Your challengeTime is money – especially when it refers to stable and reliable operations at an airport. Increasing passenger rates, limited airport capacities and resistances against large-scale airport extensions (new termi nals or additional runways) have a negative impact on system perfor-mance. Operational problems in terms of system stability, relia bility and availability arise frequently and global targets as e.g. to reduce minimum connecting time cannot be adequately addressed. After typically seven to ten years of operation server computer suppliers provide IT hardware support contracts at significantly increased costs as their basis of installed systems will decrease or are even not able to provide support for outdated systems any longer. Spare part supply for peripheral devices becomes also more and more cost-intensive with increasing lifetime as electronic equip-ment enters slowly into the rising part of the “bathtub curve” at this point in time. This implies the need for a migration of server computers and peripherals to new state-of-the-art equipment. Application software components need also to be ported at this time.

Our solutionTo address these problems, Siemens offers a specialized service to renew BHS IT by replacing legacy applications during life operation. Our Baggage Base IT is the most innovative baggage handling system IT product in the world. Since 2003, Baggage Base IT has been success-fully implemented in airports at Beijing, Dubai, Incheon, Madrid, and Munich, among others. With Baggage Base IT, the baggage handling system business processes are operated by dedicated software components for sort allocation planning, hold baggage screening, early bag storage control, and plant visual-ization. All main processing rules are configurable, thus ensuring easy adapta-tion due to new or changed processing requirements, for example in the context of changing security regulations.

Even handling equipment from another vendor can be controlled by Baggage Base IT, and thus be elevated to a state-of-the-art solution.

Incremental integration for a seamless retrofit

When retrofitting IT systems, we follow an iterative approach. Our experts start with a comprehensive analysis of the existing IT infrastructure in order to get a deep understanding of the current con-trol system and to develop a migration master plan. The corresponding Baggage Base IT components will then be rolled out in well-defined steps. The old IT and the new Baggage Base IT will run in paral-lel for a certain period to provide safety, adequate means of testing, and fallback strategies. Each migration step concludes with an observation period.

No interruption thanks to interface interception

The seamless change of an existing IT and control system to the new Baggage Base IT system is enabled through the so-called interface interception method. The interceptor represents a group of applica-tions offering interface emulation, diagno-sis, and switching options implemented on server systems, or on a dedicated box computer. Thus, it can intervene in a running system, especially also to control systems from other vendors, to seamlessly elevate it to Baggage Base IT with mini-mal interruption.

Flexible hardware configuration

The Baggage Base IT hardware configu-ration is characterized by its flexibility to adapt to international transfer hubs as well as to regional airports. For example, several standard configurations are avail-able to accommodate various hourly bag throughputs. Adaptation to any individual requirement is easily possible. Further-more the usage of the Siemens Baggage Base IT software perfectly supports the throughput optimization of the total baggage handling system.

Baggage Base IT provides the best pos-sible system reliability and availability. Its software is thoroughly developed and intensively tested during all phases of development, and during commissioning on site.
