What is it?

Bipolar disorder involves periods of excitability (mania) alternating with periods of depression. The "mood swings" between mania and depression can be very abrupt.

The mood swings include one stage referred to as mania.

Mania- a mood disorder marked by a hyperactive wildly optimistic state.

Diagnosis

Several factors are important to consider when diagnosing Bipolar disorder, such as:

One’s medical history, such as past medications, diseases, and surgeries.

The patient’s family medical historyThe patient’s recent mood, for example if/when

they have been experiencing mood swingsObservations of behavior and moodPhysical causes that could cause symptomsChecking for thyroid problems/drug levels using

methods such as laboratory tests

Treatment

The most common treatment for both types of bipolar disorder are as follows: Antipsychotic Medications Lithium Mood Stabilizers Antidepressants

Electroconvulsive Therapy is sometimes used in the treatment of bipolar disorder. ET is a psychiatric treatment that works by sending an electrical current that in turn causes a seizure of the central nervous system while the patient is under anesthesia.

Psychotherapy is also a useful option.Joining a support group may be particularly helpful for

bipolar disorder patients.

Etiology

The origin and causes for Bipolar Disorder have yet to be found and scientists are working hard to discover a reason for this illness.

Comorbidity

When a person suffers by the bipolar disorder they most likely experience Anxiety Depression Social Phobia Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Prognosis

Medical professionals have shown through extensive research that people that suffer from bipolar disorder are more likely to commit suicide and have heart problems.

Statistics

2.6% of the U.S. population suffers from the bipolar disorder.

Most people who suffer from bipolar disorder are 25 years of age.

Gender, race, and location play no part in the determination of who has the bipolar disorder.
