Mr. Park: “Thanks but why am I lucky?”

History of NAAPID

Joe Dulin, former principal of Roberto Clemente High School originated the idea of NAAPID. “The Million Man March challenged us to go back to our communities and promote a better quality of life...in accepting the challenge, this day was conceived to promote a higher standard of education for African American youngsters. Studies have shown that parental involvement is a positive force in the academic success of children.”

eveN ThOuGh we have only had one full week of school this month, the art room has been a very busy space lately: clay projects, stuffed crea-tures, paper mache figures, and many new lessons. Let me tell you more…

After I finish writing this entry, I will be attending Mrs. Smith’s kindergarten class art auction benefiting the Humane Soci-ety tonight. My students have worked so hard at creating all types of artwork to raise money for this fine cause. Each student has a piece to sell. Along with her class, all kindergarteners have worked on Snowy Day pictures, and Piet Mondrian inspired col-lages, along with painting and drawing projects inspired by Eric Carle.

First graders and third grad-ers have been creating and glazing clay projects – a stu-dent favorite medium! Both of these grades have had to miss precious art times due to snow days, holidays and teacher workdays. We will be working extra hard in the next couple of weeks to try and catch up.

Second graders have been making “snow angel” collag-es inspired after reading the book, A Perfect Day. These winter inspired artworks will hopefully be completed and hung in time for Brr Fest.

Fourth graders have finished up their zany James Rizzi inspired cities, and they also created artist inspired snow-men. Each student drew from a hat the name of an artist. After doing research on their artist, they created a snowmen decorated in the style of the artist. They have just started the process of creating a pa-per mache action figure. This involves a rather ooey, goo-ey mess that some students absolutely love while others – not so much!

Fifth graders are finishing up sewing their fabulous stuffed creations. Most students had never sewn before and they really seemed to enjoy the process. Many made several if they had time, and told me they want to continue sewing at home. They had to create a pattern, cut it out, sew, dec-orate, and stuff. They turned out absolutely adorable!

Along with all the fabulous artwork my students have been creating in this New Year, all my classes are reviewing, practicing, and fine–tuning our art classroom expectations. For everyone to be successful I have 3 main behavior expec-tations for all my students: listening, being respectful, and working quietly. And as always, I am extremely proud of my creative, hard working, and resourceful students.

Artfully yours,

Kim Furey

Spotlight on Second GradeIn Vocal Music Humanities our second graders have been studying the Science of Musical Sound. This unit follows the classroom Science of Sound study. There are wonderful opportunities for the children to review, extend and solidify their sci-entific understandings of sound. Please ask your child the 3 Laws of Pitch. Do they remember? 1. Pitch is the high and low of sound. 2. Pitch match-es size. 3. Small is high and large is low.

Can they give you examples of size’s impact on pitch? They are also learning about the organi-zation of pitch in scale. In Vocal Music they will have the opportunity to sing the 8 note scale with solfege syllables (Do, Re, Mi, ...) and use the Curw-en hand syllables. Ask them about the Bear Hunt!

Spotlight on Fourth GradeIn Vocal Music our fourth graders are busily preparing their musical to be performed Feb. 12. Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters is a popular story book that has skillfully been turned into a musical. We are thrilled with the kids’ initial enthusiasm and creativity!

Spotlight on KindergartenKindergartners have been developing beautiful singing voices! They have a long list of repertoire and can readily demonstrate steady beat. We love to act out stories to music, move the way the mu-sic moves, and even play instruments! Please feel free to visit your child’s music class. They’d love it!

last box top drive of the year! It’s Box Tops submission time! Box tops are a great way to help earn money for bach school with very little effort required. If each stu-dent in the school brought in 25 Box Tops, we would earn $1000!

please watch your child’s back-pack for a box top collection Sheet. This year we’d like to create a friendly competition and see which classroom can bring in the most box tops by Friday , February 13.

tape or glue box tops on a collec-tion sheet or simply send in a bag uncounted. we’ll do the work!

the winning classroom will decide with their teacher on a reward whether it be extra recess minutes or a pj day!

earth-friendly help needed!help our composting efforts The Bach School students and staff do a fantastic job collecting compost every day, and minimizing our waste by putting compostables in a separate compost area.

We are in desperate need of a parent to take over the task of turning the compost, adding the necessary ingredients, and helping to make the compost ready to put in our gardens.

We thank Mark Lee for doing this job for quite some time, and are looking for someone to take it over. If you are interested in taking on this won-derful earth-friendly task, please contact Robin Gleason or Tina Ezekiel.
