LEADING THE REFRIGERATION INDUSTRYTHROUGH ENGINEERING AND EXPERIENCE

Since its founding in 1938, Baltimore Aircoil Company hasspecialized in the design and manufacture of evaporativecondensing equipment and has become a worldwide leaderin this field. B.A.C.’s continuing program of engineeringresearch has resulted in many design innovations, includingthe V-Line in 1968, the VX-Line in 1978, the BaltibondCorrosion Protection System in 1982, the ICE CHILLERThermal Storage Units in 1984 and the Low Profile SeriesV-Line in 1988.In 1995, once again, B.A.C. raised the standard in heattransfer technology with the CXV Series EvaporativeCondenser, a product which combines counterflow andcrossflow cooling tower and evaporative condenser techno-logy for enhanced evaporative condenser performance.

Evaporative condenser research and product developmentprograms are conducted at the world’s largest EvaporativeCondenser Test Facility located at the Corporate Researchand Development Laboratory. Here, B.A.C. engineers andtechnicians can simulate the broad range of environmentaland system operating conditions that are encountered byunits in actual use. Tests are conducted on equipmentranging in size from small prototype modules used inconceptual development up through full-scale field-erectedunits.

EVAPORATIVE CONDENSERS

... for refrigerant condensing in mechanicalrefrigeration or industrial process systems withminimum energy requirements and low lifecycle costs.

ENERGY SAVINGS

Evaporative condensers offer energy savings by provid-ing lower system power consumption than conventionalair-cooled and water-cooled condensing systems.

COMPARED TO AIR-COOLED :Evaporative condenser capacity is a function of ambientwet bulb temperature while air-cooled condensercapacity is a function of ambient dry bulb temperature.Since design wet bulb temperatures are generally 8° to12°C lower than design dry bulb temperatures, condensing temperatures for systems using evaporativecondensers can be 8° to 12°C less, resulting incompressor and system power savings of up to 30 %.

COMPARED TO SHELL AND TUBE CONDENSER/COOLING TOWER SYSTEMS :The evaporative condenser rejects heat directly to theambient air in one step of heat transfer. In the shell-and-tube condenser/cooling tower system, heat mustbe first transferred to the cooling water by the con-denser, and then to the atmosphere by the coolingtower. The single heat transfer step in evaporativecondensers provides lower condensing temperaturesand compressor power savings of up to 15 %.

CXV : 320 to 2070 kW42 models

With the CXV Evaporative Condenser B.A.C. has raisedthe standard in heat transfer technology. The CXV-Lineoffers a low operating and maintenance cost to theowner.

LOW LIFE-CYCLE COST

is inherent in B.A.C. Evaporative Condensers.Evaporative condensers are generally lower in first costthan air-cooled condensers or shell-and-tube con-denser/ cooling tower systems. The compact designrequires less supporting steel and less space than othercondensing systems. Moreover factory-assembled sec-tional construction minimizes costly field erection time.As a result, B.A.C. Evaporative Condensers offer a lowtotal installed cost.

A proven corrosion protection system and other B.A.C.design features minimize maintenance costs.

Low first cost and low maintenance costs, combinedwith the energy saving benefits of evaporative con-densers, result in lower life-cycle costs than alternativecondensing systems.

LOCATION VERSATILITY

••COMPACT OUTDOOR - INDOOR INSTALLATION

••The ability to locate the compact VCL units in tight••locations allows designers of cooling systems to••better utilize available space. Shorter, less costly••enclosures can be used and units can be placed in••narrow set-backs or close to solid walls. Optional••discharge hoods which accelerate the air flow can••be used to further reduce space requirements.

••LOW INSTALLED HEIGHT••The VCL Evaporative Condenser is the best solution••for height sensitive solutions. The VCL design••reduces unit height by up to 2 meter compared to••other configurations. This dramatic height reduction••is due to a unique special chamber in the fan••housing that greatly enhances fan efficiency and air••distribution.

LOW INSTALLED COST

••NO FIELD ASSEMBLY••The VL Evaporative Condensers ship completely••assembled. All seams and joints are factory sealed.••No section assembly or installation and alignment of••fan motors and drives is required.

••MINIMAL RIGGING REQUIREMENTS••Because all units ship in one piece, rigging time and••costs are significantly reduced. The unit simply set••in place using conveniently located lifting devices.••(Some optional accessories require independent••lifts.)

QUIET OPERATION

••VERY LOW SOUND LEVELS••When noise criteria are stringent, the centrifugal fan••VCL units are selected to provide minimum sound••levels. The centrifugal fans with inherent low noise••characteristics will, in most cases, meet the••specified sound requirements.

••DIRECTIONAL CAPABILITY••In situations where one direction is particularly noise••sensitive, the single-fan side design allows the quiet••back panel side to be oriented toward the noise••sensitive direction. In many instances, this procedure••eliminates the need for additional acoustical••treatment.

ENGINEERED SOUND ATTENUATION

The noise generated by evaporative cooling equipmentrequires a carefull evaluation from both acoustical, thermal and cost point of view. Baltimore Aircoil has thefull capability to evaluate each individual project and topropose the most economical solution.Baltimore Aircoil sound attenuation systems are basedon data developed and verified by extensive laboratoryand field testing.

These measurements have been performed in the soundtest area at the B.A.C. Research and Develop-mentCenter. Baltimore Aircoil’s units have detailed sound datafor each model showing sound pressure level data perfrequency band for each side of the unit and soundpower level data for the complete unit.

The VXC Evaporative Condenser will meet most soundlevel criteria without additional acoustical treatment. For more noise sensitive installations VXC units can beprovided with complete factory assembled sound atten-uators for field mounting. Two standard types of attenuators, with a differentdegree in attenuation are avaible.

The CXV Evaporative Condensers can meet most soundrequirements for industrial locations because of :••directional sound emission••low noise axial fans••all mechanical equipment (motors, belts, bearings)••inside the unit.

When noise criteria are stringent, the VCL units are thebest choice to provide minimum sound levels.Their cen-trifugal fans with inherent low noise characteristics will,in most cases, meet the specified sound requirements. When even quieter operation is desired, the VCLEvaporative Condenser can be supplied withpackaged sound attenuators designed and built byB.A.C. to further reduce sound levels. Two degrees ofsound attenuation are available.

In case more stringent noise requirements are imposedfollowing sound attenuation solutions can be consi-dered :••Use of two speed fan motors for reduced fan speed••and hence lower noise levels during the night. The••lower wet bulb temperatures during the night will allow••the unit to operate at low speed.••Sound attenuators can be provided at the horizontal••air inlet side to reduce the horizontal noise emission.••Sound attenuators at the fan discharge will reduce••the sound level and, if required, direct it away from••the noise sensitive area.

EXTENDED SURFACE COILS (VXC, VCL)

BALTIGUARD DRIVE SYSTEM (VXC, VCL)

BALTIBOND Corrosion Protection System

WATER CONSERVATIONThe B.A.C. extended surface coil offers the ability tooperate units dry during off peak or winter conditions.During these periods the recirculating pump is shut offand the pan drained which saves water and eliminateswater treatment costs.

ENERGY SAVINGSAt or near design conditions and full load the coil oper-ates wet to achieve the full benefits of evaporativecooling by removing both latent and sensible heat.

ENERGY SAVINGSThe BALTIGUARD Drive System is an energy savingoption. It consists of two standard 1500 rpm motorsand drive assemblies. A full size fan motor and drives

As the load reduces and/or the dry bulb drops a suitablyselected extended surface coil will be able to reject theheat in the sensible or dry mode.Typically these periodsof reduced load or low wet bulb will be 50 % or more ofthe operating hours.

EXTENDED SURFACE COIL CONSTRUCTIONThe B.A.C. extended surface coil comprises a speciallywound, footless steel fin on some or all of the tubesmaking up the coil. The size and spacing of the finshave been designed by B.A.C. to give the optimum cost/performance ratio. The complete coil assembly is hotdip galvanized after fabrication giving excellent corro-sion resistance and a powerful mechanical and thermalbond between fin and tube.

EXTENDED SURFACE COIL SELECTIONThe extended surface coil is sized to achieve as manyhours of dry operation as economically possible.B.A.C.’s selection procedure is able to predict perfor-mance in both wet and dry modes over all operatingconditions.

are installed at one end of the mechanical equipmentsupport and a lower kW motor, approximately 1/3 of thestandard motor kW is installed on the other end of themechanical equipment support. Drives for the lower kWmotor are sized for approximately 2/3 of design fanspeed. This arrangement allows the unit to be operatingat either full or 2/3 fan speed.

STANDBY PROTECTIONSignificant energy savings are achieved when operatingat the low kW motor during periods of reduced load, andstandby protection is afforded with the use of two stan-dard single-speed motors.

For corrosive environments and/or longer equipmentlife, all B.A.C. Evaporative Condensers can be providedwith the BALTIBOND Corrosion Protection System. The BALTIBOND Corrosion Protection System is apolymerized metal created by a unique manufacturingprocess which fusebonds a special hybrid polymer tohot-dip galvanized steel. The BALTIBOND CorrosionProtection System is applied on all individual compo-nents of the entire unit before assembly.(B.A.C. Bulletin S680/3-1 provides further details.)

PAN WATER HEATERS (VXC, VCL, CXV)Factory-installed heaters are available to prevent freezing ofthe pan water in an idle unit at below freezing ambienttemperatures. Heaters are selected to maintain pan watertemperatures of approximately 4°C.They protect the water inthe pan only and do not provide freeze protection for thepump and pump piping.

REMOTE SUMP (VXC, VCL, CXV)Another most satisfactory method to protect the pan wateragainst freezing is the use of an auxiliary sump with a spraywater pump located within a heated space. The condenserpan drains to the indoor sump whenever the recirculatingpump is not operating. This permits dry operation of thecondenser when the load and ambient temperatures are low.

ELECTRIC WATER LEVEL CONTROL (VXC, VCL, CXV)A factory-set electric water level control system can besubstituted for the standard mechanical make-up valve toassure a constant water level. It is recommended for use onunits that will require year-round operation in a freezingclimate.

CAPACITY CONTROL DAMPERS (VXC, VCL)Modulating capacity control dampers are available and arerecommended when close control of the condensingpressure is required.

BOTTOM PANELS AND SCREENS (VXC)Factory-installed bottom panels available for VXCcondensers are required when the intake air is ducted to theunit.Air inlet screens can be factory-installed on the bottom of theVX units when location makes this additional protectiondesirable or necessary for safety purposes.

INTAKE & DISCHARGE DUCTS (VCL)For indoor installations, intake and discharge ducts are avail-able. Access doors are provided for easy access for mainte-nance. Ducts add static resistance and fan motors must beincreased one size.

MULTIPLE CIRCUIT COILS (VXC, VCL, CXV)For applications where several evaporative cooling and/ orcondensing needs exist, a single evaporative coil unit can beselected with the coil circuits isolated for each individualload.

DESUPERHEATERS (VXC)Desuperheaters are available for VXC and VCL Evapo-rative Condensers for ammonia (R-717) installations withreciprocating compressors.

DISCHARGE HOODS (VXC, VCL)Baltimore Aircoil offers a full line of standard straight andtapered discharge hoods for all Series VXC and VCL units. The tapered hoods are designed to increase the dischargeair velocity to avoid recirculation in extremely tightenclosures or to elevate the tower discharge above adjacentwalls. One size larger fan motors and drives must be usedwhen tapered hoods are provided.

MULTIPLE FAN MOTORS FOR CAPACITY CONTROL (CXV)Units with multiple fan motors are supplied with an internalbaffle system which includes a solid partition that extendsfrom the pan bottom vertically through the heat transfersurfaces. This system allows individual fan motors to becycled on and off independently without harmful effects of airby-pass within the unit. All multiple fan units can be suppliedwith independent fan motors, drive assemblies, and internalbaffles to allow independent operation of each fan. This optionallows the use of fan cycling for capacity control.

EXTERNAL SERVICE PLATFORM WITH LADDER (CXV)A factory-assembled external platform with an access ladderand safety railings is available. The external serviceplatform option provides one means of safe and convenientaccess for the maintenance of the water distribution pipingand spray nozzles.

INTERNAL SERVICE PLATFORM (CXV)A factory assembled galvanized steel internal working plat-form and ladder provides a permanent working surface forservicing the fan drive system.

AIR INLET SCREEN AND SUMP COVER PLATE (CXV)An air inlet screen can be factory-installed at the air intakeside above the coil section. A sump cover plate is also avail-able to help prevent debris from entering the condenser.
