Numerals are Really Prepositions:An Overlooked Phenomenon*

As Igor Mel’čuk noted in his Poverxnostnyj sintaksis russkix čislovyx vyraženij, #### #### ########### ############## ############ ##### ########### ######### ############## ########## ########### ########## ######### ######### ######### ##########. The goal of the present study is to attempt an explanation for some of this complexity and variation.

1 Numerals as Such

Slavic numerals include #### #### ########### ############## ############ ##### ########### ######### ##############

*

But cf. Ford (2007) for arguments against treating numerals as prepositions.

Collins and Faber (2011) list Polish as belonging to the second group, by my informant finds (i) ungrammatical:(i) a. * dumny z Jana mężczyzna

b. ??wierny studentom professorRussian appears to allow the word order of the second group, though one informant finds comparable examples ungrammatical as well.

LSA User, 07/05/13,

It may be followed by a subtitle on the next line, same size.If you have an asterisk footnote, place it at the end of the title or the end of the subtitle line if there is one. Regular footnotes—The footnote number in the footnote is separated from the text by one 1/8 inch tab.
LSA User, 07/05/13,
An set-off example (block example) typically has three lines: --the example proper, --“trans-lexicalization” (may include grammatical glosses, preferably as a subscript, 10 points), --and translation in single quotation marks. In the second line, use grammatical glosses only if they are relevant to the argument.Use the 1/8 inch tabs to align words on the first and second line. IMPORTANT: The three lines should always stay together—use the “keep together” function with the first and second line to prevent parts of the block appearing on the next page.

NUMERALS ARE REALLY PREPOSITIONS

2.1 General ConsiderationsA total of sixty-seven native speakers have ########## ############## ############ ##### ########### ######### ####### ####### ########## ########### ########## ######## ###### ############ ##### ########### ######### ######## ###### ########## ########### ########## ############## ### ##### #### ##### ########### ######### ### ########### ########## ########### ########## ############## ###### ###### ##### ########### ######### ############## ########## ########### ########## ############## ############ ##### ########### ######### ############## ########## ########### ########## ############## ############ ##### ########### ######### ############## ########## ########### ########## as reported below.2

2.2 Results and Discussion2.2.1 Basic Facts. When it comes to certain types of nouns, ########### ########## ############## ###### ###### ##### ########### ######### ############## ########## ########### ########## ############## ############ ##### ########### ######### ############## ########## ########### ########## ############## ############ structures. One such example is this:

(2) Tento článek je opravdu zajímavý.This article is really interesting‘This article is really interesting.’

Interestingly, ########### ########## ############## ###### ###### ##### ########### ######### ############## ########## ########### ########## ############## ############ ##### ########### ######### ############## ########## ########### ########## ############## ############ structures. The results are presented in Fig.1.

Three-digit section subtitle. Run into the paragraph, no separate line. No italics. Capitalizion applies throughout. This is the maximum subordinate level—four digit section titles are discouraged.
LSA User, 07/05/13,
Footnotes may contain examples as shown below. Their numbers appear in Roman numerals, no empty lines between examples and the text.
LSA User, 07/05/13,
Two-digit section title, in italics, capitalization applies, no period after the numeral, no empty line following.

Fig. 1: Speakers’ acceptance of case/number forms

As can be seen from this graph, for a group of females, the most acceptable form is nominative plural (47/69 speakers, or 68.1%), and the second best form is genitive plural (27/69 speakers, or 39.1%).

2.2.2 Further Facts. When it comes to certain types of nouns, ########### ########## ############## ###### ###### ##### ########### ######### ############## ########## ########### ########## ############## ############ ##### ########### ######### ############## ########## ########### ########## ############## ############ structures.

3 The Proposed Account

From the above discussion one thing is clear: ###### ###### ##### ########### ######### ############## ########## ########### ########## ############## ############ ##### ########### ######### ############## ########## ########### ########## ############## ################## ###### ##### ###########

A table such as above is acceptable, but will not print in color. Make therefore sure that colors are chosen in such a way that segments will remain distinct in the black-and-white version.

Another consequence of the proposal that syntactic [Number] feature is specified on the Q° rather than N° concerns pluralia tantum nouns.

Make sure that subsection titles are not stranded like this one, while the subsection text appears on the next page. Use “keep together” function for the subsection title and the empty line below separated from the text – not like here.

There are no “hard” requirements for the format of references. However, the following points should be kept in mind:--font size 11 points--don’t abbreviate the given name, hence “Bailyn, John” not “Bailyn, J.”--we recommend to italicize and capitalize book titles and titles of dissertations--but do not use capitalization in Slavic titles (use sentence-style capitalization, e.g., Poverxnostnyj sintaksis russkix čislovyx vyraženij—not: Poverxnostnyj Sintaksis Russkix…
