Program Notes
The Latin word “paginula” means “little page” or “short letter” (diminutive of “pa-gina”). As a title, it connotes something similar to “album leaf ” or moment musical.
I completed this work as a contribution to Boston-based Music for Food, a remark-able organization in which Kim Kashkashian—viola professor at the New England Conservatory—and her many generous colleagues volunteer extraordinary, memo-rable performances in concerts whose proceeds go entirely to combat food insecu-rity, homelessness and domestic violence. As to the music itself, this is one of those pieces of mine for which a program note isn’t (or in my mind, shouldn’t be) necessary. More and more, I find myself aspiring to a music that conveys what it’s going to convey without benefit of an accompany-ing verbal narrative.
