The Bears started this tight game with solid defense from the likes of Andrew P at third, and Gareth E at short. Good lower or-der at-bats helped the Bears get ahead by 3 runs. But those defen-sive mental lapses returned like a Jeckyll and Hyde and soon a 3-run lead was squandered, and the Bears went into the bottom of the last trailing by 3 runs. With two outs, and two-on, Doug smoked a 2-run triple to the fence in right centre, leaving 'Big-Game' Billy McColl the task of scoring the base hit required to even the game. Billy lined two hard, but foul up the right field line, and then, just did get enough of one to pop it into centre to score Doug. Billy stole 2nd base on a pass-ball, and James M came to the plate. With a calm and steady at-bat, James waited for his pitch and stroked one to deep right to drive in the winning run and ut-terly rob the lead competition leaders in the most demoralising way. Jimmy took our breath away, and his own beath away after ruuning flat out to 3rd base. Risk Spesh pitched the whole game, but these Bears need to know how many outs there are, learn NOT to throw the ball away, and stay aware in the field if their bats are going to have any chance of out scoring other teams. Great to see Flat Rock dry up so fast after the rainduring the week!

That's baseball-it's never over till it's over. After taking an early 2-0 lead extended to 4-0, we eventually went down 8-4 to a determined comp leading Five Dock - in the last dig and last 10 minutes. We started strongly with 2 successive

shut out innings by Mitch on the m o u n d , plenty of hits, with singles from Hamish, Mitch, JT (x2), Nick (x2), Dom, P a u l y (x2) but just couldn't hold the Falcons out at the death. Glass half full - we can beat these guys, and with an eye on a distant final series, we'll see them there. From the Scorer's box

BEARS DINE ON STEAK WHILST ROCKIES TASTE DEFEAT (AGAIN!) Whilst daylight savings might have seen the cancellation of the Bears World Series Break-fast, it did see the birth of a far better event - the Bears World Series Lunch! Appreciating the later start, around 30 Junior and Senior Bears took over the Bridgeview Hotel to watch the Red Soxs take one step closer to being crowned 2007 World Champi-ons. The food, beverages and company were all outstanding. Up coming events (check flyers for full details) The next social event is the annual Toga Night at ELS Hall on Sat 17 Nov. Come along in your best sheets and watch the G Grade Bears take on Greenway (growl!). First pitch is thrown chucked at 6pm and there will be free BBQ and drinks for all Bears. Let James Robertson know you are coming via email ([email protected]) by 9 Nov. The following Friday (23 Nov) is the Trivia night. Tables are going fast so get your names (preferably in tables of 10) to James Robertson via email ([email protected]) by 16 Nov to reserve your seat. We are still looking for sponsors and helpers for the Trivia Night (at the moment the grand prize is purely bragging rights!) so if you can help out in any way let James know so the night be successful.

BEAR PAUSE JOKE OF THE WEEK

D2 CLING TO TOP FOUR SPOT

Expecting a tough match against 2nd place Green-way the 4th place Bears fronted to Greenway on a warm day ready to meet the challenge and have a beer afterwards no matter the result. Early Bears hitting and aggressive base running saw two runners cross the plate to get the game under-way in style and settle the nerves. Looking to emu-late or better the Bears effort, Greenway struggled to trouble the scorers against an inform Robertson on the mound and freshly promoted to Holland at Short Stop. Buoyed by a positive first dig the bottom of the Bears line-up hit well in the second and got plenty of runners on bases, however they were unable to fully capitalise and only scored a solitary run. Greenway again struggled to make any real damage to the Bears defence but were able to get a runner across before heading out to field again. The third innings saw the Bears hit well against a tiring Greenway pitcher with plenty of outfield hits allowing four runners to earn chalk up all important RBI’s for the batters. Looking to quickly finish his work on the mound for the day Robertson dispensed heat and movement to knock over Greenway 1-2-3 with a hat trick of K2s.

No runners crossed for either side as defence won out over attack in the fourth and fifth. A change in Greenway pitching saw the end Bears scoring and whilst some batters were able to dig out singles too many were either caught looking or swinging after the ball was already in the catchers glove. Smart took over pitching duties and delivered a crafty dis-play that took advantage of a Greenway batting line-up that seemed to be waiting for a walk and had ob-viously never seen a curve ball before. Heading into the sixth the Bears were feeling com-fortable with a 7-1 a score line and Forbes closing, but Greenway had other ideas. The game quickly changed as two batters were hit, the Greenway pol-icy of waiting for the walk finally paid off and a couple of in field errors occurred. With Greenway approaching the Bears score line the spectators were on the edges of their seats as they prepared to run onto the field and lynch the coach for not making a pitching change. Interviewed af- ter the game coach Robertson said “ I new it was close, I might have been out by a couple of runs though”. A great effort by the Bears for five innings and de-spite a hiccup in the sixth a win was recorded and the promised beers were consumed.

Last Saturday the Mighty G2 Bears mustered in the far off land of Gal-

ston Gorge to face off against Thornleigh. The last time that we had clashed with this team it had been a very close but high scoring game and the Bears were looking to make their mark on this team and cement their place on the top half of the table.

We went into the first innings with a confident ap-proach but were soon sent packing by a young pitcher with a cunning sliding ball that left the Bears 3-Up 3-Down. Our poor start continued with many errors allowing Thornleigh to max out with 7 runs. Thomas Lord replaced SuperCoachTM Mark Holman on the mound. However the next innings went very similarly with Thornleigh again maxing out and the Bears remaining scoreless. The score-board after the first two innings looked very daunt-ing at 14-0 but we knew that if we got a few things together then we would be able to rescue this

game.

In the third innings we finally got some points on the board with a double from our hard hitting Ca-nadian Claude Davidson “knocking in” a runner and some good batting from the top of the order. We were back in the game with Thomas hitting in our 7th run to ensure we were back in the game. Our focus for the rest of the game was to restrict Thornleigh’s run rate and allow us a fighting chance in our last dig.

Some excellent fielding from Dan in shortstop and brilliant running, full stretch catch from Nick Per-cival allowed us to get close, but in spite of a great solo home run from rookie Rob Loosli, we fell short, 19-11.

Maybe next week we will bat a little better.

LAST WEEKS FISH & CHIPS Coach Mark ‘Homerun’ Holman lives up to his name

A bit of a slow turn up this week with several of the team finding it difficult to find the Meadowbank ground that the majority of us had never played at. Looking at the ground the right field looked tempting enough for a bit of switch hitting in the event of a whitewash. Form coming into the game showed us a 3rd v 4th 2nd Round replay that the good guys had won in the opening round after a come from behind win. Credit to the Saints, their pitcher is very good and improved since our last meeting and was not going to walk people with the generous strike zone on offer. 1st innings we were stranded with a Brett on 3rd and no runs scored which is an absolute rarity in G Grade Baseball. Good pitching and fielding was going to be required to keep the opposition at bay. Up to the mound step Homerun Holman after reasonable success the previous week. Quick History Les-son: Homerun Holman got his name not from his ability to hit em but his ability to have them hit off him as a pitcher many moons ago. To his credit Mark has learnt a few tricks since then and peppered the strike zone con-tinuously with his dipping off speed breaking balls that look oh so tempting to hit but in hindsight are not really. One error on the mound with a Baulk but the rest of their at bats kept them to scoring just the one run. The next few innings saw the score and the lead seesaw as both teams traded a few runs here and there. Homerun Holman had kept the damage to a mini-mum and had set up Nick to come in for the kill. The fast infield was throw-ing up a few errors from both side but the bats of Brett and Bergseng our No1 and 2 batters were not worrying them as both teed off on long homers to left. Up to the plate Mark ‘ Homerun’ Holman. Thwack!!!! What iniatially looked to be a stand up Double extended itself to a stand up Triple on the fast outfield and then as Mark was preparing to pull up at 3 the call came due to a bad throw to go for home. Homerun Holman with all his might and on the verge of Cardiac Arrest crossed the plate with time to spare. The small crowd that had assembled were in raptures. From the Mound Homerun Holman had kept the damage to a minimum

and had set up Nick to come in for the kill. Gradually setting up the 7 run break that would have us in the clear we kept chipping away. Everyone contributing with the bat including another Homer to Brett and some long ball hitting for a stand up Triple to Claude on one of the biggest hits of the day had us go into our last time in the field with the 8 run unbeatable runs covered and giving New Import – Rob Loosi a chance on the mound. Rob starting off with 2 Strikeouts with good control of the High Fastball. All in all a great day out for the G2 ‘Generations’ Bears (Members from the 50’s, 60’s 70’s 80’s, 90’s and 2 Father Son Combos). We had fielded reasonably, found our bats when we needed them and Homerun Holman could stand on the Mound proud as a pitcher and as a Home Run Hitter. Final Score 18-12 to the Good Guys.

MAYBE NEXT WEEK

Letters to the Editor BEARPAUSE, did you see this story in the press recently? A bear was walking across Rainbow Bridge (Old Hwy 40 at Donner Summit, Truckee)on Saturday when two cars also crossing the bridge scared the bear into jumping over the edge of the bridge. Somehow the bear caught the ledge and was able to pull itself to safety. Authorities decided that nothing could be done

Drea Beer Pause, There seems to have been an oversight!?! What about the wine! D2's lady spectators are enjoying their first summer season tasting a variety of white and red wines. The 'Wine Appreciation Group' had its inaugural meeting during this past winter baseball season. It started with just two members of the E2's spectators, and as the baseball season progressed the number of members increased, as did the number of wines tasted. The E2 Winter Grand Final saw approximately twenty spectators tasting a variety of wines. It has been noticed/noted that the enthusiasm of the spectators tends to increase with the number of wines tasted - which ultimately is of great benefit to the players. (This became very apparent with the Norths E2 winter baseball team winning their Grand Final game!!! Players and spectators had a very successful Winter Baseball season.) Conclusion: Wine tasting by Norths baseball spectators should be encouraged in the name of helping the game of baseball. The beer drinking is for after the game! Anonymous

CUB PAUSE

The North Syd-ney Polar Bears were up against the Manly Seasider

Eagles... Polar Bears started very casually but restricted Manly to two runs in their first bat. We opened slowly starting with two outs then a few base hits and followed by a home run by Tom which jump started the team. we ended the innings with 4 runs. The second inning started with an out-standing pitching performance by Aiden. He struck out two batters and made a play to first, restricting the Ea-gles to zero. Solid catching by Lev was evident as he gave it his all. This helped lift the team. Our time to bat and this could decide the match. We got through four batters but no score. Manly were not going to throw the game away and came back but were restricted by Tom's fast pitching which could not be hit. They however got two across the plate and scores were tied. We opened batting with Yuki and was followed by Ed and Aiden. This combination was outstanding as they worked the pitcher and got some good solid hits and ran the bases well. We ended up batting through the order. Some determined batting from Pat and Josh was beneficial as they moved runners around. We ended with putting 6 runs across the plate. Polar Bears won 10-4. Well done Boys! The whole team were outstanding once they were on base, however our batting was sloppy. Best on ground were Jamie, Aiden and Yuki. However solid base running from Ash, Ben and Jerry were also highlights. Well done again boys. Coach U12's Polar Bears: Edward Allardice Thanks to the parents for the support and helping out for the game.
