This year’s Show will give you lots of opportunities to experience activities on and off the water, make a model boat, understand the art of knots, experience the popular Newfoundland dog display and get the opportunity to meet the very best wooden boat builders in the country.

With so much to do, you’re spoilt for choice – a great family day out with lots to do and see including outdoor pursuits, live jazz, boat rides and quality craft and produce brought to you by the very best artisans.

I am especially excited to welcome IKEA to this year’s Show. The Swedish furniture giant will be in attendance on Saturday and Sunday promoting their new, long-awaited Reading superstore - which is set to open this summer.

The store will be inviting visitors to join them for an ‘IKEA experience’ aboard their boat, with drinks and products on display. Make sure you pay them a visit – they are moored next to the food court, so right in the middle of the Show.

Many of you already know that last year, the running of the Show was taken on by Ben Lane, who continued to build on the foundation and ethos of past shows as well as bringing some great ideas and entertainment to the 2015 event.

I wish Ben, and his team, every success with this year’s Show.

And finally….I would like to offer all paying visitors to the Boat Show reduced entry to the Wildlife Park of £5, valid once during the weekend of the Show, on production of a discount voucher.

The Thames Vintage Boat ClubThe Thames Vintage Boat Club was founded at Old Windsor in March 1983 to provide a club and forum for all types of traditionally built craft; to seek to encour-age their restoration, maintenance, and above all, their use, and also to produce and maintain an historical record of all traditional craft on the river Thames.

If you love boats, you should be a member! Now in our fourth decade, we can look back on a remarkable success in our aims over the past years. We have around 580 members and our boat membership is around 250, amongst which will be found the finest builds and restorations anywhere. Our members include most of the reputable boat builders on the upper Thames, noted experts on engines, design, boat types and history, and many gifted amateurs.

The Wooden Canoe Heritage Association is a non-profit membership organization devoted to preserving, studying,

building, restoring, and using wooden and bark canoes, and to disseminating information about canoeing heritage throughout the world.

Accessible Sailing is a registered charity based at Farmoor Reservoir near Oxford. The charity works to provide better facili-ties and support to help disabled sailors access the water and their boats more easily. Funds raised pay for essential equipment such as hoists and handrails, while a multi-million purpose-built pontoon with low freeboard and jetties was built at Farmoor for the disabled sailing com-munity. A pilot study into improving sailing facilities for blind sailors will begin shortly. Come along and find out all about it!

The Classic Motor Boat Association is the largest organisation in the UK catering for the preservation and enjoyment of classic powerboats and engines from British and Overseas manufacturers. It was founded in 1998. The CMBA is run by enthusiasts, with a volunteer committee and is dedicat-ed to raising awareness of classic motor boats and the enjoyment of classic boats. Most of the CMBA members’ boats are in the 13ft to 19ft range; dating from the late 1920s, through to the 1970s and are either inboard, or outboard powered.

Jenny Wren is a beautiful example of a ‘Broom Robb’ traditional wooden cruiser, built by Broom Boats in 1957. She has been on the Broads ever since and when she came up for sale recently Broom took the opportunity to buy her back. developed into the magnificent visitor attraction it is today.

The collection of rare birds harks back to the early days and Gilbert Beale’s fa-voured Indian peacocks. Today the Park is home to numerous species of animals and bird - as well as having a bird hide and one of the UK’s largest owleries here, a dedicated team of professionals supports national and international conservation programmes.

With our feathered friends a key part of what the Trust is about, since 1999 Beale Park has ringed more than 5,000 birds as part of a national British Trust Ornithology programme, enabling important research by tracking and monitoring birds’ move-ment and migration habits.

The antics of Beale Park’s animals never fail to fascinate visitors – not least of all the ever-popular meerkats. Other species here include Ring-Tailed Lemurs, wallabies, rac-coons, prairie dogs, Yellow Mongoose and monkeys. In the area called ‘Bertie’s Bugs and Beasts’ there are giant stick insects, giant snails, snakes and even cockroaches and tarantulas.

Particularly appealing to children are various challenges dotted round the Park. With Animal Athletics they carry out such tasks as hanging like a monkey or out-run-ning a cheetah, and at Education Stations they are asked questions which stimulate and encourage enquiring minds to take a deeper interest in animals.

Flora is important, too, at Beale Park, where there are opportunities to take a stroll or sit and relax while enjoying the variety of plants in the Dry Garden and Jubilee Water Garden, which surrounds the Pavilion – a centrepiece to the Park which was built in 1956 to the design of Gilbert Beale.

The Pavilion is now home to the Park’s model boat collection and now displays more than 400 models, including a rep-resentative collection from the Merchant Navy and sailing boats dating back to the 1890s. Among the collection is a model of HMS Vanguard, kindly on loan to the Park and built by Alex McFadyen. The model is a replica of the original ship, built by John Brown’s Shipyard at Clydebank, Glasgow in 1946.

One of the biggest attractions for many is the miniature narrow-gauge diesel railway. The engine pulls four carriages carrying up to 64 people along the mile-long track – and every person coming to the Park gets one free trip on the train, with additional rides available at just £1.

Children are well catered for with play areas to burn off excess energy, including Pirate Island and a splashpool – perfect for cooling off on a hot summer’s day. The Little Tikes Village is a must for smaller children, with Little Tikes houses and cars providing endless fun.

During school holidays, Beale Park hosts a number of special events for children, including archery, pond-dipping, build a butterfly-feeder workshops, bug sessions and exciting crate-climbing for the adventurous – see the website for dates and details.

Visitors are welcome to bring their own picnic, but you can save yourself a job by pre-ordering one from the on-site Peacock Restaurant. If you don’t want to picnic, the restaurant has a good choice on its menu with mid-morning snacks, home-made

dishes to enjoy at lunchtime, and even traditional afternoon tea with scones and clotted cream.

With summer just around the corner, Beale Park makes for a perfect day out – and with so much to pack in it will be a very full day indeed.

Beale Park, at Lower Basildon near Pangbourne, offers one of the most fabulous days out for families. This wildlife park, situated on the banks of the River Thames, has something for everyone: animals and birds, gardens, adventure playgrounds, a splashpool – even a train.

At the heart of everything that happens at Beale Park is our conservation programme, with every penny from entrance fees supporting what we do. As part of The Child Beale Trust it is a registered charity

that owes its origins to Gilbert Beale who, in 1956, converted this beautiful 350-acre park from private farmland into something everyone could enjoy. Gilbert Beale, who died in 1967 at the age of 99, was some-thing of an eccentric; his favourite peahen called Laura rode around the estate with him in his Rolls Royce.

Back in the 1950s the Park was little more than a track and some ponds, but with the help of Gilbert’s great nephew Richard Howard and his family, the site was

Back at Beale Park Boat Show is the ever-popular display of Newfoundland Dogs on the lake is testimony to the bravery of this breed. They are renowned for their natural life saving skills on the water. The team will also perform a dry display giving everyone the opportunity to meet the dogs.

Brush up on your bushcraft skills

Another first for Beale Park Boat Show is bush craft and survival company Woodland Ways who over the course of the weekend will stage 1–2 hour demonstrations on a whole host of outdoor bush craft skills.
