.. :: :: A G E N D A :: :: ..Where is everybody?

What do you do when everybody is away and you are allalone? In my case i took over and started writing for thisintroduction. This is Angelos from, Berlin which is full of snow. Its not so easy to survive! Please send warm greetings fromwhere you are now.

One of the best decisions i made during my Evs is tomove my desk next you the window. The view is really greatand very often there is a black bird visiting the garden out-site. Now that i lost my secret love, Oliver (THE CAR!) i feel solonely on the streets. I cant even ride my bike. At least thiswindow is another escape after a long day in front of thecomputer.

In our next bulletin we will try to focus a little bit on socialmovements around the earth. Beginning with Guadalupefrom Mexico we will write about the previous semesters' inci-dents in OAXAKA.

Enjoy reading.A.

We conducted the polling twice and theresponse was overbearing. We could almostgleam with satisfaction at the positivegush of attitudes we caused, after all wewere the creative hands and innovativeminds of Loesje.

As the afternoon was coming to an end,so was our exciting schedule. The pollended with maximum, unmatched number ofvotes against capital punishment. As thevoice of majority, all of us ended up thatwe had to appeal for the law to bedeclared as null and void, much to theunsatisfied twitches of those for thesay. At the end of the day we were ableto give ourselves a newly recognizedidentity and looks curious in the morninghad turned satisfied and even had anuncanny welcoming feeling about them.

As we made our way out of the square ina creative single line, we believed wehad struck some bulls eyes for creativi-ty and independent expression. We evenhad some people following us so theycould have our contact addresses. Atlast, with the satisfied approval of ourman behind the Himalaya Loesje, Raj, allother Loesjes dispersed with bye byesand marked the end of Jan 10th 'The posterday'.

Don't be afraid - the small walk won't be more than 2 hours, because everything here is in thecenter, and as You now, Riga is not very big - some 800 thousands people and a bit less tourists (butnot in this season).Talking about people - it's OK, if You aren't speaking Latvian. I don't think that it would be a big

problem to contact in English, also German-speakers are quitecommon. Yes, and some of Your friends will have opportunities torefresh their Russian knowledge - in Riga more than 50 % per-cent people counts them as part of our Russian minority. Also it's OK, if You don't see so many people smiling on thestreets as it is common in Western Europe and even more inAmerica. It doesn't means that we have Big Depression or some-thing like that - if You will get know Latvians better, You willknow that they also can be hearty and lovable. Believe me, Youwill have lot of opportunities to get acquainted with Latvians, forthat reason will be to crazy nights on Friday and Saturday. Yes, we

can go to ALL clubs, pubs and warm up EVERY dance floor in Riga, if You want!Yes, yes, Riga promises You nightlife! (I don't mean that kind of what some-kind-of-tourists

search in Riga, while celebrate their bachelor parties). Here are not very much places, but I wouldlike to say that they are interesting enough - some nice Irish pubs, some crazy places where people are dancing on the tables, alsosome rock places and etc. Oh, also I must warn You that almost inevery place You can find some Barbies and Kens - most of Latviansare used to dress up their best clothes when going out. So, don'tforget Your pink purse =) (Because, I don't have one!) If Youwon't have party mood - that's also OK - I know some small, niceplaces, where we can have some girl-talk or discussion about pol-itics with one Latvian beer… Mhm…usually in pubs it costsabout 1,2 - 1,6 lats (1,7 - 2,3 EUR), so we can have more thanone!

If we are talking about typical Latvian drinks or food, thenI can tell You a bit more about things we eat. Potatoes is the most common part of our dinner, thensome salad (with tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbages and etc.) and quite lot of choices for meet-and-sausage eaters. (Don't worry, your vegetarian, vegan and other friends won't starve!) We have quitea lot from Russian and Ukrainian kitchen (as You know, Latvia has been part of Big Union for morethan 50 years) - if You kow what is soljanka, rosol or pelmenji, then You probably can imagine whatalso will expect You here… SORRY, no picas, kebabs, hot dogs and hamburgers (of course, we havesome, if You will ask - I will show You ) ...

Yes, all this and more, more exciting things will wait You here, if You will come, Loesje! Ok,dear, time is running out and I have to finish this letter … but You have to promise to come!Keep in touch!

Youth of Uzbekistan: "New

ambassadors of development for mdg!”

Uzbekistan is a beautiful and fruitful land, which lies in the heart of Central Asia. It is theproud, unpredictable heir to Central Asia's richestinheritance with the legendary Silk Route cities ofSamarkand, Khiva and Bukhara.

The capital of Uzbekistan is Tashkent. More than60% of the population comprise young people aged15-24. Having a large share of young population inthe country, it is not surprising that the Governmentmakes considerable investments in young people. The Government of Uzbekistan is carrying out anumber of reforms aimed at providing youth withbetter access to education, health, labour market

and social welfare.

According to the state youth policy, young people are identified as "citizens from14-30 years old" and there are a number of programs and funds operating in Uzbekistanto support youth. There are two major youth organizations in the country. One of them isKamolot ("maturity" from Uzbek) the largest youth movement with about 4,6 million youngmembers. The second is "Fund Forum of Culture and Arts of Uzbekistan" which has a bigcomponent that deal with youth issues and supports many large scale youth initiatives.

In addition, many international organizations support youth volunteerism and variousyouth networks that are often related to help solving social issues in the country throughsmall scale projects and peer-to-peer education and information campaigns. It is worth-while to note the recent boom of youth wings in local political parties and an increasingnumber of NGOs led by young people.

The Youth of Uzbekistan is very keen to participate and make their contri-bution to development challenges. They are very active in the social life of theiracademic institutions and many go for volunteer services with many NGOs andinternational organizations. In August 2005 three delegates from Uzbekistanattended the 3rd World Youth Congress that gathered 600 delegates from 120

countries.

In fact a poster day it was. Nosooner had we made our presence feltin the unanimously cho-sen spot, BasantapurDurbar Square, thespontaneous teamwork ofour members had Loesjeposters smiling from allcorners. The words flow-ing around were able tostrike a considerableamount of local chords andwe were indeed successfulin adding few new members aswell.

We were an instant attrac-tion with our interesting andexciting games. The games wereas such, we were able to have a sneakpeak into the hidden talents of ourmembers, be it gymnastics by Ananta, songs by Tulsi, dances by Titus andother well talented members of ourgroup. We had catwalks and proposals, acts and further beautiful and hypedsongs and dances.

The most achieved part of theworkshop can be declared as the pub-lic poll we conducted over 'Capitalpunishment as right or wrong' at theentrance of the Square.

The response was over-whelming. Not only werewe able to stir adebate of intellectu-als among the public;students, elderly, some vendors and lotsof tourists in thearea; but we managedto get a powerfulresponse throughpersonal votingsystem. We hadcolumns dividedfor and againstcapital punish-

ment with the recent exampleof Saddam Hussain being hanged.

And the rush to note was amaz-ing, the push and pull all with alittle amount of waxing and some-times none at all. The touristneeded no say for their forwardattitude to note against or forthe say. Some public wanted ittranslated and explained so theycould have their say as well.

The Congress was devoted toachieving the MDGs by 2015 and Uzbek par-ticipants were inspired by the global action andthe role of youth in this global campaign. Theybrought back new ideas to mobilize youthunder the slogan of the Summit "Be thechange!". Together with other students they ini-tiated a number of student conferences on theMDGs and as a result initiated the establish-ment of the MDG Youth Network. Realizing theinspirations of young people the United NationsOffice in Uzbekistan provides constant sup-port to the activities of this network.

Recently two delegates from the MDG YouthNetwork participated at the first ever GlobalYouth Leadership Summit held at the UN head-quarters in New York. Meeting with young lead-ers from different countries of the world, Uzbekdelegates learned that no other country has anetwork of young people that work towardsrealization of all the MDGs. Uzbek delegatesbrought many enthusiastic ideas and inspiredtheir peers for volunteering for the MDGs. .

From the very beginning the network start-ed with awareness raising on the MDGs bydelivering presentations to their peers at col-leges, universities, younger children at schoolsand orphanages.

As the network expanded and the num-ber of noble initiatives increased, networkvolunteers initiated a quarterly newsletter "Youth in Action" which covers the ongoingefforts of youth related to MDGs promotestheir academic abilities by providing spacefor academic articles.

United Nations Office in Uzbekistan sup-ports the Youth-Led Development proj-ects, that provide students with an oppor-tunity to develop project proposals andimplement them in their universities or com-munities.

Currently the UN Office is supporting thepreparation of an MDG Youth Briefing Kitfor local youth to serve as a resource andrecommend new ways of volunteering andcommunity service. The MDG YouthNetwork volunteers are conducting sur-veys on the awareness of youth about theMDGs, in order to further strengthen theirknowledge on the MDGs and spread themessage as widely as possible.

Recently network volunteers initiatedthe Model United Nations entitled"Millennium Development Goals +6" simula-tion game, where students were able toenhance their vision of the MDGs and theUN approach to the global and nationalproblems.

ASIA PROJECT

continued on page 7

The preparations for "THE WORLD ISTOO ROUND TO SIT SILENTLY IN THE COR-NER" are blooming in Nepal, Uzbekistan,Kazakhstan, Latvia and Germany. Mostly it flour-ished in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, when Emiliya, Ifodaand the Uzbek group welcomed Ghana from Nepal,Ruuta from Latvia and me from Germany to makegreat plans for the training here in Berlin in March.Unfortunately Zhibek from Kazakhstan could notcome in the end, due to ticket problems, but the restof us experienced a few interesting days in the capitalof Uzbekistan.

So what can a West European like myself say aboutmy impressions of a Central Asian country that I vis-ited for a few days? We were very well taken care ofby our hosts, who took us to nice restaurants and thelocal market, to walk in the city and even becomelocal celebrities at a school famous for its' traditional

Uzbek dances. Luckily we didn't have to dance toimpress the school children, staff and TV-teams, itwas enough to take a lot of photos and hold a littlespeech…

I was impressed by the nice mosaics on the build-ings, by the wide streets and the hospitable people.Differences from what I am used to was the abun-dance of guards and security control, and the waymost drivers seemed to think as long as he used hishorn he could drive like he was the only one on thestreet.

You also notice the gap between the rich and the poormore clearly, when the subway stations are elaboratepieces of art but the people who sell you the fruit on theside of the street don't have much social security to fallback on if the apples, melons and oranges don't sell.

Another difference is that most students have to weara suit and tie everyday at University, so you see andmeet a lot of young people looking very dressed up andorderly. But a lot of things are also very alike no matterwhere in the world you come. It didn't matter that I did-n't understand the exact lyrics of the Uzbek schlagersthat caused wild dancing at a restaurant; I think I gotthe point quite good anyway…

So we have now planned a great training and gottento know each other and the respective organizationseven better. We know that Ghana's group is planning bigsocial projects like building a school in Nepal, that allLatvians cry when they see films about their country, that Emiliya can prepare a power point presentationquicker than you can finish your tea and that the wholeUzbek group is very active and looking forward to goingto Berlin. And we here look forward to having ourguests over and learning new things from each other.

More rreports ffrom oour aadventures ttogether wwill ffollow,I ppromise.

Very soon, in February 2007, the Youthnetwork will celebrate its first anniversary, where they plan to have a round table dis-cussion with experts on the MDGs andpresent their work and achievements dur-ing the year

In 2007 the network will continue theMDG campaign in regions to cover as muchyouth as possible and initiate MDG confer-ences on a national and even regionalscale.

The MDGs should be achieved by theyear 2015 by all countries, but we knowthat the challenge for developing is thegreatest in their efforts to eradicate ofextreme poverty and hunger, achieve uni-versal primary education, empower women, improve maternal and child health, combatHIV/AIDs and keep the environment clean.Without youth all of these goals cannot beachieved, since it is us and our children, who need to care about our future. Theopportunities are there and the presentyoung generation is THE generation thatcan end poverty.

Of course, development does not hap-pen overnight. It is essential not only forpoliticians , but also for young people tothink over their community development. The Millennium Development Goals can bea good systematic tool in dealing withissues of development. We, developingand developed countries, need the MDGs ,because only joint efforts can help toachieve them by 2015. And we know that ina short time span today's young people, will be on the main stage by 2015!

Changes gives to many people insecuritiesbut at the same time opportunities. You havepeople that will never change anything sincethey are afraid of the unknown. For those peo-ple it would be a shock when dinner is sudden-ly at 18:00 instead of 17:30. You also havepeople that change their life on a daily basisbecause they are afraid of a life without sur-prise and to have obligations that could limitthem in their personal freedom. No matterwhat kind of persons we are, changes or forsome people the threat of changes can't beavoided.

This also counts for Loesje, who is of coursea special person constructed out of all theminds and characters of the people behind her.I'm one of the persons behind her and so isCecilia. The past years we've been workingtogether and gave direction to the develop-ment of Loesje. In spite of many difficult situa-tion and constant adjustments (both work andprivately related) we succeeded well. Withoutbeing modest for once (or twice) the past fiveyears more activities on international level tookplace then the ten years before.

At the moment we can proudly say thatthere is a whole network of people that areengaged in Loesje activities around the world. Many of them do write and spread texts butLoesje is developing more as a cultural networkof similar minded people, who can expressthemselves the way they want and can also usethe form they want. It makes it less relevant ifpeople write Loesje texts or express the sameideas through photography.

You can question if this is a good develop-ment but I'm not a poster conservative so I sayyes. More about these developments you canread later in an article from Goran from Serbiain next bulletin.

In two months Cecilia will stop working forLoesje and I will stop working from September.Cecilia's main reason is that it's hard to com-bine being a mother and doing the work forLoesje. She will travel for some months throughEurope (and who knows spread some postersto get de-addicted).

My own reason to stop is that due to thesuccess ofactivities thefinancial andadministrationwork went up.In practise itmeans thatmost of my timegoes to tasksthat aren't mypassion. Mostlikely I willmove back tothe Netherlandsand start towork for anoth-er NGO and do international projects butleave the finances to a bookkeeper.

These developments mean changes forLoesje, but should she be afraid of this? Mysimple answer is of course no. It's hard todeny that the people who work at the inter-national office do give direction to the devel-opment of Loesje and if they leave, things willchange. I do see an important role for theinternational office to activate groups toorganise activities, to do actions and supportthem but on the other hand we work withautonomous groups around the world thatoften don't wait for some office in Berlin to beor to become active.

Next to this the Loesje network (groupsand individuals) isn't depended on two peo-ple. If Cecilia and I leave, so be it. New peo-ple will come and will give their input and tobe honest I'm very positive about that since Ialready know some of the new people andthey are very qualified. It might even becomethe most qualified Loesje team ever and theteam isn't even complete yet. For me thatmeans that there is every reason to leave andif dinner is at 18:00 or 17:30 it doesn't mat-ter as long as there is dinner.
