T H I S J U S T I N : B O O K S !

     If you looked out the window on thisparticular day you would have seen thetrees just starting to bud with leaves andflowers. It was that time of year wheneverything was starting to bloom, bees andbirds returned to the air, and the warmth ofthe sun could be felt on your shouldersagain. Inside, a quiet buzz circulated the airin the classroom filled with students. Somewhere curled up on the rug reading graphicnovels, others were researching scientifictopics, and more were completelyengrossed in the latest Katherine Applegatenovel. 

     In the front of the room was a growing   collection of handmade newspapersdiscussing the latest trends and events of5th grade. Comic strips, puzzles, and jokes 

were common in these newspapers, makingthem quite popular among the kids.

      Then, an idea was born. How could we,the 5th graders in room 32, combine bothour love for making newspapers andreading books?

      That's when we decided to make TheBook Nook, a newspaper that is dedicatedto the books we all love. We wanted to giveyou a newspaper that is committed tosharing and being creative with our favoritestories. You will find summaries of greatbooks here, word searches, and creativepieces stemming from moments in thebooks. We hope you enjoy reading thispaper and getting lost in some of ourfavorite stories!

The Book Nook: "Cinder" by Marissa Meyer

     Linh Cinder is a sixteen year old cyborggirl living in New Beijing under the custodyof her stepmother, Linh Adri. She is a wellrenowned mechanic, though mostcustomers are not aware she is a cyborg,because cyborgs are discriminated againstin this new time. Linh Cinder has browneyes, tan skin, and is a brunette. Thoughonly her hand and leg are cyborg, she haswiring in her brain as well. Cinder isstubborn and tough, surprisinglyresourceful, and loyal to the emperor. LinhCinder is not someone you would want asan enemy.

     In the book “Cinder” by Marissa Meyer,the author writes a futuristic spin onCinderella after World War IV, in which themain character, Linh Cinder, is a cyborgwith practically no rights in New Beijingunder the custody of her stepmother.“Cinder” the book is a clear example of aperson who is special, no matter whatother people believed. Cinder works at amechanic stand, paying for her family andkeeping none of the proceeds. Her life issimple: Get up, go to work, come home, goto bed.      But all of that changes when her sisterPeony, the only friend she has other thanher droid, Iko, gets infected with theplague that is sweeping the streets andPrince Kai comes to her stand to get adroid fixed. She soon is forced to be part ofthe cyborg draft to cure the plague anddiscovers shocking news: She’s immune.So she and the plague researcher Dr.Erland race to find a cure before it’s toolate for Peony, and too late for theEmperor who had fallen ill.      Yet again the plot thickens when theQueen of Luna, (the moon), Levana comesdemanding a marriage alliance or war,threatening to use Lunar’s mystical mindpowers to win. Soon Cinder finds herself inthe middle of war, politics, and confusion,not sure who to trust, especially in a worldwhere she can’t even trust herself.

breaking. Linh Peony was the daughter of Linh Garen and Linh Adri, and was loved deeply. Shehad one sister, Linh Pearl, who could always count on Peony to be a friend. Peony was abeautiful girl who was taken from this world too soon by the plague, but Peony and her

bouncing dark curls will be waiting for us in heaven. She was kind and trusting, loving andbeloved. Peony was as lovely as a flower, and she will watch over us for as long as we may live.

Peony may be gone, but she will never be forgotten.

The Book Nook: "Magnus Chase and the Hammer of Thor" by Rick Riordan

     Magnus Chase is the main character inthis book. He is the son of Frey who is thegod of summer. His mom was killed by awolf when they were camping. Since Frey isthe boat god’s son Magnus also knows howto fish. He can make a boat do stuff by will.He is also able to heal wounds and use thepeace of Frey to make everyone around himto drop their weapons for a short moment.      The main struggle in this book is thatLoki can control his children so he controlsSam a bunch of times and makes her do evilstuff.

     In "Magnus Chase and the Hammer ofThor" the main character is Magnus andhis friends Blitz the dwarf, Sam the valkyrieand Hearthstone the blind and deaf elfwho knows rune magic. Alex theshapeshifter and the magic sword Jack (orSumbrander) see Otis Thor’s goat getkilled by a man in a black.      Later on, they get attacked by this goat-killer so they chase the killer and end upfinding Thor. Thor forces them to find hishammer because the giants are realizingthat he doesn’t have it. The giants are nolonger afraid of Thor when he does nothave his all-powerful hammer they willinvade and destroy Midgard (Earth). Onthis almost impossible quest theyovercome many hard challenges andalmost die a bunch of times. They figurethat the giants must have taken thehammer because it is so heavy that noother creature could lift it. A big theme inthis story is acceptance we see this whenAlex arrives and everyone is scared of herbut then they learn that she is actuallyquite nice.       Later when our heroes in disguise gointo a cave with the Skofnung sword andstone the whole time they are surroundedby giants when the see Loki, Loki istrapped in chains under a poisonoussnake. Loki’s servant and also Magnus'suncle then tries and succeeds in cuttingLoki free. Loki then disappears!

She is theheroine of the story, and has just moved intoher cousin' s mansion, the thorne mansion.But the thing is, Sukie has recently beenhaunted by Kitty’s ghost. Sukie has beenmade fun of at school for a long time, as herbest friend moved away soon after Kitty’sdeath. I always think of her as someone withdark hair and startlingly bright eyes, but youcan use your imagination. Sukie findssomeone who treats her kindly, a kid fromschool who was friends with the person whowas meanest to her. His name is Cole, andhe helps her find her true self throughoutthe story.

     He is a 6th grade kid who can tell whattime it is always. One way this might beimportant is if he wanted to rememberwhat time someone that he noticed wentmissing. He also can remember almost allnumbers that are given to him like phonenumbers which comes in handy more thanyou might think. One example of when heneeded to use a phone number to call forhelp (P.S. this is a bit of a spoiler to one ofthe books “Evil Spy School”).      When almost the whole of spy schoolthinks that Ben is a SPYDER agent he isforced to call one of his friends Zoe, eventhough he had absolutely no way ofknowing except for pure memory.

     If you thought that super secret spymissions or spy schools don’t exist, thinkagain because they do. In the book “SpySchool” by Stuart Gibbs a genus kidnamed Benjamin Ripley, just got his lifeflipped upside down when he getsoffered by Alexander Hale, a super spy, Togo to a spy school that very few peopleknow about. this is because the parents ofmany students there think that their kidsare going to a very good science academyand not a secret school. At the spy schoolthe kids are trained to go on missions.One theme of the book is that anyonecan do something amazing because Benis not the most sporty of agents in theschool, but his intelligence makes up forit because he has defeated the enemynamed SPYDER a lot of times justbecause of how smart he is. One thingthat the main character Ben had troublewith during his first year at spy school isfitting in, but in years to come he makesmore friends like Zoe, Erika,Chip, andwarren (but warren likes to be calledCamilien). Erika is also Alexzander Hale’sdaughter (Ben also has a crush on Erika).

The story  The One andOnly Ivan” is about a gorilla named Ivan.Ivan has lived in a domain in the exit 8 Bigtop Mall and Video Arcade since he waslittle and it is all he can remember or hethinks about. Throughout the book, Ivanremembers more than he thinks when hetells stories to Ruby the baby elephant inorder to cheer her up when sadnessarrives. As Ivan remembers his past life hechanges in a way and notices things thathe hadn't noticed before. Ivan makes apromise, a promise to get Ruby andhimself away from this prison and awayfrom Mack the owner. Ivan had originallythought that Mack was nice. Now Ivan isnot so sure after he saw the claw stick. Inorder to get away, he brings out his innerartist, with the help of Julia the daughterof George the janitor. There is sadness,hope and love spread throughout thisstory.

Once every four years a schoolheadmaster comes to town and no it's not aheadmaster like every other school. They don’tcome for signups. He kidnaps two kids to go toone school, one for the good and one for theevil.      On the night of the choosing Sophie is takenthrough the forest, Agatha hears her screamand goes after her. Agatha grabs on and hangson tight to save her friend. They then getdropped in a school one which is black anddark, with clouds of lightning and darkness, anda black lagoon,  while on the other hand, theother school is made of glass with blues andpinks all over, with a glistening lake with fishand birds. Sophie is in the school for evil whileAgatha is in the school for good. Both of themare shocked at what is in front of them. Sophiewants to get to the school for good because shethinks that’s where she belongs and Agathadoesn’t want to switch schools. Instead, shewants to go back home safely with her friend.          They both learn that the school they werebut into was actually meant to be and it was nota mistake.The school headmaster said that ifthey want to go home they have to complete achallenge. While on that challenge Sophielearns that Agatha is her nemesis, and the firstrule of being a witch is that you will never feelsatisfaction until you kill your nemesis...

Ender Wiggin, the main character of“Ender’s Game,” proves that he can getthrough any challenge set for him.  Heproves throughout the story bychanging his perspective of things.Ender Wiggin starts the story at theage of 6 but still does things waybeyond his years.  He still grows andunderstands more and throughout hisyears at battle school he finds thatthere is many things that should bevalued above friendship.  Though thesevalues may not be true in the realworld it still shows a lot of character forgoing through these hardships at sucha young age.  Again and again Endershows that the limits of the humanrace are not always set in stone.

     Ender Wiggin is forced into war, fightingalong side and sometimes against his kin.He hopes that one day he will escape thisplace called battle school.  All thesechildren are forced to fight each other in socalled “moch” combat but everyone knowsthe best commander wins. It has nothingto do with playing and it is as close to waras you can get in an orbiting space station. The smartest kids are commanders andtheir “inferiors” get commanded by themand that is all that ever happened, at leastnot until the teachers took away all thestops.  The enemy was seeming to loomcloser as the teachers though away therules battles every day instead of mochcommanders graduating left and righteven a blind man could see what washappening.  Ender was though 5 years oftraining in barely 3, the formics were close,and the international fleet was going crazy.Every unexpected thing was thrown at thekids in battle school and Ender  was tryingto get through all of it. Ender’s only hopewas to do well enough to get out of there,and when he finally does it turns out thatthe outside world was almost as bad, anynormal person would have bit broken,completely crushed under the pressure, but luckily Ender is not a ¨normal¨human. No matter how strong his mind is,or how powerful his willpower is can he getthrough it?

In the town a drought ishappening.  She has to share a room withher half sister. During the book she wantsto bring back the tree, lake, and bees. Shelearns that magic is not just in fairytalesand that anything possible.

     Roz is a robot who lived on a wilddeserted island in the middle of theocean. You might be wondering howshe got there. Roz was being shippedwith other robots just like her, until astorm hit the boat they were in theother robot had hit the rocky side ofthe island breaking their crates but rozwas lucky as the waves got bigger shegot closer to the top of the island andwas safe. She knew she was differentfrom the other robots even tho she hadnever met any other robot. She wassmart, she looked at how the animalsacted and their behavior to each other,she watched as they talked to eachother and started to learn the animallanguage. Now she lives on a farm andcan speak with the animals. This abilityis helpful to Roz as she wants to leavethe farm and go home back to theisland with all the other wild animals.

She knew that this familyneeded her but she also knew that her ownson needed her too. It has been a fewmonths after she arrived she missed herson and her old home but she has grownon the family especially to Jaya and Jad(the twins). She watched the kids play andthe cows graze and knew that this familyneeded her the most but she also knewthat her son needed her as well.

They want to stay togetherand escape to New York City and duringthe story, gets adopted by a weird family ina mansion with a mom that’s extremelydepressed and they need to learn how toact around her.

Ivy Lopez lives in Fresno and another placein Southern California and has an olderbrother Fernando who is in the Militaryfighting in World War 2 and during thebeginning, they move to a new town andIvy had to leave her best friend Araceli andmeets a new friend Susan who does nothave many friends because of her dadbeing protective and discovers somethings about the family that sold them thehouse.

Will Soren andGylfie find their parents? It is a verydangerous journey, and they will only makeit with sacrifices.

He also sits in the middleof a mom and dad and they have ababy and it wont stop crying for thewhole entire plane ride. When hegets to the airport, he leaves withdifferent suitcases. His has even morebad luck in the story because a spiderjumps on him while he is in the toilet.He also goes to a part of a beach andhas a camera where you are notsupposed to have a camera!

He’s is also brave forthe same reason.

     In “Holes” by Louis Sachar, StanleyYelnats is accused of a crime he didn'tcommit. Stanley is given the choice ofgoing to jail, or Camp Green Lake, ajuvenile correctional facility, and like youwould probably chose, he chose campGreen Lake. Here, they dig to buildcharacter. When he arrives he soons findsout that everything isn't what it seems.Soon Zero, Stanley's friend, runs away afterhe hit one of the people running the placein the head. Since he was in trouble hebacked up into the distance and Stanleygoes after him. First he tries to steal a truckand drive there, but he crashes it, so thenhe just travels on foot. He finds Zero undera boat drinking peach juice.

     Instead of going back they head to amountain because Stanley thinks its wherehis family member survived after beingrobbed, they found a abandoned farm andlived there for a few days. Then Stanleythinks they weren't digging to buildcharacter, he thinks it's too find treasure. They go back to find it and then escape.They find the treasure but…

     They get caught.

     Then Stanley's lawyer comes and setsthem free because the camp was breakingthe law and the they prove that thetreasure is Stanley's because it was thefamily members.

The Book Nook: "Spy Ski School" by Stuart Gibbs

     “Spy School” is a book abouta spy.  The main character ismore than a real spy… we couldsay he is a spy student in a spyschool. This kid is namedBenjamin Ripley. Most of thetime in the book he is calledBen. If Ben was in a regularschool he might be in middleschool, like 7th or 8th grade. Inthe book he first starts off as aregular boy who does regularthings and it was like that untilAlexander Hale, a great “spy,”came to get Ben to put him into spy school.  Ben has the skillof doing fast math problems.He also has a friend namedMike Brezinski (Mike).

When she runsher hands over her books one pricks hershe takes the book out and it is one of the“so you want to be” books. It said “so youwant to be a wizard,” however it wasn't thetitle that surprised her it was the fact thatshe had never read it. The book was alsonot old at all but the spine was fragile andthe pages were no longer white. When sherealizes there is an oath in the book shewonders if it is a joke. Will Nita red theoath? Read the book to find out. this is abook about mysterious magic and I wouldrecommend it if you like fantasy bookswithout fairies and unicorns.

And like ahundred cat names to remember.There are 4 clans, Thunderclan,Windclan, Shadowclan, andRiverclan. Even without one clan, thebalance will be broken, waging warfor the land. Every moonhigh, the 4clan goes to Fourtrees, to attend to“the gathering” to discuss importantmatters like, how scarce is prey thisyear, who is new leader and such.
