I am proud to report that we are coming off a very strong
year and are looking forward with energy, enthusiasm and
optimism. The possibilities and potential that lie ahead
are infinite.
Before propelling forward, I would like to express my
gratitude to all who made the 2017 – 18 school year
a resoundingly successful chapter in the history of The
John Carroll School. From the opening of school through
graduation and final exams, our dedicated faculty and
staff were committed to the education and well-being of
our students. Our parents, families, alumni and network
of advocates worked as partners to support John Carroll
and place our students at the center of all we do. And
our students infused our campus with vitality and promise
every day. Together, we stand strong, focused and
committed to a vibrant path forward for John Carroll.
Like this issue of Connections, the John Carroll community
is rich and replete with stories that exhibit our faith,
reflect our culture, give meaning to our accomplishments
and illustrate the remarkable impact of our nearly 9,000
alumni. Indeed, John Carroll has a story to tell, and every
Patriot has his/her unique story. We will be bringing you
more of these stories in the months ahead.
The forging of our future is an unending journey. Our
students are graduating in a time of rapid and dynamic
change. Innovation and technology are the norms, not
the anomalies. Our Patriots will work and live in a diverse,
global environment unlike any before. Thus, it is imperative
that our course of study and instructional methods evolve
to prepare our graduates for the future. We are boosting
our STEAM offerings, expanding our St. Joseph Program
and welcoming our inaugural class of Carroll Scholars.
As part of our overall investments in modern learning
environments, renovations continue to upgrade our
science labs. Students will begin to see subtle changes
in our library as it evolves to a more functional Media
Center. We are also taking great care to strengthen our
culture of civility and security. Recently, The John Carroll
School became a Civility Alliance Partner, with the Harford
County Public Library, as part of the campaign to practice
respect, restraint and responsibility throughout the county.
And as promised, we are on track with the campus security
investments announced in the spring. I’d like to especially
thank our Parent Association, whose generosity has been
so vital to our progress in this area.
In the year ahead, our academic excellence will again
be complemented by an extraordinary showcase of talent
on our stage and in our studios. I encourage you to take
in our students’ performances and displays. You will be
astounded by their talents. Equally impressive, our Patriots
will again compete against traditional rivals and regional
opponents in 21 varsity sports. There’s nothing like an
afternoon game or an evening under the lights to boost
school spirit.
As we move forward, I welcome all our new Patriots,
their parents and our new faculty, staff and coaches to
the community named for Archbishop John Carroll – a
Catholic leader and true American Patriot. Together with
our returning Patriots, families and alumni, we will share
the milestones in the years to come and build the future
of the school. And to our most recent graduates, the
memorable Class of 2018, I wish you the best of luck,
courage and confidence as you build your path forward.
Again, thanks to all for your continued support. I am
looking forward to working together to make 2018 – 19
another great year for John Carroll.

Good Luck, Class of 2018! Congratulations to our newest alumni!
Representatives of the class of 2018 met with
Archbishop William Lori in May prior to his serving
as celebrant for the Baccalaureate Mass.
John Carroll’s 51st Commencement took place
on May 26, 2018, at 9:00 a.m. It was an
exciting, proud and joyful moment in our
history. So many stories started here — we
can’t wait to see what this class of Patriots

Choosing JC was the best decision I have ever made. It has become my second home, and my experiences being part of this community have helped to shape my character and given me a career goal. I want to take the love and many blessings I have received as a Patriot and give them back to the greater community.
Congratulations to this year’s Black & Gold winners, Chesca
Basilio and Ryan Griffin! Both students received awards at the
Senior Project Showcase and were honored again at the Senior
Awards Breakfast. Ryan received an appointment to West Point
while Chesca is pursuing a career helping those with disabilities,
while attending the University of Delaware.

Fashion Show — It may have been postponed by weather, but when it finally came to pass it was a blast! The seniors really strutted their stuff and had an “ab fab” time.
March Madness — This all-new campaign to support the Annual Fund was a slam dunk! Great job by the sophomores (class of 2020) on taking home the title by raising the most money. They enjoyed a pizza party and dress-down day as reward for their efforts. Thank you to everyone who participated!
Grandparents Day — It was another full house of Nanas and Pops for our annual Grandparents Day on April 18th. Our guests enjoyed lunch, a musical performance and best of all, an afternoon spending time with their favorite Patriots!

Patriot Pride
JC welcomed the first class of “Carroll Scholars,”
enrolled in the brand new Archbishop John
Carroll Scholarship Program, at a breakfast
in March. The 28 new members of the class
of 2022 will be the first eligible to earn AP
Capstone diplomas, which requires taking the
year-long AP Seminar and AP Research classes
plus four additional AP courses of their choice.
John Carroll is the first Catholic school in the
state to offer this diploma distinction.
JC Bids Farewell to Two Beloved PatriotsOn Wednesday, June 6, 2018, The John Carroll School community
gathered together to celebrate and honor the legacy of Mr. Gary
Scholl who was retiring as a full-time employee after 44 years!
Over the years, Gary has served The John Carroll School as a teacher,
coach, Dean, Assistant Principal, and even two times as an Interim
Principal. Gary started working at JC as a history teacher back in 1974.
During his tenure, Gary won numerous championships as a wrestling coach
and served on a number of vital committees for the school. The Morning
Star PowWow, created by Gary nearly 20 years ago to share his love of
the Native American culture, has become one of the largest gatherings
of indigenous people on the East Coast. His impact on both the students
and the staff of our school and the community has been undeniable.
Known for his wisdom and student-centered approach for learning,
Gary will be missed by all. Fortunately his legacy will continue as
Gary will be continuing to teach Anthropology part time and work
in a mentoring role with younger teachers and coaches.
On behalf of the entire JC Community, we want to wish Mr. Scholl
an enjoyable retirement from full time work and thank him for all
his contributions and for being a true Patriot.
For more than three decades, Mrs. Carol Heflin has served
and cared for John Carroll students and their families.
Over 31 years ago, Mrs. Heflin started her JC journey when she was
hired as the Director of Enrollment by long-time John Carroll Director
of Guidance, Mr. Bernie Mullin. Carol eventually found her way to
the Guidance Department and faithfully served our students and
their families for many years as both a guidance counselor and
the department chair. In addition to these roles, Carol taught
Math early in her JC career and was very active in the Music
Ministry program for many years. She also spent many summers
dedicated to JC’s Summer Enrichment Program for incoming
freshmen. Recently, Carol made tremendous contributions to
developing our St. Joseph’s program to ensure all students
receive the services they need to be successful.
Last spring, Carol received not one, but two well-deserved awards.
She received the Ann Drummey Service Award in recognition for
her constant service to the school, and she was selected by
the students as the 2018 Educator of the Year for her tireless
dedication and commitment to John Carroll and each and
every one of her students. The John Carroll School community
is incredibly grateful for the many years of services given by
Mrs. Heflin and we wish her all the best in her retirement.

Charting New Courses As part of its focus on updating curriculum to reflect today’s modern
learning needs, JC is offering six new courses this year:
Two new AP courses, bringing the total of AP courses offered to 19,
with an additional 30 Honors level classes
AP Seminar. Our new Carroll Scholars will be starting off their voyage
towards earning their AP Capstone Diplomas by taking a very rigorous AP
Seminar class as their freshman year Social Studies. They will be asked
to analyze and evaluate information to craft and communicate evidence-
based arguments on topics ranging from History to Geography to Culture
and even modern day political issues. At the end of the year, students will
have a multi-faceted AP assessment which will include a written AP test,
an Individual Research-Based Essay and Presentation as well as Team
Project and Presentation.
AP Computer Science Principles. This course offers a multidisciplinary
approach to teaching the underlying principles of computation, including
aspects of programming, abstractions, algorithms, large data sets, the
internet, cybersecurity concerns and computing impacts. AP Computer
Science Principles also gives students the opportunity to use current
technologies to create computational artifacts for both self-expression
and problem-solving.
Two New FLEX (Financial Literacy & Entrepreneurial Exploration) Electives
Now, along with every student being
offered a course in Financial Literacy
sophomore year, students can also
choose from a host of business
electives. New courses in Marketing
and Accounting have been added
to existing classes that include
Intro to Entrepreneurial Studies,
Intro to Management, Business
Law and Economics.
Two New Health and Wellness Electives As JC continues to broaden its Health and Wellness offerings, students
can now select from two very practical and important courses:
Food and Nutrition. Students will explore the science of food and nutrition with
regards to health and wellness while also learning the importance of individual
choices, safety and meal preparation. Students will learn about integrative nutrition
along with dietary guidelines through classroom activities, documentaries, labs and
self-directed projects.
Strength and Conditioning. Students will learn about modern strength and
conditioning techniques then practice and apply them through class and
individual workouts. Students will be challenged to identify and work towards
their own fitness goals as well as recognize the important roles nutrition,
relationships and overall healthy choices play.
Program Spotlight: St. Joseph Program Expands 2018 – 19Since 1990, John Carroll has supported students
with documented learning differences by helping
them establish and work towards personal goals.
In 2015, the St. Joseph Program was formalized
to meet the growing needs of these students.
One of the key components of the program is
the Success Skills Class, which is open to all
freshmen and sophomores to make the transition
to high school go more smoothly. Classes are
limited to 10 students and offer tutoring as well
as customized strategies to improve skills in
organization, note-taking, researching, writing,
test-taking and more. For the upcoming year,
students in the program can look forward to:
• Upgraded spaces including a dedicated
testing room and a tutoring/discussion room
that will greatly enhance opportunities for
customized support.
• The addition of a new learning specialist, Kelly
Roiy, who has 10 years of experience and is
credited with building the DePaul Program at
Mount St. Joseph into a model for other schools.
Mrs. Ann Drummey leads the St. Joseph Program
with assistance from Dr. Paul Lazor. She says,
“This program has seen tremendous growth since
its inception and has evolved every year as we
have adapted its framework to stay on pace with
technology and the curriculum of other classes.
We are dedicated to helping each student realize
his or her personal best, and we are especially
excited for what 2018 – 19 will bring.”
The Arts at JC
The Spring Music Concert on April 13 featured beautiful performances by the Jazz Band, Rock Band and Orchestra along with the choral arts of Bella Voce, JC’s mixed a cappella choir.
The Memorial Concert on May 22 honored members of the military, past and present.
Fine Arts night on April 27 showcased exceptional exhibits of student artwork including paintings, drawings, ceramics and more.
A May Spring Dance Concert starred the talented dancers of John Carroll’s College Preparatory Dance Program and featured innovative and exciting choreography by Program Director Laura Ward-Moran and guest artist Amanda Thom Woodson.
In March, the renowned JC Theatre Department put on a spring production of Tarzan with a show-stopping set that was absolutely swinging! The show starred Ella Wilson ’18, daughter of Kristen Trail Wilson ’91 and Marty Wilson ’87, and Josh Robinson ’19, son of Melanie Meoli Robinson ’90.

year are able to experience the exceptional opportunities that
make John Carroll the unique, special place it is. In 2017 – 2018,
your generous donations allowed us to exceed our Annual Fund
goal and we couldn’t be prouder of our amazing community. From
the bottom of our hearts, thank you for making a difference in the
lives of our students and showing them what it means to be Once

HONOR ROLL OF DONORS
Gayle McAdams
Former John Carroll Vice Principal, pictured far left, during his John Carroll retirement
celebration in 2013
Following a distinguished career in the Carroll County public school system, Gayle
came to JC as a vice-principal and fulfilled many roles during the time he was at John
Carroll, from 2000–2009. In fact, Gayle contributed to so many different facets of
the school that upon his retirement his various duties were too much to be handled
by just one administrator and had to be spread out among multiple people. Known
for his meticulous preparation and organization (probably a holdover from his time
in the Navy), Gayle was also known for his professional demeanor as well as being
a friendly lunchroom companion. Gayle was also committed to Catholic schools
serving those in need, and during his time at JC he established a partnership with
Archbishop Borders school in East Baltimore. Gayle will be fondly remembered and
missed by all at JC who were fortunate enough to work with him.
