    College catalogs. Information contained herein is specific to this oneprogram. For information regarding the mission, history, management,accreditation, philosophy of education, statement of faith, and the otherprograms of Barclay College, please refer to those documents.

    The Barclay College Certificate in Bible and Ministry / Certificado en Biblia yMinisterio program currently is being offered in cooperation with the Centrode Estudios Teologicos Latinamericano of the Northwest Yearly Meeting ofFriends, Newberg, Oregon.

    Rationale

    Barclay College has developed this bilingual distance learning program inresponse to needs expressed by persons and organizations ministering toSpanish-speaking communities. We are providing college level courses bymeans of an alternative delivery system for pastors and laity leading to aCertificate in Bible and Ministry. Course materials are available in bothEnglish and Spanish (with the exception of Internet content, which is inEnglish). This is an opportunity for persons not seeking a degree yet whowish to enrich themselves and their ministries through academic study.

    Objectives

    Students who complete the Certificate in Bible and Ministry / Certificado en

    Biblia y Ministerio curriculum will:1. Understand the need for, meaning, and practice of a personal

    relationship with God through Jesus Christ.2. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the Bible and essential Christian

    doctrine, the ability to accurately interpret Scripture, and anThis catalog is intended to fairly represent Barclay College Home College courses and policies in effect when this volume was

    increasingly coherent Christian worldview that enables them to applybiblical principles to questions of ethics, compassion, and all other lifesituations.

    3. Develop the skills and understanding necessary for personal Biblestudy, prayer, and devotional life which can sustain and empowerones personal life and ministry to others.

    4. Demonstrate a basic level of knowledge of the pastors role inencouraging, supporting, and ministering to members of local churchcongregations.

    The distance learning courses offered in this catalog are offered by BarclayCollege through an agreement with Global University of Springfield, Missouri.

    Program of Study

    The course of study for the Certificate in Bible and Ministry / Certificado enBiblia y Ministerio is normally undertaken by a cohort of at least fivestudents. The courses comprising the 15 hour certificate program are

    accredited Barclay Home College distance learning courses, now web-enhanced, and are facilitated by well-qualified full-time or adjunct BarclayCollege faculty. The programs six courses are offered successively in acycle, and students may begin the cycle at the start of any course in it.

    These courses can satisfy some of the requirements of Barclay Colleges on-campus degree programs, and may transfer to other institutions.

    The courses utilize the Home College distance learning printed materials forcontent, which are available in the students choice of English or Spanish.Students are required to interact with one another and faculty online inthreaded discussion forums or chat rooms; assignments are submitted online;examinations are taken online. Online participation is a component in thecalculation of the final course grades.

    Note that the language of the web site is English. Students may post ineither English or Spanish, and examinations will be offered in both Englishand Spanish.

    The time needed for completion of the program course work is approximatelyfifteen months (66 weeks); holidays and breaks will extend this timeline. Acohort of students will take approximately 9 weeks to complete each twohour course; each three hour course will take approximately 13 weeks. Likean individual student in a distance learning course, the cohort can determineits own pace. With the consent of the faculty facilitator, an ambitious cohort,whose members are mutually and unanimously committed to workingdiligently, could shorten these times.

    Upon successful completion, students are awarded a certificate.

    Students in this certificate program must have access to a computer withinternet capability. A dial-up connection at 56 Kbps will be adequate; highspeed internet is recommended. Course-specific requirements such asassignment submission format are determined by the faculty facilitator.

    Enrollment

    Barclay College does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, color,national or ethnic origin, age or physical disability in the administration ofany of its programs or policies.

    All prospective students for the Certificate in Bible and Ministry / Certificadoen Biblia y Ministerio program are required to have a high school diploma,G.E.D., or equivalent. For prospective students educated outside the U.S.,this requirement is met with the comparable education completion documentawarded in the country in which they attended school. An official transcriptmust be requested from the students high school and sent directly to Barclay

    College. In the event that a transcript is not readily available (e.g. from aschool outside the U.S.), contact the Home College Office regarding alternateacceptable documentation. The students initial enrollment is not completeuntil proof of high school completion is on file.

    Continuing students enroll in successive courses as the cycle proceeds bycompleting an enrollment form for each course.

    Costs

    Course fees are $150.00 per credit hour for each course, which includestuition, textbooks, and materials. Thus the cost of a two-hour course is$300.00, a three-hour course is $450.00, and the total cost of the fifteen-hourcertificate program is $2250.00. There is a diploma fee of $8.00 for thecertificate.

    Policy and Procedure

    Course fees are due and payable when enrollment forms are submitted.Course materials will not be ordered or forwarded to the student unlesspayment is received.

    Assignment deadlines and test schedules are specific to each course and thestudent is expected to adhere strictly to them. Exceptions or extensions dueto significant extenuating circumstances (e.g., serious illness or death in thefamily) may be granted by the Registrar in consultation with the facultyfacilitator upon written petition by the student.

    A student withdrawing from any course during the first two weeks will haveno record of the course on his or her transcript. If the student withdrawsafter the second week but before the midpoint of the course, the grade of W(Withdrew) is recorded. A withdrawal after the midpoint will be recorded asWP (WithdrewPassing) or WF (WithdrewFailing).

    A student withdrawing from any course during the first two weeks will receivea refund of 50% of only the tuition portion of the course fees. The costs oftextbooks and materials included in the course fees vary from course tocourse and are not refundable. After the second week, no refund is given.

    A student wishing to reenroll in a course because of withdrawal or retake a

    course because of a failing grade has the option of either reenrolling as anindependent Home College distance learning student, or reenrolling at theappropriate point in the next certificate cohort cycle. A student with arecorded grade of W or WP may reenroll for an administrative fee of $100.00.

    The student may retain and reuse the course materials and texts, providedthat they are still current for use in the course at the time of reenrollment.Should newer course materials be required, the materials fees applicable atthe time of reenrollment will be charged in addition to the reenrollment fee.A student with a recorded grade of F or WF must pay the full course feesapplicable at the time of reenrollment, less the costs of materials retained bythe student, provided that those texts and materials are still current for usein the course.

    LIT1203 Old Testament Literature (3 credits)The work of God in relation to humankind begins in the Old Testament. All of theevents from humanitys creation up to the point of redemption occur in this larger

    portion of the Bible. In Old Testament Literature the events are dissected into theirhistorical and prophetic contexts. It includes a study of the development of the nationof Israel and individuals who made significant contributions to this process. It isrecommended that the student study this course before any other Old TestamentsubjectMaterials required: Old Testament Literature by Fred Greve, The OldTestament Speaks by Samuel Schultz, and a New International Version of the Bible.

    LIT1203 Panorama del Antiguo Testamento (3 crditos)La obra de Dios en relacin con el hombre comienza en el Antiguo Testamento.

    Todos los sucesos desde la creacin del hombre hasta el momento de su redencinocurren en esta ms extensa porcin de la Biblia.     LIT1303 New Testament Literature (3 credits)Knowledge, change, and action: these three terms reflect the objectives of the NewTestament Literature course. A panoramic view of the New Testament unifies thestudy of its messages, doctrines, personalities, and problems of interpretation. Thiscourse treats the cultural and historical backgrounds of the New Testament, the lifeof Christ, the history of the expansion of the Early Church, and issues that faced thefirst century Christians. The first unit presents fundamental truths thatmust be accepted before beginning a study of the Bible. The second unit deals withgeneral principles of interpretation that are applicable to any type of literature.Specific rules that apply to special types of literature are overviewed in the third unit.In the final unit, the student is given sample passages of Scripture to which he or shewill apply the guidelines of interpretation that have been learned. Materials required:Principles of Biblical Interpretation by Carl B. Gibbs, How to Read the Bible for All ItsWorth by Gordon D. Fee and Douglas Stuart, and a New International Version of theBible.

Examplesfrom many countries show how basic evangelism methods can be used in a variety ofways. The biblical teaching on sin and salvation is given as an essential part of thetraining in how to share the message. Methods of personal and mass evangelismpoint out ways in which all Christians in a local church can work together toevangelize their world.     MIN1052 The Work of the Pastor (2 credits)The Work of the Pastoris a study that focuses on the pastors call to and preparationfor Christian ministry. The author examines the relationships that are vital tosuccessful ministry and reviews the pastors primary responsibilities. Based on the

    books of 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus, this course enables the students to recognizeand apply biblical principles to different situations they face in a local congregation.Specific principles treated relate to the selection of church leadership, the disciplineof church members, and guidelines for church worship. Since the study focuses onthe pastors call and spiritual life, as well as pastoral duties, it emphasizes both beingand doing. Materials required: The Work of the Pastorby Eleazer E. Javier and a NewInternational Version of the Bible.

    MIN1052 La Obra del Pastor (2 crditos)La obra del pastores un estudio que se ocupa del llamamiento del pastor y lapreparacin para el ministerio cristiano. Eleazer E. Javier examina las relaciones queson vitals al ministerio exitoso y considera las responsabilidades fundamentales delpastor.     BUS2102 Church Business (2 credits)Church Business is an introductory study of many of the principles, procedures, andtechniques used in todays business world as they apply to the local church and itsleadership. In this course pastors, church business administrators, and other churchleaders will find the problem-solving approach to these subjects of practical value.

    The course first introduces the student to the organizing and staffing functions of thechurch that enable it to operate effectively. The student then learns practicalmethods of raising money for the churchs expenses. Other emphases include theimportance of keeping good records and ideas on better management of the churchsmoney, facilities, and equipment. Materials required: Church Business by Joseph W.Kilpatrick and a New International Version of the Bible.
