Our Grade 6 class produced the most squares and were given the privilege of handing the blankets to orphaned children from communities close to Hoedspruit. The smiles and grateful faces and the shyness of some of the orphans, brought tears to many of our children’s eyes. Our U11 cricketers played against the team of Laerskool

Eugene Marais, in Polokwane on Thursday 13 October.

Eugene Marais batted first and started relatively well, but

then when the first two wickets went down the batting

collapsed and they were bowled out for just 68 runs in the

14th over. Daniel Dixon took 2 wickets for just 1 run and

Dewald Dumon took 2 wickets for 6 runs in his 2 overs.

Our players then went in to bat and knocked off the runs

in the 10th over. Thomas Mayes top scoring with 28 and

Murray White making 9. Dewald Dumon with 9 not out

and Kieran McDonald with 1 not out were at the crease

when the winning runs were scored. This young team has

not lost in the past 2 seasons and they now go on to play

in the provincial final against Heuwelkruin from Polok-

wane. We wish them every success.

• Petro de Jager for the plants;

• Bill Archbold for arranging the

donation of books for the school;

• Steve Gerondeanos and Michelle

Groves from Ilkley for their help with the Grade 2 & 6 outing and

The Pre-school have been learn-

ing about the life-cycle of the

Silkworm. They have seen baby

worms hatch from eggs, turning

into fat white or zebra silk-

worms. Thanks to Mrs Sally

Wiggill and Luke Burns for pro-

viding a constant supply of Mul-

berry leaves. A month has past

and now the learners are eagerly awaiting the ap-

pearance of the moths from their silk cocoons. In

the photo, Kate Lownie (Gr000) can be seen holding

some of the silk cocoons.

The Pre-school visited the Pro Vet veterinary clinic

where they were shown how a veterinarian cares for

sick animals. Thank you to Surina the veterinary

nurse for showing the children around the clinic and

to Melanie the vet for giving them this wonderful

opportunity.

Coffee Bean, a pony at Alloway Equestrian, came to

visit the Pre-school as part of our Pet Week theme.

Pre-school News

Tritech Success for SCS Learners

Two Grade 7 learners travelled to Tzaneen on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 September to take part in the National Tritech Com-petition. Both girls had qualified for the National competition by excelling at the regional event. On arrival at Merensky High the girls set up their projects and checked into their accommodation at the school’s hostel. While the staff went to a judging briefing and then pre-judging, going through the children’s projects before their interviews, the children went to receive their goodie bags.

The judging started at 10h00 with the children having to present

their projects to three judges and their peers. By 12h00 the judging had been com-pleted. After lunch the children were bussed to Magoebaskloof Canopy Tours for a fun-filled afternoon. After an evening braai a “teacher champion” from Hip2BSquare enter-tained the group with clever Chemistry experiments. On Saturday 24 September prize-giving ceremony took place. Morgan Wheeldon won a bronze medal for her project - “Be My Valentine”, investigating the effects of food colouring on roses in an effort to produce a cheaper red rose for Valentine’s Day. Emma Gibbs won a gold medal for her project dealing with the prevention of African Horse Sickness by modifying stables.

The girls excelled in what is a very challenging competition.

Southern Cross Stand at the SLF

Southern Cross had a stand at this year’s Sustainable Living Festival, which was held at the Hoedspruit Wild-life Estate from Friday 30 September to Sunday 2 Oc-tober. Those who manned the stand said that there was some interest in what we had on display, but un-fortunately the poor public turnout meant that very few people actually visited the stand.

The learners

had the

opportunity

to touch and

feel Coffee

Bean. Thank

you to Ailsa

Burns for

this great

experience.
