This course offers an introductory level of study to the fundamentals of design through hands-on project work. Students will learn the fundamental vocabularies, principles and concepts of design, colour and visual communication. They will design compositions that incorporate each of the six elements of design (Dot, Line, Shape/form, Colour, Texture, and Typeface), and employ each of the principles of design (Rhythm, Contrast, Metaphor, Balance, etc.). They will also experiment with colouring techniques, colour theory, and colour associations. Students will also learn about the use of mass, volume, void, shadow, and light to design three-dimensional forms. They will also learn about the art of origami. The course also introduces students to a variety of materials that can be used in design including plastic, metal, wood, card-board, latex, foam-board, etc.

This course introduces students to photography and deals with the terminology of both digital and traditional photography, but with particular emphasis on digital photography basics. The course covers traditional black and white darkroom techniques as well as digital imaging techniques. Students learn how to operate a camera, produce and compose an image, adjust lighting and depth of field, use filters and exposure meters, and digitally manipulate photos. Students also learn about the various camera formats and digital photography devices before they learn a variety of digital manipulation techniques to prepare photos for print and online publication. Students are expected to develop a portfolio of photos based on specific themes, and to present their photos accompanied by music of their own choice.

The students will learn the basic elements of drawing, dot , line, shape, form, colour and texture through various drawing techniques such as free-hand drawing, direct observation drawing, drawing from pictures. The subjects of drawing range from natural objects (shells, stones, leaves, fruits, vegetables, flowers….etc) to static objects (shoes, pots, candles, glasses, watches, handbags, mobiles, books). The course sheds light on the various types of ceramics and the different degrees of purity, together with an explanation of the temperatures required to attain these degrees. The importance of the process of burning in the art of ceramics is explained along with the stages of burning and also the process of glazing afterwards. The evolution of ancient uses of ceramics into modern uses is also discussed including applications for flooring, tools, decorative pottery and domestic purposes. The course also highlights the most important ceramic artists and their works and the role of murals in the art of ceramics. Students are trained to provide some practical projects demonstrating the aspects that they learned during this course.

Students learn how to incorporate the graphic design principles of metaphor, rhythm, balance, contrast, repetition, unity, etc when developing illustrations. This course is a hands-on introduction to software and hardware used to generate graphic artwork. It also introduces students to various user interfaces and operating systems, navigation, file organization, use of a file transfer protocol tool, and scanner in addition to graphic-design-related technology concepts and terminology. It examines the characteristics that differentiate visuals from other communication media. It introduces students to semiology and semiotic theories, and explores ways that visual elements of design convey meaning as separate units and in combination with other units. This course introduces the students to a study of human features in the face of both sex and different ages and races through sketching exercises in pencil or charcoal or black ink in order to learn the basic lines of human features with the focus on different expressions. In this course, the concept of anatomy is generally clarified but with specific focus on artistic anatomy and its importance in knowing the proportions of the human body parts in relation to each other and in relation to various surrounding elements. The course reveals the most important features that distinguish the body of a child, an elderly, a man, or a woman. It also involves an anatomical study of muscles, their function, their differences between men and women, and their role in affecting the exterior form of the human body both in males and females. The role of the skeleton in shaping the body, and the role of the bones and joints in determining the way body parts move are also addressed. Students are given sketching exercises whenever possible in order to learn a combination of theoretical information and practical applications.

The course addresses visual arts in terms of vision and analysis and outlines the beginnings of visual art and its development through the Renaissance era up to the current century. The course involves a detailed explanation of the various schools of art, the most important features of each school, the most important stages that each school underwent, the painting techniques adopted by each school, and the key artists and artworks in each school. The views and opinions of experts and critics of those schools are discussed and also how these views have changed upon the emergence of new schools. The different views of supporters and opponents of these schools are also discussed in order to demonstrate the differences in their analysis of artworks and art schools. The aim of this course is to augment students' presentation and public speaking skills and build their critical thinking skills. The course seeks to place the students in a wider cultural, social, and economical context, highlighting the key debates and contemporary issues surrounding the theory and practice of graphic design. Students will submit a proposal and present a paper just as they would at a real conference. Public speaking skills will be augmented with the latest graphic presentation skills and software. In addition to lectures, presentations, and discussions by students, the course will involve guest speakers. Discussions will include copyright and social responsibility issues as well as the broader implications of graphic design, its role and its future. All presentations will be announced and open to the public.

This course presents the real-world implications and difficulties of working in the graphic design field or running a graphic design business. Topics include getting started, considering partners, finding, managing, and persuading clients, writing proposals, making presentations, estimates, pricing, invoices, client relations account management, crisis management, print and production management, cash management, legal issues, and freelancing. Students learn to identify the sources of information about the various careers related to graphic design and the training, attitudes, and skills required to succeed in these careers. The course includes trips to graphic design firms. The students are expected to research a graphic design firm and conduct interviews with professionals in the area.

In this course the students are expected to sum up all the theoretical and practical experiences which they learned during the programme in putting up an individual exhibition of their own work. The course provides the students with an opportunity of being introduced to the procedure to be followed in arranging and organizing a show. The students will be in direct contact with the official representatives of agencies and galleries where they will be introduced to the market and be prepared to handling any obstacles in arranging for an individual show. The students will be exposed to all the details concerning the arrangement for a show from the first step of having a theme and deciding the media for the work, then approaching galleries or official centers or art societies for providing the place and following up the advertisement, the invitation cards and any fliers or pamphlets or booklets or any other media accompanying the show as a main procedure for reaching a wider audience.

The students work in this course on developing a portfolio of their individual experience in the programme through a written research of all they learned focusing on the field they specialized in from the fine arts along with practical experiments of the creative work they developed throughout the programme.
