HomeworkStudents will have homework in the following areas:

• MATHA math homework packet will come home at the beginning of each math topic. Student are to do the front and back of the Topic page that is listed in their assignment book.

• SPELLING A Spelling Menu and Spelling/Phonics notebook will come home on Wednesdays. Choose 1 item from the menu.

• READING Students are expected to read for at least 15 minutes each night. Record a book read on the Monthly Recording Logs. Starting in October, two book reports will be given each month.

** Please check the assignment book each night to find the daily homework assignments.

Homework- Spelling

• Second grade spelling words will coincide with each of our weekly reading lessons in Journeys.

• A pretest will be given at the beginning of each week. Weekly spelling list will be in the Spelling/Phonics book and will have a tab at the top of the page.

• A spelling menu and the Spelling/Phonics notebook will come home on Wednesdays. Students can choose one item from the menu. If they choose a written activity from the menu, they can do it in the Spelling/Phonics notebook.

Homework- Reading• Take Home Books (October-May) - your child will pick a “right fit” book each day - a monthly recording sheet will be given at the beginning of the month and collected at the end

of each month - each night, have your child write the date & title

of a book they read on the recording sheet - parents initial recording sheet each night - 2 book reports will be assigned each month- You and your child choose which THB to use to complete the

reports

• If your child hands in their monthly recording sheet AND their 2 book reports at the end of each month, they will earn a coupon for a FREE personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut!!!

Reading Counts book- src.scholastic.com (NO www). • Quizzes must be taken at school (not at home).

• Book must be present when taking the quiz.• Quizzes can be taken during computer time & during class time (sign up sheet). • Individual Reading Goal’s will be set.

RAZ Kids

• A note will come home when students can begin using RAZ kids.

• This program can be used at home to help encourage children to read.

• There is a testing component that can be used at home.

ASTRO- Room 102’s Class Mascot

• A note and a schedule will come home in October telling all about Astro’s visit.

• Students should write about Astro’s adventures in the log that is sent home.

• Return Astro, his bag, and the journal to school the following Monday, clean and ready for the next student

Field TripsTwo field trips per year:

1. Winterthur Museum 2. Newlin Grist Mill Park

- Money will be collected in one sum for trips and bus fees.

- Before each field trip, a letter will come home with details about the trip. Information regarding chaperones will be included in this letter.

- Permission slip will be provided. Please sign and return.

Supplies • Thank you for sending in ALL the supplies!

The supplies really help to keep us organized and support our classroom community.

• We have an abundance of tissue (take home if you’d like).

• We tend to run out of pencils and hand soap half-way through the year. A note will come home requesting these supplies when needed.

• If you have access to plastic gloves and would like to donate them to our class, we can use them in the spring for our embryology unit.
