    High School Update

On the first Friday of the school

    year, Mr. Hilgendorff held a

    Welcome Back Assembly for

each of the grades. The focus

was to have students to think

about what makes a school great

    and what are the characteristics

    for guaranteed success. Mr. H

    emphasized the importance of

    respect, attendance, being pre-

    pared, and investing in oneself.

    Students responded well and the

year is off to a great start.

    The connections between school

and home are a vital piece of stu-

dent success. We had a great

    turnout for our annual open

    house held on Tuesday Septem-

ber 17, 2013. Parents were able

to meet with their childs teach-

ers to discuss the academic pro-

grams here at GHS and to meet

    our new Principal, Mr. Hilgen-

dorff. We encourage all of our

    parents to continue building the

    home to school connection by

    scheduling a parent /teacher con-

    ference on November 15th or

    26th.

    Faculty Accolades

Pictured above are Dr. Pam Agan-Smith, School Psychologist, and Rachel Anderson, High School Agri-

culture Teacher. Both faculty members are being recognized for their talents.

On Monday, September 30th at The College of Saint Rose, Dr. Pamela Agan-Smith, Psy. D. will be

awarded as the New York State Association of School Psychologists J Chapter nominee for Practitioner of

the Year Award. The J Chapter encompasses all school districts in Albany, Columbia, Rensselaer, Sche-

nectady and Schoharie Counties. Dr. Pam was up against hundreds of other local school psychologists but

beat them out due to her stellar work here at Greenville Middle/High School. Congratulations to Dr. Pam

    and her prestigious award!

LEXINGTON, KY. Rachel Anderson, Agricultural Educator in Greenville, NY, has been selected as the

2013 Region VI winner of the Teacher Mentor award given by the National Association of Agricultural

Educators. This award recognizes experienced agricultural educators who make the time to work with

early career educators in an effort to help them become successful teachers. By building positive relation-

ships between themselves and beginning teachers, mentors help increase retention rates within the profes-

sion as well as help those they mentor build successful programs.

Ms. Anderson competed against Teacher Mentor award winners from surrounding states for the oppor-

tunity to be named the 2013 Region VI NAAE Teacher Mentor. Regional winners will receive an expense

-paid trip to attend the 2013 NAAE convention. The NAAE Teacher Mentor award program is sponsored

by CEV Multimedia. NAAE is the professional organization in the United States for agricultural educa-

tors. It provides its nearly 8,000 members with professional networking and development opportunities,

professional liability coverage, and extensive awards and recognition programs. The mission of NAAE is

professionals providing agricultural education for the global community through visionary leadership,

advocacy and service. The NAAE headquarters are in Lexington, KY.

    DIBELS

    Response to Intervention guidelines from

New York State indicate that, in addition to

providing multi-tiered levels of support to

students, all students in grades K-4 must be

screened three times per year in reading.

Based on recommendations from the RTI

Research Group and approval by the QEC

and District, the DIBELS Next is being uti-

lized to screen all students in reading

grades K-5. DIBELS stands for Dynamic

Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills,

and is comprised of six measures that func-

tion as indicators of the essential skills that

every child must master to become a profi-

cient reader. The DIBELS was designed for

    use in identifying children experiencing

difficulty in the acquisition of basic early

literacy skills, in order to provide support

early and prevent the occurrence of later

    reading difficulties. Each student worked

1:1 with a trained professional from the

school to complete the brief (less than 10

minutes for each student) screening tasks

during the week of 9/9-9/13. Our expecta-

tion is that students will be assessed again

in January and in May in order to track stu-

dent progress and continue to identify stu-

dents in need of reading support.

  • You are invited to The Standardization of Americas Children, a presentation by Gail

    Richmond.

    October 7, 2013

    Greenville High School

The Greenville Elementary PTA and Greenville Middle School/High School PTSA are

pleased to be co-sponsoring a presentation by Gail Richmond entitled, The

Standardization of Americas Children. Ms. Richmond, an education advocate, retired

Greenville Central School District teacher, and former Greenville Faculty Association

President, will share her ideas on excessive standardized testing in schools. She will

discuss her thoughts on what is driving this testing craze and what significant adverse

effects it is already having on children and teachers.

This forum will give parents and other community members a chance to learn how they

can work to reverse these startling trends in education. Attendees will be more prepared

to help ensure that schools do not have to choose tests and test prep over fundamental

programming like art, music, library, small class sizes, and electives.

We invite parents, teachers, staff, and administration from area schools to this event on

October 7, 2013 from 7-9 pm in the Greenville High School auditorium (4976 Route 81,

    Greenville).

Please contact us with any questions.

    Sincerely,

Anne Rhoads, President, Greenville Elementary PTA
