Like most everyone, I am overcome with shock at the passing of another year. Here we stand, all together, toes on the edge, looking out upon the canyons of a new year that stretch further than the eye can see. What’s in store for us? Will there be a new job, new car, new baby, or how about new friends? The possibilities are endless! That’s what makes the new year ahead so exciting, but also so intimidating. Having said that, I think probably the most common feeling one gets at the beginning of a new year is hope.

Hope is such an expressive word and conveys opti-mism, cheerfulness and expectation. Hope is why so many embark on New Year’s resolutions. Did you know that 40 to 45% of American adults make one or more resolutions each year? As probably expected, among the top New Year’s resolutions are those about weight loss, exercise, and smoking. Interestingly enough, even though many break their resolutions, studies show that simply making the resolution is useful. Those who do are 10 times more likely to attain their goals than those who do not.

Here are some interesting statistics about the lifespan of these new resolutions (www.proactivechange.com):

- past the first week: 75% - past 2 weeks: 71% - after one month: 64% - after 6 months: 46%

Because of the “Hope Factor,” the new year is not just a springboard for resolutions, but also a time to reassess, regenerate and reenergize. While the fact that it’s a new year does not erase your existing hardships, experts have shown that feeling better about yourself and your situa-tion, no matter how negative, can actually help you cope and deal more effectively. That’s just one more reason to seriously consider a new commitment to exercise this year. Everyone knows that exercise has many health benefits, but what is often overlooked is how exercise can improve your mood and give you a general feeling of well being.

Rather than resolving yourself to a strict diet or a rig-orous exercise program, consider small changes. Baby steps can lead to giant steps. Instead of eating a brownie, grab an apple. Put on a pair of tennis shoes and walk around the block to get your mail instead of going directly to the mail-box. If you don’t have a dog, borrow your neighbor’s and take the dog for a walk (You can borrow mine anytime!). Eventually, your exercise level will increase and you’ll get hooked on those endorphin highs!

Don’t waste the karma of a New Year. Grab the glow and use it productively. Anything you accomplish, no mat-ter how small, will satisfy the hope of better things ahead. Carpe diem and best wishes for a successful and gratifying New Year!

winter co-ed basketball

The Rancho Family YMCA Co-Ed Winter Basketball League begins January 30 and runs through March 27. This fun-based recreational bas-ketball league is designed to improve player skills and fundamentals while incorporating the YMCA core values in a fun, enjoyable environment where everyone plays equally. Games and practices will be held on Saturdays with practices 45 minutes before each game. Age divisions are 4/5, 6/7, 8/10 and 11/13. League sign-up day and skill assessments are scheduled for the 9th of January. Practices, games and skill assessments are held at the Rancho Family YMCA outdoor courts at the Scripps Poway Parkway site. League fees are $66 for YMCA members and $94 for non-members. There is a $5 late fee for registrants after January 17. Kids of all skill levels are welcome.

As residents, we waited a long time for our shopping centers here in 4S Ranch and when they finally arrived it was at the height of the real estate boom. We were thrilled to have grocery stores, eateries and cute clothing shops. Since there was no recession, we shopped regularly and consequently supported the busi-nesses in the area. Unfortunately, times have changed and our local businesses are left pay-ing pre-recession rent, but facing less traffic to cover costs. They continually support school events, foundations and sports leagues with free merchandise and services, so now it’s time to return the favor. Visit these local merchandisers, espe-cially the smaller shops, as often as you possibly can. They are working for a living just like you and I. Every purchase counts! Thanks 4S Ranch!

Rancho Bernardo Girls Softball will hold their registrations for the spring recreational season on Saturday, January 2 at Roundtable Pizza (16761 Bernardo Center Dr.) and Tuesday, January 5 at the RB Rec Center (18448 W Bernardo Dr.). Girls ages 4-14 are welcome. The cost is $95 for T-ball players and $120 for all others. Register by January 2 and be entered into a drawing to receive a $25 rebate on your registration! 4S Ranch Little League will be holding their final registration for the coming season on Thursday, January 7 from 6 to 8:30 pm at Frozen Ropes. Tryouts will take place on January 15 and 16, and practices will begin on February 1. Opening Day Ceremonies and games will be held on March 6.

4th annual chili & Dessert cook-off fox meadow lane

They came with wagons. They came with scooters. Some even came with cars. Families of Fox Meadow Drive and surrounding streets joined together recently for their 4th Annual Chili & Dessert Cook-Off. Prep and setup go without a hitch as everyone pitches in tables, chairs, exten-sion cords, as well as corn bread, chips, plates and napkins. Then, of course, there’s the chili. Oh the chili! There were 10 delec-table entries this year ready to be judged. There is one simple rule: in order to vote, you must taste all the entries. Tasting is simple as tiny taster cups are laid out next to each crockpot of chili along with crackers and chips to “cleanse your palette.”

This year, the names of the chili were as lively as the chili itself: Farm Ville Chili, Wild Pig Green Chili, Chew Chew Chili, Hot Stuff on a Chili Day, 4th times a charm Chili, Chillin Chili, Nan’s Chili, Irish Chili, Totally Rad Chili. Even the kids get into the kitchen, with two of the entries made by children. The winners of this year’s Chili Cook-Off were Mark & Brandy Roberts with their “??? Chili” (Yes, that was the real name).

After everyone had voted and gone back for a full bowl of their favorite chili, it was time for dessert! (Not that anyone had room in their very full stomachs, but tradition is tradition.) This year’s desserts were as yummy as the names: Sweet Indulgence Cookie Bar, Chewy Jammers, Peanut Butter Party in your mouth, “Foxy” Pumpkin Gingerbread Trifle, and B’s Brownies. The winner was Lori Moody with her “Foxy” Pumpkin Gingerbread Trifle.

a perfect season for blue lightning

Blue Lightning, a girls under 8 recreational soccer team here in 4S Ranch, accomplished the unfathomable, even for this young age level - A PERFECT SEASON! The definition of a “Perfect Season” is: any sports season, including the playoff portion of a season, in which a team remains undefeated and untied. This team had a record of 9-0 in regular season play and then went 3-0 in the End of Season Tournament to win their division championship for Fall 2009. That’s a combined record of 12 - 0. If that’s not extraordinary enough, the team scored an impressive 57 goals, while only allowing eight. They did not allow a single goal in the playoffs. The team played like champions the entire season. This achievement was a total team effort, including coaches and parents. Any way you look at it, Coach Mark Crisostomo and Coach Marcus Preciado could not be more proud of their girls!

There are groups of friends and family football throughout 4S Ranch, but there is one group that has been gathering for as long as 4S Ranch has been around. On several occasions, they even played in muddy, soggy fields. Nothing stops Friends & Family Thanksgiving Football! The group changes and grows through the years, not so much in numbers, but in ages. Kids do get older after all. Now, the bunch divides into two distinct groups. The first group is the older “can’t move very fast” group combined with the kids 11 and younger. The other group con-sists of the older “I think I still got it” group combined with the teenage boys. A fun time is had by all and it’s a tradition that will be passed on for many years to come.

If you’re looking for a fun way to bring your friends and fam-ily together each year, think about starting a tradition like this one. It’s traditions like these that make 4S Ranch so special.

del norte lady nighthawks Jr.Midget cheer team is Making headlines

This is the second year that cheer has been offered through the Nighthawk organization and the first year that one of their cheer teams has competed at the SDYFC Local Cheer Competition. The Del Norte Lady Nighthawk Jr. Midgets Cheer Team has been together since June of 2009. They are the first team to win first place their first time around, which they did at the Sports Arena in November. On December 5, they competed in the JAMZ Golden Classic at Six Flags Magic Mountain and won second place for their division (Show Cheer Youth III Level 1). Their scores were so high that they qualified to compete in the JAMZ National Youth Cheer Championship hosted in Las Vegas - January 27 through February 2, 2010. They will compete against various cheer squads throughout the United States.

The team consists of the following girls : Leilani Fallentine, Mia Spector, Lanae Keller, Nathalia Hernandez, Alisha Bairley, Montana Betts, Shaihna Zulueta, La’Treiell Scott, Ariyonne Gillespie. The majority of the team lives in the 4S community and 8 out of 9 of them attend Oak Valley Middle School. For many of them, it is only their first year cheering. For head coach Kenyatta Parker, it’s only her second year as a cheer coach. It’s a labor of love for Coach Kenyatta who doesn’t even have a child on the team. She does, however, have a 7 year old who plays football for the organization.

On December 2, the 4S Ranch ~ Del Sur Community Foundation hosted a fantastic inaugural Divas, Designs and Desserts event. The event’s main purpose was to share information about and encourage membership in the Foundation. In addition to hearing more about the Foundation, participants enjoyed holiday shopping and extraordinary desserts provided by Foundation members Coldstone Creamery Rancho Bernardo and Cute Cakes. The evening rounded out with guest speaker Cheri Kuptz, a mixed media teacher from our own Del Norte High School, Marco Velasco, a DJ who donated his time, and a live band performance from Swivel and the Groove. The Diva night allowed over 320 women access to a fabulous evening of entertainment.

For those who attended, the Foundation is offering either the table captain, or a guest, the opportunity to apply their table costs to a new mem-bership. The memberships are valid for one calendar year and will allow you to be involved in the grants process. This year, the Foundation members as well as the Divas have raised approximately $15,000 to be granted out to the community in June. This is the largest amount ever granted by the Foundation. The Foundation thanks the following members for their sup-port this year. They encourage both individuals and businesses to become members and join them in giving back to our wonderful community.

We do anticipate having a 14U team this year with a volunteer manager who played college ball at Brown University. This is great preparation if your daughter is considering high school softball.

We will be nominating managers at the next meeting. Even if you have already indicated you would like to manage, please do so again by respond-ing to [email protected]. We will be sponsoring up to five adults and five 12-14 year old kids to become ASA certified umpires. If you are interested or have kids that might be interested, please let me know. The kid umps will be paid on a per game basis.

Finally, we are anticipating this year to be our largest sign-ups in 4S. Please do not wait until the last minute. We are all volunteers and need as much time as possible to make sure we have enough managers and coaches, umpires and other positions.

Develop your athletic potential by learning how to jump higher, move quicker, and run faster with Velocity’s certified speed and conditioning coaches. The program is for young athletes ages 8 to 14. It runs every month on Tuesday with two different sessions for two different age groups. Ages 8 – 11 meet from 3:30 to 4:15 pm and ages 12-14 meet from 4:15 to 5 pm. Classes are held in the gym and the cost is $50 per month.

bernardo heights country club completes phase two of clubhouse renovations

Phase Two of the extensive renovations on the Bernardo Heights Country Club are now complete. This phase included an enhanced front entry area and foyer with new doors, pendant lighting fixtures, and Italian porcelain floor tile. In addition, the club upgraded carpeting in the main hallways and casual din-ing room, laid Italian tile in the r o t u n d a a d j a c e n t to the pro shop and locker rooms, and gave its outdoor dining pavilion a general sprucing up. Future phases will include upgraded carpet for the fine dining room, new furniture for all the clubhouse dining areas, and a major expansion and refur-bishment of the cocktail lounge. “When completed,” Stone said, “the club-house will truly reflect the warmth and friendliness of our club’s members.”

Brandon Sieh is loving life right now. And why not, he’s young, single and he’s a Tennis Pro at the Crosby Club in Rancho Santa Fe. Not just a Tennis Pro, he’s also the Director of the Sports & Spa Center. But wait, that’s not all. Brandon also heads up both the boys and girls tennis programs at Del Norte High School.

Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, Brandon moved to San Diego about 2 ½ years ago. Brandon excelled at tennis from the day he picked up a racket. A 3-sport athlete growing up, he ultimately realized what he was most passionate about and began focusing solely on tennis in high school. He quickly became an All-State player and went on to play in college at the University of Nevada - Reno. Brandon left the university with a degree in Health and Fitness, an impressive undertaking in itself, but what really makes him proud is all the school records he broke, including being the all-time leader in doubles victories. Following college, Brandon spent some time on the pro circuit, every day growing more and more devoted to the sport.

Next step for this ardent tennis fan? Why, coaching, of course. He enrolled himself in grad school at Indiana University and signed on

as the Men’s Assistant Tennis Coach. His graduate degree in Sports Management as well as his impressive background in tennis landed him the job at the Crosby Club. He created his own destiny at Del Norte when he repeatedly stopped in to visit the Athletic Director as the school’s development progressed. Eventually, his enterprising spirit proved suc-cessful and he landed the tennis job at Del Norte.

Although he does love tennis, Brandon actually does enjoy doing other things. When his more mature clients are not trying to set him up on dates, he also likes to play golf, he strums a mean guitar, and he is a regular at Horizon Church in RSF.

Brandon has gone full circle from tennis prodigy to tennis coach. He’s grown from student to pro to director and has all the while remained focused and passionate. His accomplishments and ambition are inspir-ing. Brandon followed his dreams and the goals he set for himself and, ultimately, became successful doing what he loves best. He is quite a role model and his triumphant path is a testament to hard work, persistence and determination.

Life Lessons/Character Counts!

Are you looking for fun classes that help build great character and strong bodies for your children? The time has come to sign up! These classes focus on how your child can be stronger on the inside by making good choices, and stronger on the outside with exercise and karate techniques. Cub Scouts are Collecting Stuffed Animals

The Cub Scouts are collecting new stuffed animals to give to abused and neglected children at the Polinsky Children’s Center. These children come to the center, often for the first time, very scared and sad, as they have been removed from their homes. Many of these kids need updated immunizations, and often are given 4 to 5 shots at one time.

Confounded by New Math?

Our new math adoption is foundationally based on the principles of Cognitively Guided Instruction in mathematics. This may be a whole new way for you to look at math, but for children, it is very exploration-based with a lot of problem solving and deeper understanding of math concepts. As a parent, you have access to the Math Expressions website which pro-vides a wealth of information including an “e-glossary” of math terms, a unit overview, a family letter that helps parents understand each unit, and a “math background” section that explains how these concepts are being taught. There is also a section called “emanipulatives” where students can practice counting coins, making fraction bars, and much more. Oak Valley PTSA wants to thank all the Falcons for their generosity during the annual Giving Tree Event. We were able to reach out to eleven families to provide Christmas gifts and pantry food boxes. We could not have done it without your support!

Also, we are already hard at work planning the next Falcon Fitness Days event to be held on February 11 & 12. The goal of this program is to introduce students to different ways to exercise over and above the regular PE curriculum. We are fundraising this year to buy a class size Dance Dance Revolution set. Making Great Strides!

Prior to the 2008–2009 school year, Dr. Newman had challenged stu-dents to exceed their previous test scores, offering to shave his head if they did. In September 2009, in keeping with his promise, a large crowd watched as Superintendent Don Phillips cut the first lock from Newman’s head while the students cheered.

In a single year, Monterey Ridge Elementary School’s California Academic Performance Index (API), calculated from performance on statewide assessments across multiple content areas, rose significantly. API scores increased from 894 in 2008 to 930 in 2009. “We grew by 36 API points, which is one of the largest growths in the County and the largest growth of any school in our district,” said Newman. In fact, the school’s API score increase was seven times greater than the improvement goal set by the state.

In addition to being Newman’s first year, the 2008–2009 school year was also the first year that Monterey Ridge Elementary School had imple-mented CompassLearning Odyssey. “What’s significant about Odyssey is that it’s individualized to the discrete skill,” said Newman. Odyssey’s ability to import NWEA MAP scores and use them to automatically assign cus-tomized learning paths to individual students was a key component in the school’s decision to adopt it.

Odyssey is now a common element across the board at Monterey Ridge. “We use Odyssey as homework and in afterschool programs. We

use it with struggling, mainstream, and gifted and talented students. Very few programs can provide access across all of those levels,” said Newman. “I see CompassLearning being an important program for years to come,” Dr. Newman continued. “In my entire career, I’ve never encountered another pro-gram that has made such an impact across all boards — parents, community, and students. That, to me, is a huge tribute.”

1st Annual Science Fair

We are thrilled to announce the 1st Annual MRES Science Fair on January 28 in the MPR. The fair is open to all MRES students. Set up your project beginning at 8 am on the day of the fair. Projects will not be accepted for judging after 9 am. Family and friends may view the projects that evening from 5:30 – 7 pm. Projects are expected to remain at school during that time so they may be viewed by all parents and students. All projects may be taken home Thursday evening at 7 pm. Each participant will receive a certificate and six students, one per grade level (K-5th), will earn First Place ribbons. There will also be three Honorable-Mention ribbons per grade level; one per category of science. A few students will also be selected for Dr. Newman’s Principal Award. Winter Sports

Football, boys water polo, boys and girls cross country, and girls’ tennis, volleyball, golf and field hockey all made their debut at Del Norte. Since pretty much everything is a first for Del Norte, you can safely say that each sport set records for the school. Some records were a bit better than others, but whatever the final results, each team was successful in their own way. They paved the way for the future of fall sports at Del Norte. Now it’s time for Winter Sports to step up and take a bow. The following sports have already begun their season whether it be pre-season games or regular sched-uled games: boys & girls soccer, boys & girls basketball, girls water polo and wrestling. An Evening in Paris

It was a big change from jeans and tennis shoes, but the students at Del Norte jumped at the opportunity to dress up and arrived at the first dance in glittery dresses and suits and ties. Many of the students could not quite let go of “regulation” casual wear and sported their finest Vans along with their formal wear. It was a very successful first formal and left everyone looking forward to the next dance. Thanks to all the volunteers and special thanks to Dolores for chairing the committee.

Active Parenting Of Teens

The teen years are filled with change and challenge. “Active Parenting of Teens” is a program that helps parents meet the challenges of parenting teens and preteens in today’s turbulent society. the start of a new Year is always a great time to do a personal assessment of health habits and to ask yourself, “what can i do this year to be as healthy as i can be?” whether it involves weight loss, smoking cessation, giving up excessive alcohol or addressing a drug problem, the first step always involves being honest with yourself about your vices. if you have a lot of work to do (or have a lot of vices), talk to your doctor about what to approach first. then, one step at a time, make small, but measurable goals so that you can mark your progress. if you need assistance reaching your goals, recruit friends, family and anyone else you feel will support you along the way. by year’s end, you can celebrate your successes with all of those who you have recruited to assist you. a “new you” will emerge....healthy and victorious!

a: with the new Year, many ways to lose weight will be pro-moted on radio, television, the internet and other media sources. advertising gimmicks appeal to our willingness to try the newest potions, solutions or bestseller diet. however, that miracle diet plan or potion often works temporarily and give the illusion of quick weight

loss by way of dehydration – water weight loss – whereas for long-term health, we want to lose body fat. the bottom line is that no sci-entific evidence has shown that mixing foods, eating specifically timed meals, or ignoring a food group will promote good health, let alone long-term weight loss. so, stop dieting and start adopting a healthy lifestyle. eat more whole foods high in fiber like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. limit foods high in fat and refined carbohydrates and plan meals to avoid last minute decisions when you are hungry. exercise or move more every day. these are habits that work, will give you a great start, and keep you going in the right direction.

The late 1970’s were not the best year for selling real estate so this single dad with two small kids took a deep breath and ventured into the world of landscaping.
