Welcome to the 5th Annual New Mexico Fire & EMS Expo, a combination of the State Fire Marshal’s 61st Annual Fire School, the New Mexico EMT Association’s Annual Conference and the New Mexico Fire Marshal’s Association’s training symposium.

This year’s theme is “Back to Basics”. For seven days emergency responders will be able to select from seven training tracks of classroom and hands-on courses, including a night session and a comprehensive water supply and delivery sub-track.

Join us as we salute our fallen emergency responders at the New Mexico 911 ceremony and honor our annual award recipients at the banquet. Show off your skills abilities at the Skills Competition and cookout and visit with the vendors to see the future’s new tools. Socialize with your fellow responders at the City barbeque and our evening of “Networking Under the Stars”.

We are confident you will have a positive experience and return home to better serve your communities.

Track: Fire

** All live fire & extrication courses require NFPA compliant PPE. If participating in live burns, mandatory clothing includes; a long-sleeved shirt (your conference shirt is sufficient) and long pants, made of natural fibers or Nomex. Natural fiber coveralls may be substituted for shirt and pants.

*** = The rope classes require gloves, eye protection and sturdy, above-ankle boots.

** Fire Behavior and Ventilation - (4 hrs) NMFTA Instructors Class #135 Location: Fire Grounds Burn Building This is a live fire evolution. If you have never been in a burning building, this is the class for you! We will take extra time discussing ventilation principles. We want you to get the most out of this class! This class is designed to demonstrate the stages of fire, thermal layering, and help you get a basic understanding of being in an IDLH environment. The novice firefighter will gain immense confidence in their PPE and learn how to apply the basic extinguishing techniques which are effective in a structure fire while the seasoned firefighter can witness, in a "relaxed, non-emergency" environment, the growth of a fire and the effects of various fire streams to the thermal layering and ultimately the control of the fire.

** Flammable Liquid Emergencies - NMFTA Instructors Class #145, #270, #450, #630 Location: Fire Grounds Flamms Pad This 4-hr live fire session is designed to instruct the student in the handling of different types of flammable and combustible liquid emergencies. Subjects include: Definitions, Physical Properties, Transportation, Water Use, Foam Application, and Fire Ground Evolutions. PPE must comply with NFPA Standards and must pass inspection by Academy Staff. Proper clothing must be worn under the student’s protective clothing.

** LPG Emergencies - NMFTA Instructors Class #150, #565 Location: Fire Grounds LPG Pad This 4-hr. live fire training session is designed to provide basic hands-on instruction in the handling of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Emergencies. Topics will cover Liquid Petroleum Gas Properties, Tank and Valve designs, Transportation of LPG and Fire Ground Evolutions to include Water Applications. CEU's = 2 hrs. Operations

Just Behavior Class #216 Location: Fire Grounds Burn Building ** Fire Behavioral Burn (4 hr.) This is a LIVE FIRE evolution. How often does a Firefighter get to just witness the stages of a fire as it develops? This class is designed to demonstrate the stages of fire, thermal layering, and provide a basic understanding of being in an IDLH environment. The novice firefighter will learn how to provide the basic extinguishing techniques which are effective in a structure fire while the seasoned firefighter can witness, in a "relaxed, non-emergency" environment, the growth of a fire and the effects of various fire streams to the thermal layering and ultimately the control of the fire.

Fire Extinguishers for the Novice Class #226, #420 Location: Flamms Pad

You are having a relatively good day and then you notice the fire on the stove! What will you do, What can you do? Just think how much could be saved if everyone knew how to properly use fire extinguishers! In this Hands On class, the student will learn about the classification of fire extinguishers, their operations and proper techniques. Instructors will explain and display various fire extinguishers, then it is your turn. While this is a "Live Fire" Evolution, PPE is a minimal requirement. Helmet, Gloves and Eye protection are required to participate in the hands on section but can be provided on scene.

Structural: Ventilation, Enter, Search (4 hrs) - NMFTA Instructors Class # 260 Location: Fire Grounds Burn Building This 4-hr. course is targeted for firefighters, drivers, and officers. Vent-Enter-Search, also referred to as VES, is an advanced search technique that yields great results. With VES, firefighters gain access into the structure and perform a search in an area that has a high probability of trapped victims. This is performed without the protection of a hose line and usually away from the area of fire attack. Is it hazardous? Yes, but done correctly, it may save lives. The tactic of VES has been in use for years and is now becoming normal operations for many departments. During this course, we will discuss the tactic of VES and its safe operation. Firefighters will then practice these new skills on the drill ground. Classroom setting for the first hour, and outside, hands-on training for the remainder of the course.

Firefighter Survival and PAR Class # 316 Location: Fire Grounds Burn Building On the fireground, firefighters consider trapped civilians and how likely they are to survive the fire under given circumstances. Many of us have trained in some way to understand this as a civilian's survivability profile, but how much do firefighters really think about their own fireground survival profile? Chances are not many of us have really done a gut self-check on where we truly stand and how well prepared we are to face that survival moment of truth.

** Flammable Liquids/Foam Applications - NMFTA Instructors Class # 325 Location: Fire Grounds Flamms Pad This 4-hr LIVE FIRE session is designed to instruct the student in the handling of different types of flammable and combustible liquid emergencies. Subjects include: Definitions, Physical Properties, Transportation, Water Use, Foam Application, and Fire Ground Evolutions. PPE must comply with NFPA Standards and must pass inspection by Academy Staff. Proper clothing must be worn under the student’s protective clothing.

**Structural Firefighting - NMFTA Instructors Class #440 Location: Fire Grounds Burn Building This 4-hr. session is designed to give the firefighter a basic understanding of structural fires and suppression tactics. Subjects discussed will include: Fire Flow Formula, Offensive and Defensive Attacks, Strategy and Tactics, Direct and Indirect Attacks, Incident Command System. Students will participate in various Fire Ground Evolutions. CEU's = 2 Prep

** Night Time Flammable in The Dark - NMFTA Instructors Class # 486 Location: Fire Grounds Flamms Pad This 4-hr live fire session is designed to instruct the student in the handling of different types of flammable and combustible liquid emergencies with the added challenge of "Darkness". Subjects include: Definitions, Physical Properties, Transportation, Water Use, Foam Application, and Fire Ground Evolutions. PPE must comply with NFPA Standards and must pass inspection by Academy Staff. Proper clothing must be worn under the student’s protective clothing.

** Liquid Petroleum Spectacular (4hrs.) - NMFTA Instructors Class #490 Location: Fire Grounds LPG Pad This 4-hr. live fire training session is designed to provide basic hands-on instruction in the handling of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Emergencies with the added challenge of doing it during the hours of darkness! Topics will cover Liquid Petroleum Gas Properties, Tank and Valve designs, Transportation of LPG and Fire Ground Evolutions to include Water Applications. Be prepared for some spectacular fires and views! CEU's = 2 hrs. Operations

Rural Firefighting Tactics -- NMFTA Instructors Class # 558 Location: Burn Building

Track: WATER

Hose Rolls, Connections and Hardware - NMFTA Instructors Class # 160 Location: Hose Pad Our primary mission is to suppress fires and, when assigned to the engine, be proficient in getting the hose into service, no matter what hose load we use. The fire doesn’t care whether we use a flat load or a minuteman load, if we’re operating at a wood-frame ranch or a multiple dwelling of ordinary construction, or if the fire started on the first floor or the fourth. Getting the hoseline into service and putting water on the fire are the greatest life-saving actions we can perform on the fireground. To do this well, we must train on the hose loads we use regularly.

Hose Lays - NMFTA Instructors Class # 190 Location: Hose Pad Our primary mission is to suppress fires and, when assigned to the engine, be proficient in getting the hose into service, no matter what hose load we use.

Fire Hydrant Ops - NMFTA Instructors Class # 230 Location: Hose Pad Dry barrel, wet barrel, dry hydrant, what's the difference? Maintenance, inspection, forward lay, reverse lay, adapters...it will all be covered during this session on Fire Hydrant Ops! The single most important thing about having fire hydrants is that they advertise “Fire Protection!” Communities expect that at a moment’s notice, day or night, in any weather, the hydrant will supply sufficient water to extinguish a fire.

Nozzles & Fire Streams - NMFTA Instructors Class #240 Location: Hose Pad EFFICIENT FIRE STREAMS ARE SOMETIMES TAKEN FOR GRANTED; THE IMPORTANCE OF ADEQUATE FIRE FLOW WITH MANAGEABLE NOZZLE REACTION IS SOMETIMES OVERLOOKED. The hallmark of a good fire department is the ability to make an aggressive interior attack. When occupants await rescue and are

trapped by fire, it is the aggressive fire department that will save them.

High Rise Applications - NMFTA Instructors Class #346 Location: Hose Pad High-rise fires are intense. Everything about them presents a unique set of challenges to firefighters who are not strangers to being challenged. One aspect that gets lost at times is layout of fire floors and how different and confusing they can be; especially when you add in fire, smoke, urgency and challenging access. Fortunately, there a few things firefighters can do to lessen the impact of fire floor layout in high-rise fires. Some are done well before the fire starts, others during the operation. All are well within your ability to accomplish and would be a great addition to your toolbox and strategic/tactical planning

Basic Pump Ops - NMFTA Instructors Class #423 Fire Grounds: Hose Pad Operating the pump at a working fire can be a high-pressure job, if you will excuse the pun. Pump operators are obliged to supply water on demand to a wide variety of appliances ranging from booster reels to cellar pipes to sprinkler systems, including every kind of handline and master stream in between. Basics of Pump Testing Class # 520 Location: Hose Pad Performance testing of fire pumps, once commonly referred to as service testing, is a basic requirement under National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1911, Standard for the Inspection, Maintenance, Testing, and Retirement of In-Service Automotive Fire Apparatus, that is in place to help ensure the heart of your fire truck, the fire pump, performs as designed so it can be reasonably expected to pump rated capacity every time it's needed during an emergency on the fireground.

Hydrant Testing -- NMFTA Instructors Class # 575 Location: Hose Pad Regular hydrant testing is a significant component of the district's water supply program. Water systems are constantly being impacted by improvements, deterioration, changes in usage, and even water district maintenance activities which may affect zone valve settings. As a result it is important to periodically test all fire hydrants to determine what their capabilities would be in an emergency. In addition to determining fire flows, testing can uncover a number of mechanical problems from valves that don't operate properly to leaks and even pump damaging debris flowing from hydrants. It is imperative that we discover problems and get them repaired before the hydrant is needed in an emergency.

Tanker Shuttle Operations Class # 635 Location: Fire Grounds Flamms Pad The water tender shuttle is the cornerstone of water supply operations for a large part of our country’s fire service. For many fire departments, a hydrant on every corner is an unheard of luxury.

Alternative water supplies, including tanker shuttles, are the standard procedures. Experience in water supply operations is the best teacher. It is also the most expensive teacher. For the fire service, this often translates into lives lost; firefighters injured or killed; and thousands, maybe millions, of dollars of property lost. Training is the second best teacher. It is very low cost in terms of outcome-little lost or risked and much gained.
