With a population of 400,000, Mazatlan is situated on the west side of Mexico and is a key tourist destination. As is the case with most important destinations around the world, what is visible to a tourist only represents a small fraction of the reality of that particular community. Behind the sprawling resorts and the beautiful historic buildings exists a tremendous need for orphan care.

There are nine children’s homes registered with the Children’s Services Department. Each home was birthed out of a desire to serve the orphan child, but the directors face continual obstacles. The homes have little capacity to receive new children due to the limited staffing and scarce financial resources. We identified the need for more training in how to deal with trauma and attachment issues in orphan children. Since 2011, when our ministry was first introduced to the needs in Mazatlan, we have felt a call from God to serve orphaned children in this region. Our desire is to be a part of the story that God is writing in the lives of orphaned children in Mazatlan.

The challenge is great but we stand on God’s promises of provision for the orphan. We are fueled by the hope and promise of a God who never tires in His relentless pursuit of the orphan child. Our work is founded in the Biblical call to care for orphans. In hundreds of scriptural passages, the message is clear and consistent. Christians are called to defend and care for the orphan:

Isaiah 1:17 Learn to do good; Seek justice, Reprove the ruthless, Defend the orphan, Plead for the widow.

We affirm God’s scriptural promises of faithfulness, care and provision for orphans. We seek to be an advocate for orphaned children in Mazatlan, recognizing that without a strong advocate they will likely suffer from oppression, abuse and injustice. As we come alongside vulnerable children, we are eager to see how God begins to transform hearts, renew lives and rewrite futures.

Sincerely,

Gabriel VelascoBack2Back Mazatlan Director

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Floreser serves as a shelter for teenage girls who have been abused, abandoned, or trafficked. This home is the only one of its kind in the state of Sinaloa.

In 2009, Floreser was launched by a group of women from Mazatlan, who saw the need for a safe place for at-risk girls. One of the women opened up her home to start the orphanage, a facility that now has capacity to house up to fifteen girls. Once they reach the age of eighteen, they are invited to move to apartment-style living next door. If the girls choose to continue at Floreser in the apartments, they are provided with a sustainable job at a local coffee shop, which allows them the opportunity to earn a college degree and develop vital life skills through independent living. Creating space for each girl to heal and develop an individual sense of identity is crucial.

Twelve-year old Perla has lived in Floreser for two years now. Since her arrival, Perla’s life has changed drastically. Floreser has helped provide an education for Perla and she now receives nutritious balanced meals. Not only has this home been a safe refuge for her by meeting her physical needs, but for the first time in her life, she has had the opportunity to address her emotional needs. Perla is able to work through the painful experiences from her past through counseling with a professional psychologist. Perla is growing stronger, now that her spiritual, physical, educational, emotional and social needs are now met. Hope is rising as she realizes that with dedication and perseverance, she can pursue her dreams.

LOCAL CHURCH INVOLVEMENT The local church is answering the call to

Through the Hope Education Program, Back2Back offers the orphaned children we

serve an opportunity to pursue their educational goals while living in a family-setting

environment, similar to foster care. For many of the children, this is the first time they

have ever experienced a healthy, nurturing family life or had an opportunity to learn

vital life skills. Students may enroll in the program from the start of junior high school

through their college graduation. During this process, they are mentored, provided with an

education, and encouraged to pursue their dreams so that they can become self-sustaining

individuals who give back to their community. This style of living enables us to provide

holistic orphan care through Back2Back’s 5-Point Child Development Plan, meeting the

spiritual, physical, educational, emotional and social needs of each child. Children who have

access to education will become the leaders of tomorrow, forever shaping the direction

of their country. We invest in the future of each child we serve, enabling them to reach

their academic goals through scholarships, tutoring and educational support, that they

might ultimately break the cycle of poverty and become sustainable adults who give back

to their community.

Articulate, outgoing and personable –

Carmen exudes confidence. She loves

people and enjoys helping care for the

younger children at the orphanage she

calls home. In her spare time, she dances

Fifteen-year old Carmen is no different.

She arrived at the children’s home after

fleeing an unsafe situation in another

We are excited to partner with the local church in Mazatlan. As an orphan care ministry, we realize partnership with the local church is crucial. Without their support, we would be fighting an endless battle.

Our goal is to offer resources to local churches, volunteers and children’s homes that they might not otherwise be able to access. Our hope is that by supporting the community in this practical way, we will strengthen people within the community and ultimately share the hope of Jesus. To that end, a multi-purpose space will be made available to our ministry partners in the community. Children’s homes will be invited to use the space for spiritual retreats for the children. We will provide child development training to local volunteers, churches, and children’s home workers through seminars and resources to address issues such as attachment and trauma. In an effort to provide preventative orphan care measures, we will hold ongoing training sessions to equip local churches to minister to at-risk children within their congregations. Additionally, the property will feature mission trip guest housing, a soccer field, basketball court, two outdoor structures (palapas) for events and activities, six Hope Education Program homes, seven staff homes, and a therapy pool to be used to serve a home with children who have special needs.

In the future, we foresee a Hope Education Program for children who were raised in an institutional setting. We envision a foster care program in Mazatlan that will allow orphaned children to live in homes, experiencing a healthy family life. Our goal is to continually receive training to best serve the children that we work with, so that we can provide individualized care for each child we serve through Back2Back’s 5-Point Child Development Plan.

Our prayer is that the local church would respond to God’s call to care for the orphan, by taking a stand where God calls them to be. The answer for the needs of the orphan in Mazatlan, we believe, is found in the unity of the body of Christ.

ENVISIONING THE PROMISE

ENVISIONING THE PROMISE

Alejandra is a recent high school graduate who

served as an intern with Back2Back Mazatlan. Her

involvement with us began last year when she

worked as a local volunteer tutoring at one of the

children homes we serve. Since then, God has grown

her passion for the orphan and used her to recruit

members of her church to volunteer alongside her

in a weekly tutoring program at the Salvation Army

Children’s Home. Alejandra has been inspired as she

has watched God’s hand at work in her city. Her faith

has been strengthened as she has experienced the

joy of being used by God to bring restoration in the

hearts and lives of children in need. This year has

been a life-changing adventure, as Alejandra has

been a part of the change she wants to see in this city.
