Actor Orlando Bloom haslisted his compound in the Hol-lywood Hills for annual lease at$18,000 a month.
Bloom’s house was the targetof a July 2009 break-in by the so-called“bling ring”burglars, whofocused on celebrities, includingParis Hilton and Lindsay Lohan. The listing on Realtor.com showsa four-bedroom, three-bathroomhouse with more than 3,200square feet of living space, allset behind gates on a heavilylandscaped lot of three-quartersof an acre.
Walls of glass flank the doublewalnut door entry of the house, built in 1940.The kitchen hascustom cherry cabinetry anda fireplace. A den-library-bed-room has its own entrance. Aswimming pool and motor courtcomplete the compound, whichis gated and — not surprisingly— equipped with security cam-eras.

You don’t have to go to thegym to get a workout that willmake you sweat, burn caloriesand get your heart pumping.Do a double-duty workout byspending 30 to 60 minutes a daytending to home repairs andmaintenance.
Even the American MedicalAssociation ranks house paint-ing, mowing the lawn, cleaningand gardening right up therewith swimming, jogging anddancing as exercises that canhelp you get in shape.
Consider how many caloriesyou burn during the hour ittakes you to clean your home’sgutters: more than 250 for anaverage-size guy. Sand yourwood floors with a sander, andyou’ll use 237 more every houryou work.
How many times have you putoff chores like these becauseyou don’t have time? Considerthat in less time than it takesyou to suit up for the gym, drivethere, ride a stationary bike for30 minutes (burns around 260calories at a moderate pace) andlift weights for half an hour (112calories), and then drive home, you can start building a fence(423 calories an hour) or digginga sandbox for your kids (nearly300 calories an hour).
The more vigorous the activity,of course, the better the burn.Repairs involving hammering, reaching and carrying heavyobjects will use more calories, get your heart pumping fasterand help build muscle.
If getting your body and heartin shape by getting your housein shape sounds more appealingthan buying a gym membership, devise a strategy for making itpart of your workout plan. Hereare 10 tips.
1You can learn how manycalories any do-it-yourselfactivity will burn by using
an online calorie calculator.
2Doing manual labor willserve up a better workoutthan using power tools to do

Home-improvementand design enthu-siasts can add aversatile tool to their
toolbox: a phone.Software programs avail-
able for cell phones can helphomeowners with every-thing from selecting paintcolors to finding artwork todetermining their favoritedecorating style.
Mark English, a SanFrancisco architect, uses anapplication on his cell phone
to help clients visualizeprojects and plans. Englishcreates“idea books,”or filesof images, for his clients toreview with Houzz, a freephone app that containsmore than 70,000 photosof rooms, homes and land-scape projects. Having theimages to refer to helps cli-ents articulate more clearlytheir likes and dislikes, hesaid.
“We can develop a lan-guage where we all knowwhat these adjectives mean,”he said.“We get to that pointwhere we know what the
goal is much more quickly.”Many apps are meant
to provide inspiration forpeople looking to redeco-rate.The Dream Home appallows users to search thou-sands of photos sorted bystyle, room and color.Theapp, which ranges in pricefrom $1.99 to $4.99, is likehaving thousands of designmagazines at your finger-tips, said Peter Melnikov, vice president of Apalon, thecompany that created it.

the same job. For example,an average-size man willburn around 237 caloriestrimming shrubs with amanual cutter, but only169 calories using apower cutter.
3If you and yourspouse are compet-ing to see who can
lose the most weight thisyear without going to thegym, level the playingfield. The more you weighand the taller you are,the more calories you’ll
burn doing the same taskfor the same amount oftime as someone smaller.Same goes if one of youis older: Younger DIYersburn calories quicker.
4Fitness experts sayyou should work outfor 30 to 60 minutes
every day for optimumbenefits. But that doesn’tmean you have to sweatcontinuously during thattime. Even small spurts ofexertion are good for yourheart and your waistline.
5Just as you would ifyou were workingout at the gym, warm
up before you start your
carpentry or roofing orpainting project, and cooldown afterward. Warm-ing up will help preventinjuries. And if you’redoing strenuous exerciselike cutting the grass, raking leaves or chippingconcrete, it’s important towarm up and cool downyour heart before andafter the workout.
6Likewise, work yourway up to the mostvigorous projects,
especially if you’re out ofshape. Diving right intoa heart-pounding activ-ity like hauling concreteblocks from the street to
your backyard can puttoo much stress on a bodythat’s not used to heavylifting.
7Get into the habit ofdoing a job yourselfinstead of asking
your spouse or kids tolend a hand.
8Some of the choresyou already do aregood for your heart
and other muscles, likecleaning the house andwashing clothes, whichtone the thighs andimprove flexibility.
9Take a page fromprofessional con-tractors who are
trained to lift with theirlegs rather than bendingover and straining theirbacks. Wear a back-
supporting brace whendoing heavy lifting orjobs that require a lot ofbending.
10If you’re out ofshape, consultwith your doc-
tor before you start anykind of exercise programor take on a physicallydemanding home-repairproject.

Stop waste before it starts:> Stop junk mail — visit www.stopjunkmail.org for a kit.> Reusable shopping bags — use themevery time you shop to eliminate up to500 disposable bags a year.> Reusable bottles — break the plasticwater bottle habit; investment in a stain-less steel water bottle will quickly pay
for itself.>Travel mugs for hot beverages — makethe change and save some change; somecoffee houses offer discounts when youbring your own mug.> Rechargeable batteries — in the age ofwireless, we use more batteries than ever.Reduce, reuse and recharge!
A future without landfills starts withyou. Once you get started, you’ll see howeasy it is to make a big difference. Let’snot waste this wonderful year!
