possible by contaminated instruments. Patients and dental
healthcare personnel may be the cause of cross contamination. The following set of
infection control guidelines can be effective for preventing the spread of microorganisms
found in blood and body fluids.
The Bloodborne Pathogens Standard issued by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health
Administration (OSHA), is the latest in a series of health standards. In this state, the
Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Act (MIOSHA) is the authority under which
safety and health regulations are promulgated and enforced. Since Michigan has its own
program, Michigan dental personnel must comply with the MIOSHA counterpart to the
Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, known as the "Michigan Bloodborne Infectious Disease
Rules."
Contained within these guidelines are found mechanisms used to ensure adequate
asepsis; protocols for dealing with potentially hazardous procedures, materials, and
wastes; procedures for monitoring the compliance with these protocols; and a review and
evaluation schedule for evaluating the success of these guidelines.
Exposure Determination
All occupations that require procedures or occupation-related tasks in which employees
have a reasonable anticipated risk of exposure or the potential for exposure to blood or
other potentially infectious material or that involve a potential for spill or splashes of blood
or other potentially infectious material are included in this exposure determination.

WORK PRACTICE CONTROLS
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
The following physical barriers are used in the dental hygiene program to minimize
exposure to potentially infectious organisms.
Patient treatment gloves
⮚ Hands must be washed before gloving and with any change of gloves.
⮚ A new pair of gloves is to be used with each patient. Gloves are not washed or
decontaminated for re-use. They may be rinsed to remove excess powder .
⮚ Gloves must be changed if the condition of the glove is in question (i.e. a tear, a longer
treatment period, or exposure to disinfectant materials).
⮚ Gloves are never worn outside the clinic area; this includes the reception area.
Utility gloves
⮚ Must be worn when cleaning and packaging instruments for sterilization.
⮚ Must be worn when performing disinfection and maintenance procedures between
patients and at the end of the clinic day.
Dress
⮚ Street clothes are to be worn entering and leaving the building.
⮚ Clinic coats and disposable gowns are to be worn in all Clinic sessions. They are part
of the student's PPE.
⮚ Clinic coats must be long-sleeved with elastic cuffs and a high collar.
⮚ Scrubs are to be worn during all patient treatment under the clinic coats. Scrubs will
be placed in a washable bag at the end of the day to be taken home to be laundered.
⮚ All soiled clinic coats must be placed in the designated container adjacent to the
locker room in preparation for transport to the laundry facility.
⮚ Clinic shoes will be kept out of lockers. They will be cleaned 2x with CaviWipes and
stored in the locker room coat area.
⮚ Appropriate training for donning, removal, and disposal of all PPE will be provided.
Eye/Face protection
⮚ A full face shield and a NIOSH-approved KN/N95 mask is mandatory for each student
during clinic or laboratory rotations when providing hygiene care, disinfection
techniques, sterilization procedures, sharpening and/or practicing techniques where
exposure to the eyes and face area are likely. A disposable surgical mask will be worn
over the KN/N95 to prolong its use in accordance with prevailing CDC/OSHA/ADA
guidelines. The surgical mask must be changed after every patient.

⮚ Healthcare workers, including students, who have exudative lesions or weeping
dermatitis on exposed skin, should refrain from all direct patient care and from handling
patient-care equipment until the condition resolves.
⮚ Low and high speed evacuation, proper patient positioning, and the use of a student
partner to assist during air polishing and ultrasonic scaling, is encouraged to minimize
generation of droplets and spatter.
⮚ All instruments and equipment which can withstand autoclaving must be autoclaved
prior to their use
⮚ A pre-packaged disposable air/water syringe tip must be used for each patient.
⮚ The water lines should be flushed before each patient of the day for three minutes.
Thirty seconds is sufficient between patients.
⮚ All surfaces in the dental operatory that may become contaminated must be cleaned
and disinfected using a germicidal product before and after patient treatment.
⮚ Dental equipment and surfaces that are difficult to disinfect and that may become
contaminated must be wrapped with a barrier. These must be replaced for each patient.
⮚ Handwashing facilities are available to the students in each dental operatory, as well
as in central sterilization, at the dispensing area, and in each radiography room.
⮚ Face shields will be decontaminated after each patient treatment and prior to leaving
the work area (Clinic).
WORK AREA RESTRICTIONS AND HOUSEKEEPING
Students are not allowed to eat, drink, apply cosmetics, smoke or handle contact lenses
in the clinic and laboratory areas, including the radiography hallway.
The dental hygiene clinic will be cleaned and disinfected according to the following
schedule:
⮚ Dental units are cleaned and disinfected before and after each patient treatment.
Gloves, mask and eye protection are to be worn during the cleaning process.
⮚ Cleaning and disinfection will be accomplished by utilizing Caviwipes, with the wipe-
wipe technique.
⮚ In the radiography area, the unit activating buttons will be covered with plastic wrap
and changed after each patient. X-ray heads and the patient chair will be covered
with a plastic bag.
⮚ Any broken glassware will not be picked up directly with the hands.
Facilities/maintenance personnel will pick it up with a brush and dustpan (located in
the campus maintenance area) and it will be disposed of in a sharps container.

HAZARD COMMUNICATION PROGRAM
Hazard Determination
⮚ Baker College of Clinton Township Dental Hygiene Clinic will be relying on Safety
Data Sheets from product suppliers and the ADA to meet hazard determination
requirements.
Labeling
⮚ The Clinic Manager will be responsible for seeing that all containers (including portable)
in the clinic are properly labeled. (Note: although the Clinic Manager has the final
responsibility in this matter, this day-to-day task may be delegated to a trained
workstudy student, under the Manager’s direction).
⮚ All in-coming labels will be checked for: identity, hazard warning, name and address of
responsible party.
Safety Data Sheets
⮚ SDS is managed online as opposed to a binder with safety sheets. Even though the
main repository is online, the sheets are printed by the Clinic Manager and placed in a
binder in both the Clinic and Lab.
⮚ All SDSs will be available for review by all employees and students.
LABORATORY SAFETY RULES
These rules will be enforced by the laboratory instructors. The rules are for the safety and
follow-up care of all individuals.

These technical standards reflect performance abilities and characteristics that are
necessary to successfully complete the requirements of the program at Baker College.
These standards are not conditions of admission to the program. Persons interested in
applying for admission to the program should review this information to develop a better
understanding of the physical abilities and behavioral characteristics necessary to
successfully complete the program. The College complies with the requirements and

SUPERVISION REQUIREMENTS
All procedures are performed under the direct supervision of licensed dentists and licensed

LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
In order to become a Licensed Registered Dental Hygienist (R.D.H.) in the state of
Michigan, students must pass the following examinations:
⮚ National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE): A direct assessment measuring
the students’ success on the national board examination, which reflects knowledge
obtained in the classroom.
⮚ Commission on Dental Competency Assessments (CDCA) res: A direct measure of
the students’ ability to assess and treat patients in a clinical setting.
⮚ Computer Simulated Clinical Examination (CSCE: A direct measure of the students’
knowledge of clinical information.
⮚ CDCA Local Anesthesia Certification Examination: A direct measure of students’
knowledge in the area of dental pain and anxiety control, including the administration
of local anesthesia.
⮚ CDCA Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen Sedation Certification Examination: A direct measure of

COMPETENCIES
Purpose
Competencies for the Dental Hygienist identifies and organizes the knowledge and skills
the graduate must have acquired to become a competent practitioner in the delivery of
dental hygiene services in public and practice settings. These competencies serve to
document the graduate’s knowledge and skills after completing the dental hygiene
program. This document illustrates the individual measurable competencies that a student
must demonstrate to qualify for graduation and entry into the profession.
The term “competent” is described as the repeated demonstration of the student’s
independent performance of a skill to a defined standard as measured against relevant,
valid and reliable criteria.

Organization
This document is organized around three domains: Professionalism, Wellness and Patient
Care. These represent broad categories of the dental hygiene care process. Within each
domain, “Major Competencies” are included. A major competency is defined as the ability
to perform or provide a particular complex service or task. The complexity of the service
suggests that multiple and more specific abilities are required to support the performance
of any major competency. The term “Supporting Competency” is a subdivision of the
“Major Competency” and requires a level of mastery that is less complex than a major
competency, however requires foundational knowledge to achieve. “Foundational
Knowledge” is the result of classroom and laboratory instruction that provides information
and experience that is necessary to accomplish the supporting competencies.
Summary
These Competencies for the Dental Hygienist serve to clearly define the content of the
curriculum, and provide guidance in making decisions regarding course instruction,
sequencing and content. It is recognized that this document is dynamic and must be
periodically reviewed for continued program improvement in the ever-changing
environment of dental hygiene.

The dental hygiene graduate must be able to discern and manage ethical issues of dental
hygiene practice in a rapidly changing environment. Specifically, the dental hygiene
graduate must:

WELLNESS
Changes within the healthcare environment require the dental hygienist to have a

Health Promotion
The dental hygienist plays a major role in the promotion of oral health and its relationship
to general, overall health. Therefore, the dental hygienist must be able to provide
planned educational services using interpersonal communication skills and educational
strategies to promote optimal health. Specifically, the dental hygiene graduate must:
⮚ Encourage patients to assume responsibility for their own health.
⮚ Identify the oral health needs of individuals and assist them in the development of
individual self-care regimens.
Disease Prevention
The prevention of disease involves steps in a preventative program, regardless of
whether it is individually or community based. The dental hygienist must be able to
formulate a treatment plan that involves these steps. Education is ongoing during all
phases of interaction. Preventative services are achieved and re-evaluation is done to
assess further corrective action. Specifically, the dental hygiene graduate must:
⮚ Educate patients concerning their risk factors and assist in self-care regimens.
⮚ Identify individual and population risk factors and develop strategies that promote
health.
⮚ Evaluate the outcomes of dental hygiene care and determine an individualized
maintenance schedule or additional treatment needs such as the referral to the
appropriate health care professional.

Community Involvement
The dental hygienist serves the community in both practice and public health settings.
Community involvement is an important component of the interdisciplinary approach
provided by a dental hygienist. The dental hygienist must be able to initiate and assume
responsibility for community involvement for diverse populations. Specifically, the dental
hygiene graduate must:
⮚ Apply the dental care process (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation)
to communities through oral health education.
⮚ Provide dental hygiene services/education in a variety of settings.
Patient Care
The dental hygienist is a licensed preventative oral health professional who provides
educational and clinical services to assist in achieving optimal oral health. The dental
hygiene process of care includes principles from the biomedical, clinical and social
sciences applicable to a variety of populations. These may include the medically
compromised, mentally or physically challenged, or socially or culturally disadvantaged.
Assessment
The dental hygiene graduate must be able to systematically collect, analyze and
accurately record data on the general, oral and psychosocial health status using
methods consistent with medico-legal principles. Specifically, the dental hygiene
graduate must:
⮚ Obtain, review and update a complete patient history, including medical, dental,
familial, social, and nutritional information.
⮚ Recognize medical conditions and medications that require special precautions or
consideration prior to, during, or after treatment.
⮚ Identify patients at risk for a medical emergency and be prepared to prevent and/or
manage that emergency.
⮚ Perform an extraoral and intraoral soft tissue examination and accurately record the
findings.
⮚ Perform a hard tissue examination and accurately record the findings.
⮚ Perform a periodontal evaluation and accurately record the findings.
⮚ Assess the need for radiographs and distinguish normal from abnormal findings.

Dental Hygiene Diagnosis
The dental hygienist must be able to determine a differential diagnosis, based on the
assessment data available that is consistent with the dentist and other health
professionals. Specifically, the dental hygiene graduate must:
⮚ Analyze and interpret assessment findings, etiologic factors, and clinical data.
⮚ Differentiate between health and disease.
Planning
The dental hygienist must be able to plan the dental hygiene care in an appropriate
sequence according to assessment and diagnostic findings, and recommend
alternative treatment plans when appropriate to meet the needs of the patient.
Specifically, the dental hygiene graduate must:
⮚ Determine priorities and establish health care goals with the patient, family, and/or
guardian as an active participant.
⮚ Plan treatment that reflects the impact of behavioral, social and nutritional factors.
⮚ Establish a planned sequence of care based on the dental hygiene diagnosis.
⮚ Communicate the dental hygiene care plan to the dentist, patient, and other health care

The dental hygienist must be able to provide treatment that includes preventative and

⮚ Determine the patients’ satisfaction with the health care provided.
⮚ Determine an individualized supportive maintenance program for the patient.
Documentation
The dental hygienist must be able to completely and accurately record all collected data
related to patient care. Specifically, the dental hygiene graduate must:
⮚ Record all aspects of the dental hygiene process of care, including assessment, dental
hygiene diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
⮚ Document oral and written recommendations, referrals, prescriptions, patient
comments/ concerns, treatment outcomes and other interactions between the patient
and the clinic, including failure of patient to follow through with recommendations.
