gordon-conwell theological seminarySouth Hamilton, Massachusetts
Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary has a rich heritage. Its roots are located in two institutions which have long provided evangelical leadership for the Christian church in a variety of ministries. One institution was founded in 1884 by Russell Conwell, a Baptist minister in Philadelphia. The school later developed into the well-known Temple University. Conwell School of Theology, now a part of Gordon-Conwell, functioned as a unit of Temple University between the years 1960-1969. Gordon Divinity School, on the other hand, grew out of the Boston Missionary Training School, which was established in 1889 by a group of ministers who had a deep concern for missions abroad and in New England urban centers. Upon the death of the Rev. A.J. Gordon, prominent Baptist minister and founding leader, the institution was given his name.
In 1969, Conwell School of Theology and Gordon Divinity School, through the initiative of Rev. Billy Graham, united. Dr. Harold John Ockenga, long-time pastor of Park Street Church in Boston, became the first president of this new institution. He continued to give leadership to the seminary until his retirement in 1979. In July of 1981, Dr. Robert E. Cooley was appointed the second presi-dent of the seminary, became chancellor of the seminary in 1997, and now serves as president emeri-tus. Elected Gordon-Conwell’s third president in 1997, Dr. Walter C. Kaiser, Jr. retired on June 30, 2006, after nine years of dedicated service, and was followed briefly by Dr. James Emery White. Dr. Haddon W. Robinson was appointed interim president in May 2007, and was succeeded by Dr. Den-nis P. Hollinger in August 2008.
The purpose of the seminary is to equip persons for leadership in a variety of ministries in Christ’s name. The times in which we live demand Christian workers who have an unshakable conviction regarding the authority and trustworthiness of Scripture, a sure grasp of the responsibilities of min-istry and a firm sense of calling to be God’s servants in the world. Toward these ends, the seminary has structured its degree programs: the Master of Arts (with concentrations in areas of theology and Bible), Master of Arts (Religion), Master of Arts in Educational Ministries, Master of Arts in Counseling, Master of Arts in World Missions and Evangelism, Master of Arts in Spiritual Forma-tion, Master of Arts in Urban Ministry Leadership, Master of Divinity, Master of Theology and the Doctor of Ministry. The seminary offers this variety of training programs because contemporary ministry requires specialized studies and skills.
The Lord has prospered this institution with trustees who are firm in their witness and support, faculty members widely recognized for their academic acumen and pastoral emphasis, a skilled group of staff members known among us for their dedication and competence and a large student body whose calling and enthusiasm strongly benefit the school. The alumni now number more than 10,000 persons serving in numerous denominations all over the world.
With the Apostle John we say, “This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” (I John 1:5-7)

in christ alone
keith getty & stuart townendccli 1212977
In Christ alone; my hope is found,He is my light, my strength, my song;
This cornerstone, this solid ground,Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.What heights of love, what depths of peace,When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My Comforter–my All in AllHere in the love of Christ I stand.
In Christ alone who took on flesh,Fullness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness,Scorned by the ones He came to save.
Till on that cross as Jesus died,The wrath of God was satisfied,For ev'ry sin on Him was laid–
Here in the death of Christ I live.
There in the ground His body lay,Light of the world by darkness slain:Then bursting forth in glorious day,Up from the grave He rose again!
And as He stands in victory,Sin's curse has lost its grip on me;
For I am His and He is mine–Bought with the precious blood of Christ.
No guilt in life, no fear in death–This is the pow'r of Christ in me;
From life's first cry to final breath,Jesus commands my destiny.
No pow'r of hell, no scheme of man,Can ever pluck me from His hand;Till He returns or calls me home–
Here in the pow'r of Christ I'll stand.
my jesus, i love thee
william r. featherston, 1846-1873gordon 11.11.11.11.
adoniram j. gordon, 1836-1895
My Jesus, I love thee, I know thou art mine;For thee all the follies of sin I resign;
My gracious Redeemer, my Savior art thou:If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, ‘tis now.
I love thee because thou has first loved me,And purchased my pardon on Calvary’s tree;
I love thee for wearing the thorns on thy brow:If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, ‘tis now.
I’ll love thee in life, I will love thee in death,And praise thee as long as thou lendest me breath;And say when the death-dew lies cold on my brow:
If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, ‘tis now.
In mansions of glory and endless delight,I’ll ever adore thee in heaven so bright;
I’ll sing with the glittering crown on my brow:If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, ‘tis now.
may the road rise to meet you
james e. moore(traditional gaelic blessing)
May the road rise to meet you,may the wind be always at your back,
may the sun shine warm upon your face,the rain fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again, until we meet againmay God hold you in the palm of his hand.
May the sun make your days bright,may the stars illuminate your nights,
may the flowers bloom along your path,your house stand firm against the storm.
And until we meet again, until we meet againmay God hold you in the palm of his hand.

Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart,Naught be all else to me, save that thou art;Thou my best thought, by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.
Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true word,I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord;Thou my great Father, and I thy true son,Thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one.
Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,Thou mine inheritance, now and always;
Thou and thou only, first in my heart,High King of heaven, my treasure thou art.
High King of heaven, my victory won,May I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heav’n’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,Still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

Guide me, O thou great Jehovah, Pilgrim through this barren land;I am weak, but thou art mighty– Hold me with thy pow’rful hand:Bread of heaven, Bread of heaven,
Feed me till I want no more, Feed me till I want no more.
Open now the crystal fountain, Whence the healing stream doth flow;
Let the fire and cloudy pillar Lead me all my journey through:Strong Deliv’rer, strong Deliv’rer,
Be thou still my strength and shield, Be thou still my strength and shield
When I tread the verge of Jordan, Bid my anxious fears subside;
Bear me through the swelling current, Land me safe on Canaan’s side:
Songs of praises; songs of praisesI will ever give to thee, I will ever give to thee.
amazing grace
john newton, 1725-1807 | john p. rees, 1828-1900, st. 5amazing grace c.m. | american melody
carrell and clayton’s “virginia harmony,” 1831 | harm. by edwin o. excell, 1851-1921
Amazing Grace! how sweet the sound–That saved a wretch like me!I once was lost but now am found, Was blind but now I see.
‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved;How precious did that grace appear, The hour I first believed!
The Lord has promised good to me, His word my hope secures;He will my shield and portion be, As long as life endures.
Thru many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come;‘Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home.
When we’ve been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun,We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise, Then when we’d first begun.

academic gowns and hoods
In American higher education, master’s gowns are characterized by a long flap, which hangs down from the end of each sleeve. Doctoral gowns have three velvet stripes on the upper sleeves and velvet on the front panel. Sometimes the gowns are of distinctive colors to represent the school. In Gordon-Conwell’s tradition, the gowns are black.
The color of the hood trim reflects the general field of the degree. White trim designates the arts in general, blue represents education and red reflects theology and ministry. The width of the velvet trim designates whether the degree is a master’s or a doctorate, with a wider band being used for the doctorate.
The colors on the back inside part of the hood are always the official colors of the school. In Gordon-Conwell’s case, the colors are royal blue and white. Our tradition also calls for two white chevrons instead of one large one.

but i press on to take hold of that for which christ jesus took
hold of me. i do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of
it. but one thing i do: forgetting what is behind and straining
toward what is ahead, i press on toward the goal to win the prize
for which god has called me heavenward in christ jesus. all of us
who are mature should take such a view of things.
