Dear friends,
In a world where women’s rights and reproductive health care seem to be going backward at every turn, we are proud to say that at Planned Parenthood, we are moving forward.
In 2012, Planned Parenthood of the Southern Finger Lakes (PPSFL) opened our fi rst new health center in more than 30 years. A beautifully renovated building in Hornell, New York has more than doubled our space in that community, giving patients a private, welcoming, professional space to receive the quality health care they deserve.
At the same time, we received city approval for our 16,000 square foot health and education center in Ithaca, and began a thorough decision analysis process to evaluate our options for expansion in Corning. These preparations have brought us several steps closer to making our dream of new centers in Ithaca and Corning a reality.
Several years of hard work, planning, and investment into our data network and computer systems began to pay off in 2012. Phase one of our new electronic medical record system Nextgen was brought online in May, and we expect to be documenting every visit in the computer system by early next year.
Our public affairs department and many volunteers worked throughout the year to bring our important message to the community – women’s health does matter! Our staff and supporters held phone banks, workshops, and events. We were thrilled to have attorney and women’s rights activist Sandra Fluke join us for one of our exciting advocacy events. These efforts made a big impact on our local communities, statewide, and around the country.
Our goal for the past few years has been simple: create an affi liate that can survive and thrive, even in the challenging economic, political, and health care environment that we live in.
We are proud of our strategic accomplishments over the past few years, and we are equally proud that in 2012, we did all this while continuing the amazing work that has made Planned Parenthood such a trusted resource for so many people over the years. It is our entire family who deserves credit – the dedicated, hard-working staff, committed volunteers, and generous community supporters, our Board of Directors, and our partners in the community.
LETTER FROM THE CEO & BOARD CHAIR
We hope you enjoy our 2012 Annual Report. There is more work to do, of course, and while we can expect more attacks on women’s health and sexual and reproductive freedom, we know our challenge is to move forward, not backward. Together, with your help, that is exactly what we will do.
With gratitude and resolve,
Joe Sammons Steve Ruoff President & CEO Board Chair

Care. No Matter What.PATIENT SERVICES2012 brought nearly 12,000 patients to our doors: patients who sought our care because they trust our highly trained health care professionals to provide exceptional services with attentiveness and compassion. We’ve earned this confi dence with over 40 years of providing confi dential, expert care without judgment. 1 in 5 women have turned to Planned Parenthood, and we continue to serve them, their families, and their neighbors regardless of age, race, ethnicity, physical ability or attributes, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or ability to pay.
In 2012, we began laying the groundwork for transgender hormone and preventive health services so that in 2013 we could better meet the needs of trans women, trans men, gender-queer people, and others who have health care needs unique to their gender.
We continued our concentrated effort to teach patients about the benefi ts of long acting reversible contraception (LARC) methods — IUDs, Implants, and Depo Provera — which are more effective in typical use for preventing pregnancy because they do not rely on daily use for their effectiveness. The percentage of clients using LARCs increased to 24% in 2012 and we saw a corresponding 6% decrease in the number of abortions. We are constantly adapting to meet the wide-ranging needs of our patients and provide them with the best possible care. This can be challenging as our staff and patient load has outgrown some of our health centers, protesters stand just outside our buildings, and budget cuts demand complex problem solving to ensure our patients do not lose any of the benefi ts they receive by choosing Planned Parenthood for their care. Our dedicated, passionate staff and volunteers work tirelessly, always putting the patient fi rst, fi nding ways to balance these challenges with heart, extra effort, and ingenuity.
Renovations on our new Hornell Health Center were completed in April and in October, we began offering services 3 days a week instead of 2 days a week. Our visits increased 16% compared to 2011 during the last 3 months of the year.

Care. No Matter What.PROGRAMMING & COMMUNICATIONS2012 was our second year as a combined education, sexual assault, and communications department offering affi liate-wide programming and outreach through several grant and agency funded projects – family planning education, teen pregnancy and STD prevention, sexual assault prevention education and direct victim services, as well as LGBT health and wellness. Our programming team provided honest information and compassionate support to nearly 14,000 people in our region. Our communications staff substantially increased our visibility by advertising in more markets, and signifi cant improvements in the quality and volume of in-house design work has made all our messaging more effective while reducing costs. It was by far our most productive year in regard to increasing our presence and visibility as well as the community’s understanding of the depth and breadth of the services, programming, resources, and support we provide.
We are proud to have had 17 peer educators from 3 local high schools in our CAPTeens group. We also continued to expand the LGBT Youth Groups in Tompkins and Steuben counties. Due to requests for a transgender-specifi c group, we began a Saturday transgender youth group in Ithaca as well. Each of our major grant-funded programs had at least one core area that was held up as an example of a best practice for New York State during annual reviews and monitoring visits.
Our vision is simple: We will continue to bring our staff and programs closer together to meet the needs of our community. Our work often happens in classrooms, through coalitions, at health fairs, and in the media. By continuing to build a more cohesive and collaborative team, each element of this important work strengthens the rest. This ensures that the patients, students, parents, and youth-serving professionals we work with—as well as the community-at-large—get the information they need, when and where they need it most. And they will know that we are here, that we care, and we can help.
Our team of exceptional educators continues to build their networks, contacts, and programming expertise every year. We continue to see repeat program requests, increases in multi-session program series, and invitations into new schools and organizations to provide programs.

Care. No Matter What.PUBLIC AFFAIRSWhat a roller coaster of a year for our advocates in 2012! Locally and on the national stage, reproductive health issues were in the spotlight more than ever. Sometimes the news was disheartening to say the least--who can forget the “men only” panel that testifi ed before congress on birth control, or the ongoing efforts to defund not only Planned Parenthood, but family planning programs in general?
Whatever challenges we faced, PPSFL staff and supporters were more than equal to them. Because we care, no matter what!
We started out the year by bringing a record 28 people to the annual state-wide Day of Action where we rallied with hundreds of allies and met with local lawmakers on the fi rst day of the legislative session. Altogether in 2012 our staff and supporters met with elected offi cials more than twenty times throughout the year.
Our youth advocates continued to play a major role in community outreach, particularly among their peers on campus. For the fi rst time in 2012, students from all three of our local college advocacy groups attended a national training together—the Youth Organizing and Policy Institute (YOPI) in Albany. Throughout the year, our youth supporters volunteered over 400 hours of their time in training, educating, and organizing to promote reproductive health and rights.
Together with our grassroots supporters, we celebrated some important victories in 2012, not least of which was the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold a provision of health care reform that makes birth control available without copays through nearly all insurance plans. Advocating for sensible reproductive health policies like the birth control benefi t is at the core of what Planned Parenthood does every day. It’s no wonder that nationwide, Planned Parenthood has a 69% public approval rating. The public believes in what we do because our advocates never stop fi ghting for a brighter future.
For the fi rst time in PPSFL history, students from three different Planned Parenthood youth advocacy chapters attended a national conference together. Young people throughout our region continue to play a growing role in our public affairs work.

One of the most important ways to reduce unintended pregnancy is to provide patients with effective methods of contraception. Patients may face barriers to returning for follow-up visits, so we offer women who are not using effective contraception, and do not wish to become pregnant, an opportunity to begin an effective contraceptive method at every offi ce visit. We have been more successful in this effort than any other family planning providers in New York State. (Comparative data is not yet available for 2012, but the percentage for PPSFL increased again to 71%.)

FINANCIALS 2012 HIGHLIGHTS
Patients using long acting reversible contraceptives increased 2% and we saw a corresponding decrease in the number of patients seeking abortions by 6%.
We provided 1,217 hours of programming & outreach to 13,902 people - over 75% of whom were youth. We offered 763 educational and awareness raising programs, tablings, and events. We received 853 calls to our sexual assault hotline. We ran 150 print ads and 680 radio spots to educate our community about our services and programs.
We began preparations for offering services for transgender people in our region, including prescribing and monitoring cross-sex hormone therapy. We will be the fi rst Planned Parenthood in New York State to offer this service. We take great pride in providing compassionate care for underserved people in our community and believe that initiating this new service for transgender people furthers our mission.
