sebamed Medicinal Baby Care | First days at home

First days at home Finding the right rhythm for both of you.You have been in hospital for seve-ral days, and you and your babyprobably know each other quitewell by now and have settled intoa routine. Things will change a bitwhen you get back to everyday lifeat home. The quickest way of fin-ding the right rhythm for both ofyou is for the baby to be the mostimportant person in the family, withhis needs and desires at the fore-front. So do not try to force yourbaby to eat, sleep and play whenit suits you. Feed him and play withhim when he is awake, and usethe time that he is asleep to rest ordo other things. It is true that thiscan be quite tiring to begin with. But if you make sure that your babyalways has what he needs - food, care and above all lots of love andattention - everything will soon settledown.

When you first go home you will often feel exhausted and in need of a little tender love. Let your man giveyou a hand! Ideally you should both have time to get to know your babytogether.

Let the housework wait.Don’t worry if things get a bit untidyaround the house. Get used to lifewith your baby. Do not over-exertyourself, just do what really has to bedone. If you set yourself impossiblegoals you will only get anxious, andyour baby will pick this up.

sebamed Medicinal Baby Care | The baby and his needs

The baby and his needsInexperienced parents can be drivento distraction by a newborn child thatwill not stop crying even though hehas just been fed and changed. Youwill feel uncertain, helpless and mighteven imagine that your baby is cryingsimply to spite you. But even if thenoise makes you feel at the end ofyour tether, just think of this: yourbaby’s voice is his only means ofcommunication. If you observe yourbaby carefully you will notice that hehas different ways of expressingdispleasure or discomfort. He makesfaces, throws his arms and legs aboutand gives a few grunts, before indesperation starting to cry. But oftenparents do not respond until the criesare loud and intense, and by thisstage the baby has worked himselfup to such a pitch that it is hard forthe parents to work out what iswrong. And it will take much longerto calm him down again. Researchhas shown that if the cries of a new-born baby are ignored, he will latertend to cry much more frequently andfor much longer periods.

If you are able to, you should respondas soon as you notice that your babyneeds something. That does not meanthat you are spoiling him - not in thefirst six months at any rate. A youngbaby cannot do anything for himselfand is dependent on other people. Ifhis needs are not sufficiently met hewill feel helpless and neglected, andcannot trust the people around him.Trust and the feeling of being loved areimportant foundations for the emotionaldevelopment of your child.

Baby’s crying. What’s the matter? He is hungry:Hunger is the main reason why babies cry. A dummy will not help. If yourbaby is crying because he is hungry, he will not stop until you have fed him.

He is thirsty:A bottle of milk is not a good way of overcoming thirst. If your baby has finis-hed his bottle and is still whining, he might be thirsty and would appreciatesome fennel tea or any other type of herbal tea for babies.

He is in pain:Some babies get „three-month colic“, which stops when they are three monthsold. Babies with this condition will pull their legs up towards their abdomenwhen crying, their faces are twisted with pain and they are very hard to con-sole. The best thing to do is to walk around holding them in the „flying posi-tion“: hold the baby horizontally, face down, place one hand between his legs and use the other arm to support his head and arms. Babieswith this condition also like having their tummies massaged with gentle, circular motions.

His bottom is sore:A sore bottom is painful for a baby. Some babies cry as soon as they have awet or dirty nappy. To prevent a sore bottom, change your baby regularlyand sometimes leave him without a nappy so that the skin can dry properly.

He is overtired:Many babies cry when they are tired. They are sometimes afraid to go frombeing awake to being asleep. They need loving reassurance.

He’s frightened or over-stimulated:Babies do not like excessive stimulation. This does not just mean sudden loudnoises, but also well-intentioned playing like tickling games or excessivedemonstrations of affection if they are given at the wrong time.

He wants a cuddle:If everything is all right but your baby is still crying, he may just want to benear you. To feel safe and loved in your arms, or just a bit of attention. Meet his needs if you can.

sebamed Medicinal Baby Care | Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is good for youand your baby.Mother’s milk is the healthiest andbest food you can give your baby. Itcontains everything he needs, at leastin the first four months of his life. Manydoctors, nutritionists and psychologistsbelieve that there are good reasonsfor breastfeeding your baby.

Your milk is specially designed for your baby’s sensitive digestive system and contains all the essential nutrients.

It contains antibodies that protect your baby against infection. The yellow colostrum produced in the first five days after birth is especi-ally rich in these antibodies.

Breastfeeding is an excellent way of developing the strong emotionalbond between mother and child. Gentle skin contact is wonderful for both of you.

Another advantage for the mother is that breastfeeding helps the womb return to its normal size.

Breastfeeding need not be a problem. It is important for your baby to drinkall the milk in one breast before youburp him and move him over to theother side. When you next feed him, start him on the second breast, whichoften still contains some milk from lasttime. This is the best way of avoidinga painful accumulation of milk in thebreast, which can happen if the milkducts are only partially emptied whenyour baby feeds. If breastfeeding ispainful because your nipples aresore, feed your baby more often butfor shorter periods. Express a littlemilk with your hand before puttinghim to the breast, as this means thathe does not have to suck so hard andyour breasts will not be so sore. Afterfeeding, allow the remaining milk and your baby’s saliva to dry on thenipple as this helps prevent soreness.

Weaning: handle with careWeaning should be a very gradual process because your baby’s digesti-ve organs have to adjust to the newfood. If you wean him too fast, hemight suffer from stomach pains andcolic. Depending on how old yourbaby is, gradually replace one feeda day by a bottle or baby food.Increase the amount of solid food yougive him until he no longer wants tobe breastfed.

Follow these simple rules to get off to a good start:

It is best for your baby to be placed at your breastimmediately after the birth while you are still in the deli-very room. This is because suckling at the breast tellsyour body to start producing milk.

Your milk production will rise more quickly if you feedyour baby frequently. If you do not have much milk tobegin with, you can stimulate production by placinghim at your breast more often. If you feed him ondemand from the very beginning – this means that youdo not feed him at set times but whenever he is hungry– a pattern will soon be established.

Healthy babies with a normal birth weight should notbe given bottles as well, even if you are short of milkfrom time to time. This is because as soon as a baby isfed from a bottle he will start to prefer the bottle as itrequires less effort on his part. So long as he is continu-ing to gain weight you have no need to worry.Remember that in the first three months of life a babyshould gain about 200 grams a week.

Do not lose heart if you are still having problems breast-feeding your baby in the first six weeks after the birth. Itcan take about that long for your milk production to fallinto line with your baby’s appetite.

Emotional factors can have a significant impact on yourmilk secretion reflex. You need plenty of peace andcalm especially in the first few weeks if you are to bre-astfeed successfully.

sebamed Medicinal Baby Care | Healthy eating

It’s quite normal to be a fewpounds heavier at this time. Most women are slightly heavier afterbirth than before they became preg-nant – the difference is usually about3 to 4 kilos. Of course you wouldlike to lose this excess weight as soon as possible, but take it slowly. Youshould not go on a strict diet whileyou are breastfeeding your baby, because he depends on your milk for all his essential nutrients. And youalso need a healthy, nutritious dietnow. The first few months of yourbaby’s life will be a wonderful but strenuous time, so you need all yourstrength. And do not forget that it iseasier to maintain weight loss if youtake your time over losing it.

You should eat a varied diet. You should consume at least 2,000to 2,200 calories a day. Becauseyou are breastfeeding you areusing up about 600 calories morethan normal, so that brings the netfigure down to 1,400. That is nottoo much, and will help you regainyour figure. But just as in pregnan-cy, what matters is, not how muchyou eat but what you eat. Whileyou are breastfeeding you need50% more calcium, vitamin C, vita-min B2 and folic acid, and a thirdmore vitamin B6, B and E.

Your meals should include all theimportant nutrients, but should notbe too high in calories. A varied, balanced diet is the best solution, supplemented by high-quality freshproducts.

Healthy eating while breastfeeding• Full-fat milk and dairy products

such as cheese and yoghurt. These are important sources of calcium.

• Meat, poultry and fish are good sources of protein. Together with green leafy vegetables and legumes, they also provide a particulary good source of vitamin B.

• Cereal products such as porridge and wholemeal bread are rich in minerals and vitamins. They are high in fibre, helping your diges-tion.

• Salads and vegetables. Green leafy vegetables, cabbage and peppers are particularly valuable. Vegetables provide vitamins and iron.

• Plenty of fresh fruit, but preferably low-acid varieties as these are easier for your baby to tolerate.

Watch out for these foods whileyou are breastfeeding. Some foods that you eat might causeproblems for your baby while you arebreastfeeding. See how he reacts.

• He may get a skin rash if you eat certain fruits such as strawberries. Some babies also have an allergic reaction to milk and dairy pro-ducts.

• Lentils and dried beans might give your baby wind.

• If his skin is sore all of a sudden, it might be because you have eaten acidic fruits, onions or garlic.Your body needs lots of liquid.

You should drink plenty of liquid at thistime, at least two litres a day. Low-calorie drinks are best: unsweetenedherbal tea or still mineral water. If youwant to drink fruit juice, mix it withmineral water. You should avoid alco-hol as far as possible as some will betransferred to your baby in your milk. Ifyou really fancy a glass of wine orbeer, have it just after feeding yourbaby. You can drink tea and coffee inmoderation.

sebamed Medicinal Baby Care | Bottle milk

Commercial baby milk isalmost as good as mother’smilk.Although mother’s milk is undoubtedlythe best food for a baby in the firstfew weeks and months of life, mothers who do not breastfeed neednot worry nowadays. Commercialbaby milk is just as safe and healthyfor your baby. They contain the sameproportions of the principal nutrients(proteins, fats and minerals) as naturalmilk, contain all the vital additionalnutrients as well and are perfectlyhygienic. So if you do not breastfeedyour baby at all, or not all the time, you need not worry about giving hima bottle. He does not need anythingelse in the first three months of his life,so do not start to wean him until he isat least four or five months old.

Modified or partly modified milk?Modified and partly modified milk products are based on cow’s milk, and both can be given from birth. However, some doctors prefer modi-fied products for very young babies.

Modified milk . . .is most suitable in the first few monthsof life as a supplement to the breastor as the only food. Like mother’s milk, the only carbohydrate it contains islactose and it can be given on de-mand as if you were breastfeeding.

Partly modified milk . . .also contains the same principalingredients as mother’s milk, but ishigher in calories because it containsadded carbohydrates. Take care tofollow the instructions when givingyour baby partly modified milk, because otherwise you might over-feed him.

Hygiene protects against infection. The bottles and other equipment mustbe kept perfectly clean because tinybabies are still very vulnerable togerms and bacteria. Rinse out theempty bottles with water and deter-gent, rub down the teat with salt, rinse everything thoroughly in cleanwater and then sterilize. There arevarious ways of sterilizing your equip-ment: you can boil it, use the cold

sterilization method with a specialsolution or the hot sterilization methodin an electrical sterilizer that useswater vapour at 95-97°C.

Making up a feed is easy. You won’t have any difficulty inmaking up your baby’s feed. Just fol-low the instructions on the packet andmake sure your kitchen is clean. It isimportant to give exactly the amountsstated on the packet, because theyhave been calculated to give yourbaby exactly as much food as heneeds. So do not add an extraspoonful or cut the feed because youworry about your baby getting toofat. You can of course make up yourown mixture, but that is much harderbecause you need to weigh out allthe different ingredients carefullyaccording to the recipe and makesure they are well mixed.

Once the bottle is ready, check that it is not too hot. Holding it to yourcheek is not really good enough. It isbetter to squeeze a few drops ontothe inside of your wrist.

Feeding should be a quiet and tender moment.Be just as loving and tender whengiving your baby a bottle as if youwere breastfeeding him, and enjoy theintimate contact between you. Becausewhen you feed your baby, with a bott-le or with your breast, you are not justgiving him food and drink but care, love and attention as well. Your babyknows this, and so when you feed himmake sure that you have plenty of time, because if you are rushed or agitatedhe will realize this. Find a quiet placewhere you will not be disturbed and sitdown in a comfortable chair. You cannestle your baby in your left arm asyou feed, because here he can hearyour heartbeat which he will recognizefrom the time before he was born. He will then suck instinctively.

All you have to do is make sure you tiltthe bottle down wards so that the teatis always full. Otherwise your babywill drink too fast and inhale air. Oncehe has been drinking thirstily for a fewminutes, take the bottle away for aminute and murmur a few loving wordsto him. Then give him back the bottle, and when he has finished it hold himupright in your arms to burp him. Thisis very important, because the air yourbaby swallows when feeding cancause pain. If he still does not burp, lay him in his cot on his side or his sto-mach, so that he can burp himselfwithout getting hiccups.

Bottle milk is good for your baby too.

sebamed Medicinal Baby Care | Protective cleansing

Protective CleansingHow to make bath-time fun.Babies adore being bathed in nicewarm water. The pleasant, relaxingwarmth of the water reminds them ofwhen they were still in the womb, protected and able to swim around inthe amniotic fluid.

Here are a few tips to make sure thatyour baby always looks forward tobath-time:

It doesn’t really matter what time of day you bathe him. Why not waituntil the evening so that daddy canjoin in too? But never give him a bathjust after feeding him.

Be particularly careful the first timeyou bathe your baby. If he has a badexperience that time, you will need alot of patience to overcome hismistrust later on. Make sure that he

does not get water in his eyes orears, and that the water is the correcttemperature. If you can see that he istense, holding his body rigid or pul-ling away from the edge, talk to himgently to reassure him.

Always wash your baby from the topof his body to bottom for hygienicreasons.

Even tiny babies need to have theirheads washed regularly. In the firstfew weeks and months you will just need to wash his head carefullywith a little bath water. Wash the font-anella as well, otherwise brownmarks will soon appear. These are theremains of dead skin flakes andsebum secretions that are normallyremoved by washing. When yourbaby’s hair starts to thicken, use agentle children´s shampoo to wash it.

When baby comes out ofthe bath. After the bath, first snuggle yourbaby into his towel. Dry him gentlybut thoroughly, paying particularattention to the sensitive folds ofskin, tapping them with the towelto get them really dry. It is so im-portant to dry your baby becausedamp skin is a good breedingground for bacteria. If the room iswarm enough (22°C), let himwave his arms and legs aroundwith nothing on for a few minutes.Moving around in the air is goodfor his skin and helps prevent sore-ness.

Use a damp cotton wool pad tocarefully clean his eyes, startingfrom the outer edge and movingin. Do not use cotton awards toclean his ears or nose. The earshave a self-cleaning mechanismand so you do not need to cleanthe auditory canals.

You should only clean his nose ifyou can see something there, andthen you should take a damp cot-ton wool pad and shape it to fit.The only other thing to do is trimhis nails with special safety nailscissors.

sebamed Medicinal Baby Care | Protecting and caring

Why daily care is so important for your baby.Your baby needs lots of loving skincontact especially in the first fewweeks and months of his life. Bathinghim and looking after his skin is thebest opportunity for showing him howmuch you love him. Talk tenderly tohim as he lies on the changing tableand show your affection by pettingand stroking him. Impulses passthrough the skin and into the nervoussystem and the brain, so you are hel-ping his healthy physical and emotio-nal development.

What is the difference bet-ween the soft skin of a babyand that of an adult?A baby’s skin is not as resistant as anadult’s: it is up to ten times thinnerand is easily damaged. It does notyet have the natural protective acidmantle, which has a pH value of 5.5,as it is still to develop. This is whyyou must always use extra-gentlebaby care products that are designedto suit your baby’s delicate skin. These products do not draw too muchmoisture from his skin and help himdevelop his natural protective acidmantle.

How much care does yourbaby need?A bath two to three times a weekis enough. On the days that youdo not give him a bath you canwash him all over with warm waterfrom the washbasin to which youhave added a few drops of BabyBubble Bath. But of course yourbaby can have a bath every day if he particularly enjoys it.

Be prepared. Before you put him in the bath, make sure that you have everythingyou need within reach on yourchanging table for when he comesout of the water: a nappy, cleanclothes and nail scissors. If theroom is a bit chilly, warm his towelbefore you take him out of the bath. While your baby is still very tinyyou should use a separate washba-sin for his face. Fill the baby bathabout half full with warm water: thetemperature should be 36-37°C.Add special Baby Bubble Bath tothe water so that his sensitive skindoes not dry out.

What a lot of nappies a babyneeds!Babies need nappies for 27 monthson average, because it is not untiltowards the end of their second yearor more often into their third year thatthey can ask for their potty in time. And even then, accidents can hap-pen. During this time you will need tochange your baby’s nappy five or sixtimes a day.

Disposable or cloth nappies? Each type has its benefits and its drawbacks. About 80% of babieswear disposable nappies these days;one of the main reasons for this is thatthey are so handy. It is easier to dryyour baby’s bottom, so you havemore time for love and play. A goodnappy absorbs urine quickly throughthe inner lining, does not allow it toflow back and keeps it away fromyour baby’s skin.

Dry – to be happyHow to keep baby’s bottom from getting sore. The tender skin of your baby’s bottomis exposed to all sorts of irritation, because a baby will urinate andexcrete five or more times a day intohis nappy. The skin can quickly beco-me painful and inflamed. Preventionis the best approach. Change hisnappy at least every three to fourhours during the day, more often if hisbottom is already sore. Do not wakehim at night to change his nappy: heneeds his sleep. Once you havedried him, clean the skin with oil-satu-rated cotton wool or cellulose. If hehas passed a stool, wash his bottomwith plenty of water after removingmost of the faeces with the nappyyou have just taken off. Then drycarefully and apply cream, but nottoo much.

Show your baby you lovehim when you change hisnappy.Being clean and dry is not justimportant for your baby’s healthand well-being. Changing time isalso a good opportunity for tendercontact with him. This is the time forkisses and baby-talk, and someti-mes leave him without a nappy onif the room is warm enough. It isgood for his skin, and great fun foryour baby if you massage his legsat the same time.

sebamed Medicinal Baby Care | Baby’s development

Your baby is six month old amazing how much she can already doFrom a little baby to a little person.Your baby undergoes extremely rapid mental and physical growth in the first year of his life. He gains control overhis muscles, while his social beha-viour and intelligence are developingvisibly. Observing these changes isone of the greatest joys for newparents. And it is only natural to wantto compare your child’s progress withthat of his contemporaries …

Every child is different. The standard age and time indicatorsare just a guide to how rapidly achild is developing. If your child is notkeeping up, you should not immedia-tely think that he has behavioural diffi-culties. Also, do not forget that ababy can progress very quickly insome areas while being a little slowerin others.

Encourage your baby, but donot push him too hard.Never try to influence your child’sdevelopment too early and too inten-sively. You will simply damage yourrelation-ship. It is far better to observewherehe needs your help and sup-port. For instance, a brightly-colouredmobile is an excellent way of develo-ping your baby’s vision. Give him asoft, cuddly toy as soon as he canopen his hands and play with it. Atinkling rattle will help him understandwhat happens when he moves hishands. The most important thing is forhim to learn calculated behaviourfrom his „dialogue“ with you, and this should include more boisteroustouching games as well as gentle stroking and massage.

sebamed Medicinal Baby Care | Baby’s development

Foundations for your baby’ssubsequent development. We now know how important earlychildhood is for human development.Later behaviour patterns are set up inthe first twelve months of life. Yourbaby will be profoundly influenced bythe love and tenderness you showhim right from the start.

Show your baby that you love him.Your baby must feel that he is lovedand that he belongs with you. Rightfrom birth he needs to know that youare always there and will always takehis desires seriously. And that he cancount on his parents.

Tenderness makes your babymore intelligent.Skin contact helps your baby feelloved and protected. That is importantfor his physical and mental health. This is because the skin reacts tobeing stroked and massaged, passingthe impulses received on to the brain.Every tender touch makes your babymore intelligent because it stimulateshis brain. As a result of this, his braindevelops more quickly, expanding thenerve pathways and improving move-ment coordination. Most children gra-dually start to loose interest in skincontact about the time that they learnto crawl. They now want to get awayfrom their mother and discover theworld for themselves.

Talk to your baby. You should talk to your baby asoften as you can right from the start.Explain to him what you are doing, and tell him little stories. Your voiceis increasing his confidence, eventhough he does not understandwhat you are saying. On average, children whose mothers talked tothem as soon as they were bornlearn to speak earlier.

Make learning fun. From about three or four months oldyour baby will adore physicalgames. Romping, dancing andbeing thrown up in the air are allexcellent for healthy development. He starts to understand his bodybetter, and the continual repetitionhelps him to see what is going tohappen next. Action songs like „Thisis the way the ladies ride“ is highlypopular for just that reason.

Your baby must build up new experiences. At some point your baby will startto discover the world about him. Hewants to know everything about theobjects he sees in his environment. You should be delighted that yourbaby is now able to show a lively, active interest and let him get onwith exploring his world. If yourbaby is sitting quietly investigating aball of paper or his favourite toy, itwould be quite wrong to choose

What your baby needs to be happythis moment to suddenly pick him upfor a cuddle. Disturbing your childwhile he is playing deprives him ofthe opportunity to find out about theworld and develop his powers ofconcentration.

Be consistent. Set an example.Babies form their first image of theworld from their parents. Your beha-viour will determine his attitude topeople, and so it is important to beas consistent as possible. Parents whorespond to a certain behaviour oneway today and in a completely diffe-rent way tomorrow just irritate theirchild, fostering insecurity and evenfear.

Your baby needs both hisparents.A newborn baby is almost the exclusi-ve preserve of his mother for the firstfew months of his life. This means thatthe bond between mother and child isoften stronger than that between fat-her and child. But it is important forthe baby, and wonderful for the fami-ly, if a close relationship with the fat-her can be built up in the first fewmonths. This exposes the baby to asecond person in his immediate sur-roundings who is quite different inmany ways, and helps him develophis ability to relate to other people.Seeing how adults behave towardseach other can lay the foundations for

behaviour patterns. A father shouldnot simply copy what his partnerdoes, but should look after his babyin his own way. Many mothers talk totheir babies and smile at them moreoften. But fathers can have other, more active options: they hold thebaby in their arms more often andare sometimes better at more boiste-rous games. Babies are exposed to awider range of stimuli if both parentstake care of them.

sebamed Medicinal Baby Care | Baby’s health

Love is the best medicine. The most important things for a child’shealthy development are emotionalbalance, living in a complete familyand the knowledge that he is loved. On average, children who receive agreat deal of tenderness from theirparents suffer less infections. Weknow that a person’s physical state ofhealth is strongly influenced by his orher mental well-being.

Protect your baby against infection.Every newborn baby has „innate pro-tection“. During the first few months ofyour baby’s life he will be protectedagainst every disease to which youare immune. Breastfeeding prolongsthis period of protection, but it cannotguard your baby against every infec-tious disease. So take precautions ifsomeone in your baby’s immediateenvironment is ill.

Keep the room in which the sick person is staying well aired.

In the case of diseases spread by droplets, such as coughs and colds, a handkerchief placed over the nose and mouth can prevent transmission.

Wash your hands before touching the baby.

Fresh air is healthy. We know that babies who are oftenexposed to fresh air suffer fewercoughs and colds. Even very tinybabies should be taken outdoors atleast once a day. They should onlybe kept inside if the weather is verybad, i.e. temperatures less than 15°Cbelow zero, strong winds or fog, andthen air the baby’s room well. Alwayswrap your baby up warm when youtake him for a walk. Several thin lay-ers will keep him warmer than onethick garment. His ears are very sensi-tive to draughts and cold, so makesure that they are well protected. Ifyou think your baby might be toocold, feel his feet: if they are warm, everything is all right.

Your baby’s healthThe first signs of illness.Even if you are very careful yourbaby still might fall ill. A high tempe-rature is not the only sign:

Does he just not seem well? After a few weeks you know your baby so well that you know how he normally behaves. When he sleeps and for how long, what his preferred sleeping position is, if he smiles, plays with his hands or looks around with curiosity. If he is ill, you will notice a change in his behaviour. He will lose interest in many things that normally attract him and often just lies apathetically in his bed.

Has he lost his appetite or will not eat at all? Even babies who are normally good eaters often refuse food when they are ill.

Does his crying sound different? When your baby cries because he is in pain, you will notice that the cries sound different and you will know that something is wrong with him.

„First aid“ for sick babies.Different diseases can have similarsymp- toms. So if your babyobviously feels ill, you should takehim to the doctor straightaway sothat he can receive a reliable dia-gnosis and proper treatment. Nevermedicate your baby yourself. If youphone the doctor first and explainthe symptoms, he might be able togive you some tips as to what youshould do to look after your baby athome.

Vitamin D supplements are a good way of preventing rickets.Rickets is a deficiency diseasewhich makes the bones soft and pli-able, and can cause lasting dama-ge.The skeletal systems of childrenwith rickets show typical changes. The disease occurs when a child isnot sufficiently exposed to sunlight. The ultraviolet rays of the sun cantransform a provitamin in the skininto vitamin D, which is needed fornormal bone growth. Babies cannotnormally get enough vitamin D fromtheir diet, and this is why deliberateaction to prevent rickets is so impor-tant. Many doctors believe thatbabies should be given a daily vita-min D supplement in the whole oftheir first year of life and during thewinter in their second year of life.

sebamed Medicinal Baby Care | Holding the baby

Babies are not as fragile asyou think. So do not worryabout picking your baby upand carrying him around. The only really importantthing is to support his headwell in the first few weeks.

How to take your baby out ofhis bed.Pick him up gently, supporting hisback and head.

Lift him up from the lying position.Gently push one hand under his neck to support his head. The other hand supports the back and bottom.

Lifting him to the side.Support the head and back with one hand, hold his chest and shoulders with the other hand while grasping him beneath the shoulders.

First roll him over from his side onto his tummy.Take hold of your baby with both hands beneath the armpits so that you have a firm grip on his upper body. Exert gentle pressure to turn him in the desired direction. Open your other hand to support him from below. Now your baby is lying, quite relaxed, with his tummy on your hand and forearm. Reach between his legs with your other hand to pick him up and carry him.

How to hold your baby securelyLying him down.Again, make sure that you are sup-porting his head properly. If his headfalls backwards, he will feel that he isfalling. So be just as careful whenlying him down as when picking himup: support the head, neck and back.

In a sling.Slings or baby-carrier seats are greatif you need to have your hands free.Your baby can see what is going on,the gentle rocking motion stimulateshis sense of balance and he feelssafe because he is so close to you.But make sure he is not too restrictedand that his head and neck are wellsupported.

This is how your baby likes tobe carried. As close as possible to your body sothat he receives plenty of skin contact. Then he feels happy and secure.

Cradled in your arms.Cradling your baby in the crook ofyour arms is a good position for him. His head is resting on your upper arm, slightly higher than the rest of his body, which you are supporting with your forearm and hand. You hold him at the side with your other arm. This allows his tiny body to lie in a rounded position, similar to that which he adopted during the last few

months of your pregnancy. This position also makes eye contact easier, so your baby can see you smiling and talking to him.

Looking over your shoulder. In this position you carry your baby so that his head is lying on your shoulder. In this position he can see everything that is going on in his environment. You press his bottom towards you with one hand and rest the other hand on his head so that it cannot fall backwards. Once he is able to hold his head up by himself, you can place your hand on his back instead.

A position with beneficial side-effects.Holding your baby horizontally, face down, is good for stomach pains. Reach between his legs with one hand and rest his head on your other arm. All babies like to be rocked in this position.

The importance of pH 5.5 forhealthy skin

• A regular processing of precursorsof the barrier forming intercellularlipids of the Stratum corneum re-quires a pH of 5.5. Neutral orhigher pH values interfere negati-vely with the lipid production andthus with the maintenance of thebarrier.

• Skin cleansing with neutral or alka-line products disturbs the physiolo-gical acid mantle and increasespre-existing dehydration and bar-rier impairment in sensitive skin
