Two Types of Signals
Active
– Placed on target line with a transmitter
Passive
– Present on target line
• Three ways to place active signal on line
– Direct connection
– Clamping
– Induction
Mohd Rozaimin Bin Abdul Hamid - CG605
Direct connection
– Connect ground clamp
to stake
– Connect to target line
– Plug cable into
transmitter
Never connect to live
power!!
Turn on transmitter
Mohd Rozaimin Bin Abdul Hamid - CG605
• Clamping
– Place clamp around
target line
– Plug cable into transmitter
– Turn on transmitter
Mohd Rozaimin Bin Abdul Hamid - CG605
• Induction
– Unhook direct connect leads or clamp.
– Place transmitter parallel to target line
– Turn on transmitter
Mohd Rozaimin Bin Abdul Hamid - CG605
Walk in arc around
transmitter (25’-50’)
Pinpoint line
Rotate receiver todetermine direction
Trace and check depthestimates
Mohd Rozaimin Bin Abdul Hamid - CG605
Lost signal
– Walk in circle to detect bend or tee
Unstable signal
– Mark as hand dig area
Suspected power interference
– Sweep area in power mode
Mohd Rozaimin Bin Abdul Hamid - CG605
Gain too high
– Receiver not functioning properly
– Lower gain
Target line has common ground
– Isolate target line
Mohd Rozaimin Bin Abdul Hamid - CG605

• Signal transferring to other lines
– Lower frequency
– Lower power level
– Use direct connect or induction clamp
– Move ground stake
– Apply signal where target line is farthest
from other lines
• Select mode
– CATV
– Power
Mohd Rozaimin Bin Abdul Hamid - CG605
• CATV
– 31kHz
– Locate main lines
– Drops can be located if TV is on
Mohd Rozaimin Bin Abdul Hamid - CG605
• Power
– 50/60Hz
– 60P (Primary Cables)
– Current must be flowing to locate

• Make visual check of area
– Recent trenching
– Line markers
– Lines running down a pole
– Gas meters
– Utility risers
– Drains or manholes
Sweeping the area
– Use peak antenna
Use sweeping pattern
until signal is detected
Trace line
Sweep area again
