The paperwork for the award didn’t come through until after the school year had ended, but Cheryl Mun-roe still got a big turnout for her ceremony. The longtime Encampment teacher was cheered by a crowd of around 150 Saturday morning when she was presented with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Smart/Maher Citizen-ship Education Award.

Many of those clapping were former pupils of Mun-roe, who has taught in En-campment for over three

decades. Munroe also spent nine years teaching in Wind River, said her friend and former Saratoga Sun editor Liz Wood. Altogether, Mun-roe has spent 43 years at the head of the classroom, and those efforts were rewarded over the weekend.

A VFW website says that the Smart Maher Award is presented to teachers “for their promotion of citizenship education in their class-rooms.” Munroe was nomi-nated by Platte Valley VFW Post No. 6125, and the award was presented to her by

former District Three Com-mander Rex Rudd.

Munroe teaches health as well as family and consumer science to students in sev-enth through twelfth grade at the Encampment School. Over the years, students in Munroe’s classes have writ-ten letters to veterans and active-duty military person-nel many time. Wood also said Munroe’s diligence in fundraising allowed many of her students to attend far-off events and activities.

Munroe teared up as she gave a brief speech follow-

ing the presentation of her award. She said she wouldn’t be there if it weren’t for the many amazing students she’d enjoyed getting to know over her career, and she was hap-py to call Encampment home even though her family is from the Wind River area.

Come fall, Munroe will be back at the chalkboard once again, teaching the children of her former students for an-other school year in the place that’s come to be her home.

Thanks to the support of Valley donors, students at area schools will be able to learn about astronomy, the universe and space explora-tion in a portable planetari-um which will take students on virtual reality journeys to the stars.

The planetarium is a fab-ric dome that is inflated by an air pump. At first glance, someone could mistake it for an inflatable bouncy house like the ones commonly seen at backyard children’s parties, but this inflatable structure is a teaching tool, Dave Rangitsch, Principal of Saratoga Elementary School (SES), said.

Inside the inflatable dome it is dark, and there is a special projection unit on the floor that projects im-ages and video onto the hemispherical ceiling of the inflatable dome. Speakers make the experience truly multimedia, akin to sitting in a miniature IMAX movie theater, with images visible from horizon to horizon in 360 degrees.

The company that makes the planetarium, Digitalis Education Solutions, Inc., of

Bremerton, Wash., has pro-vided several curricula that can be used with the plane-tarium. Students will have the opportunity to learn a dozen lessons, including constellations, the structure of galaxies that cannot be seen with the naked eye, Native American astrono-my and how other ancient cultures used the movement of the stars across the sky as a calendar.

The lessons are creat-ed in conjunction with the Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of Cali-fornia, Berkeley. According to its website, Lawrence Hall is the University of California’s public science center, and is dedicated to increasing the quality of science education. One way the institute does that is by helping develop science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) curricula such as the lessons taught in the planetarium.

The planetarium cost nearly $27,000, Rangitsch said. The funds to purchase the planetarium were most-ly raised from public dona-tions from businesses, orga-nizations and individuals in

the Valley, as well as grants from other agencies. The total raised was $27,500, according to Rangitsch.

The planetarium may be at SES now, but Rangitsch said it is intended to be used by students from every school in Carbon County School District No.2 (CCSD No. 2). There is a school in Laramie that has a similar planetarium, Rangitsch said, but it was difficult to send students to Laramie due to costs, time lost and winter weather.

It may be a little while before Valley students get to enjoy the new educational opportunities afforded by the planetarium, though. Rangitsch says he wants to have an open house to allow donors and members of the community to see the planetarium for themselves.

But he also said he needs to learn how to operate it himself. “There’s a dozen programs here, and I hav-en’t even figured out how we’re going to use them all,” he said while watching Neil Armstrong land on the moon inside the planetarium.

“I also have to get the speakers hooked up.”
