Bottom line is John will get their attention and Cal is a master at taking a little situation and utilizing it in a positive way. “But the loss to Vander- bilt was no fluke. Vandy had played them really tough every game. Vandy finally lived up to what it was projected to be. I had Vandy sixth in my na- tional preseason poll. I was not shocked with that loss.” However, Vitale also still believes Kentucky is the nation’s best team and that freshman An- thony Davis is the na- tion’s best player. “Anthony Davis is my player of the year. I will take back what I said on TV that he might go four- for-four (player of year, freshman of year, defen- sive player of year, No. 1 overall draft pick),” Vitale said. “I am going to add he could be player of the year in the tournament’s Final Four. This kid is special. His wingspan and what he does emotionally and psychologically to other teams. You have got to get him in foul trouble and not many teams have done that.” However, one writer on Tuesday’s national con- ference call with Vitale did irritate him — some- thing that is not easy to do — by asking him about the way Calipari and Syracuse coach Jim Boe- heim have “choked” in re- cent tournaments. The writer noted that Syra- cuse has just been past the Sweet Sixteen once in the last 15 years and that Calipari’s last three teams have lost to Missouri, West Virginia and Con- necticut when his teams were favored in all three games. “You used the word choked. How many guys would like to choke and have the numbers those people have,” Vitale said. “It is easy to bang out a blog and bury people and search for the negative. I look for the positive. When I sit here and have to defend Boeheim’s and Calipari’s numbers, come on. What you are saying is that unless you win the national title, you are a failure. That’s absurd. These guys are incredible achievers. “Calipari has had five 30-win seasons in a row. Undefeated in conference play. But the perception is that unless you win the national title you are a failure and that’s sad. If this was the NBA right now, Kentucky automati- cally wins the national title. Nobody beats them four out of seven (games). But the beauty of this is one bad night and the party is over. Calipari has been to the Final Four several times. Last year they lose because they go 4-for-12 at the foul line (against UConn). If they win that game, they prob- ably win the national title.” Yet Vitale knows the perception of Calipari is out there because he got a reminder at breakfast Tuesday. “There is a premise that exists in our busi- ness. Everybody is only about the last guy who stands (wins),” Vitale said. “A guy told me today at breakfast that if Cali- pari is a failure if they don’t win the national title. That is a joke. They build statues normally for coaches who that have those kind of numbers.” Vitale did acknowledge that Kentucky’s youth could be a problem as it was in a 2010 NCAA loss to West Virginia or last year when the Cats missed free throws against UConn. However, he doesn’t think that is as big a problem as some perceive. “Kids play so much basketball. You are talk- ing John Wall and that gang (in 2010). They had a bad shooting night. That happens,” Vitale said. “Will youth play a vital role in creating prob- lems? I don’t see that as a major problem. I see if they get beat it will be be- cause the other club was better on that night like West Virginia was just better than Kentucky on that night. But Kentucky is special this year.” tional semifinal loss to Con- necticut, a possible oppo- nent for UK on Saturday. He insists last year’s tourney experience will help him this season. “It will help me a lot re- ally. I know how to win close games in tournament and how to compete with the best for 40 minutes,” Lamb, an 84.7 percent shooter at the foul line this season, said. “You just have to go out there and play 40 minutes. Teams will play hard against us. We have to go out there and play great to win, and we can do that. “It was a good lesson for all of us, just not the fresh- men, when Vanderbilt beat us. We have to jump on teams and know they are going to play hard with nothing to lose.” LSU guard Andre Stringer played AAU against Lamb and has seen his game progress at Kentucky. “I think he definitely has a great (shooting) stroke. He can really shoot the ball. He knows the angles and is one of the smartest players around,” Stringer said. “He knows the game very well. Obviously his ability to shoot the ball stretches the defense. That gives their whole team a lift. “I have definitely seen him change from AAU to now. I think he has really worked a lot on his angles and is shooting the ball ex- tremely well now even though he always shot well. I think he now plays de- fense well, too.” Lamb says that defensive improvement by him and his teammates is one rea- son he believes UK can win the national championship it barely missed last year. “Defense is there for us every game. We know how to play without fouling if we just play smart,” he said. “Young guys have learned you have to come out way harder and compete even more. Teams are going to know plays in the tourna- ment. You have to come to the ball and be ready. I have told them what it will be like and how hard teams will play in the tourna- ment.” “We just want to keep playing the way we have been all season. We have got better as a team and in- dividually. Winning games, that’s our only focus and has been all year. I want to win every game. I don’t even think it about being the tournament. We just want to win games.” Lamb isn’t sure what he’ll do about the NBA once the season ends. Last year he contemplated putting his name into the draft but changed his mind. Ken- tucky coach John Calipari has indicated he expects Lamb to be a first-round draft pick and leave UK. “Coach tells us just to play hard and finish the season hard,” Lamb said. “We want to play great, but that is how we have felt all year. We are not worried about things after the sea- son. We just take it one game at a time and play and that’s what we really have to keep doing now.” handily. Most of our suc- cess came when the game was up and down the floor in transition. We tried to create as many opportuni- ties as we could to run. We probably ran more than most teams do (against Kentucky).” LSU gave Kentucky a tussle after being easily handled by the Wildcats during the regular season. “They get everybody’s best shot. A lot of times teams play over their head against Kentucky. I don’t think people realize how good of basketball was played in this league this year and how good Ken- tucky is,” Johnson said. LSU guard Andre Stringer still believes Ken- tucky is special, too. “I think they are a great team and have a lot of great young guys like they do every year. More impor- tantly this year the guys are more hungry than I have ever seen Kentucky. Obvi- ously, last year’s team had a great run. I think this year’s team is special, though,” Stringer said. “I really can’t put my fin- ger on a weakness. I look at them as the No. 1 team and a great team. They have a lot of length and play to their strengths. They have a lot of guys that can put the ball down on the floor and shoot it. They just have great players. They have a lot of kids that will be pros one day and they should do really well in the NCAA where teams have not seen them and don’t know a lot about them.” Florida guard Earvin Walker is a believer as well. “I love the way they play together and get along to- gether. I think coach Cal has to get a lot of that credit. He has those guys playing cohesive and it is always good when you see a team play like a team. There is no way not to ap- preciate that,” Walker said. LSU freshman Johnny O’Bryant was pursued by Kentucky and says Calipari “does a great job bringing talented guys into the pro- gram and they play hard for him” and that’s why UK seldom loses. He says Calipari “has a swagger” even in recruiting and makes players believe they will win. “He’s just a laid-back coach, a very calm coach. He was a cool guy to talk to and you could tell you could come talk to him about anything,” O’Bryant said. “He really empha- sized winning and playing against great players every day. That’s why everybody likes playing them. Any player wants a shot at the No. 1 team in the country, especially a team full of fu- ture pros. But just because you want a shot at them doesn’t mean ou are going to beat them.” VIEWS, from B1 “ere is a premise that exists in our business. Everybody is only about the last guy who stands (wins).
