President’s Welcome
Welcome to the 43rd Atlantic Schools of Business Conference. ASB’s mission is to support and encourage the exchange of ideas in higher education. Initially, our members came primarily from the universities in Atlantic Canada, but in recent years we have welcomed national and international scholars to showcase their research. We continue the tradition of bringing post-secondary researchers and educators together to disseminate their research in the administrative sciences and pedagogy. As such, the conference represents an opportunity to publish peer-reviewed research in the proceedings or receive feedback for works-in-progress in a collegial setting. The ASB conference also provides an excellent venue for graduate students to present their work and exchange ideas.
On behalf of the ASB executive, I would like to thank St Francis Xavier University for organizing and hosting the 43rd Annual ASB Conference.
Enjoy the conference!
John Rumsey ASB President

Letter from the Conference Co-Chairs
It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the Gerald Schwartz School of Business, St Francis Xavier University for the 43rd annual Atlantic Schools of Business Conference (ASB). We are pleased to report that we have approximately 60 presentations of papers and symposiums scheduled over the course of the conference. Submissions have not only come from the Atlantic Canadian region, but have spanned the globe including international submissions from Umm Al-Qura University, Saudi Arabia, University of Botswana, Université de Pau, France, and University of Juraj Dobrila at Pula, Croatia.
We are delighted to welcome our academic keynote speaker, Dr. Anshuman Prasad, Professor of Management and University Research Scholar at the College of Business, University of New Haven, USA. Along with delivering the conference keynote address, Dr. Prasad will lead the doctoral and early career symposium. We are also happy to welcome our luncheon speaker, Mr. Nova Scotia know it all, Bruce Nunn who will discuss the connection of our past within the context of Nova Scotia.
This conference would not be possible without the help of the many volunteers from universities around the region. We would like to thank our track chairs for their diligent efforts to coordinate the review process and provide feedback to authors who submitted papers. We would also like to thank all the reviewers who took the time to review papers in their area of expertise and offer constructive feedback to authors to help improve their work.
We are especially grateful for the continued support and guidance from the ASB executive, particularly our President, Dr. John Rumsey who was always willing to lend a hand and provide insights on conference planning and EasyChair. Special thanks go out to Ian Feltmate who developed, updated and maintained the ASB2013 website. We also are appreciative of the continued help from Albert Mills and Jean Helms Mills who offered advice on all aspects of the conference planning. The support of our outgoing Dean, Mr. Leo Gallant and, incoming Dean, Dr. Tim Hynes, have been greatly appreciated in helping bring this conference together.
Finally, we also wish to thank the St.FX undergraduate conference volunteers, including Ashley Pettipas who handled photography and designed the conference logos, Graham Haynes, Steve Allen, Zack Konings, Jordan Perry, Gaojiawei Fu (Wei Wei), and Celeste Tremblay who helped out in a variety of ways.
In closing, we would like to extend our thanks to universities around the region for graciously sponsoring events during the conference. Your commitment to ASB helps to continue the tradition. Thanks to all the authors for choosing ASB as a venue to present your research.
Sincerely,
Gabrielle Durepos and Monica Diochon Conference Co-Chair, ASB 2013!

Introducing the Atlantic Schools of Business
First held in 1971, “the Atlantic Schools of Business (ASB) conference is one of the longest-running organizations of its type in North America. Consisting of the schools of business from the four Atlantic Provinces (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland-Labrador) the schools collaborate on matters of mutual concern. Each autumn, a regional conference is hosted by one of the schools on a rotating basis.” (Haddon & Mills, 2008).
According to one history,1 the seeds of ASB can be traced to a meeting of a small group of deans and directors from the region attending the opening ceremony for the new school of business at the University of Moncton in late 1964:
It was suggested by one and heartily agreed to by others that it would be beneficial to meet again, perhaps regularly, “to trade advice and stories”. Thus the seed was planted for the collaboration that became known as the Atlantic Schools of Business (ASB). The following year, in 1965, the first meeting took place (Haddon & Mills, 2008, p.4)
The first conference was held in 19712 and has been held every year since through an informal arrangement that saw the conference organization rotated across the different business schools. In 2005 the conference moved to a standing committee, involving representatives from at least one business school from each of the four regions. The following year, in 2006, the ASB History Project was established by the Sobey PhD Program and this has generated a series of histories, most of which have been presented at subsequent ASB conferences and can be found on the 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and the 2010 ASB Proceedings.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 In the spirit of encouraging plural histories (see Mills & Durepos, 2010), we would stress that this is but of many possible accounts of ASB. 2 Apart from the year – 1971 -- we do not have any information on where or when this conference was held and would appreciate any clues that people can send us: contact Albert Mills (ASB History Project) [email protected]. !

The 2013 Conference Team The 43rd Atlantic Schools of Business Conference has been coordinated by the following team:
Conference Co-Chairs: Gabrielle Durepos, St. Francis Xavier University
Monica Diochon, St. Francis Xavier University
Proceedings Chair: Trish McLaren, Wilfrid Laurier University
Conference Web Master: Ian Feltmate, Acadia University
Conference Logo Design: Ashley Pettipas, St. Francis Xavier University
ASB 2013 Conference Theme
The theme of this year’s conference is “Business in Time”. Time has assumed prominence as a subject of inquiry within many facets of business and organization research, ranging from philosophical issues associated with temporality, business practices such as ‘just in time’ inventory management to questions about organization and business histories. Undoubtedly, the discourse of time has shaped people, organizations and institutions throughout history. Organizations, for example, have had a significant impact on our understanding of time and the importance we afford it. While the clock’s rise in popularity and significance in workplaces can be traced to the industrial revolutions’ factories, today’s workplaces reflect a similar, but intensified focus on time. As the emphasis on efficiency increases, ‘saving’ or ‘cutting down’ on time has become a key priority. Whether it be the use of nostalgia by marketers to sell products or being ‘first to market’, the issue of time plays a central role in business.

Plenary Keynote Speaker
Anshuman brings an interdisciplinary orientation in his scholarship, which deals with such issues as globalization and postcoloniality, workplace diversity and multiculturalism, corporate legitimacy, resistance in organizations, and epistemology. His research has been published in some of the major scholarly journals of the field. He is the editor of Against the Grain: Advances in Postcolonial Organization Studies (2012), as well as Postcolonial Theory and Organizational Analysis: A Critical Engagement (2003), and a co-editor of Managing the Organizational Melting Pot: Dilemmas of Workplace Diversity (1997). Professor Prasad has served in different capacities on the editorial boards of several academic journals: his current editorial board memberships include the boards of Human Relations, and Organization. He has served as Program/Track Chair at a number of scholarly conferences, including the Academy of Management Conference, the Eastern Academy of Management Conference, International Critical Management Studies (CMS) Conference, and the European Group for Organizational Studies (EGOS) Conference. Professor Prasad has been invited to present his research at various academic institutions, such as the Indian Institute of Management (IIM-Calcutta), Saint Mary’s University, University of Toronto, University of Cambridge (U.K.), Rutgers University, and Lund University (Sweden). Currently, he is working on a book that explores the multi-dimensional implications of ongoing global transformations, and co-editing the reference volume, Routledge Companion to Critical Management Studies. Before joining academe, he earned an MBA degree with concentration in finance, and worked as an executive in the commercial banking sector for several years.
Anshuman Prasad (Ph.D., University of Massachusetts at Amherst) is Professor of Management and University Research Scholar at the College of Business, University of New Haven, USA.

Luncheon Keynote Speaker !

With his tongue-in-cheek title, Mr. Nova Scotia Know-It-All, Nunn developed a style of presenting curious connections from Nova Scotia’s past in a way that was fact-filled and fun. Loyal listeners over the years have complained his weekly stories sometimes made them late for work in the morning as they waited to hear how the story ended.
History with A Twist was Bruce’s first collection of his Nova Scotia history stories, published by Nimbus Ltd. It was followed by More History with a Twist, and later, 59 Stories: Nova Scotia’s Curious Connections. His true stories from our past include the dramatic and heroic, the poignant and endearing, the entrepreneurial and inventive, the fascinating and funny. His ‘Know-It-All’ storytelling also has been enjoyed as a regular column in the Chronicle Herald, the Daily News, CoastLife Magazine, and in speaking engagements at corporate conferences, community clubs, and schools. Younger readers in the province know Bruce as the author of Buddy, the Bluenose Reindeer, the story of Rudolph’s Nova Scotian cousin, and Buddy, the Bluenose Reindeer and the Boston Christmas Tree Adventure, a sequel. He is also author of two other illustrated children’s books inspired by his provincial research: The Magical Christmas Light of Old Nova Scotia, and, his most recent, A Bluenose Twelve Days of Christmas.
!!
Bruce Nunn is a St. Francis Xavier University graduate from Antigonish and a broadcast journalist now working in media relations and communications.
Bruce became known on CBC Radio and Television for his role as a storyteller of ‘all things uniquely Nova Scotian’.
