Warum fasziniert Dich Back-country Freeskiing?Ich wuchs als Snowboarder auf und startete 1999 Skifahren während ich in Jackson Hole lebte. Während dieser Zeit nahm ich Backcountry immer ernster. Das Jahr 1999 war ein Wendepunkt in Jackson. Die Ski Region öffnete ihr Sidecountry ohne weitere Restriktionen – was vor diesem Jahr in Amerika nicht normal war. Why is backcountry freeskiing fascinating for you?I grew up as a snowboarder, started also skiing while living in Jackson Hole in 1999 and got serious about t h e b a c k c o u n t r y d u r i n g t h a t timeframe. 1999 was a watershed year in Jackson, when the ski area started allowing unrestricted open-gate access to their sidecountry—which was not common in the United States before that year. It acted as a catalyst for many other American ski areas to start allowing open-gate sidecountry access and was an exciting time to be in Jackson. The backcountry is fascinating to me because of the endless amount of rideable terrain that can be accessed if you leave the ski area. In addition

Was würdest Du Anfängern im Backcountry empfehlen?Realisiere, dass es akzeptable Regeln/Etiketten gibt und respektiere d ie Er fahrungen während Du verstehen lernst, dass die Ent-scheidungen, die du triffst Leben oder Tod bedeuten können. Lerne alles über Lawinen, Entscheidungen zu t re f fen , Gruppendynamik und verstehe, dass es ein lebens-länglicher Lernprozess ist, der dir Sicherheit im Backcountry gibt. Mit diesem Wissen und gelebter Kultur haben wir trotzdem alle Freunde oder Menschen verloren, die mit aller Vorsicht im Backcountry unterwegs. In Ehren für sie und ihren zurück-gelassenen Lieben, unterstreiche ich immer, dass es keine Schande ist bei u n s i c h e r e n V e r h ä l t n i s s e n nachzugeben oder gar umzudrehen und an einem anderen Tag die Tour zu gehen.

the slower pace, the aesthetic beauty, the relative lack of crowds and the self-sufficient wilderness experience of touring all creates this visceral experience that sustains me in daily life.

What advice would you give beginners who are starting with backcountry freeskiing? Realize there is an acceptable etiquette and respect the experience, while also understanding that the decisions you make can be life or death so learn about avalanche education, decision making, group dynamics and understand that learning about backcountry safety is a a lifelong process. In this culture, we’ve all had friends or people we’ve ridden with previously die in the backcountry and, in honor of them and the loved ones they’ve left behind, I always emphasize that there is no shame in backing down during uncertain conditions or backing off the throttle to ride another day.

Für das Snowboarden sind es Lucas Debari, Temple Cummins, Travis Rice, Scott Newsome und Jeremy Jones. Ebenfalls beeinflussten mich Mike Douglas, Fitz Cahall und Jordan Manley bis hin zu den besten Ski Journalisten wie Matt Hansen, Derek Taylor, Les Anthony, John Stifter und Megan Michelson sowie auch die Fotografen Grant Gunderson und Garrett Grove.

How long have you been back-country freeskiing? Backcountry touring and split-boarding since 1999.

Who are the freeskiers who had an inspir ing inf luence on your career?In the Northwest, skiers who had an inspiring influence on my career are Zack Giffin, Rene Crawshaw, Adam U, Eric Pollard, Andy Mahre, Pep Fujas and Kye Peterson. For snowboarding, it’s Lucas Debari, Temple Cummins, Travis Rice, Scott Newsome and Jeremy Jones. Also, the storytellers, from Mike Douglas, Fitz Cahall and Jordan Manley to skiing’s best writers such as Matt Hansen, Derek Taylor, Les Anthony, John Stifter and Megan Michelson as well as photographers such as Grant Gunderson and Garrett Grove.

Why is backcountry freeskiing fascinating for you?Being out in the mountains with friends, skiing great terrain with soft snow, and being responsible for ourselves is much better than fighting the masses in ski areas.

What advice would you give beginners who are starting with backcountry freeskiing? Learn as much as you can about avalanches.   Don't listen to music out there either, keep your spacing, watch your safe zones, and don't be afraid to back off a line if the red flags are there.   Leave your ego at the

Warum fasziniert Dich Back-country Freeskiing?Ich habe richtigen Spaß an allem was mit Backcountry Freeskiing zu tun hat. Als erstes und auch am meisten liebe ich die Plätze, an denen man fahren kann. Für mich gibt es nichts Schöneres als an einem sonnigen Tag draußen zu sein in den Bergen. Ebenfalls mag ich die Heraus-forderungen, die dahinter stecken. Vo m F i n d e n d e r R o u t e , d i e Schneebeurteilung, bis hin zum Gelände, alles was mit Backcountry zu tun hat ist eine Herausforderung aber auch großer Spaß für mich.

Why is backcountry freeskiing fascinating for you?I enjoy pretty much everything about backcountry freeskiing. First and foremost I love the places you get do it in. For me there’s nothing better than being out in the mountains on sunny day. I also really like the challenges it poses. From route finding, to snow evaluation, to the terrain, everything about going into the backcountry is challenging, but for me it’s also very fun.

Was würdest Du Anfängern im Backcountry empfehlen?Ich würde sagen mach Lawinenkurse und lerne wie man die Ausrüstung richtig verwendet, besonders das Sendegerät. Vorbereitet zu sein und zu wissen was man im Backcountry macht ist das aller wichtigste. Es kann dein Leben retten und erlaubt dir auch mehr Spaß zu haben.

Wie lange fährst Du bereits im Backcountry?Ich startete vor 16 Jahren mit Freeskiing und hoffe so lange fahren zu können bis zu dem Tag, an dem ich sterbe.

Welcher Freeskier hat Deine Karriere am meisten beeinflusst?Chris Benchetler, Pep Fujas, Eric Pollard, Sage Cattabriga-Alosa, Sean Pettit, Eliel Hindert, etc.

What advice would you give beginners who are starting with backcountry freeskiing? I would say take an avalanche class and learn how to use all your gear, especially your transceiver. Being prepared and knowing what you’re d o i n g w h e n g o i n g i n t o t h e backcountry is very important. It can save your life and allow you to have more fun.

How long have you been back-country freeskiing?I’ve been freeskiing for 16 years and I hope to do until the day I die.

Warum fasziniert Dich Back-country Freeskiing?Weil es sich anfühlt, als ob die kompletten Berge aus Trampolinen bestehen würden und wenn es dann noch keine Spuren gibt, kannst du richtig über den Boden schweben. Es ist als ob man fliegen würde.

Was würdest Du Anfängern im Backcountry empfehlen?Lerne alles darüber, damit Du am Leben bleibst im Backcountry, erst dann geh los und fahre Ski.

Why is backcountry freeskiing fascinating for you?Because it feels like the whole mountain is covered in trampolines and when there's no tracks you can just float right above the ground. It's like flying.

What advice would you give beginners who are starting with backcountry freeskiing? Learn everything there is to know about keeping yourself alive in the backcountry, then go ski as hard as you can.

Wie lange fährst Du bereits im Backcountry?Ich habe mit vier oder fünf Jahren mit dem Skifahren begonnen und fuhr Rennen bis ich 17 Jahre alt war. Aber ich wollte immer das Training für Freeskiing tauschen. Je nachdem wie man also zählt fahre ich 24 oder 12 Jahre im Backcountry.

Welcher Freeskier hat Deine Karriere am meisten beeinflusst?Als ich jünger war wollte ich immer wie JP Auclair oder Seth Morrison sein. Aber ich schaute ab dem Moment, als ich zum ersten Mal vom Backcountry ergriffen wurde bei allen und saugte alles auf wie neuen Tricks oder völlig neue Stilrichtungen. Es war eine Kombination aus dem Versuch herauszufinden was andere machten mit dem Heranwachsen in Alyeska, das mich beeinflusste so Ski zufahren wie ich es heute mache.

How long have you been back-country freeskiing?I started skiing at four or five, and raced until I was seventeen, but I would always like to skip training to go freeskiing. So 24 years or 12 depending on how you look at it. 

Who are the freeskiers who had an inspir ing inf luence on your career?When I was younger it was always JP Auclair and Seth Morrison that I wanted to be like. But I watched everyone, when I was first getting into it there was always a new trick, or a totally new style and I absorbed all of it.   It was a combo of trying to figure out how to do what they did, and growing up skiing at Alyeska that influenced me to ski the way that I do.

Die Serpentinen des zweispurigen Mount-Baker-Highways schlängeln sich durch dichten Wald, bevor sie zügig vom tosenden Nooksack River 1.000 Höhenmeter durch alte, moosbedeckte Waldbestände bis zur Baumgrenze hinaufziehen. Im Winter ist die Schnellstraße ein schmaler Korridor zwischen Schneewänden, die mit zunehmender Höhe bis auf sechs Meter und mehr anwachsen können. Anders als die sicheren Straßen in die Urlaubsgebiete, wo Schilder nach dem Ortseingang Apartments und Geschäfte bewer-ben, endet dieser Highway als Sack-gasse, und der Cascades-Nationalpark wie das Wildnisgebiet des Mount Baker setzen dem motorisierten Zugang ein abruptes Ende.

Genau hier liegt eines der besten mit Lift erreichbaren Sidecountry-und Backcountry-Gebiete Nordamerikas. Am Mount Baker beginnen und enden alle Geschichten mit dem Schnee. Die glücklichen Skifahrer, die den weltrekordverdächtigen Winter 1998/1999 erlebten, als 30 Meter Schnee vom Himmel fielen, sprechen in fast religiöser Ehrfurcht von der „Mount-Baker-Dreifaltigkeit“ – pazifischer Feuchtigkeit, dem Zusammentreffen von Sturmbahnen und der perfekten Topografie für orografischen Auftrieb. Diese Besonderheit hat Auswirkungen: Im letzten März begrub eine extrem große Lawine Hunderte von Backcountry-Pfaden bis zu fünf Meter unter sich, zerstörte einige Waldstriche, hinterließ auf einem halben Kilometer Länge und bis auf 30 Meter Tiefe einen Trümmerhaufen und überrollte einen Teil des Skigebiets.

The Mt. Baker Highway is a serpentine two-lane that flows, at first, through dense forest and then impatiently rises from the raging Nooksack River, switch-backing 1,000 vertical meters to treeline through stands of ancient, moss-covered old-growth forest. In winter, this dead-end highway is a hallway, with snowbanks that grow to more than six meters as the elevation steadily climbs. Unlike safety corridors to destination resorts, where the first signs of arrival are condo turnoffs and convenience stores, Baker’s access is a timbered rise to the end of the road where the North Cascades National Park and Mt. Baker Wilderness Area abruptly cut off all mechanized access.

This is the epicenter of some of the best lift-accessed sidecountry and backcountry lines in North America. For those who haven’t visited Mt. Baker explanations always begin and end with the subject of snow. The lucky who skied the worldrecord year season of ’98-’99 – when 30 meters of snow fell from the sky – speak with something akin to religious reverence of the holy trinity: wet Pacific moisture, the sweet spot of the storm track and the ideal topography for orographic lift. It is a zone of consequence. Last season, a massive March avalanche covered hundreds of backcountry tracks, left a five meters crown, leveled a patch of forest, created a ½-kilometer debris pile more than 30 m eters deep and overran a portion of the lower ski area.
