a Note that the same three names (Queen Charlotte Lowland, Skidegate Plateau, and Queen Charlotte Ranges) were used by Holland (1976) to name the physiographic regions of Haida Gwaii with somewhat different boundaries from those shown in Figure 4.1. Throughout this field guide, we use these three names to refer to Holland’s physiographic regions, rather than ecosections.

APPENDIX 4 Definitions of terms used in keys to relative soil moisture regime (Appendix 5) and soil nutrient regime (Appendix 6)
The keys in Appendices 5 and 6 are designed to assist users in identifying rela-tive soil moisture regime and soil nutrient regime using environmental features described during site assessment. Always check the results against other site and vegetation information.
Term Definition
Ridge crest Height of land; usually convex slope shape (soil water shedding).
Upper slope The generally convex-shaped, upper portion of a slope (soil water mostly shedding).
Middle slope The portion of a slope between the upper and lower slopes; the slope shape is usually straight (soil water shedding/receiving relatively equally).
Lower slope The moisture-receiving area towards the base of a slope; the slope shape is usually concave (soil water receiving).
Toe slope Areas directly below the lower slope, transitioning to the level area or depression at the base of the slope.
Flats Any level area (excludes slopes); the surface shape is generally straight with no distinct aspect and minimal slope (< 5%).
Depression Concave-shaped area, usually in flat or subdued topography or at the base of a slope.
Floodplain Post-glacial alluvial deposits bordering rivers and streams; still under the influence of periodic flooding and subirrigation.
Soil depth Depth from the ground surface to a restricting layer such as bedrock, strongly compacted, or strongly cemented material. Measured from the surface of the Organic (LFH) horizons, not from the interface of organic and mineral horizons.
Soil particle size Sandy (LS, S) with >35% volume of coarse fragments; coarse or loamy (SL, L, SCL) with >70% volume of coarse fragments.
Soil particle size Silty (SiL, Si) or clayey (SiCL, CL, SC, SiC, C) (all <65% sand) fine with low volume of coarse fragments (<20% by volume).
Soil colluvial Soils derived from colluvial parent materials; that is, products of mass-wasting not carried by wind, water, or ice. Examples would be creep, solifluction, earth flows, rockslides, avalanches, and landslides.
Haida Gwaii Field Guide 23
Alluvium Post-glacial, active floodplain deposits along rivers and streams as well as fans; usually a series of low benches and channels.
Gleyed Soil horizon characterized by grey colours or prominent mot-tling or both; indicates poor drainage and permanent (if dull coloured) or periodic (if mottles present) saturation by ground-water.
Mottles Pattern of red/yellow/orange patches in gleyed soils due to oxidization of iron in the soil when soil is exposed (indicative of periodic rather than permanent saturation).
Wet soil Soil with water table (or permanent seepage) less than 30 cm from the ground surface during the growing season.
Organic LFH Includes upland folic material derived primarily from leaves, horizons twigs, and woody materials; found at/above the surface of min-
eral soils.
Peat (organic “O”) Includes materials derived primarily from mosses (dominantlyhorizons peat-mosses), rushes, and woody materials accumulated in
wetland environments.
Organic material Organic material readily identifiable as to origin. poorly decomposed
Organic materials Organic material that for the most part has been transformed well decomposed into amorphic humic materials.
Mor, Moder, and See Appendix 3 for definitions of humus forms.Mull
Forest floor All organic materials (L, F, and H horizons) on the mineral soil surface.
Active seepage Seepage water moving across or downslope as opposed to stag-nant water table (latter often associated with gentle slopes and flats).

Table A7. Classification of actual soil moisture regimesa, b
Differentiating criteria ClassWater deficit occurs. Rooting-zone groundwater absent during the growing season.
Soil-stored reserve is used up and drought begins if current precipitation is insufficient for plant needs
Deficit > 3 months but ≤ 5 months (AET/PET ≤ 75 but > 55%)
very dry
Deficit > 1.5 months but ≤ 3 months (AET/PET ≤ 90 but > 75%)
moderately dry
Deficit > 0 but ≤ 1.5 months (AET/PET > 90%) slightly dry
No water deficit occurs. Rooting-zone groundwater usually absent during growing season.
Utilization (and recharge) occurs (current need for water exceeds supply and soil-stored water is used)
fresh
No utilization (current need for water does not exceed supply; temporary groundwater table [> 60 cm deep]may be present)
moist
No water deficit occurs. Rooting-zone groundwater present during the growing season.
Groundwater table > 30–60 cm deep very moistGroundwater table > 0 but ≤ 30 cm deep wetGroundwater table at or above the ground surface very wet
a Modified from Klinka et al. (2000).b AET – actual evapotranspiration; PET – potential evapotranspiration.

Haida Gwaii Field Guide 245
Determining Soil TextureSoil texture refers to the relative proportions of sand, silt, and clay within a soil. These components have their own distinctive properties of “feel,” allowing one to estimate their proportions in a sample of soil by hand texturing. To obtain accurate results, texturing must be done with a sample that has the correct moisture content. Both a table and a key procedure are provided. The user should become familiar with both methods and use the procedure that feels most comfortable.
Procedure for Hand Texturing. Crush a small handful of soil in the hand, and remove coarse fragments
(particles >2 mm in diameter).2. Gradually add water to the soil and, with a soil knife or fingers, work it into
moist putty. The correct moisture content is important. If the putty flows with the force of gravity, it is too wet. If it crumbles when rolled, it is too dry. It should have the consistency of filler putty.
3. Determine stickiness of the soil putty by working it between the thumb and forefinger, pressing and then separating the digits. An estimate of clay content (see table on next page) can be made in this way. (Clay limits below are approximate.)
non-sticky: Practically no soil material adheres to the thumb and forefinger (<0% clay).
slightly sticky: Soil material adheres to only one of the digits and comes off the other rather cleanly. The soil does not stretch appreciably when digits are separated (0–25% clay).
sticky: Soil material adheres to both digits and stretches slightly before breaking when digits are pulled apart (25–40% clay).
very sticky: Soil material adheres strongly to both digits and stretches dis-tinctly before breaking (>40% clay).
4. Determine the graininess of the soil putty by rubbing it between thumb and forefinger. An estimate of sand content (see table on next page) can be made in this way. (Sand limits below are approximate.)
non-grainy: Little or no graininess can be felt (<20% sand). slightly grainy: Some graininess is felt, but non-grainy material (silt and
clay) is dominant (20–50% sand). grainy: Sand is felt as the dominant material. Some non-grainy material can
be felt between sand grains (50–80% sand). very grainy: Sand is the only material felt. Little or no non-grainy material is
present (>80% sand). After stickiness and graininess have been determined, use the hand textur-ing guide as an approximate guide to the textural class of the soil. The textural triangle can be used for more accurately determining the textural class; it also displays the textural class used in the site unit descriptions.

a Sand and clay limits are approximate.b Loams contain balanced proportions of sand, silt, and clay and exhibit physical
properties intermediate between them.
Properties of fine fraction of soil
Clay: very hard when dry; feels smooth and is very sticky when wet; feels smooth when placed between teeth.
Silt: slightly hard to soft when dry; powder is floury when dry; feels slippery or soapy and only slightly sticky or non-sticky when wet; silt cannot be felt as grains between thumb and forefinger, but can be felt as a fine grittiness when placed between teeth.
Sand: loose grains when dry; very grainy when felt between thumb and forefin-ger; non-sticky when wet.
Haida Gwaii Field Guide 247
Procedure for Using Key for Hand Texturing
The field tests (outlined below and used in sequence with the accompanying key) are provided as another means to assist in the field determination of soil texture.
. Organic matter test: Well-decomposed organic matter (humus) imparts silt-like properties to the soil. It feels floury when dry and slippery or spongy when moist, but not sticky and not plastic. However, when subjected to a taste test (see below), it feels non-gritty. It is generally very dark when moist or wet, and stains the hands brown or black.
2. Graininess test: Rub the soil between your fingers. If sand is present, it will feel “grainy.” Determine whether sand comprises more or less than 50% of the sample. Sandy soils often sound abrasive when worked in the hand.
3. Moist cast test: Compress some moist (not wet) soil by clenching it in your hand. If the soil holds together (i.e., forms a “cast”), then test the durability of the cast by tossing it from hand to hand. The more durable it is (e.g., like Plasticine), the more clay is present.
4. Stickiness test: Wet the soil thoroughly and compress between thumb and forefinger. Determine the degree of stickiness by noting how strongly the soil adheres to the thumb and forefinger when you release the pressure, and by how much it stretches. Stickiness increases with clay content.
5. Taste test: Work a small amount of soil between your front teeth. Silt particles are distinguished as fine “grittiness” (e.g., like driving on a dusty road), unlike sand, which is distinguished as individual grains (i.e., graini-ness). Clay has absolutely no grittiness.
6. Soapiness test: Slide thumb and forefinger over wet soil. Degree of soapiness is determined by how soapy/slippery it feels and how much resistance to slip there is (i.e., from clay and sand particles).
7. Worm test: Roll some moist soil on your palm with your finger to form the longest, thinnest “worm” possible. The more clay there is in the soil, the longer, thinner, and more durable the worm will be. Try with wetter or drier soil to ensure that you have the correct moisture content (best worm).

A2.2 Common soil orders of Haida Gwaii
Soil is defined as the naturally occurring, unconsolidated mineral material (or organic material at least 0 cm thick) that occurs at the earth’s surface and is capable of supporting plant growth. The Canadian System of Soil Classifica-tion (Soil Classification Working Group 998) is a hierachical one based upon observable and measurable soil properties that reflect processes of soil genesis and environmental factors. Additional information about soil formation and classification is available in CSSC. Brunisols are defined by a moderate degree of soil development, with a brown-ish coloured Bm horizon, typical of well drained soils in forest environments with colder, less wet climates than Podzols. Dystric Brunisols are acid (pH < 5.5 over surface 25 cm), occurring on parent materials of low base status, while Eutric Brunisols have a greater degree of base saturation (pH > 5.5). Gleysols are defined by the presence of gleyed soil horizon, as indicated by a distinct dull blue–grey colour (gleying) or prominent rust-coloured blotches (mottles). These features are indicative of periodic or prolonged saturation with water and reducing conditions, usually associated with a high groundwater table or temporary saturation above a relatively impermeable layer. Organic soils include most of the soils commonly known as peat, muck, or bog soils. These soils have accumulated more than 60 cm of organic material derived from hydrophytic plants. Most organic soils are saturated with water for pro-longed periods, usually in depressions or level areas in regions with subhumid to perihumid climates. Organic soils are classified further into Fibrisols (poorly decomposed, with peat constituents easily recognized), Mesisols (partially de-composed), and Humisols (well decomposed). Typic organic soils have > 60 cm of organic accumulations while Terric organic soils have 60–60 cm of organic matter over mineral substrates. Folisols are composed of upland organic materi-als, generally of forest origin, that are > 40 cm thick, or at least 0 cm thick if over bedrock or fragmented materials. Folisols are most common in hypermari-time climates with imperfectly drained mineral soils; low decomposition rates and high production of bryophytes contribute to the accumulation of humus.Podzols are defined by reddish Bf horizons composed of humified organic mat-ter combined with aluminum and iron. Podzols typically occur in well-drained soils under forests or heath vegetation in cool, humid climates. Ferro-humic Podzols have a strongly acid, dark-coloured Bhf horizon > 0 cm thick. Humo-ferric Podzols have less organic matter in the B horizon and generally occur in less humid climates. Regosols are only weakly developed, and are often found with recently depos-ited materials such as alluvium in floodplains and colluvium on slopes. They are infrequently distributed, generally with early-seral forests and little forest floor accumulation.

APPENDIX 13 Classification of humus forms
A3. Definitions of humus form orders (from Green and Klinka 1994)
Humus is defined as a group of soil horizons located at or near the surface of a pedon, which have formed from organic residues. These horizons can have many forms depending on the physical and biotic environment and history of disturbance. Humus forms are organized in a two-tier classification of humus form orders (three orders: Mor, Moder, Mull) and humus form groups (6 groups; e.g., Hemimor or Rhizomull).
Humus form - the group of organic horizons, together with Ah mineral hori-zons, that occur at the soil surface.
L horizon - the organic (litter) horizon at the surface consisting of relatively fresh, undecomposed organic material.
F horizon - the organic horizon consisting of partially decomposed organic material (below the L horizon).
H horizon - the organic horizon consisting of well-decomposed organic mate-rial (below the F horizon).
HUMUS FORM orders
Mor– L,F,H horizons prominent.– F horizon matted; fungal mycelia
abundant.– “mushroom” smell.– usually abrupt transition to mineral soil.
Moder– L,F,H horizons prominent.– F horizon loose and friable; fungal
mycelia less abundant.– common insects and droppings.– rich, “potting soil” smell.– may have thin Ah horizons.
Mull– Ah horizon prominent; F,H horizons
< 2 cm, F horizon very friable.– Ah horizon usually granular, with
earthworms present.
