The Next Killer Class?I’ve been involved in this hobby for 23 years. For 10 of those years, I’ve been workinghere at Radio Control Car Action. During that time, I reviewed many great cars andtrucks, yet there are still some vehicles that blow me away. One such example is ourcover subject—the Losi TEN-T. Not too long ago, 1⁄10-scale gas trucks were all the rage, but the class slowly died off. The reason behind the demise of the class was simple; asengines became more and more powerful, it became extremely difficult for the averageperson to be able to put all that power down with a 2WD chassis. Because of this, rac-ers and hobbyists alike shifted from 1⁄10-scale gas trucks over to much larger 1⁄8-scaletruggies. People quickly found the truggies to be more durable, and they also found itconsiderably easier to be able to put the power to the ground because of their 4WD drivetrain. But there are some considerations to think of when choosing a truggy: theycost a lot more than any 2WD truck and also require a good-size track to run on. Foryears I’ve been hoping someone would design and build a competition-level 4WD 1⁄10-scale truck. A few have been released over the years, but they were more basher-typetrucks and were somewhat underpowered.

Fast forward to today—Losi has wiped the slate clean and designed a truck that cantake a beating, handles well, has lots of power and is easy on the wallet. Who wouldn’t want that? The TEN-T is a 1⁄10-scale version of Losi’s popular 8IGHT-T, so youknow it will be a winner (and did I mention it has plenty of power?). But there’s more. The thing that excites me the most is the new starting system Losi developed. Thistotally hands-free system uses an extra channel on the radio and an on-board electricstarter motor/igniter to turn the engine over. Not only is this system easy for anyoneto use, but it also reduces the truck’s overall operating cost because there’s no need tobuy starter batteries and a charger to get it running. Everything you need comes in onebox! Well ... you’ll still need to get some fuel, but you get the point. You can turn topage 60 for our world exclusive test on this innovative truck.

Hopefully, this entry will inspire other companies and we’ll see a number of vehicleslike this in the near future. And I honestly can’t wait to see what they all come up withwhile trying to top the TEN-T.

FIRST DRIVE LOSI TEN-T

CHASSIS. Since the TEN-T isa scaled-down version of the8IGHT-T, you’ll find it has thesame chassis layout. Theengine and fuel tank are on theleft of the chassis, and theradio tray is mounted on theright. A 3mm-thick black-anodized aluminum plate is thebackbone of the TEN-T, and itfeatures kick-up in the frontwith the sides bent slightly toincrease chassis stiffness.

Molded front and rear bracesfurther stiffen the chassis.Molded mud guards on thesides of the chassis bolt inplace and keep debris out ofthe chassis and add protectionto the radio tray and tunedpipe. The fronts of the mudguards are raised for increasedprotection from the dirt thatflies off the front tires. A one-piece radio tray is held in placewith four screws. The receiverpack is protected by a moldedbox in the rear, and the receiv-

er towards the front of the trayis in its own box.

SUSPENSION & STEERING.Just like its big brother, theTEN-T uses a fully adjustablefront and rear independentsuspension to soak up bumpsand jumps. The upper linksconsists of durable rod endsand steel turnbuckles for easyadjustability of front and rearcamber. Below the turnbucklelinks are suspension arms thatare thick and braced for abuse.

The insides of the front andrear arms pivot on capturedhingepins up front. A rear outerhingepin is secured on bothsides by large locknuts, andlarge-diameter button-headbolts hold the hub carriers. Theshocks are blue-anodized alu-minum, fluid-filled units thatfeature threaded bodies foreasy and precise ride-heightadjustment. The top sides ofthe shocks are mounted to ablack-anodized aluminumshock tower, and you’ll find

Having tested many nitro-powered vehicles and all with differentstarting systems, I was very curious to see how well Losi’sonboard starting system worked—especially with an engine thathadn’t been broken in. The tight fit of a new piston and sleevecan put strain on an electric starter, but the Losi system had notrouble turning the engine over when new. After engine break-in,I changed the glow plug and topped off the tank; then it wastime to have fun! The starter system is so cool: I hit the starterbutton on the Spektrum radio, and after a second or two, theengine tuned over and fired to life. The power the engine putsout is impressive and smooth. The truck quickly took off downthe street in front of my house and maxed out at 45mph! Thankgoodness for the dual disc brakes; I had to get on them in ahurry, and they had no trouble slowing the speeding truck to a

stop. I put the truck on grass and ripped aroundfor a while, and the TEN-T threw grass everywhere.

Steering was very responsive on pavement and ongrass; the servo has plenty of torque for this job. I got a

good tune on the engine and headed to Pin Shop Hobbies inOakville, CT, to get some track time and see how the truck han-dled bumps, jumps and tight turns. I logged lots of laps on thistrack with my Losi 8IGHT-T, so I had something to compare theTEN-T to while I was out there. I placed the truck in pit lane andwalked up to the driver’s stand. Once again, the engine easilyfired with a push of the button. I figured the TEN-T wouldn’t beas stable as my larger 8IGHT-T because it has less weight in thechassis, but the truck felt right at home on the tight track. It wasvery stable and wasn’t fazed by any track imperfections. Whendoing jumps, I was very impressed by how well this truck takesoff and soaks up the landings. I was able to clear larger jumpson the track that give some truggies fits. The speed of the truckdown the straight is awesome, and the TEN-T had no troublekeeping up with or passing any 1⁄8-scale truggy. This truck, likeother Losi vehicles, has fantastic steering and was great in tightturns, where it had lots of on-power steering. I noticed the differ-entials were diffing out slightly on loose track sections; this wasmost notable in the center diff. That’s not much of a problembecause it can be fixed by swapping out the grease with somesilicone fluid. After a few tanks, I made a few adjustments to thetruck such as increasing rear brake bias and front toe-out, and Icleaned out the grease from the diffs and installed 5,000WT sili-cone fluid to start in the diffs. Back on the track, the truck felteven better than before. It put power down more effectivelythanks to the silicone in the diffs, and my lap times noticeablydecreased as I ran lap after lap. The extra rear brake reallyhelped get the truck around the tighter corners. So far I’m prettyamazed with the performance of the Ten-T out of the box!

three mounting positions foreach; there are also threemounting options on the sus-pension arms. Rubber coverson the bottom of the shockbodies protect the shockshafts and reduce wear. Thesteering servo is connected toa dual-bellcrank steering sys-tem, and adjustable turnbuck-les span the gap between thebellcranks to the outer hubs. The right side bellcrank has anadjustable spring-loadedservo-saver built into it, so

there’s no need for a servo-mounted servo-saver.

DRIVETRAIN. Even the drive-train of the TEN-T was bor-rowed from the 8IGHT-T, butone innovative tweak wasmade to the system. Attachedto the flywheel is a two-shoecomposite clutch with wrap-around spring, and the clutchbell meshes with a bevel gear-type center diff. Universal driveshafts connect the centerdiff assembly to the front and

rear differentials. The ring gearon the rear diff is turned 180degrees from the one in thefront, so that the rear drive-shaft can run as straight aspossible, which makes the dri-vetrain more efficient. All threegear differentials come out ofthe factory packed withgrease, but they’re sealed, sothey can be tuned with sili-cone fluid if you choose to doso. Universal driveshafts areon all four corners of thetruck, and the entire drivetrain

is supported by rubber-sealedball bearings.

ENGINE & ACCESSORIES.Everyone wants the most powerpossible in any vehicle theyown, and the Losi folks madesure they didn’t disappointwhen designing this truck. Theybolted in a 3.4cc engine, whichis just a tick under .21 cubicinch; you’d usually see a .18-size engine in a truck this size.The starter system is one of themost unique systems out there;

What a truck! Losi has provideda truck that solves a lot of“problems” connected withnitro-powered vehicles. Thingssuch as complex starting andfuel tanks that stop picking upfuel when the vehicle is upsidedown make some people sec-ond-guess nitro power. Youdon’t have those issues with theLosi TEN-T; instead you get atruck that offers topnotch han-dling and has an extremely pow-erful engine. The fact that youcan start the truck remotely isjust icing on the cake. I am veryimpressed with this packageand had lots of fun driving itaround my yard. In addition itwas great on the track! It trulyfeels like a scaled-down truggy.I am a racer at heart so it was atotal blast ripping lap after lap. Ican’t wait to tweak my truck toget the most out of it on thetrack.

Another great feature of the TEN-T isthe included radio system and what itprovides the user. You get a SpektrumDX3S 2.4GHz system that eliminatesany risk of frequency conflicts andreduces radio interference. This three-channel radio features a 10-modelmemory, endpoint adjustment, servo-reversing, throttle punch and more. Alarge LCD display shows you all theinformation, and a roller-type button onthe side of the radio makes navigatingthe menus easy to do. The radio alsofeatures real-time telemetry and showsyou engine temperature, receiver packvoltage and speed of the truck. A stan-dard servo operates the slide carbure-tor on the engine, and Losi provides ahigh-torque steering servo for goodsteering response in all situations. Thereceiver and servos are powered by alight and compact LiPo battery packthat supplies enough power to run theservos and the starter system. A charg-er for the receiver pack is included withthe truck.

The Losi TEN-T comes equipped with theR.O.S.S.—Remote Onboard Starting System.Usually we see nitro vehicles that require astarter box, shaft starter or pull-start to turn theengine’s crankshaft over, while you grab andconnect a glow starter to the glow plug. Thisrequires hands-on starting, no matter which oneyou choose, and there are increased costs withalmost any option. They require batteries and a charger to get thingsgoing. Once you buy the TEN-T, this R.O.S.S. system from Losirequires no additional purchases, and you fire the engine from theradio. You never have to touch the truck! It heats the glow plug and

then, after a few seconds, turnsthe engine over. Starting couldn’tbe any easier, and now when yourengine stalls far from where you’restanding, just push the button anddrive the truck over for a fewtweaks of the engine’s carburetor.

RC CAR ACTION: What was the design team’sgoal with the TEN-T?GARY KYES: We wanted to capture 1⁄8-scale per-formance and durability in a 1⁄10-scale vehicle. Noteveryone has the wallet or area to run a 1⁄8 car.

RCCA: What was the most difficult part of thetruck to design?GK: It was hard to get all the parts into a smallerarea without sacrificing performance and durability.

RCCA: What are you most proud of?GK: The “package”—great radio, the most powerfulsmall-block engine, proven chassis design and con-struction, and the starting system.

RCCA: Will there be a race roller?GK: Probably not immediately, but we will certainly listen to our customers to meet theirdemands.

RCCA: Do you think the TEN-T will start a new racing class?GK: I would not be surprised. 2WD stadium trucks were a blast, but they couldn’t keep up with the improving engine power and track conditions when run with 1⁄8-scale cars. It’s anew game with the TEN-T! In fact, during development we found that the TEN-T was actual-ly faster than most 1⁄8-scale cars on some tracks.

FEATURESfind out all about it in the “Supereasy starting” sidebar. Theengine uses a two-needle com-posite-slide carburetor to con-trol the power, and two mount-ing positions for the high-speedcarb make access easy. A largeheatsink head keeps thingscool; a protective plastic guardon top protects it when you flipthe truck over. Inside you’ll findproven ABC construction andhigh-quality crankshaft bear-ings. A large-diameter dual-ele-ment air filter keeps debris out

of the carburetor, and it’s sup-ported by a wire mount toreduce the risk of it falling offduring operation. The exhaustflows through an aluminumheader and tuned pipe that hasbeen tweaked to get the mostpower possible out of the Losi3.4cc engine. A 75cc fuel tankwith clunk feeds fuel to theengine, and because it has aclunk inside, it will continue tosupply fuel to the engine evenwhen it’s upside down. A mold-ed splash guard on top of the

fuel tank keeps any spilled fuelaway from the brakes.

BODY, WHEELS & TIRES.The Losi TEN-T uses a paintedand trimmed racing truck bodyto cover the components onthe chassis; it’s available ingreen or orange. A moldedblack wing behind the bodyincreases rear downforce andgives the truck a racing look.Losi includes its 1⁄10-scale 320series Zombie Max tires in softcompound with a combination

of spikes and paddles for goodtraction on various surfaces. They are mounted on veryattractive 320 Force wheelsthat have a great-looking multi-spoke design and are chrome-plated. A center cap covers thewheel nuts and is held in placeby three hex-head screws. They look great but increasethe time that it takes to get thewheels off the truck. They aredriven by 14mm wheel hexes.

When maintaining the TEN-T, fivescrews are all it takes to get theradio tray out. Plugs for thestarter system and engine tempwire make removal a super easyprocess.

A bevel gear-type center diff sends power to the front and rear wheels and like the frontand rear gear diffs, it’s sealed so they can be tuned with silicone fluid.

14mm hexes spin the rims and they are mounted onrebuildable steel universal driveshafts on all four corners.

Left: The TEN-T comes with aSpektrum DX3S 2.4GHz radiosystem and it features real-timetelemetry. Below: The race-inspired 75cc fuel tank featuresan internal clunk that will pick upfuel no matter what the positionof the fuel tank. Clips are includ-ed to keep the fuel lines in place.

Front and rear disc brakes slow the truck down andfront and rear brake bias can be changed thanks to thecenter diff.

A two-shoe clutch effectively transfers the enginepower to the drivetrain.
