Assemble Badge Wallet

EXTERIOR BADGE WALLET:

1. PREPARE VINYL POCKETS (Image 2): Fold one 1 ¾” x 16” fabric strip in half lengthwise. Press. Place raw edges of the binding along one 6” edge of the Exterior Badge pocket. Stitch with ¼” seam. Repeat on opposite side of the pocket. Fold binding to opposite side of the vinyl. Topstitch in place along the folded edge. Repeat the process for the 5” edges of the Interior Vinyl ID pocket. Set ID Pocket aside.

Image 2

EMBELLISHMENT:

1. CHOOSE EMBELLISHMENT FOR THE FRONT OF THE BADGE WALLET: Available space is approximately 4” x 4”. We used Carol Ingram’s Spools of Thread from the Sulky Embroidery Club (www.sulkyembclub.com)

2. FOR MACHINE EMBROIDERY (Image 1):

a. HOOP: Hoop the Cut Away Plus Stabilizer. Spray the wrong side of the Exterior Badge piece. Place in the hoop with the cross bars centered under the needle of the machine. It is VERY IMPORTANT to baste the fabric down before starting to stitch the design.

b. MARK FABRIC: On the 6” x 12 ½” Exterior Badge Piece, place a cross bar or Target Sticker 2 ½” down from the top and centered as shown. This is the center of the design area.

c. Stitch out the design. Remove from hoop. Press.

Image 3

HINT: FOR FREE-MOTION EMBROIDERY:PREPARE FABRIC: Mark Fabric as noted in step 2b. Spray the back of the Exterior Badge piece in the Embellishment area. Place the Piece with onto the Cut Away Plus Stabilizer. Print your pattern out onto Printable Sticky Fabri-Solvy or trace onto Sulky® Solvy™. Complete Free Motion work using your favorite technique.

HINT for Vinyl: Place a Teflon “Slip Sheet” on the machine or SulkyTear-Easy Stabilizer on the vinyl top and bottom to keep vinylfrom sticking to machine or foot.

2. PLACE BADGE POCKET (Image 3): Measure 4” from the bottom edge (opposite edge from the Embellishment) of Exterior Badge. Place one bound edge of the Vinyl ID pocket at the 4” mark. Stitch Pocket in place over the previous binding stitching. With a ¼” seam, baste the pocket on either side, leaving the top of the pocket open.

INTERIOR BADGE WALLET:

1. PREPARE CASH POCKET PIECES (Image 4): Fold one 8” side of the Interior Cash Pocket ¼” to the wrong side. Press.

Fold one 8” side of the Cash Pocket Placket ¼” to the wrong side. Press. (I used glue to hold the fold and then pressed.)

2. INSERT ZIPPER (Image 5 & 6): With the Zipper facing up, place the edge of the folded Interior Cash Pocket on the left side close to the zipper teeth. Extend the zipper ¼” past the edge of the Pocket. Zipper will be longer than the 8” piece. (Note: I used a 10” zipper in the photo.) Place zipper foot on the machine. Adjust foot and needle so that the stitching will be close to the folded edge of the Pocket. Open the Zipper. Stitch zipper in place. Place the folded edge of the Placket on the other side of the zipper. Re-adjust zipper foot and needle so that the stitching will be close to the folded edge of the Placket. Stitch. Do not trim the zipper yet.

3. INSERT THE SHORT ZIPPER (Image 7 & 8): Fold one 6” edge of the 6” x 5” Side Pocket over ¼”. Press. Fold the 6” edge of Exterior Badge Wallet below the vinyl Badge Pocket over ¼”. Insert Zipper following directions in step 2.

4. STITCH ID POCKET IN PLACE (Image 9): Fold one edge of the 5” x 3 ½” bound ID Pocket under ¼”. Position top of the ID Pocket 1 ½” from top of Cash Pocket as shown. Lay the folded edge next to zipper stitching. Using Zipper Foot, topstitch the ID Pocket in place along the zipper stitching line. Change to ¼” Foot. Continue stitching along bottom edge of the binding. Baste the left edge of the Pocket with a ¼” seam. If necessary, trim the excess vinyl from the left edge.

FINISHING

1. JOIN EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR PIECES (Image 10): Lay Exterior Badge Wallet piece right side up with embroidery to the left and zipper to the right. Place the 6” edge of the Interior Assembly right sides together with the excess zipper tape to the right as shown. Center the Interior Assembly as it may not exactly match up with the Exterior width. Change back to the ¼” foot. Stitch Exterior and Interior together with ¼” seam. Reinforce the seam in the zipper area. Open new assembly up. Fold seam towards the 4” zipper. Topstitch the seam. Trim the long Zipper.

2. SEW VELCRO (Image 11): Center the Velcro loop on the Side Pocket near the 4” zipper as shown. Stitch securely around all 4 sides. Position Velcro Hook 1 ½” to the left of the bottom of the ID Pocket so that it lines up with the Loop when the Side Pocket is folded over. Stitch securely around all four sides.

3. PEN HOLDER (Image 12): Fold both 3” edges of the Pen Holder to the wrong side ¼”. Topstitch to close to raw edge. With wrong sides together, fold Pen Holder in half creating a 1 ½” x 3” piece. Matching all raw edges, baste into place on right side of Badge Wallet just above the Badge Pocket. See Image 13.

4. STRAPS (Images 13): Using a ¼” seam allowance, join the two 1 ¾” x WOF strips together on the diagonal as shown. Press Seam open. Centering seam, trim strap to 30” long. Fold Strap in half lengthwise. Press. Fold each long edge to center press mark. Press. (I used fabric sizing to get a crisp fold.) Fold in half again matching pressed edges. Press. Topstitch down each side close to folds.

5. PLACE STRAPS (Images 14): On 6” side next to the embellishment, place the raw edges of the Strap 5/8” from the outer edge of the Badge Wallet as shown. Make sure the strap is not twisted. Baste in place ¼” from raw edge. Tuck Strap to the vinyl Badge Pocket to keep it from getting into a seam.

6. FORM THE WALLET. Open long zipper so that you can turn right side out! Fold wallet in half. Short zipper will fold about 3/8” into the Interior of the wallet. The raw edges of the interior wallet may not be exactly the width of the exterior due to variances during the zipper insertion. Using the Exterior piece as your stitching guide, stitch side seams with ½” Seam. Stitch 6” end seam with ¼” seam. Clip Corners. Turn Badge Wallet right sides out. Use a blunt pointed tool to help push corners out.

7. FINISH THE WALLET: Press your Wallet. Topstitch 1/8” from outer edge
