1 The HP StoreOnce B6200 Backup SystemAn HP service specialist will install the HP B6200 Backup System. It is supplied partially configuredand is made up as follows:

• One or two HP B6000 Extended Rack Assemblies with stabilizers

• The rack contains at least one base couplet (consisting of two server nodes and two dualcontroller disk arrays each with 12 disks) and two switches. The two switches are dedicatedto support a network internal to the product. They cannot be used in a customer’s externalnetwork. Up to two couplets may be installed in each rack.

• Additional pairs of 12-disk storage shelves may be purchased to expand storage (up to threepairs of storage shelves may be installed per couplet).

NOTE:• The HP B6200 Backup System can only be installed in an HP B6000 rack.

• An HP B6000 rack should only be used for HP B6200 Backup Systems and supported storageexpansion shelves.

• Do not plan to install additional units, such as Ethernet network switches, in the rack. You willnot be able to expand storage, if you do so.

• When installing a second couplet, it is located in rack positions 27 to 34 inclusive.

• If installing a two-rack system, the racks must be located next to each other to ensure thereare no problems with cable lengths. If installing a one-rack system, be sure to plan for futureexpansion.

Warnings and cautionsThe customer is not normally expected to unpack and handle the product. However, should thisprove necessary, care must be taken to avoid damage to people and equipment. For this reason,safety and handling instructions are included below. Be sure to read them if you need to move or

unpack the product. You should also read the Safety Booklet on Documentation CD that is suppliedwith your product.

WARNING! To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment, before installingequipment be sure that:• The leveling jacks are extended to the floor.

• The full weight of the rack rests on the leveling jacks.

• The stabilizing feet are attached to the rack if it is a single-rack installation.

• The racks are coupled together in multiple-rack installations.

• Only one component is extended at a time. A rack may become unstable if more than onecomponent is extended for any reason.

WARNING! To reduce the risk of personal injury or equipment damage when unloading a rack:• At least two people are needed to safely unload a rack from a pallet. The weight of an HP

B6000 rack can be between that of a Single Couplet Rack (281 kg) and a fully configured2 Couplet rack (764 kg). It can stand more than 2.1 m (7 ft) tall, and may become unstablewhen being moved on its casters.

• Never stand in front of a rack when it is rolling down the ramp from the pallet. Always handlea rack from both sides.

Power/PDU requirementsTwo power outlets are required for each couplet. But it is strongly recommended that each rackbe installed with four outlets to allow for ease of expansion, even if the rack has only one couplet.

IMPORTANT: If only two PDUs are connected on a single couplet configuration, they must beconnected to the relevant connection on each side of the rack. If not, and power is applied to onlyone side of the rack, then only half of the power supplies on the hardware will be powered on.

Power specificationThe power factor is close to unity.Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs), type C, are required to prevent tripping with the initial poweron surge of the racks.

3 Connecting to your network

IMPORTANT: The network configuration is probably the most complex aspect of installation.Please take time to read this chapter before completing the Network checklist later in this document,see Network requirements (page 28).

Each couplet is a paired combination of two nodes that are directly connected in failover pairs. Ifone node fails, the system is designed to failover to the other node without any external interactionfrom the customer. The B6000 Series Backup System uses a concept called a Virtual NetworkInterface (VIF) to make this possible.In very simple terms:

• The physical IP addresses relate to the physical ports that are used to connect the HP B6200Backup System to the customer's network

• The Virtual Network Interface (VIF) addresses are the IP addresses that the customer uses toconnect to the B6000 Management Console and to target backup and replication jobs.Because these are never directly linked to a physical port they continue to function correctlyin the event of node failure.

For a more detailed discussion of how VIFs and IP addresses are used see Understanding VIFaddresses (page 13).

What is currently supported• IPv4 is supported.

• DNS is supported.

• A maximum of two sub-nets is supported, which can be used as follows: one sub-net for data(NAS shares, Catalyst stores and replication) and one sub-net for management.

• For software revision 3.3.0 and greater up to two gateways are supported. If you wish toconfigure two sub-nets with only one external gateway, make sure that the gateway is on thesame sub-net as the network that requires access to remote sites.

• NAS shares, Catalyst stores and replication data use the same Ethernet channel.

• If you wish to use your Ethernet channel for replication only, the only supported backup optionis to create VTL libraries on Fibre Channel.

• The network configuration applies to all nodes in the cluster. For example, you cannot haveseparate network configurations for each rack in a two-rack system.

What is not currently supported• IPv6 is not supported.

• DHCP is not supported.

• There is no VTL support on Ethernet using the iSCSI protocol.

Factory default cablingThe HP B6200 Backup System contains an internal 10GbE and 1 GbE private network. Thiscomprises two HP ProCurve 1GbE/10GbE network switches per 4–node cluster. There is a 1GbEconnection to the iLO3 network interface on each node. This network is for internal data pathfailover and management traffic only. There is no user access permitted to this network.

The cabling required to connect to each switch is pre-installed. The cabling to each node is shownin the following diagram. The ports illustrated are reserved for use with the internal network switch.

CAUTION: You should NEVER unplug the default factory cabling and you should NEVER connectthe customer network to the internal network switches at the top of the racks.

Understanding Virtual Interface (VIF) addressesTo understand the IP address allocation on supported configurations (called templates and describedbelow), it is important to understand the difference between Physical IP ports and Virtual (VIF)addresses.To summarize:

• You should ensure that you have sufficient IP addresses to cover both the physical portconnections and the virtual connections that the HP StoreOnce Backup System generates duringnetwork configuration.

• The number of IP addresses that you require depends upon the template that you select (andits implementation of physical ports and VIF addresses), and the number of couplets that youhave installed.

• It is strongly recommended that you allocate sufficient IP addresses to support a fully expandedtwo-rack system (with 8 nodes). This means that the network does not need to be re-configuredif you start with a one-rack system and subsequently expand it.

• If you have to re-configure your network, you must also re-configure backup targets andreplication configurations.

Physical IP ports• The physical ports are the ports that are used to connect the HP StoreOnce Backup System to

the customer’s network.• Two 10GbE and four 1GbE ports are available on each node for connecting to the customer’s

Ethernet network(s).• Physical ports are always bonded and a physical IP address is required for each external

bonded Ethernet port. Once the HP service engineer has configured your network, the physicalIP addresses are subsequently used for HP support purposes only.

VIF addresses• The VIF addresses are key to ensuring continued performance and availability in the event of

failover and are assigned as part of the network configuration process.• There are two instances of VIF addresses: the Management Console VIF and Data Path VIFs.

• The B6000 Management Console uses the Management VIF address to access the BackupSystem from the customer’s network for all manageability tasks. Because this ManagementVIF address is dynamic on the system, it can be active on the master node and passive on theother nodes, but should the master node fail for any reason the Virtual Management Consolesimply moves to another node and can still be accessed using the same VIF address.

• The VIF Data Path address is associated to a service set, which is the set of services (VTL, NAS,Catalyst, replication and so on), available for a node. Should the physical port fail, data willautomatically be processed by the service set associated with the failover port using the VIFData Path address. No change is needed to the VIF address of the service set, allowing hostsand the B6000 Backup System to function correctly. Each couplet has two nodes and, therefore,two service sets, which means that each couplet has two Data Path VIFs.

IMPORTANT: The VIF addresses are the IP addresses that you, the customer, need to know toaccess the B6000 Management Console (the management VIF), and to configure Catalyst andNAS backup targets, VTL and NAS replication configurations and Catalyst copy jobs (the datapath VIFs). You will not know what these addresses are until the HP service engineer has configuredthe network for you. The HP service engineer will leave you with a record of these addresses afterinstallation and you can also use the CLI (command line interface) to display them.

NOTE: The number of IP addresses required varies according to the template selected, as doesthe number of physical ports required. These numbers are not identical. Please check the tables inRecommended versus required IP addresses (page 19) and Number of physical ports for eachtemplate (page 21) to ensure that you have allocated sufficient for your networking requirements.

Supported network configurations (templates)Network ports are bonded to ensure high availability. (But there is no network bonding between1Gb and 10Gb ports.)The optimum configuration is to use the 10GbE ports for data (NAS shares and Catalyst stores)and all replication traffic, and the 1GbE ports for the B6000 Management Console. However, thisrequires two sub-nets and may not be available to all users.Five network configurations are supported and configured using one of the supplied networktemplates, illustrated on the following pages. You must decide which template you intend to useprior to installation.

Supported network bonding modesBonding modes are critical to any network configuration, so please be careful and take extra carechoosing which network bonding mode is the best choice for you connection. The five networkconfigurations each have default bonding modes, which may be re-configured at installation bythe HP Support specialist.Three bonding modes are supported:• Mode 1 (Active/Backup)

This is the most simple bonding mode; it allows network traffic via one active port only andrequires no specific extra switch configuration. It is recommended for simple network

connections; if the active network link fails then traffic moves to the backup port. It is used asthe default bonding mode for Templates 1, 3, 4 and 5.

• Mode 4 (IEEE 802.3ad Dynamic Link Aggregation)This bonding mode is also known as LACP and requires a special external switch configuration.It provides a link aggregation solution, increasing the bond physical bandwidth but can onlywork if all the ports in the bond are connected to one switch or switches joined by an interswitchlink. It is recommended when :

◦ The customer wants to increase throughput to the StoreOnce appliance

◦ Trunks between switches on the customer network already use LACP mode

The LACP protocol only works when it is configured on both ends of the physical connection.Please refer to your switch documentation for information on LACP configuration.

• Mode 6 (Active Load Balancing)This mode provides a load balance solution. It does not require specific external switchconfiguration, but does require the switch to allow ARP negotiation. It can be used in a 2–switchconfiguration. However, in some environments ARP packet negotiation may be disabled withinthe network infrastructure, so this mode may not be appropriate. This is the default bondingmode for Template 2.

NOTE: It is recommended that network switches have their Spanning Tree protocol configurationenabled before connecting the StoreOnce appliance.

Gateway considerationsWhen the network is configured, you are prompted to provide an IP address for a default gateway,which will be used to route management and data traffic to and from an external network. Twoof the templates support customer sites with two sub-nets and allow you to route data traffic on onenetwork and management on the second. For software revision 3.3.0 and greater, for thesetemplates you are given the opportunity to provide the IP address of a second gateway and specifywhich type of traffic it should take.There are up to three choices when configuring the network (using the StoreOnce CLI):

• No external gateways: If the customer wants to use the HP StoreOnce B6200 Backup Systemin a totally isolated network environment, they should not configure an external gateway (theHP support engineer will simply skip this step during configuration)

• One external gateway: This is the standard configuration with templates 2, 3 and 5, wheredata and management traffic are routed to the same subnet, so only one external gateway isrequired. When used with templates 1 and 4, the customer must select which subnet (data ormanagement) will have the ability to communicate with the external gateway.

• Two external gateways (applies to templates 1 and 4 only and for software revision 3.3.0and greater): This configuration allows both management and data subnets to communicatewith the external network. The IP addresses of the two gateways are provided during thenetwork configuration. The customer must select whether data or management traffic will usethe 'default' gateway.

NOTE: In this context, 'default' is purely a mechanism to allow the user to specify a gateway forone type of traffic; the second gateway is automatically used for the other type of traffic.

Some examples

• Customer has a 10GbE and a 1GbE network and only wants data to be accessible remotely:Use Template 1, but configure one gateway only to the 10GbE network for data

• Customer has a 10GbE and a 1GbE network and wants both data and management to beaccessible remotely: Use Template 1 and configure two gateways. Decide whether data ormanagement should use the 'default' gateway.

• Customer has a 10GbE or a 1GbE network only and wants data and management to beaccessible remotely: Use Template 2, 3 or 4, as appropriate and configure one gateway.

• Customer has a 10GbE or a 1GbE network only and does not want data or management tobe accessible remotely: Use Template 2, 3 or 4, as appropriate and do not configure agateway.

NOTE: For software revision 3.3.0 and greater: if the customer wants to have only two 1GbEnetwork connection from each node in a couplet to their Ethernet switches, they should use Template5 instead of Template 2 in the above examples.

IP address rangeThe total number of IP addresses that you require depends upon the template that you select (andits implementation of physical ports and VIF addresses), and the number of couplets that you haveinstalled. In the following examples you will find the recommended number of IP addresses. For amore detailed explanation of VIF addresses and how IP addresses are assigned across couplets,see Understanding VIF addresses (page 13).

IMPORTANT: As long as the recommended number of IP addresses is allocated during the networkconfiguration process, the B6000 Backup System will automatically assign IP addresses for allnodes in the system when the network is initially configured or additional couplets are added. Ifyou do not supply the recommended number and subsequently expand your system, you will needto reconfigure the network and also reconfigure the addresses used for backup and replicationtargets.

Reserved IP address rangeThe HP StoreOnce Backup System uses the 10.154.x.x ip range for its internal network. This meansthat this IP address range is not available for the customer's network. It may cause conflict andunpredictable results if a customer network uses the 10.154.x.x ip range.

Template 1, uses 10 GbE and 1 GbE sub-netsTemplate 1 supports users who have a 10GbE network and a 1GbE network and wish to useseparate sub-nets for data and management. The gateway must be in the same sub-net as thenetwork that is being used to connect to remote sites. This is normally the data path network.The default bonding mode for this template is Mode 1 on both sub-nets.The recommended IP address range is 25 in total: 16 contiguous on the data sub-net; 1 + 8contiguous on the management sub-net.

NOTE: When using a 10GbE network, you must provide the correct SFPs for your environment.They are not supplied with the product.

Template 5, uses 1GbE network onlyFor software revision 3.3.0 and greater: Template 5 supports users who want to have only two1GbE network connections from each node in a couplet to their Ethernet switches. The same networkis used for data and management. It is primarily for customers who only use VTL as their backuptargets and do not use StoreOnce Catalyst stores or NAS CIFS/NFS shares. VTL replication jobswill still run over the Ethernet connections.The default bonding mode for this template is Mode 1 on both sub-nets.The recommended IP address range is 17 in total: 1 for management and 16 contiguous for data.

Recommended versus required IP addressesAs long as sufficient IP addresses are allocated during the network configuration process, theB6000 Backup System will automatically assign IP addresses for all the nodes in the system whenthe network is initially configured and, subsequently, when additional couplets are added.If sufficient IP addresses are not allocated, the automatic IP address assignment process cannot beperformed. When additional couplets are added, it will be necessary to redo the networkconfiguration process and allocate a range sufficient for all IPs required by the system. Any IPaddresses that have been assigned to the nodes during the previous configuration will not bepreserved. Even if you enter the same physical IP addresses, the Virtual Data IP addresses willchange and you will need to reconfigure backup targets and replication. (You will not lose anydata.)The following table summarizes the combined physical (P) and virtual (V) IP address requirementsfor all possible couplet configurations. Ideally, you should always assign enough IP addresses tocater for expansion, namely the values in the 4 couplet column.

Physical Ethernet connection requirementsPlease be aware of the following when preparing the network environment.

• All network ports are bonded to ensure high availability in the event of failover. However,incorrect cabling can cancel out the high availability infrastructure of the product.

• There should be two switches for each network to which you are connecting.

• For EACH bonded pair of cables, the first cable should be connected to Switch 1; the othercable should be connected to Switch 2.

• If using separate subnets for data and management (templates 1 and 4) and multiple externalswitches are used, these switches must support a Multi Chassis Link Aggregation protocol thatis compatible with the rest of the customer’s network switch infrastructure. • When using a 10GbE network, you must provide the correct SFPs for your environment. Theyare not supplied with the product.

4 Fibre Channel connectionThe physical FC connection to the HP B6200 Backup System is straightforward; there are four FCports per node. However, care must be taken to ensure there is no single point of failure in switchor fabric zoning that will negate the failover capabilities of the HP B6200 Backup System and itsautonomic restart ability.

NOTE: Only two ports are available when using software revisions prior to 3.9.0. Upgradingto 3.9.0 or greater, will automatically give you functionality to use all four ports.

Conformance to the following rules will help to ensure successful failover

• Fibre Channel switches used with HP StoreOnce must support NPIV. The preferred topologyuses NPIV (N_Port ID Virtualisation) Direct attach (private loop) and direct attach (point topoint) topologies are not supported. For a full list see http://www.hp.com/go/ebs.

• Use WWPN zoning (rather than port based). This keeps the backup/restore environmentsimple and less susceptible to the effects of changing or problematic SANs.

• Ensure that there are two switches in each fabric.

• In a single fabric configuration ensure the equivalent FC ports from each B6200 node in acouplet are presented to the same FC switch.

• In a dual fabric configuration ensure the equivalent FC ports from each B6200 node in acouplet are presented to the same fabric. They should present to separate switches within thefabric.

• Ensure the D2D diagnostic device WWNs (these will be seen in the switch name server andare associated with the physical ports) are not included in any fabric zones and, therefore,not presented to any hosts.

Connecting the Fibre Channel cables (optional)If VTL library emulation is required, the FC cables are connected to the FC ports: the exampleshows FC port 1 and FC port 2 in use on each node.

NOTE: Only the two ports shown on the illustration below are available when using softwarerevisions prior to 3.9.0.

5 Preparing for installationThe customer should ensure that a keyboard and monitor are available for use as a managementconsole during the initial configuration stage.

NOTE: HP does not recommend using a KVM installed in the rack because this will cause problemswhen a second couplet is added. In a fully expanded rack there is no space for locating a KVMwithin the rack.

The customer should also complete the checklists in the rest of this document and present them tothe HP service engineers when they arrive to install and configure the system.All other tools are provided by the HP service specialist.

change this via the GUI or CLI. Any password change applies to both the GUI and StoreOnceCLI.

• Operator: This is the default account for a local user whose access will be restricted tomonitoring and viewing StoreOnce. It provides limited access to the GUI and StoreOnce CLI.The initial user name and password is Operator and operator, but the user may change thisvia the GUI or StoreOnce CLI.

It is good practice to determine what other users will be required and what access to the systemthey should have as part of the planning process. In particular, will the HP StoreOnce Backupsystem be added to an Active Directory Domain? With StoreOnce software v3.9.0 and later, it ispossible to add external users or groups that contain AD domain users.

The AC power input for the HP B6200 BackupSystem has a duplex PDU structure, which enables the entire rack to remain powered on if poweris removed from one of the two power distribution panels.Prior to installation you should confirm that you have specified the correct PDU for your geographicallocation and connector type and that you have sufficient power outlets. See Power/PDUrequirements (page 9).
