said. “They got theirwake-up call. Nobodywants to lose. I don’t buythat (good loss). Bottomline is John will get theirattention and Cal is amaster at taking a littlesituation and utilizing itin a positive way.“But the loss to Vander-
bilt was no fluke. Vandyhad played them reallytough every game. Vandyfinally lived up to what itwas projected to be. I hadVandy sixth in my na-tional preseason poll. Iwas not shocked with thatloss.”However, Vitale also
still believes Kentucky isthe nation’s best teamand that freshman An-thony Davis is the na-tion’s best player.“Anthony Davis is my
player of the year. I willtake back what I said onTV that he might go four-for-four (player of year, freshman of year, defen-sive player of year, No. 1overall draft pick),” Vitalesaid. “I am going to addhe could be player of theyear in the tournament’sFinal Four. This kid isspecial. His wingspan andwhat he does emotionallyand psychologically toother teams. You have gotto get him in foul troubleand not many teams havedone that.”However, one writer on
Tuesday’s national con-ference call with Vitaledid irritate him — some-thing that is not easy todo — by asking him aboutthe way Calipari andSyracuse coach Jim Boe-heim have “choked” in re-cent tournaments. Thewriter noted that Syra-cuse has just been pastthe Sweet Sixteen once inthe last 15 years and thatCalipari’s last three teams
have lost to Missouri,West Virginia and Con-necticut when his teamswere favored in all threegames.“You used the word
choked. How many guyswould like to choke andhave the numbers thosepeople have,” Vitale said.“It is easy to bang out ablog and bury people andsearch for the negative. Ilook for the positive. When I sit here and haveto defend Boeheim’s andCalipari’s numbers, comeon. What you are saying isthat unless you win thenational title, you are afailure. That’s absurd. These guys are incredibleachievers.“Calipari has had five
30-win seasons in a row.Undefeated in conferenceplay. But the perceptionis that unless you win thenational title you are afailure and that’s sad. Ifthis was the NBA rightnow, Kentucky automati-cally wins the nationaltitle. Nobody beats themfour out of seven (games). But the beauty of this isone bad night and theparty is over. Calipari hasbeen to the Final Fourseveral times. Last yearthey lose because they go4-for-12 at the foul line(against UConn). If theywin that game, they prob-ably win the nationaltitle.”
Yet Vitale knows theperception of Calipari isout there because he got areminder at breakfastTuesday.“There is a premise
that exists in our busi-ness. Everybody is onlyabout the last guy whostands (wins),” Vitalesaid. “A guy told me todayat breakfast that if Cali-pari is a failure if theydon’t win the nationaltitle. That is a joke. Theybuild statues normally forcoaches who that havethose kind of numbers.”Vitale did acknowledge
that Kentucky’s youthcould be a problem as itwas in a 2010 NCAA lossto West Virginia or lastyear when the Catsmissed free throwsagainst UConn. However,he doesn’t think that is asbig a problem as someperceive.“Kids play so much
basketball. You are talk-ing John Wall and thatgang (in 2010). They hada bad shooting night. That happens,” Vitalesaid. “Will youth play avital role in creating prob-lems? I don’t see that as amajor problem. I see ifthey get beat it will be be-cause the other club wasbetter on that night likeWest Virginia was justbetter than Kentucky onthat night. But Kentuckyis special this year.”
tional semifinal loss to Con-necticut, a possible oppo-nent for UK on Saturday. Heinsists last year’s tourneyexperience will help himthis season.“It will help me a lot re-
ally. I know how to winclose games in tournamentand how to compete withthe best for 40 minutes,”Lamb, an 84.7 percentshooter at the foul line thisseason, said. “You just haveto go out there and play 40minutes. Teams will playhard against us. We have togo out there and play greatto win, and we can do that.“It was a good lesson for
all of us, just not the fresh-men, when Vanderbilt beatus. We have to jump onteams and know they aregoing to play hard withnothing to lose.”LSU guard Andre
Stringer played AAU againstLamb and has seen hisgame progress at Kentucky. “I think he definitely has
a great (shooting) stroke. He can really shoot the ball.
He knows the angles and isone of the smartest playersaround,” Stringer said. “Heknows the game very well.Obviously his ability toshoot the ball stretches thedefense. That gives theirwhole team a lift.“I have definitely seen
him change from AAU tonow. I think he has reallyworked a lot on his anglesand is shooting the ball ex-tremely well now eventhough he always shot well.I think he now plays de-fense well, too.”Lamb says that defensive
improvement by him andhis teammates is one rea-son he believes UK can winthe national championshipit barely missed last year.“Defense is there for us
every game. We know howto play without fouling if wejust play smart,” he said.“Young guys have learnedyou have to come out wayharder and compete evenmore. Teams are going toknow plays in the tourna-ment. You have to come tothe ball and be ready. I havetold them what it will be
like and how hard teamswill play in the tourna-ment.”“We just want to keep
playing the way we havebeen all season. We havegot better as a team and in-dividually. Winning games, that’s our only focus andhas been all year. I want towin every game. I don’teven think it about beingthe tournament. We justwant to win games.”Lamb isn’t sure what
he’ll do about the NBA oncethe season ends. Last yearhe contemplated puttinghis name into the draft butchanged his mind. Ken-tucky coach John Caliparihas indicated he expectsLamb to be a first-rounddraft pick and leave UK.“Coach tells us just to
play hard and finish theseason hard,” Lamb said.“We want to play great, butthat is how we have felt allyear. We are not worriedabout things after the sea-son. We just take it onegame at a time and play andthat’s what we really have tokeep doing now.”
handily. Most of our suc-cess came when the gamewas up and down the floorin transition. We tried tocreate as many opportuni-ties as we could to run. Weprobably ran more thanmost teams do (againstKentucky).”LSU gave Kentucky a
tussle after being easilyhandled by the Wildcatsduring the regular season.“They get everybody’s
best shot. A lot of timesteams play over their headagainst Kentucky. I don’tthink people realize howgood of basketball wasplayed in this league thisyear and how good Ken-tucky is,” Johnson said.LSU guard Andre
Stringer still believes Ken-tucky is special, too.“I think they are a great
team and have a lot of greatyoung guys like they doevery year. More impor-tantly this year the guys are
more hungry than I haveever seen Kentucky. Obvi-ously, last year’s team hada great run. I think thisyear’s team is special, though,” Stringer said. “I really can’t put my fin-
ger on a weakness. I look atthem as the No. 1 team anda great team. They have alot of length and play totheir strengths. They have alot of guys that can put theball down on the floor andshoot it. They just havegreat players. They have alot of kids that will be prosone day and they shoulddo really well in the NCAAwhere teams have not seenthem and don’t know a lotabout them.”Florida guard Earvin
Walker is a believer as well.“I love the way they play
together and get along to-gether. I think coach Calhas to get a lot of thatcredit. He has those guysplaying cohesive and it isalways good when you seea team play like a team.
There is no way not to ap-preciate that,” Walker said. LSU freshman Johnny
O’Bryant was pursued byKentucky and says Calipari“does a great job bringingtalented guys into the pro-gram and they play hardfor him” and that’s why UKseldom loses. He says Calipari “has a
swagger” even in recruitingand makes players believethey will win.“He’s just a laid-back
coach, a very calm coach. He was a cool guy to talk toand you could tell youcould come talk to himabout anything,” O’Bryantsaid. “He really empha-sized winning and playingagainst great players everyday. That’s why everybodylikes playing them. Anyplayer wants a shot at theNo. 1 team in the country, especially a team full of fu-ture pros. But just becauseyou want a shot at themdoesn’t mean ou are goingto beat them.”
VIEWS, from B1 “ere is a premise that exists in our business. Everybody is only about the last
guy who stands (wins). A guy told metoday at breakfast that if Calipari is a
failure if they don’t win the national title.at is a joke. ey build statues normally
for coaches who that have those kind ofnumbers.”
