Two years ago, the pain started. Valorie Francisci, a special education aide for 11th grade students at Vineland High School, found she had to urinate more frequently and urgently. Wherever she went, she had to make sure there was a bathroom nearby. Every area of her life was adversely affected.

Valorie dealt with the pain for months, too embarrassed to see a doctor. But the pain only increased. When she finally sought treatment, it was only the beginning of a long journey that led her to Cape Regional Health System.

In her early 50’s, the Vineland resident struggled with continuing pain. “I was living with this pain that nothing could alleviate,” Valorie remembers. “Any physical activity could spur on a bladder spasm. I had constant back aches, and I was exhausted all the time.”

A physical therapist Valorie was working with to alleviate the pain from her pelvic floor disorder suggested she see a urogynecologist. So, Valorie made an appointment with Gary Mirone, DO, a fellowship-trained, board-certified urogynecologist at Cape Regional Health System’s Jane Osborne Center for Women’s Health. “At our first appointment, Dr. Mirone asked me to tell him everything in full detail,” she says. “He listened to every single word that I said.”

Dr. Mirone suspected several conditions were to blame for Valorie’s pain – all relating to her bladder and pelvic floor. After a series of tests were completed, four conditions came back positive.

To combat Valorie’s condition, Dr. Mirone developed a comprehensive plan of care which included changes to her diet and several minimally invasive procedures.

After years of pain, Valorie says she is pain-free since seeing Dr. Mirone. “My bladder is under control and functioning normally” she says. “I feel like me again.”

Grace Gilbert is a volunteer and former board member for Cape Regional Medical Center – she had spent years serving as a patient advocate, escorting families around the hospital and seeing how she could improve the patient experience. So when she needed to find a specialist to treat her hypothyroidism and osteoporosis, she knew exactly which health system she wanted to turn to.

“I love our health system,” the 79-year-old Cape May Court House resident says. “We’re very fortunate to have attracted such a great caliber of doctors to Cape May County.”

After her family doctor recommended she seek out an endocrinologist to monitor her issues, Grace found Christopher Zitnay, MD, a board-certified endocrinologist with Cape Regional Health System. “He’s a very knowledgeable, personable doctor,” Grace says. “He’s gotten my thyroid condition back on track.”

Grace and Dr. Zitnay worked together in what she calls a “creative” way to gain control of her fluctuating hypothyroidism.

“Treating patients is never cookie cutter,” Dr. Zitnay explains. “When one method isn’t working, you have to think outside of the box and try different things. Grace was an ideal patient; she was willing to try new things and understood that sometimes you have to wait for the medications to take effect.”

After working together to maintain her osteoporosis and hypothyroidism, Grace says she is happy with the outcome. “I’ve been on the same medicine, same dosage for three years, and I feel wonderful.”

In addition to resolving her hypothyroidism, Grace began to follow a portion-controlled diet, stayed active and lost weight. With the help of the nutrition and exercise she lost 25 pounds. “Dr. Zitnay sees me and is so proud of that,” Grace says. “He tells me, ‘Grace, great job, continue what you’re doing.’”

The fact is: About 1 in 3 adults between 50 and 75 years old – approximately 23 million people – are not getting tested as recommended.

Early screening is critical as it may detect precancerous and early-stage cancer when treatment is most likely to be successful. While colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in both men and women in the U.S., survivorship is on the rise – due in large part to screening and detecting cancer in its early stages.

Sean Gill, a member of the Middle Township High School basketball team, was doing a half-time warm up drill during a game when suddenly another player threw a half-court shot that ricocheted off the rim and hit Sean in the head.

Sean immediately felt dizzy and turned to the team’s trainer who put Sean through a series of protocol tests. He determined that he, most likely, had a mild concussion. After a thorough examination with his Primary Care Physician, Sean sought expert care at Cape Regional’s Concussion Care Center.

Sean met with A.J. Weiss, one of the Center’s eight certified brain injury specialists and underwent an evaluation which confirmed that Sean had suffered a mild concussion.

A.J. provided Sean with dos and don’ts to help get him back on the path for recovery. During this time, he advised Sean to refrain from using mobile devices, playing video games, and encouraged him to eat healthy foods, stay away from sugar and drink plenty of water.

Sean’s father, Chris, noted that staff at Cape Regional’s Concussion Care Center was extremely helpful throughout the process. “Since this is our first time going through a concussion, we didn’t know what to expect. From day one, we felt like we were in good hands at the Concussion Care Center. They

answered all of our questions and took great care of our son,” he says.

Now in his sophomore year, Sean learned a good lesson from his experience - to take concussions seriously and get the help you need and not fight through it.

Diagnosed at birth with an extremely rare genetic condition, Susan Bradway has experienced a host of health issues throughout her life. Symptoms of the condition include underdeveloped fingers and toes, along with neurological problems.

But in spite of her condition, Susan is passionate about making jewelry. She regularly goes to antique shows and flea markets to find rare and beautiful hand-blown beads, precious pearls and gems. She loves to give her creations away.

When recent fainting spells prompted her to seek out a new neurologist, Susan turned to a trusted doctor for a recommendation. Anthony Masciarelli, DO, a physician at Cape Regional Health System referred her to Tooba Fayyaz, DO, a board-certified, fellowship-trained neurologist with Cape Regional Physicians Associates.

“Finding a neurologist who listened to my concerns was very important to me,” says the 49-year-old Port Norris Resident. “I was searching for a doctor with whom I could talk and feel connected.”

Susan immediately connected with Dr. Fayyaz.

“Dr. Fayyaz has been great. She is nice, very knowledgeable and has really helped me get to the bottom of my symptoms and manage my conditions. She has also been my biggest advocate and worked hard to help me get a motorized wheelchair which gave me a whole new level of independence,” says Susan.

“Each visit, we focus on making sure Susan gets the supportive care that she needs,” said Dr. Fayyaz. “Empowering my patients and seeing them achieve their goals makes all the hard work so worthwhile.”

“My life-long health journey has had its ups and downs – but thanks to Dr. Fayyaz, I am back on track and have returned to my passion of making jewelry. I am so grateful,” says Susan.

Cape Regional Physicians Associates has added Stanley P. Michael, MD, a fellowship-trained, board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, to the Cape Regional Health System Team.

Dr. Michael is a Penn Medicine Orthopaedic Surgeon who has extensive experience in joint replacements and reconstructions, specializing in hips and knees. He is fellowship-trained in joint replacement and reconstruction as well as orthopaedic sports medicine.

Dr. Michael comes to Cape Regional from Southern Ocean Medical Center in Manahawkin, NJ, where he served as Medical Director of the Joint Replacement Program.
