Care for Our Common Home:Cagayan de Oro

    By: Sr. Pearl Balbastro, DC

The Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro held its first study day on Laudato Si, the celebrated, first- ever encyclical of a Pope on the environment on August 24, 2015. Timed exactly three months after the encyclical was issued in Rome by Pope Francis, the study day was conducted at Archbishop Patrick Cronin Formation Hall, Cathedral Compound, Cagayan de Oro City. The diocesan study was attended by priests, sisters, and lay personnel and volunteers of the different ad extra and ad intra ministries of the archdiocesan, vicariate and parish offices. The participants numbered over a hundred.

Three very capable persons in the Archdiocese helped the participants understand the encyclical. They were: Fr. Reynaldo Raluto of St. John Vianney Theological Seminary; Br. Coke Daryl Prieto, a seminarian of San Jose Seminary in Manila, on a temporary mission in the Archdiocese; and Fr. Roberto C. Yap, President of Xavier University.

Fr. Raluto started with meanings: Laudato si, mi Signore means Praise be to you, my Lord. The title of the Encyclical is taken from the Canticle of the Creatures of St. Francis of Assisi. By their very being and fulfilling their roles in creation, all creation worships God. The encyclical is subtitled, Caring for our common home. Care is the attitude and fundamental virtue, the loving and non-aggressive relationship, with reality. Common home, from oikos in Greek, is the root word of ecology. The earth herself is among the most abandoned and maltreated of our poor. We ourselves are dust of the earth. The earth is home not only for humans but for all earthly creatures. The anthropocentric theory of creation is not a correct interpretation. Interdependence of all creation is Gods will. Peace, justice and preservation of creation cannot be separated. There is intrinsic value of all creatures. No branch of wisdom should be excluded in remedying the damage done. Whoever has greater power has greater responsibility.

Using the Churchs method of discernment which constitutes seeing, judging and acting, the encyclical sees seven issues: 1. Pollution, waste and climate change; 2. Water; 3.Loss of biodiversity; 4.Decline in the quality of human life; 5.Global inequality; 6. Weak responses; and 7. Lack of dialogue among variety of opinions.

There is a real need for ecological literacy to understand many terms and concepts like: systemic ecology (LS 92); ecosystems (LS 42); integral ecology (LS 63); ecological theology (LS 67-68); ecological virtues (LS 78). Fr. Raluto brought all these terms to the consciousness of his hearers.

Bro. Coke represented Msgr. Florencio Salvador, Jr. on the topic: Laudato Si on Liturgical Integration. Among the things he emphasized were: The encyclical offers Christian suggestions for ecological spirituality grounded on faith convictions, a spirituality which can motivate people to a more passionate concern for the protection of the world. This lofty commitment is capable of inspiring

one without an interior impulse which encourages, motivates, nourishes and gives meaning to our individual and communal activity. (LS 216) The sacraments are a privileged way in which nature is taken up by God to become a means of mediating supernatural life. (LS 235) Mary, the Mother who cared for Jesus, now cares with maternal affection and pain for this wounded world. Carried up into heaven she is the Mother and Queen of all creation. (LS 241)

Fr. Yap mentioned the most outstanding points of the encyclical with particular emphasis on the action part of the Church, following the see-judge-act process. The themes he highlighted were: The intimate relationship between the poor and the fragility of the planet; the conviction that everything in the world is connected (LS 16); true ecological approach always becomes a social approach; integrating questions of justice so as to hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor (LS 49). The understanding of the Genesis account granting man dominion over the earth is not a correct interpretation of the Bible as understood by the Church. Nowadays, we must forcefully reject the notion that our being created in Gods image and given

dominion over the earth justifies absolute domination over other creatures. (LS 67)

Only by cultivating sound virtues will people be able to make a selfless ecological commitment. There is a nobility in the duty to care for creation through little daily actions and it is wonderful how education can bring about real changes in lifestyle. Education in environmental responsibility can encourage ways of acting which directly and significantly affect the world around us, such as avoiding the use of plastic and paper, reducing water consumption, separating refuse, cooking only what can be reasonably consumed, showing care for other living beings, using public transport or car-pooling, planting trees, turning off unnecessary lights or any number of other practices. All these reflect a generous and worthy creativity which brings out the best in human beings. (LS 211)

All these learnings are more than enough to encourage all citizens of the earth, to resolve to help restore creation to its original beauty as God created it at the beginning and to till and keep it by caring, protecting, preserving it for future generations of humans, plants, and animals yet unborn.

Fr. Reynaldo Raluto, Br. Coke Daryl Prieto and Fr. Roberto C. Yap.

Abp.

Pope Francis recent encyclical, Laudato Si, enjoins all of us to care for our common home the earth. More directly, we are also challenged to care for our common home, the city of Cagayan de Oro. During fiesta time, we celebrate the gift of family, renew friendships, and strengthen the bonds of community.

During the time of Typhoon Sendong, affecting the entire city, we showed how we could all work together to help dislocated families who lost their houses and loved ones. A home is not only a house where a family lives; a home is built by the love that is shared by all members of the family. So too with our community; our City of Golden Friendship is built by the spirit of solidarity and concern for the common good. It is in this light that we can look at three challenges confronting our common home mentioned in Pope Francis encyclical.

Lately, a Peoples Council of concerned citizens, including residents of affected subdivisions, have voiced their concerns on the problem of pollution coming from the citys basurahan. The garbage dumpsite poses an immediate threat to the health of nearby housing areas. There has been a persistent clamor for a sanitary land fill and for solid waste management practices. The goals of zero waste can be achieved through reducing, recycling, and re using waste materials.

Last week, together with several ministry workers of the Archdiocese, I visited the J.R. Borja City Hospital upon invitation by its administrator, Dr. Ramon M. Nery. We

were glad to see the marked improvements not only in the physical structures, but more so in the hospital managements policies of accommodating the needs of all indigent families. However, we were told that the foul odor from the basurahan could be felt in the afternoons whenever the wind direction changes towards the hospital.

Clearly, the citys garbage issue can be solved if the citys executive and legislative officials can work together and go beyond partisan politics for the sake of the common good. But it is also a challenge for all of us to do our part in making sure that our surroundings are clean and hospitable.

A second challenge mentioned in Pope Francis encyclical is the issue of water. There are a number of housing areas, including Typhoon Sendong relocation sites, still do not have regular access to clean drinking water. And yet, as Pope Francis remarks, access to safe drinkable water is a basic and universal human right, since it is a condition for the exercise of other human rights. (LS, 30)

Water scarcity may be a constant problem in some areas of the city. On the other hand, two much water in times of heavy rains can severely threaten the city, as what happened during Typhoon Sendong. Hence there is the call for watershed protections which extends to the upland area of north-western Bukidnon.

Since 2010, we have formed a Cagayan de Oro River Basin Management Council (CDORBMC), of which I am co-chair together with the regional directors of DENR and

DILG and the city mayor. As a multi-sectoral group involving government agencies, LGUs, academe, business, NGOs, and church communities, the Council has undertaken the tasks of rehabilitation of watershed areas, mobilization of local government units, community development, and resource management.

The ongoing fluvial procession as we celebrate this Mass is not only a way of honoring our patron, San Agustin, and his mother, Sta. Monica, but also our Birhen sa Kota sa Cagayan de oro (Our Lady of the Fort of Cagayan de Oro). Her protective image on the river should remind us that she is also our Birhen sa Kinaiyahan (Our Lady of the Environment.

Here again, all of us are asked to do our share in protecting and conserving the environment by such practices as tree-growing, proper waste management, etc.

Pope Francis encyclical stresses that environmental ecology is closely linked to an ecology of man. Our relationship to the environment stems from our relationship to one another. This then is the third challenge we face: the peace and dis-order in our society.

Over the past two weeks, in our city, we heard about the senseless killings of two young persons 14 year old Stacey Villar on August 13th, and a 9 year old Cairistian CJ Balguin on August 21st. These two innocent persons were killed by perpetrators who were allegedly high on drugs. The problem of drug-trafficking is another form of pervasive pollution that threatens the well-being

of our residents, whether in guarded subdivisions or in slum areas. The majority of city jail inmates, we are told, are there for crimes related ultimately to drug addiction. Once more, we appeal not only to law-enforcing authorities but to all of us to be vigilant in detecting and reporting instances of drug trafficking.

On a larger scale, the peace process in Mindanao needs our understanding of its historical context and a re-examination of our biases and prejudices. Notwithstanding several changes being introduced in Congress to the draft Bangsamoro Basic Law, ultimately the crafting of a meaningful BBL accepted to both sides still offers the best chances of winning a just and lasting peace for Mindanao. We are all stakeholders in His process.

Pope Francis points out the need for an Integral Ecology that encompasses Environmental and Social Ecology. Our three concerns over Pollution, Water, and Peace bring out this interconnectedness of all living creative with Mother Earth.

Highlighting this interconnectedness and as a response to Laudato Si, the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro is launching a Season of Creation, starting this August 28 until October 7, 2015, the Feast of our Birhen sa Kota Our Lady of the Rosary. The six Sundays of this season will focus on various themes related to our care of the environment and our human society. May our City of Man follow closely the vision of St. Augustines City of God.

Care for Our Common Home:Cagayan de Oro

Archbishop Antonio J. Ledesma, S.J.(Homily at Concelebrated Mass, Feast of St. Augustine,

    Metropolitan Cathedral, 28 August 2015)

Pope Francis in his encyclical, Laudato Si reminds us of our divine responsibility to care for Gods creation, which we must live out in our daily lives. On the contrary, we have neglected this very solemn responsibility. We have failed to conserve, protect even defend the vast treasures that God bestowed to humanity. Our Ecosystems have been destroyed from the forest down to reefs; our once beautiful and bountiful land has been reduced to mere subject for materialism and profits of the few. The primary victims of our irresponsibility are the poor. Many of our people languish in poverty, deprivation and inequalities. We do not need to look beyond our Archdiocese; we have experienced the tragedy brought by Sendong. We must listen both to the cry of the earth, and the cry of the poor.

TO: CLERGY, AND LAY FATHFUL Of THE ARCHDIOCESE OF CAGAYAN DE OROFROM: ARCHBISHOP ANTONIO J, LEDESMA, SJ, DDSUBJECT: GUIDELINES AND ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IN THE LAUDATO SI-SEASON OF CREATION AND PETITION SIGNING FOR GLOBAL CATHOLIC CLIMATE MOVEMENT

In the face of this enormous challenge, the Holy Father reminds us of the centrality of ecological conversion, a transformation of the heart. It is only through this process of renewal, that we regain our identity as stewards of creation; then can see the urgency to do something, to care for our common home. We have the capacity to do even in our simple ways to help in caring for creation. Responding to Laudato Si the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro observes the Season of Creation in our Liturgical Calendar; beginning August 28, 2015 (the Feast of St. Augustine) and culminating on October 7, 2015 (the Feast of Birhen sa Kota sa Cagayan de Oro - Our Lady of the Holy Rosary). The over-all theme of the season is: Nature - Gods Superfluous Gift of Providence; Stewardship Humanitys Collateral Manifestation of that Covenant. There will be six (6) Sundays of this Season and there are suggested themes, activities and study guides for observance that will be sent via email. The parishes, religious men and women, church organizations, institutions, and all the faithful are encouraged to observe and do active participation in the conservation protection of our mother Earth. One of the activities we foster is a response to the problem of Climate Change. Thus, we are invited to let our voices join Pope Francis call for Climate Justice and actively participate in the Global Catholic Climate Movement signature campaign Sign and let us gather 10 million signatures to press our political leaders to have political will to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.Together, let us pray and actively involve - in the work to become responsible stewards of Gods creation in our home, work, church and community. Let us Help Restore our Common Home. May God be praised!

66th Feast of San Roque Chapel: Baptism and Fiesta Celebration

The San Roque Chapel of the parish of the Sacred Heart celebrated its 66th feast day in honor of its patron, San Roque. To prepare for this great feast,

the parish offered a novena and mass for nine days. Prior to this, a series of seminars were given by Sister Marge Manabat to the parents of the children to be baptized in preparation for the reception of the sacrament of Baptism. Twenty-three children were baptized by Fr. Muriel Uy, SSS. It was inspiring to see how the parents made the effort to ensure their children receive new life in Christ. After the Baptismal rites, a bountiful feast was set at the chapel with Fr. Muriel, Rev. Fr. Jose Daniel Coronel, SSJV, all the devotees and lay people. (Santuario Eucaristico News)By Sweet Kristine Ace Adorio and Ma.

Perseus P. AWRACO Annual General Assembly

Be courageous, charitable and compassionate: prophetic witnesses of the Gospel of Joy among the Poor!

This was the message of Fr. Alexander Gaut, SVD, keynote speaker at the annual General Assembly of the Association of Women Religious of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro AWRACO) held on August 21, 2015 at the RVM Regional House, in Carmen Cagayan de Oro City.

More than 100 Sisters from the 26 Women Institutes of Consecrated Apostolic Life and Pious Associations in the Archdiocese lent their ears, minds and hearts as Fr. Gaut, an Indonesian sociologist , and member of the SVD community of the University of San Carlos, Cebu City, passionately shared his person and mission. The theme of the assembly: Prophetic Witnesses of the Gospel of Joy among the Poor, integrated the themes of the Philippine Church celebration of the Year of the Poor, and the international Year of Consecrated Life.

Fr. Gaut delved into his hearts treasure: his mission to what others call the forgotten, and the ugliest faces of humanity. He recounted stories which pulled his audience right into the scene

    Fr. Alexander Gaut, SVD

    Sr. Pearl Balbastro, DC

with empathy, moving many of them to tears. Using human trafficking terms, he started by saying that the religious are the recruited, chosen by Jesus to go in his behalf. They are the empowered, blessed by Him; the commissioned, sent by Him for something, to become the alternative. That is, to tell humanity of Gods dream for all persons, in different ways, through the charism of the particular community or congregation.

He said that religious are messengers of the mystery of the incarnation, by becoming one with the people they are sent. From incarnation to resurrection, religious life is a kenosis: allowing the inner life to be filled with God, putting it at the service of humanity, doing it with courage and compassion. The religious bring Christ to the people they are sent; becoming Christ by triple transference: physical transference by their words of sympathy, empathy, engagement and presence. Mental transference by discernment or choosing to do what God wants which is: to do justly, to love tenderly and to walk humbly. And lastly, by moral transference: from vitality to morality.

Archbishop Ledesma, in his homily, mentioned three important calls for the consecrated persons: to be mystics, prophets and servants. He also highlighted the Blessed Mother as the Star of the New Evangelization, who listened to God, said her yes and hastened to serve those in need. She was indeed a model religious!

After lunch, Archbishop Ledesma shared what transpired during the recent meeting of the Federation of Asian Bishops Conference. Sr. Elsie Nini, FdCC, AWRACO chairperson, reported on the activities of the Association in the period August 2014 to August 2015 which was very encouraging and inspiring. The Treasurers report which followed showed the simple life of the association.

    Sigla, Kalusugan at Buhay Gipahigayon

Mapasalamaton ang tanan sa mamumulong: Dodgie and Mai Osabal, Nguu and Elvira Nguyen, Edgar Valenzuela ug Cristina Liamzon.

  • Features LAMDAG5Eucharist as Mission, Mission as Dialogue

As part of the preparation for the upcoming 51st International Eucharistic Conference in January 2016, a second conference was successfully given last August 15, 2015 by Fr. Poli Ty, SSS with the theme: Eucharist as Mission, Mission as Dialogue. Below are notes from the conference he gave.

Eucharist as Giving ThanksEucharist comes from the Greek word eu (good) charis (gift) which means to give thanks. Fr. Poli Ty emphasized that before we do thanksgiving, we must open our eyes to recognize the wonders God continuously reveals to us. And, we must encourage our brothers and sisters to celebrate their giftedness by being a blessing themselves. We live the gospel joyfully.

Eucharist as Memorial of Sacrifice of ChristThe Eucharist is also a memorial of the sacrifice of Christ but it should be clear to us that it is not solely a recollection of past events but also the proclamation of the mighty works of God present in our lives. To re-member is become a member again, meaning, to once again be part of a reality, a body. Jesus sacrificed His life for our salvation. To sacrifice is to be made holy. And so, whenever we unite ourselves with

the offering of Jesus, we make an offering of ourselves by which we are made holy. The Eucharist is the sacrament of Gods love!As source, we were made holy by our Lords sacrifice. So the Eucharist serves as our source of courage and strength. As a goal, we say Yes as people redeemed by Christs death and resurrection.

Eucharist as sacrament of Gods PresenceFr. Poli Ty listed some of the ways that Christ is present to His Church:

In the assembly that have gathered to celebrate In His words that is proclaimed In the ministers who preside Most especially in the Eucharistic species, the bread and wine transformed to His Body and Blood. It was emphasized that the Eucharist is not a sign, not symbol and not a presentation. It is the actual presence of Christ which encourages us to become what we receive, the Body of Christ. Therefore, we are transformed to be the living presence of Christ whose goal is to encourage others and the community to become witnesses of Gods love.

Eucharist as Paschal BanquetJesus established a new covenant which is His relationship with us as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Whenever we do this in memory of him, we participate in the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ. In the Eucharist, we experience and celebrate what it means to be Gods People, His Church. Therefore as source, we celebrate the Paschal Mystery and we are in communion with Christ. As goal, we are sent to be bread broken for others.

Celebrating Gods Mercy and Compassion through the Years

With this theme, the Missionary Sisters of the Holy Family (MSHF) celebrated their 35th Foundation Anniversary and 25th Anniversary of Religious Profession of Sr. Concepcion Lucagbo Cimacio, MSHF and Sr. Marian Lagitao Tagupa, MSHF, at San Nicolas de Tolentino Parish, Mambajao, Camiguin Province on May 13, 2015. The event started with a Eucharistic Celebration at 5:00 PM presided by his Excellency Antonio J. Ledesma, SJ, D.D., Archbishop of Cagayan de Oro. The concelebrants were: Rev. Fr. Joe L. Tagupa, SVD, brother of Sr. Marian L. Tagupa, MSHF, Rev. Fr. Gary Igot, SSJV, Rev. Fr. Joseph Montemayor, SSJV, Rev. Fr. Wiliam Salva, SSJV, Rev. Fr. Joe E. Villamil, SSJV, Rev. Fr. Pete Ubalde, SSJV, Rev. Fr. Rickets Dancela, SSJV, and Rev. Fr. Loloy Quidet, SSJV. The celebration was also graced by the presence of some Religious Sisters: Teresian Daughters of Mary (TDM) Religious Sisters of Mercy (RSM), Sisters of the Holy Spirit (SspS), Religious of the Good Shepherd (RGS), and the Lasallete Sisters.

This years theme expresses the Congregations gratitude for Gods unconditional love and the guidance of the Holy Spirit in the lights and shadows of their experiences as they journey through life.

The MSHF was founded by the late Archbishop Patrick Henry Murphy Cronin, SSC. D.D. He was a Columban Priest, who was Archbishop of Cagayan de Oro in 1970-1991.

He formally accepted the group in May 13, 1980, under the patronage of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph of Nazareth.

Archbishop Antonio Ledesma, in his homily, pondered on the real essence of Consecrated Life and reiterated that by the example of the Congregations Patron, we can be true disciples of Jesus Christ, as consecrated people. In this Year of Consecrated Life, and in this celebration, all priests and religious present especially the MSHF, were reminded to make their vows and duties visible, especially to the poor. He also thanked the Sisters in their involvement and their great help in the Archdiocese.

A dinner party concluded the celebration with the relatives and friends of the jubilarians, Sr. Conie and Sr. Marian (both from Mambajao), with the Congregations friends and benefactors and the parishioners of San Tolentino Parish in thanksgiving for all the blessings for all the blessings and graces the Congregation received from God.

The Congregation thanked the Archbishop, the people of Mambajao, particularly their Parish Priest Fr. William Salva, their parish leaders, their friends and benefactors and supporters from other towns of Camiguin province, from Cagayan de Oro City, and all those, who in one way or another made the event fruitful.

    SJVTS Holds 25th Alumni Homecoming

About 195 alumni from various dioceses in Mindanao and Bohol gathered for the 25th Alumni Homecoming of St. John Vianney Theological Seminary on August 24-25, 2015. Sponsored by the SAHA batch of 2012 and the Ikaduhang Bunga of 1991, this years Alumni Homecoming tackled the theme Graces and Struggles for the past 25 years with Fr. Timoteo Ofrasio, SJ, former rector of SJVTS, as keynote speaker. Fr. Tim as he is popularly known led the alumni in revisiting the seminarys history where graces and struggles are closely interwoven. For the older alumni Fr. Tims talk brought back memories of Spartan living in the newly established seminary when water was scarce, mosquitoes plentiful in the screen-less rooms and the grounds very dusty when dry, and so muddy when it rained.

The highlight of the first night was the testimonial dinner hosted by the sponsoring batches during which Fr. Joel Lusat from the Unang Bunga spoke of his experiences (graces and struggles) as a Viannista for the last twenty five

years. The silver jubilarians, the batch of 1990, better known as Unang Bunga, were this years honorees. Those present each received a Rogate-made statue of St. John Mary Vianney, courtesy of the SJVTS Alumni Association led by Fr. Raoul Emmanuel Magracia, outgoing President and Vianney 300. Through Fr. Magracias initiative a new Vianney tradition was born. From this time on, every year, the silver jubilarians will be honored with the gift of the Vianney statue during the Alumni Homecoming. On the first night the alumni grouped together by batch for post-dinner sharing and kumustahan. The second day highlights were the Rectors report, Fr. Tim Ofrasios talk and the election of the new set of officers of the SJVTS Alumni Association. Elected were the following: Fr. Robert Selecios (Malaybalay), President, Fr. Julius Clavero (CDO), Vice-President and Fr. Joseph Borja (Butuan), Secretary-Treasurer.

On the evening of the last day, the alumni and their friends and the seminary community were treated to a sumptuous meal which included a roasted calf and lots of chicken barbecue. The very talented and versatile 4ID Diamond Band provided the music throughout the night. Not to be outdone were some alumni who belted out songs and showcased their musical talents. Gathered by diocese, the alumni and seminarians truly had a memorable and enjoyable night which included group dancing. The success of this years Alumni Homecoming was largely due to the cooperation and hard work of the seminarians especially the Alumni Homecoming committee headed by Sem. Joshua Zaportiza, the Alumni Liaison in coordination with the SJVTS Alumni Association headed by Fr. Raoul Magracia (SJVTS Administrator) and the SAHA batch headed by Fr. Craig Jubac (Diocese of Tagbilaran). This years Homecoming is considered as one of the biggest gatherings so far.

Free medical services forumBy Allan Porto Claves

Dako nga kalamboan para sa Cagayan de Oro City nga adunay City Hospital that is open with free medical services para sa tanan, said Archbishop Antonio J. Ledesma, S.J., D.D., in his brief message at the forum on Free Medical Assistance held at the J. R. Borja General Hospital on August 21, 2015. The said forum was attended by representatives from the different vicariates, ad-intra and ad-extra ministry-workers of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro. Dr. Ramon M. Nery, MD, FPSO, MHP, CEO VI, Executive Officer of J. R. Borja General Hospital, stressed that this is the perfect weather for healthcare, considering that after 2016, a change in the political set-up will also mean changes in the delivery of health services to the people. In his presentation, Dr. Nery emphasized the need to spend the P1 billion hospital endowment fund before October 2015 so that they can avail of the additional P3M endowment fund from PCSO. Considering that the city hospital is still at level I category, it can only give free services to minor surgical cases and OB Gyne services. It has also x-ray, orthopedic, nutrition, laboratory and other services. During the open-forum, Dr. Nery was irritated when one of the representatives reported that her neighbor was asked to pay P1, 500.00 for ambulance services that transferred a patient from the city hospital to the provincial hospital. Dr. Nery urged that a complaint be filed so that he can investigate and impose penalty on the employee involved. Dr. Nery added that they are fully implementing the no balance billing at their hospital for Phil-Health members. Senior citizens, 4Ps beneficiaries, NHTS are automatically members of Phil-Health. He further stressed that aside from promoting courtesy, medical staff and employees will show respect and hospitality to all patients and hospital visitors. Medical staff and employees are now receiving

Abp. Antonio J. Ledesma SJ,D.D uban ni Dr. Ramon Neryadditional compensations and benefits. He also expressed concern about the suffocating stench in the afternoons which comes from a garbage landfill nearby. After the open-forum, the participants went around the hospital and saw the great changes in the facilities and recent renovations. The emergency reception area is spotless, fully- air conditioned and boasts of state-of-the-art patients bed. Even though patients at the OB Gyne Section were numerous, the ward was orderly. The Out-Patient-Department (OPD) consultation waiting area is also fully air-conditioned and equipped with calling facility. The Pharmacy staffs were instructed that the nurses will be the ones to get the prescribed medicines, not the patients watchers. All that was observed was a manifestation of the improvement in the hospitals facilities, medical staff, accommodation and treatment. The vision of J. R. Borja General Hospital is To be the nations primer Local Government Hospital with fiscal autonomy and preferential option for the poor and the underprivileged. Dr. Nerys leadership dreams of upgrading the hospital in 2016 and opening the private rooms on the 3rd floor next month. All of the improvements are through the collective effort of the Department of Health, the City Government and PCSO. Mr. Carl Cabaraban, one of the organizers of the said forum and a worker of the Social Action Apostolate (SAC) of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro, assured the audience that an information campaign for the said free medical services of J. R. Borja General Hospital will be disseminated properly to all concerned. Archbishop Ledesma went with the group as they went through the different sections of the city hospital and stayed until the forum ended.

Ledesma gave the example of saint of the day, Maximilian Kolbe. He was a priest and martyr who volunteered himself for execution in exchange for a family man. His heroic act should inspire everyone to be men for others. (Santuario Eucaristico News)
