Bedford Chiropractor Helps Kids with Backpack SafetyBedford Chiropractor Offers Free Spinal Assessments for Children

Aug. 1, 2010—BEDFORD, Texas— Back and Neck Care Center of Bedford will offer free spinal

assessments for all children Saturday, Aug. 7, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. to help children prepare for

the new school year.

The day of spinal assessments rounds out a week of backpack awareness. Dr. Richard

Chatfield will give free adjustments to existing patients and free first visit assessments to new

patients who bring a new or gently used backpack for donation.

The American Chiropractic Association’s Backpack Awareness Week begins Aug. 2 and

continues through Aug. 7. Patients are encouraged to bring a backpack for donation and learn more

about proper backpack use. Chatfield said, “I am so grateful to have the opportunity to use my

knowledge and passion to help those who give back to the community.”

Last fall, Chatfield held a canned food drive, which offered patients the same benefits of this

year’s donated backpacks. The Thanksgiving canned food drive brought in more than 670 pounds of

canned food items and Chatfield wants to once again give back to the community.

Back and Neck Care Center of Bedford is located at 2803 Central Drive in Bedford.

Patients can call 817-283-6100 to secure an appointment time. Visit www.drchatfield.com for more

Backpack Safety Facts

Possible Problems Caused by Improper Backpack Use

A child’s backpack should weigh no more than 15 percent of the child’s total body weight.

The backpack should have wide padded straps that distribute the backpack’s weight evenly over the child’s shoulders, rather than thin straps that dig in to the child’s shoulders.

Backpacks with waist belts are ideal because they help distribute the backpack’s weight through the hips.

The backpack’s straps should be adjusted so the backpack sits in the middle of the child’s back.

Backpacks with padded backs are beneficial in relieving some of the backpack’s pressure.

Backpacks that are too heavy may cause children to lean too far forward and then strain their neck to look up, giving them a rounded upper-back and possible nerve damage in their neck.

Heavy backpacks may cause children to lean backward from the weight, which can cause a swayed lower back posture and stress fractures in the spine.

If a backpack is worn on one shoulder, it may cause children to have tilted posture and experience neck pain.3

Subject: Bedford Chiropractor Helps Kids with Backpack Safety

Dear Lindsay,

I recently watched your story about pedometers in the Plano Independent School District and how they are helping kids stay fit. I especially liked the way you framed the story as a health and fitness story, rather than simply a story about education. Your interviews were interesting and displayed relevant, first-person opinions about the benefits of the new pedometers.

I have another story that you may be interested in that deals with child health. To help area children prepare for a healthy and safe new school year, Dr. Richard Chatfield, of Back and Neck Care Center of Bedford, will be holding a free spinal assessment day for all children Aug. 7 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The day rounds out the American Chiropractic Association’s Backpack Awareness Week, which Chatfield is observing by giving free adjustments to current patients who bring in a new backpack for donation and free new patient assessments to new patients who bring a backpack to be donated.

I would be happy to help you arrange interviews with Chatfield, find a family who has experienced problems with backpack use, find children to model safe backpack use or even help you schedule a trip to an area store with Chatfield to examine safe and unsafe backpacks. I would also be happy to help with any other arrangements.

Please let me know if you are interested in this story and contact me if you need any other information.

Thank you,

Taylor [email protected]
