History● Dates back at least 2,000 years● Originally known as “battledore”

and “shuttlecock”, in Ancient Greece, China, and India

● Got it’s name (Badminton) from Badminton House- home of the Duke of Beaufort in England

● In 1873, the Duke introduced a version of the game he learned from India to his guests

● Debuted officially in the Olympics in 1992

Objective- Doubles BadmintonThe objective of badminton is for a team to attempt to land the shuttlecock on the opposing team’s side of the court. A point is earned by forcing the opposing side to miss the shuttlecock with their racquet, resulting in it touching the ground.

Starting a Game- Scorekeeping● Begin with a game of Ro-Sham-Bo for choice of service

or court side● Serving team chooses the player who will serve first,

receiving team chooses the player who will receive first● You can only score in intervals of 1 point● We will play to 15 points (modified)● Must win by at least two points

Serving Rules

Both feet must be touching floor on contact

Serving Rotation● Rally serving, if you serve and your team scores, you continue to serve

but switch to the adjacent service court● You must win a point to gain service back (receiving team)● Service court is determined by your team's point total● Even number of points (including zero) = serve from right court● Odd number of points = serve from left court● If a player faults on serve, the other team earns a point and service

“Net Cord”● When the birdie hits the top

part of the net and tumbles to the other side of the court

● The rule is the same during service or during play

● You win a point if the birdie drops to the other side of the court as a result of a Net Cord

Methods of Scoring● If your team grounds the birdie on the opponent’s side of the court● If the opposing team fails to return the birdie over the net● If the opposing team touches the net with any part of their body or

racquet● If the opposing team strikes the birdie against the ceiling or parts of the

ceiling● If the opposing team strikes the birdie twice in succession (must go over

in one hit)● If the birdie does not fall into the correct service court (fault)
