The Bachelor of Design degree offers three specialisations: Fashion Design, Interior Design and Creative Direction & Styling. The degree consists of six study periods in a trimester model and is completed within 2 years. Students undertake five subjects each study period as follows:

Design ContextDesign Context looks at historical, cultural and social influences that impact on contemporary design practices. Students relate their research to their chosen specialisation and how the relationship of culture, history and marketplace informs design and designers today.

Digital DesignDigital Design focuses on visual communication through print and digital media. This area of study examines the principles of communication realised through effective and innovative visual outcomes.

Illustration for DesignIllustration for Design focuses on communication techniques relevant to the specialisation of choice. A diverse range of mediums are investigated, used and mastered to successfully communicate design intent through illustration.

Design MethodsDesign Methods investigates and interrogates design innovation in your chosen specialisation area of Fashion Design, Interior Design or Creative Direction & Styling. Materiality is explored to aid design innovation.

Design WorkshopDesign Workshop supports students through the realisation of their 2D design to a 3D prototype. This area of study provides students with the opportunity to integrate and apply their skills and knowledge from all other subject areas. Discipline specific technical practices are developed in the design workshop.

Why Study Fashion Design at Whitehouse?

Centering on innovative and conceptual design, Fashion Design offers a comprehensive design education for ambitious individuals looking for a specialist career within the fashion design industry. Our philosophy is to create a learning environment in which innovation and originality are nurtured within the full spectrum of fashion design and marketing practice. We aim to produce versatile fashion designers, who are able to solve problems creatively while drawing on a deep knowledge of their chosen field. A critical understanding of the social, economic and cultural factors influencing their professional environment is explored during their studies.

The Bachelor of Design, Fashion Design, is for students who want to pursue careers as innovative designers. It sets out to deliver a clear understanding of generating, developing and realising a variety of creative womenswear, menswear and accessory ideas to a professional standard.

Students are encouraged to develop their personal design vision within the context of an existing and expanding national and international fashion market, that incorporates both classic and innovative design concepts. Throughout the course, the focus is on achieving the professionalism, innovation and creativity to develop and realise your design ideas. The diversity of the fashion industry is conveyed through a varied curriculum, targeted projects and the guidance of established and visiting lecturers who are specialists in this sector.

Fashion Design students will undertake the following five subjects each study period: • Design Methods • Design Workshop • Digital Design • Illustration for Design • Design Context

Students will develop skills sets within the following areas ;• Design and critical thinking • Illustration; fashion illustration styles and technical specification drawing • Digital; Adobe Creative Cloud programs such as Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, StyleCAD, web and film related programs• Flat pattern cutting, modeling on the stand, garment construction, tailoring processes and finishing, technical specification, illustration and presentation, textile exploration, print making, marketing & branding• Professional practice skills

Why Study Creative Direction & Styling at Whitehouse?

The Bachelor of Design, Creative Direction & Styling, is for students who want to pursue a career as a highly skilled stylist with the ability to create new narratives covering both creative and operational strategies in the contemporary fashion, food, interiors and event styling industries.

With recognised top level instruction and learning environments which invite experimentation and exploratory creative practice, our graduates are ready to begin their career as influencers, innovators, stylists and creative directors in industries such as fashion, events, food and interiors.

The Creative Direction & Styling specialisation is underpinned by core graphic design principles and skills for the styling of people and spaces, photography and the presentation of ideas for magazine and publishing within print and digital formats. Graduates will have professionally developed their personal design philosophy, team leadership skills and the ability to creatively direct unique and innovative design outcomes.

This specialisation also covers key business skills including copywriting, PR and media planning, fashion and event production management, business planning, time management and budgeting. Cultural studies in the history of art, design, dress, fashion and lifestyle culture, provide the necessary skills to make a critical assessment of a brand or client.

Creative Direction & Styling students will undertake the following five subjects each study period: • Design Methods • Design Workshop • Digital Design • Illustration for Design • Design Context

Students will develop skills sets within the following areas ; • Design and critical thinking • Illustration; multidisciplinary illustration styles • Digital; Adobe Creative Cloud programs such as Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, web and film related programs• Image creation; fashion, food, interior, event concepts, visual merchandising and product design, sourcing and creative direction• Professional practice skills

Why Study Interior Design at Whitehouse?

The Bachelor of Design, Interior Design, focuses on a diverse range of interior design areas including; residential interior design, furniture and installation design, retail interior design, community landscape design and commercial office interior design.

Whitehouse offers an intensive immersion into materials research and exploration in the process of designing new, or transforming existing buildings, furniture and objects. Interior Design looks not only at the application of surface materials but considers a more holistic approach to understanding the design of usable spaces.

Students investigate some of the most important questions facing designers today, from how to take advantage of changing technologies and new materials, to how to respond to variable economic conditions and evolving lifestyles within commercial, residential and corporate projects.

In the studio, students use digital and manual means to research and recommend design alterations and renovations that give existing buildings new life. Studios focus on a wide range of approaches, from domestic to retail design, to issues of preservation and conservation.

Interior Design students will undertake the following five subjects each study period: • Design Methods • Design Workshop • Digital Design • Illustration for Design • Design Context

Students will develop skills sets within the following areas ;• Design and critical thinking • Illustration; sketching to fully rendered perspectives • Model making; presentation model making, process model making and furniture ergonomics• CAD; guided ArchiCAD training • Digital; Adobe Creative Cloud programs such as Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, web and film related programs• Technical documentation; interior design documentation, construction and regulations • Professional practice skills

Studying at Whitehouse

Admission Requirements for Domestic StudentsAdmission into the Bachelor of Design is based on a combination of academic performance and creative potential. You must satisfy at least one of the following five entry requirements to be eligible for admission into this course:• NSW Higher School Certificate, or Victorian Certificate of Education or equivalent with an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) of 67.95; OR• Recognised Tertiary Preparation Certificate; OR• Certificate IV level or higher Vocational qualification; OR• Completion of at least one year full-time study or equivalent in a degree course at a higher education institution; OR• Professional practice within the creative industries as supported by a career statement and resume with a detailed work history including references.

Original copies of academic transcripts must be cited. If you do not meet any of the five minimum entry requirements, you may be able to apply for admission under special adjustment factors including being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander decent, work or life experience, equity adjustment, or completion of creative arts subjects or VET for Senior School Students.

Admission Requirements for International StudentsWhitehouse Institute of Design, Australia is pleased to welcome international students to its campuses in Sydney and Melbourne. Whitehouse has a diverse student community with students coming from all over Australia and from various international destinations. It is advisable that international students are familiar with the admission requirements, course structure, tuition fees and Whitehouse policies before lodging an application to study. To Apply: • Read the Bachelor of Design course information and Application Guide on the website • Complete an online Application Form via the Whitehouse website (direct applications only) • Submit a copy of the following required documents with your online Application Form: > Passport or Birth Certificate. > Resume / CV. > Your latest Academic Transcripts (High School Report, HSC/VCE Results or Highest Qualification Achieved). > Creative Portfolio (6-8 pieces of original work in any medium). > Motivational Statement (300 words, please see Interview & Portfolio Guide)A portfolio of creative work to demonstrate your creative talents is required with your application. This will be assessed to determine your suitability for admission into this course, and where there are more applicants than study places available, will be used to rank your application.

Financial AssistanceFEE-HELP is an Australian Government loan given to eligible fee paying students to help pay part or all of their tuition fees. Students may borrow up to the full amount of the tuition fee charged by Whitehouse for each unit of study. Eligible students must be an Australian citizen or the holder of a permanent humanitarian visa and a resident in Australia for the duration of their studies. Tuition AssuranceWhitehouse has met the tuition assurance requirements of the Higher Education Support Act 2003 (HESA) and complies with the requirements of the Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000 (ESOS) and the Tuition Protection Service (TPS). The TPS is a placement and refund service for international students. Whitehouse is also a member of the Australian Council for Private Education and Training (ACPET).

Accreditation The Whitehouse Institute of Design, Australia is a registered private provider of higher education by the Tertiary Education Quality Standards Agency (TEQSA). The Institute is approved to deliver the accredited Bachelor of Design with specialisations in Fashion Design, Interior Design and Creative Direction & Styling to local students in Victoria and New South Wales and international students.
