Get your Vitamin D!Tim Grant, Recreation & Parks Director

Winter’s over! It’s time to get back outdoors, enjoy the sunshine, and get some vitamin D! That’s right. Vitamin D, also known as the sunshine vitamin, is produced in the body through exposure to sunshine.

According to Megan Ware, a registered dietician nutri-tionist writing for Medical News Today, just 5 to 10 minutes of sensible exposure, two or three times a week, allows the body to produce enough vitamin D to ensure its beneficial effects. These include maintaining the health of bones and teeth, regulating insulin levels, supporting lung function and cardiovascular health, and supporting the health of the brain and of the immune and nervous systems, along with numerous other health benefits.

But there’s a catch: You lose half of your vitamin D every two weeks, meaning that it has to be constantly replenished. That’s where we come in!

Recreation and Parks offers a multitude of facilities and programs to make sure everyone in Winston-Salem gets all the vitamin D they need.

We have pools and water spraygrounds—where the problem might be getting too MUCH sunshine—in all corners of the city. We have 76 parks scattered throughout the city, offering tennis courts, playgrounds, walking paths, fitness trails, softball diamonds, soccer fields, and volleyball and tennis courts.

We have golf courses and 12 greenways that offer 23 miles of traffic-free walk-ing and biking—with more on the planning board.

To help our citizens get the most out of these facilities, our pools offer free swim lessons and swim teams, our department organizes softball and volleyball leagues, and our recreation centers offer such activities as kickball, softball, soccer, flag football, baseball and more.

The Piedmont Plus Senior Games offers more than 35 athletic and skill events—most of them outdoors—for adults 50 and “better,” and Special Olympics Forsyth County provides year-round sports training and athletic competitions for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

So get outdoors, get active and get your vitamin D!

ATICS

WePLAY aquatics: Pools, lessons and whole lot more! When temperatures heat up and it’s time to cool down, Rec-reation and Parks has what you need! We have pools, water play-grounds, water spray grounds, diving boards and more. The swimming pools are located all over the city that are easy to get to, and we offer a safe, clean family-friendly environment, not to mention afford-able prices.

Facilities It all begins with our swimming pools. There are eight pools located throughout the city. Bolton Pool is our flagship facility with an Olympic size swimming pool, 3 diving boards, 41/2, 71/2, and 10 meter diving platform with an adjacent water playground featuring a zero depth entry, 18 inch pool with spray features for all ages to enjoy. Kimberley Park Pool also features a water playground for all ages to enjoy. Happy Hill Pool and Mineral Springs Pool features the cities first water spray ground. Spray grounds are similar to the water play grounds in that you will get wet. The difference is that you do not go into water. The spray does just that, it will spray you! More spray grounds are on the way. The bonds approved in No-vember of 2014 include money for eight more water spray grounds, one in each ward. Contracts for the first five are scheduled to be awarded this spring. The bonds also include money for an outdoor aquatic center at Winston Lake Park featuring a swimming pool, water slide, lazy river and more. Programs Recreation and Parks has a complete range of aquatic program-ming starting with free swim lessons for all ages regardless of swimming ability. The Aquatics Program offers three sessions of swim lessons each summer, giving new swimmers the opportunity to improve on their swimming skills. Lessons are for children 6 and older during the week.

The Aquatic Program offers swim lessons for children age 6 months to 5 years of age and for adults. Children age 6 months to 5 years of age participate in the Babes in Arms Program. With this program parents get in the water with the child and do the instruction starting with water safety. Lifeguards are present to assist and offer support. Not to be left out, adults that want to learn to swim or need to get over a fear of water, can register and visit their favorite swim-ming pool to get the instruction they need so they can enjoy the water. Our swim team program is a continuation of our swim lesson program where swimmers work on stroke mechanics and endurance while playing games and making new friends at the swimming pool. Swimmers also work as a team at their swimming pool to participate in 2 swim meets where they can swim against other swimmers from the other swimming pools For more information about our swimming pools, including hours of operation, admission fees, registration dates for the programs and more turn to page 4.

Recommended heights for having to wear life jackets!

Safety first! To ensure the safety of our pool patrons, all city pools require that non-swimmers less than 48 inches tall wear life jackets in the pools. Life jackets are not required in the water playgrounds at Bolton Pool and Kimberley Park Pool. The city provides life jackets. However, patrons may bring their own life jackets if they have a stamp indicating that they are Coast Guard approved and pass inspection from the lifeguards. Children less than 48 inches tall will be asked to take a swim test when they arrive at the pool so lifeguards can assess their swimming ability. If they pass the test, they will receive a green

wrist band that allows them to go anywhere in the pool. If they do not pass the test they will receive a red wrist band and a life jacket. They can go in the shallow end of the pool up to 3.5 feet. Patrons over 48 inches tall will be required to take a swim test if lifeguards observe that they may be poor or non-swimmers. Those who do not pass the test will be issued a life jacket and a yellow wrist band that allows them to go anywhere in the pool except the deep end for the diving boards. Patrons who refuse to demonstrate their swimming ability will be asked to leave the facility.
