WELCOME

Welcome to BA (Hons) Fine Art. You will soon be joining a dynamic and exciting degree course with an excellent reputation for student achievement and professionalism. When you arrive there will be a number of essentials which have to be covered during the first week, such as enrolment and various introductions etc. But we intend to make that first week an interesting and enjoyable introduction to the course and Arts University Bournemouth.

During Induction Week the staff team will show you around the campus and introduce you to the course, showing slides of their work and talking about their own practice.

We hope you have a very enjoyable summer. Please try to visit any exhibitions you can, especially contemporary or modern art. Make notes and reflect upon what you have seen.

SUMMER PROJECT

It is important for you to understand your work within the context of contemporary fine art. Spend some time using the internet to browse through these current, recent and forthcoming big exhibitions.

— The Turner Prize — Venice Biennale — Documenta 14 — Istanbul Biennial — Manifesta 12 — New Museum Triennial, New York

From this research make a list of at least three artists from these exhibitions, two who look interesting to you and one that does not. Bring an image of a work by each artist when you arrive. The quality or size of this image does not matter. Find our as much information on these artists and artworks as you can.

Also use the internet to research some local art spaces, which you can visit in the future:

— Bournemouth Emerging Arts Fringe — Lighthouse, Poole — The John Hansard Gallery — Southampton City Art Gallery — Solent Showcase, Southampton — Ha Ha Gallery, Southampton — Aspace, Southampton — Hauser and Wirth, Bruton — The Aspex Gallery, Portsmouth

READING LIST

BooksThe Library here at AUB is extremely well resourced and includes all key texts that you will need. Reading lists will be supplied in your course handbook and at the start of each unit on the course.

Here is some further reading/viewing which would give you a good background to the course:

— Chapter 13 ‘What is Contemporary Art?’ in Terry Smith (2012) What is Contemporary Art. Univ . of Chicago Press.

Please have a look at Grayson Perry’s book Playing to the Gallery (2014). Choose some of the book that seems interesting and note down any questions that you think it raises. We will use these as the basis for some introductory discussions.

Magazines / JournalsOver the summer, please try to read:

— A-N, — Frieze, — Modern Painters, — Art Monthly and — Art Forum.

Websites — Tate Shots, short videos on Turner Prize Nominees (Search on You — Tube) — Bishop, C. (2005). ‘But is it Installation Art?’, TATE, tate.org.uk/context-comment/articles/it-installation-art — artquest.org.uk (General info on resources and life as an artist) — thisistomorrow.info (An artist-run magazine) — Hans Haacke, Monument to Beach Pollution (1970), theartstack.com/artist/hans-haacke/monument-to-beach-pollution (Just because you are going to be living near a beach!)

COURSE TRIPS

There are a number of educational visits provided each year. They are optional, but are very valuable in terms of primary research. They widen your perspective of the global fine art community of practice and can have a very beneficial influence on the development of your own work and thinking.

In recent years our overseas trips have been to Athens, Amsterdam, Krakow, Paris, Berlin, Madrid, Venice, Barcelona and New York. It is not compulsory to attend. There will also be some compulsory one-day study visits to London.

The 2019 visit will be to the Venice biennale in November, with an approximate cost of £450 for 4 nights. Please follow this link to pay for your place store.aub.ac.uk/product-catalogue/trips/faculty-of-art-design-and-architecture/ba-fine-art/ba-fine-art-venice-trip-2019

There will be other years of the course going and it’s on a first come first served basis, there will be other opportunities in the second and third year to do a group visit and we encourage students to undertake primary source visits independently after liaising with their tutors.

The cost of overseas trips are around £250 to £400. One-day study visits to London are paid for by the course, you will have to pay entrance fees to some exhibitions and travel around London, we recommend you bring packed lunches to save money.

PREPARING FOR YOUR COURSE

Computer EquipmentPlease note that a computer of your own is NOT a course requirement. However, if you are purchasing any computer equipment for your course, remember that many computer retailers offer student discounts, so if you are considering buying a computer you may wish to wait until you have enrolled on your course. You may also wish to discuss appropriate hardware and software specifications with the course team before purchasing. AUB has a range of Mac and PCs available for students to use. All computers in the Fine Art computer suite are Macs.

Recommended SoftwareOur students commonly use Microsoft Office applications as well as Photoshop, lnDesign, Adobe Premiere, etc., depending on their area of practice.

Software Provided by AUBOnce you enrol on the course you will be able to download Microsoft Office 365 to your personal computer, so don’t pay extra when buying a computer to purchase MS Office. You get it free as an AUB student! You will also have 1TB of cloud storage, which we recommend you use to back-up all work. AUB also provides access to Autodesk software. Before purchasing additional software we advise you check with the course team, and remember many retailers offer student discount.

WHAT TO BRING ON THE FIRST DAY

Notepad, pens/pencils, a smile and the three images from your summer project.
