4.0 PROCESS DATA AND SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

4.1 General

The filters are to be designed to recover 2% Pd/C catalyst from a feedstream of MIBK (organic solvent)/water mixture during a cyclic operation of filtering and cleaning. A preliminary PdID is shown on attachment 4.

After a filter is loaded the catalyst has to be washed with water, dried with nitrogen and discharged either to be recycled (after slurrization) or discarded.

When one filter is cleaned the other one has to be in operation to continue the process. Prefiltration and starting up the back-up filter has to be done during operation of the other one. Therefore a separate prefiltration line has to be used, fed with pump P-2446. P-2445 is nonnally used for feeding to the filters. If pump P-2445 fails, pump P-2446 can be used as spare feed pump but then prefiltration is not possible anymore.

P-2445 will only feed the filter that is in operation and P-2446 will normally just prefiltrate (with catalyst and not with filter aid) The other filter is at that moment not used for filtration.

The filters shall be provided with heat tracing (60 oC, + 5 oC) to prevent that the temperature of the process fluid drops below 55 OC.

In the common discharge filtrate line of the catalyst filters, a sample point is necessary to check if the filters are operating correctly with regard to filter efficiency and performance.

.-

The vent line on top of the filters shall be of sufficient size to relieve the gas during filling of filters. The vent line will be connected to a vent System that normally operates between 0 and 0.2 barg.

4.3 Catalvst filtration data

Average feed = 4.99 m3/h Average design feed = 1.1 * 4.99 m3/h

= 5.49 m3/h

Total time per cycle: 6h 24 m = 6.4 h Total filtration time per cycle - 4h 24 m - 4.4 h Actual flow rate of feed = (total time per cycle/total filtration time per cycle) * average design feed = 6.4/4.4 * 5.49 = 7.99 m3/h

Filter surface: 7 m2 (per filter)

Flow rate per Square meter - 7.99 m3/h/7 m2 = 1.141 m3/h/m2

Actual catalyst flow rate - 19.6 kg/h Amount of catalyst per batch = 4.4 * 19.6 - 186.2 kg Cake density = 0.6 kg/l Volume of catalyst = 86.2/0.6 - 1143.7 1/B Cake thickness - 143.7 dm3/700 dm2 - k20.5 mm For final Process Calculations, see HSC drawing number 1076527-A4

4.4 Design reauirements:

- Seller to design optimum size of filters versus operation cycle time. The feeding time shall not exceed the operation cycle time for one filter to avoid use of two filters at the Same time.

- Good filtration of catalyst in both org. and aq. layer. - Particle size of catalyst: 1 - 100 Pm. - Good washability of catalyst after filtration. - Slurry discharge and "dry" solid discharge.

4.5 Utilitv data

Utilities as shown on attachment 2 can be made available. Instrument air is free from oil and dust.

4.6 Site data

For site data, See attachment 1.

5.0 MECHANICAL DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

Only equipment, materials, components, constructions etc., which have been proven during at least two years of successful operation in similar process conditions are acceptable.
