MATTIE STEPANEKMattie was a young boy who became a famous poet at the age of 10.

He was good friends with Oprah Winfrey and Jimmy Carter.

Mattie’s first book was titled Heartsongs.

Mattie died in 2004 at the age of 13.

This is the most emotional chapter in the book. While he is an inspirational person, the chapter makes many people cry.

MATTIE STEPANEK

“The disease is a curse at first sight, but I wouldn’t be me without it. I haven’t given up.

I don’t sit in the corner and cry about my life. I thank God for life.

I make the fullest of it.”

You have

two choices

Page 37: b83aattitude

Jerry is the manager of a restaurant. He is always in a

good mood.

Page 38: b83aattitude

When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would always reply,

Page 39: b83aattitude

"If I were any better, I would be twins!"

Page 40: b83aattitude

Many of the waiters at his restaurant quit their jobs when

he changed jobs,

Page 41: b83aattitude

so they could follow him around from restaurant to

restaurant

Page 42: b83aattitude

Why ?

Page 43: b83aattitude

Because

Jerry was a natural motivator.

Page 44: b83aattitude

If an employee was having a bad day,

Jerry was always there, telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.

Page 45: b83aattitude

Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to

Jerry and asked him :

Page 46: b83aattitude

"I don't get it! No one can be a positive person all of the time.

How do you do it?"

Page 47: b83aattitude

Jerry replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, I have two choices today. I can choose to be in a good mood or I can choose to be in a bad mood.

Page 48: b83aattitude

I always choose to be in a good mood.

Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be victim or I can choose to learn from it. I always choose to learn from it.

Page 49: b83aattitude

Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or

I can point out the positive side of life.

I always choose the positive side of life."

Page 50: b83aattitude

"But it's not always that easy,“ I protested.

Page 51: b83aattitude

"Yes it is," Jerry said.

Page 52: b83aattitude

"Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk every situation is a choice.

Page 53: b83aattitude

You choose how you react to situations.

You choose how people will affect your mood.

You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood.

It's your choice how you live your life."

Page 54: b83aattitude

Several years later,

Page 55: b83aattitude

I heard that Jerry accidentally did something you are never supposed to do in the restaurant business.

Page 56: b83aattitude

He left the back door of his restaurant open

Page 57: b83aattitude

And then ???

Page 58: b83aattitude

In the morning,

he was robbed by three armed men.

Page 59: b83aattitude

Page 61: b83aattitude

While Jerry trying to open the safe box,

Page 62: b83aattitude

his hand, shaking from nervousness, slipped off the combination.

The robbers panicked and shot him.

Page 63: b83aattitude

Luckily, Jerry was found quickly and rushed to the hospital.

Page 64: b83aattitude

After 18 hours of surgery

Page 65: b83aattitude

and

weeks of intensive care,

Page 66: b83aattitude

Jerry was released from the hospital with fragments of the bullets still in his body.…

Page 67: b83aattitude

I saw Jerry about six months after the accident.

Page 68: b83aattitude

When I asked him how he was,

Page 69: b83aattitude

he replied, "If I were any better, I'd be twins. Want to see my scars?"

Page 70: b83aattitude

I declined to see his wounds, but did ask him what had gone through his mind as the robbery took place.

Page 71: b83aattitude

"The first thing that went through my mind was that I should have locked the back

door," Jerry replied.

Page 72: b83aattitude

"Then, after they shot me, as I lay on the floor, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live or could choose

to die. I chose to live."

Page 73: b83aattitude

"Weren't you scared“

I asked?

Page 74: b83aattitude

Jerry continued, "The paramedics were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine.

Page 75: b83aattitude

But when they wheeled me into the Emergency Room and I saw the expression on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared.

Page 76: b83aattitude

In their eyes, I read 'He's a dead man.'

Page 77: b83aattitude

I knew I needed to take action."

Page 78: b83aattitude

"What did you do?" I asked.

Page 79: b83aattitude

"Well, there was a big nurse shouting questions at me," said Jerry. "She asked if I was allergic to anything."

Page 80: b83aattitude

'Yes,' I replied.

Page 81: b83aattitude

The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply.

Page 82: b83aattitude

I took a deep breath

Page 83: b83aattitude

and yelled, 'Bullets!'

Page 84: b83aattitude

Over their laughter, I told them,

Page 85: b83aattitude

'I am choosing to live. Please operate on me as if I am alive, not dead'.

Page 86: b83aattitude

"Jerry lived thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude.

Page 87: b83aattitude

I learned from him that

Page 88: b83aattitude

every day you have the choice to either enjoy your life or to hate it.

Page 89: b83aattitude

The only thing that is truly yours -- that no one can control or take from you-

Page 90: b83aattitude

is your attitude,

Page 91: b83aattitude

so if you can take care of that, everything else in life becomes much easier.
